The 4 Elements Of The Movement Of Hip Hop
The 4 Elements of the Movement of Hip Hop The Urban Dictionary's definition of Hip Hop is: A
name for the 4 elements of the late 70 's New York City renaissance which includes break dancing,
emceeing, (rapping) graffiti, and turntablism. Wikipedia's definition is: Hip hop or hip–hop is a
subcultural movement that formed during the early 1970s by African–American and Puerto Rican
youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City. Hip hop is truly several forms of art used to
express emotions visually, aurally, orally, physically. It is then categorized into 4 separate parts:
mceeing, Djing, breakdancing and graffiti. All have evolved from when they were first created,
shifted over the years and now apply to modern times. Many people have different versions to how
Hip Hop was created. The one most often believed is how Dj Kool Herc came across 3 of the
components that make up hip hop. When trying to entertain at a birthday party using a turntable, he
accidentally expanded a break in the beat. A technique now known as scratching was invented and
people began to rhyme, and breakdance during this break. Mceeing or rapping to the beats made by
a dj and his turntable, the most popular of the foundations of hip hop, took the Black and Puerto
Rican communities by storm. Eventually spreading out from the select neighborhoods, making its
way to the rest of the world. Though people were dubious about this style of music becoming
popular, now rap music is one of the most listened

Disc-Jockey's Influence On The Music Industry
The history of DJ'ing is a long path all the way back to the early 1900's. People had stated to
discover that you could have the same effect on a crowd as bands and orchestras but only some
sound equipment and songs by yourself. Many people have no idea how long DJ's have been
influencing the music industry and what is to be played on radio stations worldwide. The first
known disc–jockey took his place in history in 1909. Ray Newby of California played records from
a small transmitter while he was a student in college at the age of 16. By 1910, radio broadcasts had
become a very normal, but still exciting part of life. The world's first DJ dance party was thrown by
Jimmy Savile in 1943; he mainly played jazz records for the people who attended these parties. A
few years later, Savile became the first person to use turntables live at a dance party so that he could
a continuous flow of music playing. In Kingston, Jamaica, promoters would call themselves DJs
which would throw giant dance parties in the streets, and DJs would blast their music from huge PA
speaker systems. Jamaicans called these party entrepreneurs sound systems. The city of New York
became the breeding ground for experimentation with the music and style of DJs. In the 1970's, DJ
Kool Herc and Afrikan Bambatta were deemed the "fathers of hip hop", throwing huge ... Show

The Causes And Impacts Of Hip-Hop Culture
Hip– hop is an art form that came out of a troubled time in American history especially in the Bronx.
The building of hip hop culture in the Bronx caused media culture, cultural diversity, changing
economy and citizens rights and responsibilities to arise through the actions of hip hop culture. In
the beginning, hip hop culture started and spread because of the changing economy and hard times
for all, soon graffiti and hip hop culture became a statement throughout the world and was a media
that spread throughout the world. Hip– hop emerged partially because of the diversity of the people
living in the Bronx at the time. However hip– hop and graffiti was suppressed because many people,
such as officials, believed the they owned the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Latino played music and the everyone danced. Africa Bilbao, a person that lived in the Bronx in 60s,
said, "I do not like to get into it when we call them Puerto Ricans, they are Africans like us...They
are the African that kept the Drums, they kept the gods of santeria alive. In the 60's , Black and
Puerto Ricans were always playing the Conga. Always had it the rhythms." This shows that the
people came together in the Bronx even though they were such different cultures. The diversity of
the people of the Bronx and the fact they came together helped adapt when the hip hop movement
started. Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Dj Herc were accepted because the people of the
Bronx loved music and dance. As de–industrialization progressed many people in the Bronx started
having outdoor parties and plugged their stereos into lamp post. This activity and the parties brought
many people from different cultures together because of the hard time the Bronx were facing. The
parties gave hope to the people of the Bronx. The changing economy brought many changes to
culture and inspired the hip–hop movement partly. In Mark Nason's lecture he talks about how many
people adapted hip–hop culture such as beat boxing because of hard times and schools losing their
music and art programs. "The young people of the borough, deprived of the opportunity for physical
instruments, showcasing their skills the way their parents and

Lasting Impacts of Funk and Disco
The Lasting Impacts of Funk and Disco
The transition from the 1960's to the 1970's was a rough one. A decade characterized by the
supposed defeat of poverty and racism as well as the conquest of space, was subsequently and
surprisingly followed by a decade of chaos and disorder in the world. The country was running out
of promise, the troops were running out of Vietnam, and the President was running out of office.
Luckily however, the emergence of great music simply could not be affected by the unfortunate
economic and social issues going on in the world at the time. The surfacing of both funk and disco
characterized the time period starting from the late 1960's into the 1970's, and although each music
movement had its own style, its own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film actually became extremely popular not only in the United States, but all over the globe. Its
soundtrack, written by the Bee Gees, reached number one on the charts in the United States, Europe,
and Asia. Travolta became an idol to millions of people, and a well know sex symbol for people in
the Western world for many, many years. Another one of the major differences between disco and
funk is the fact that disco had a much more impactful crossover appeal on other styles of music.
Disco's popularity led to many artists to record disco–like songs. Obviously, their songs weren't pure
disco, but pop or rock songs with disco influences. Finally during the late 1970's, the world saw the
decline of disco. The movement that was characterized by "shiny, glittery surfaces; high heels and
luscious lipstick; jam–packed jeans and cut pecs," (Shapiro 3) was finally coming to an end. It
started as a strong anti–disco sentiment developed among rock fans and musicians, particularly in
the United States. The heightened hostility took the form of small riots in various places around the
country, graffiti, and t–shirts voicing the protestors' hatred toward it. Then, the day that disco died
came on July 12, 1979 during Disco Demolition Night. An anti–disco demonstration in Chicago
resulted in horrid consequences and havoc in Comiskey Park, as well as other parts of Chicago.

Yvonne Daniels
Yvonne Daniels, also known as the first lady of radio, is an influential women who paved the way
for more women to become disc jockeys. In her 30 plus year career in radio she worked at WYNR,
WCFL, WSDM, WLS–AM, WVON, WGCI–AM/FM , and WNUA. Daniels was an African
American "broadcast pioneer".
She was born in 1937 in Jacksonville, Florida, to Billy Daniels a jazz musician. Growing up she was
always surrounded by music. She has said that her dad influenced her taste in music from an early
age. He would play soothing blues and jazz tunes during her early life. When she was 17, Daniels

Connie Szerszen, Cindy Morgan Danae Alexander, Linda Ellerbee, Dr. Cody Sweet, Kitty Loewy,
Susan Payne, Janice Gears and Glorie June made up WSDM all female on air disc jockeys and host.
WSDM then gained the nickname "the station with the girls". Which didn't hurt during the 70s, due
to the "liberation of women". Yvonne Daniels drew in her audience night after night. Soon the
station gave her the privilege to program her own music. She was the only jockey at the station with
this privilege. From 7pm– 11pm you could find "Daniel's' Den" playing jazz through the airway. She
ended up dominating the night and consistently ranking No. 1 in the time slot. She stayed at WSDM

The History of Disk Jockey's
In 1935, American commentator Walter Winchell coined the term "disc jockey" (the combination of
"disc", referring to the disc records, and "jockey", which is an operator of a machine) as a
description of radio announcer Martin Block, the first announcer to become a star. While his
audience was awaiting developments in the Lindbergh kidnapping, Block played records and created
the illusion that he was broadcasting from a ballroom, with the nation's top dance bands performing
live. The show, which he called Make Believe Ballroom, was an instant hit. The term "disc jockey"
appeared in print in Variety in 1941.[5]

Turntablism, the art of using turntables not only to play music, but to manipulate sound and create
original music, began to develop.
In 1974, Technics released the first SL–1200 turntable, which evolved into the SL–1200 MK2 in
1979, which as of the mid–2000s remains the industry standard for deejaying. In 1974, German
electronic music band Kraftwerk released the 22–minute song "Autobahn", which takes up the entire
first side of that LP. Years later, Kraftwerk would become a significant influence on hip hop artists
such as Afrika Bambaataa and house music pioneer Frankie Knuckles. During the mid 1970s, Hip
hop music and culture began to emerge, originating among urban African Americans and Latinos in
New York City. The four main elements of hip hop culture were MCing (rapping), DJing, graffiti,
and breakdancing.
In the mid–1970s, the soul–funk blend of dance pop known as Disco took off in the mainstream pop
charts in the United States and Europe, causing discotheques to experience a rebirth. Unlike many
late 1960s, clubs, which featured live bands, discotheques used the DJs selection and mixing of
records as the entertainment. In 1975, Record pools began, enabling disc jockeys access to newer
music from the industry in an efficient method.
In 1976, American DJ, editor, and producer Walter Gibbons remixed "Ten Percent" by Double
Exposure, one of the earliest commercially released 12" singles (aka "maxi–single"). In 1977, Hip

Hip Hop Culture And Its Impact On The American Society
EEverything can be defined as a culture as long as a lifestyle is determined by a group of people
who integrate the knowledge. Hip–Hop is not only considered as a musical genre, but also a culture.
The Hip–Hop culture is an artistic movement that people uses to express themselves by practicing
social and artistic habits. Some of these habits include dancing, and the art of producing music. DJs
and MCs are responsible for producing the music for this group which is defined as rap. MCs, DJs,
and B–Boys form part of this culture, they identify themselves into their own society and try to
make others understand the way they live. As any other culture, Hip–Hop also has specials factors
and beliefs that need to be followed by the members of this group. Hip–Hop culture have evolved
verbal, visual and physical elements that had made an impact in the American society, the three most
important cultural elements are rap music, breakdancing, and the art graffiti.
The Hip–Hop culture has an extensive list of qualities that define the way in which these people live
the experience that Hip–Hop offers them. The primary element in the Hip–Hop music is the rhythm
which in this case is rap. As the article Brothas Gonna Work it Out explains "[R]ap is what you do;
hip hop is what you are. Rap is the act; hip hop is the culture" (48). Hip–Hop is the culture that
create rap music. This music style has special members who are responsible for the rapping and the
rhythm. Disc Jockeys, better known

Hip–Hop
When you hear the phase "Hip–Hop" what do you think of? Music, Dancing, Rapping? Well, it's all
of that and more hip–hop is a culture. According to Webster's dictionary, culture is defined as "the
concepts, habits, skills, arts, instruments, institutions, etc. of a given people in a given period;
civilization." One artist defined hip–hop as "a set of expressions in vocalization, instrumentation,
dancing and the visual arts." More specifically, hip hop is a combination of graffiti, breakdancing,
djing and mcing (also known as rapping), that creates a lifestyle with its own language, style of
dress, music and mind set that's continuously evolving. Most of these art forms originated in New

New York City's subway walls and ten car trains started to become the ideal forum for kids to get
their name known all over the city. This graffiti became famous to the rest of the world in the late
1970's. The subway movement ended in the late 1980's, and, by that time, graffiti had been spread
all over the country and throughout the world. Along with the popularity of graffiti, came the
commercialization of what and many people in the hip–hop culture kept doing it. Graffiti was
typically done by the young and oppressed youth from various ethnic backgrounds as a way of self–
expression and release of creativity. Graffiti is a highly individualized style, which is name oriented
and personal, and since it's a way of artistic expression, graffiti will never die.
Breakdancing is another element that makes up the culture of hip–hop. This form of dancing
emerged in the 1970's. This type of dance came as the DJ changed funk into a more bass and beat
oriented music form. Breakdancing is thought to be very different from other kinds of dancing as it
is performed on the street, while wearing a pair of sneaker and with a piece of cardboard.
Breakdancing is said to have been originated by James Brown and the dance he is popular for...The
Good Foot. It is a form of expression, by which one dance makes a move, and then other dancer
understands that body language and does a move in response. It is thought that because of

The idea of the Baby DJ School gained massive amounts of popularity via media and internet and
became a spectacular day–care for kids. The school has gained so much popularity recently that
even Vice Media, a broadcasting company that reaches a large global audience, published a video
about Baby DJ School. The video contains dozens of awesome images of babies playing around
with the equipment, along with lots of positive vibes from the teacher and the parents. However it is
not an advertisement. Vice displays a more realistic portrayal of the school instead of advertise it to
a specific audience.
The success of the school is due to the daycare aspects as well as the learning piece that goes along
with listening to music and rhythms at such a young age. Not only are babies increasing their motor
functions and brain development, but the parents can listen and feel involved in the process of their
kid learning something new. This type of music education at such young age could change the entire
way that education has worked in the past for infants. The multifaceted benefits of the program far
outweigh the disincentives of a normal daycare education, now students go learn how to mix music
with turntables and spin records instead of going to story–time. The school only costs 200 dollars
per class and I believe signing a kid to this school will be one of the greatest investments that a
parent can do for forging strong bonds with the

Why Is Hip Hop Important In Everyday Life?
Music has always been an influence in everyday life for every race and ethnicity since the beginning
of time. As the human race evolved, so has the musical landscape. Music in the past was used to tell
stories and express significant events, but todays musicians still portray everyday life in their music.
Since the emergence of hip hop in the early seventies in New York, it allowed the voices of Blacks
and Hispanics to express their daily struggles through music. That's why hip hop plays a key part in
many peoples' everyday lives because it gives them a way to express how they feel and the
circumstances they are in. Hip Hop was a gateway that gave young creative minds an avenue to

Pioneer HDJ–1000 Review
HDJ–1000 stand next to the heavyweights of DJ cans. But these are meant solely for DJs working in
a noisy club. If you are an audiophile, this may not be the best pick for you.
Sound Quality – 7.5/10
HDJ–1000 has a specifically colored output. The mid–bass are given a big enhancement at the cost
of other parts of the spectrum. The lower parts of the bass can sometimes be totally lost. Vocals
often become shrill and treble becomes very prominent.
That said, the cans do deliver what they promise. By enhancing mid–bass they allow you to mix
your tracks while another track is playing loudly over the club sound system. It is the kick that
matters the most for you at that point in time.
Design – 8/10
It was probably the first set of DJ cans that got the look right. As a DJ, the sound may be the most
important aspect of your work, but you also want to take pride in the equipment you own. The
prominent color schemes that HDJ–1000 introduced addressed this very well.
The fold down feature was, and still is, a great hit with the DJs. But even bigger hit is the switch that
allows you to switch to a mono output. You can have the headphone over one ear and listen to the
environment sounds with the other – and be sure that you are listening to the whole sound, not just
one half of it.
HDJ–1000 lets you listen in with a single ear by letting you folding one earcup up. It also lets you
twist the headband so the earcup fits behind your ear. The switch works like a

The common message was to go from poverty to extreme success. This gave them hope and big
dreams to make it big one day. It makes people "one–up" each other and thrive to be the best and
have success. Hip Hop artists always state that once they got famous and began getting money, they
moved their family out of the "hood". Once they make it big, they can get endorsed and be even
bigger. It opens doors to many entertainment jobs. Music professor D. Edward Davis said "Rappers
have always been primarily entertainers, and, as such, have stuck to the same topics that African–
American entertainers have used at least since the 1920s and 30s" (Ramanand, Elizabeth).
Many artists throughout the Hip Hop industry have always "kept it real". "If any difference between
Hip Hop of today and 1980s can be felt, it's enhanced need to 'keep it real' or represent one's
upbringing and daily realities, even when that reality involves violence, prostitution, etc, that is
direct influence of Gangsta Rap" (Ramanand, Elizabeth). This shows that no matter how bad it is,
they keep the reality real. That could show teens what it is and that it is bad and to not do it. Hip
Hop artists also keep it real by doing their own thing and starting their own trends. Corporate
executives look to Hip Hop for the next big thing. This is real good for promotions. It is the best

College of Engineering and Wireless, located in San Jose, California, under the authority of radio

It also can bring a lot of cons and complications. Some of the pros of becoming a DJ are the
minimal education requirements, training that is often on the job, and the possibility of becoming a

as the low median salary (around 30,000 a year). Or the fact that radio stations stay open 24 hours so
there is no guaranteed work time for any employee. One other big con is the heavy competition for
available jobs. Everyone wants to become a radio broadcaster due to the lack of education one
needs. "With the growth of available jobs has little to no change, it is difficult to find open
positions." (Pros and Cons of Radio Broadcasting). It is a true statement that the job outlook has
stayed at 0% from 2013 to 2014, one can tell that finding an open position can be close to
impossible. "You should be able to find a career in this if you meet the very specific standards of the

to fully explain how rap became what it is today. The way it emerged in 1970's.
There are honestly only two ways I can start off by telling you about what I have learned about
where hip–hop came from which no doubt it was DJ Kool Herc but even by telling you that before
that the sound that was really popular in New York was disco. This was very shortly before Herc.

Hip Hop History
Hip hop or hip–hop is a subculture and art movement developed in South Bronx in New York City
during the late 1970s.[1][2][3][4][5] While people unfamiliar with Hip Hop culture often use the
expression "hip hop" to refer exclusively to hip hop music (also called "rap"),[6] Hip Hop is
characterized by nine distinct elements or expressive realms, of which Hip Hop music is only four
elements (rapping, djaying, beatboxing and breaking). Afrika Bambaataa of the Hip Hop collective
Zulu Nation outlined the pillars of Hip Hip culture, coining the terms: "rapping" (also called MCing
or emceeing), a rhythmic vocal rhyming style (orality); DJing (and turntablism), which is making
music with record players and DJ mixers (aural/sound and music creation); ... Show more content on

Members of the scene plugged in the amplifiers for their instruments and PA speakers into the
lampposts on 163rd Street and Prospect Avenue and used their live music events to break down
racial barriers between African–Americans, Puerto Ricans, Whites and other ethnic groups.
Jamaican immigrant DJ Kool Herc also played a key role in developing Hip–Hop music. At 1520
Sedgwick Avenue, Herc mixed samples of existing records and deejayed percussion "breaks",
mixing this music with his own Jamaican–style "toasting" (a style of chanting and boastful talking
over a microphone) to rev up the crowd and dancers. Kool Herc is credited as the "father" of Hip–
Hop for developing the key DJ techniques that, along with rapping, founded the hip hop music style
by creating rhythmic beats by looping "breaks" (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive
pattern) on two turntables. This was later accompanied by "rapping" or "MCing", a rhythmic style of
chanting or speaking poetry/lyrics, and beatboxing, a percussive vocal technique used to create beats
to go along with an MC or rappers' rhymes.[citation needed] An original form of dancing called
breakdancing, which later became accompanied by popping, locking and other dance moves, which
was done to the accompaniment of hip–hop songs played on boom boxes and particular styles of

when Thomas Edison invents the phonograph, the precursor to the record player. Before, the only

Jamaican music and hip hop can be referred to as cousins. One style of Jamaican music is called
toasting. "At first Jamaican toasting began when DJs would "toast" over the music they played with
simple slogans to encourage the dancers. Some of these simple slogans were "Work it, Work it" and
"Move it up" (qtd in Rhodes). The term toast meant words or slogans that a DJ would say over the
music to encourage dancers. These words spoken over music were related to words spoken over
music in rap. Unlike these simple words and slogans that Jamaicans used, the words used over
music in rap are more developed. Jamaican disc jockeys talked over the music they played. Music in
Jamaica was played at blues dances. Blues dances took place in large halls or slum yards. As
toasting popularity increased, so did the lengths of toasts. Shortly after toasting came dubbing. DJs
that dubbed cut back and forth between vocal and instrumental tracks while adjusting bass and
treble.
Rap and toasting both rely on pre recorded sounds. You need a strong beat rapped and a strong beat
toasted. Rap relies more on a hard funk strong beat while Jamaican's relied on beat from Jamaican

negative effect on behavior and susceptible audiences, leading to aggressive behavior in many of
America's youth. There have been many debates over hip–hop and its influence on the youth
community in America. Some people believe that it has a negative impact while others feel that it
does not account for any change in youth society. How does music and human behavior correspond?
What are the negative and positive effects that hip hop has towards America's youth community?.
Hip–Hop is among the top 5 most played genres. The oral creativity the performer uses to generate a

an instructional tool by many instructors to employ it for teaching grammar, mathematics, and the
periodic table. The developing hip–hop started in Bronx New York. The evolution of hip–hop
continues to expand to our present day. It has become a movement and culture that began 30 to 40
years ago. Kool Herc (DJ) is known as being a founder of hip–hop in 1967 when he made his first

considered to be popular? By thoroughly analyzing the methods of accessing the popularity of
music, Billboard Magazine uses in their top 25 dance/electronic songs for November 30th –
December 7th, 2013 this paper aims to discover whether or not popular music charts are the best
implication of what is to be considered popular. The analysis will critically examine the contents of
the chart in order to explain whether or not the methods Billboard used, accurately depict the
popularity of these songs. Whilst exposing the possible effect of using such measures of popularity.
As well, the analysis will discuss the idea of quality in relation to popularity and how the two ideas
don't always mean the same thing. According to Hinds when determining popularity "one of two
variables is used: how many were bought or viewed, or how many dollars were spent on sales or
rentals." (pp. 373) Seeing as Billboard explains that the songs are ranked by a combination of "radio
airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen BDS, sales data as compiled by Nielsen

from a national sample of club DJs" (Billboard, 2013). This statement holds true for Billboard

The American Disc Jockey Essay
The American Disc Jockey
The American Disc Jockey is one of the most important aspects in the development of music,
especially rock–n–roll. Many radio personalities became widely recognized on the notion of them
having a specialized voice or that they are able to provide a wealth of knowledge about the artists
that they play (Eliot, 92). Whatever the situation, the fact remains that disk jockeys have helped to
build an excitement for radio, yesterday, today, and hopefully tomorrow. A day in the life of a disk
jockey is not just about spinning records and announcing the latest contest. What really makes a
good disk jockey is craftsmanship (Sklar, 13). The DJ has to maneuver tangible and intangible

In my opinion, entertainment in rock radio centers around the word music. I feel that any Top 40
disk jockey who is or wants to be successful should keep an eye on his priorities. As far as I'm
concerned, music is first; but I feel just as strongly that the jock is second. A very strong second
(Hall, 122)" This illustrates the point of the DJ personality being the main focus of the listener's
attentions. As movers and shakers of early rock and roll, disk jockeys choose which records they
played, and how many times they played them. The law states that it is a federal crime for any radio
or television station to accept or agree to accept money, services, or anything of value for
broadcasting any material without disclosing acceptance or agreement to accept (Smith, 54). Over
the years, various payola scandals actually helped many artists recording careers; at the same time
helped to end the careers of many disk jockeys. Unfortunately, in radio, the guilt of a few reflects on
the mass. Throughout the years, even in spite of many Grand Jury investigations, payola has not
been abolished. Playlists are extremely tight, and the need to get a record on the playlist is huge
(Passman, 87). As long as this keeps going on, record companies are forced to use whatever means
possible to break through those barriers. I guess in some ways, this leads to payola. In others, it
could lead to psychological warfare between to program directors and

The Evolution Of Hip Hop Culture

contribute to the evolution of the English Language such as: technological advances, interaction and

people watch the advertisements a lot they would start using such words too. Meanwhile, movies
that present the hip hop culture such as Wild Style, Style Wars, and Beat Street and Breakin' exposed
the international audience to hip hop. Not only is the English language changing within the United
States, but it is also changing within foreign English speakers. For instance, in Egypt, many people

When sampling technology and drum machines became widely available to the public for a cheaper

techniques, and other turntablist methods (scratching, mixing, breaks, etc.) were also influenced
from Jamaican dub music. Within NYC, performances of spoken word poetry had an impact quite
large on the post–civil rights era of 1960s–1970s, thus creating the outcome of hip–hop music. As
time progressed and techniques became more evolved, DJs and MCs sought out to vary and improve
their original styles, branching out the recognition of hip–hop across America. It was also during the
early 1970s that "b–boys and b–girls" made their interruption, dancing in the front of the audience at

mixer. The DJ will need some cartridges/needles. He will also need a good pair of headphones. DJ's
would definitely have to vinyl or records ("DJ Equipment").
There are two types of turntables. There are belt drive turntable and a direct drive turntable. Belt
driven decks work by a big rubber band linking round a motor, then round the underside of the deck
plate. The motor makes the band rotate, which in turn makes the plate turn. On direct drive decks,
however, the motor is placed in the center of the deck, which turns the center spindle of the deck
'directly' instead of a rubber band linking the motor. Right now the best turntable on the market is
the Technics SL–1200 Direct Drive Turntable. The SL–1200 Turntable has a pitch lock button. The
pitch lock button has the ability to change the tempo of a song without changing the pitch. This lets
drastically speed up songs with vocals without a "chipmunk" effect. The SL–1200 also has quartz
pitch blend control. The pitch blend control is the effect of the temporary changing of pitch to get
beats in phase. Club DJs typically use their fingers to speed up or slow down the record by
pushing/pulling the record by the label. Some twist the spindle in the center to

Racism: The Mercedes Ladies
As hip hop's first all–female crew of MCs to rock the microphone at old school block parties and
clubs like the Rooftop and Latin Quarters, The Mercedes Ladies paved the way for female rap acts
such as The Sequence, Finesse & Synquis, Salt 'N Pepa, Deadly Venoms, Oaktown 357 and the
Conscious Daughters. Hailing from the South Bronx, The Mercedes Ladies formed in 1976.
Although the group had several member when it started, the classic and most popular line–up
consisted of Sheri Sher, Eve–a–Def, Zena–Z, Tracy T and two DJ's, Baby D (AKA D'Bora) and RD
Smiley. Other members included Sweet P and Sty–Sty (who were later members). According to
Sheri Sher, the Mercedes Ladies started off as a crew of girls from the Bronx who initially wanted to

They quickly earned the respect of their peers by holding their own on stage with hip hop legends
like Kool DJ Herc, Afrika Bambattaa, Busy Bee, Kool DJ Red Alert, Grandmaster Flash & the

didn't make them immune to sexism. "It was a struggle," recalls Sheri–Sher. "We were getting a lot
of street popularity because we were putting our work in. From corner to corner, then they started
setting up shows for us and everything, but we would never get paid. The promoters would pay the
L Brothers and Grandmaster Flash, but when it was time to pay the Mercedes Ladies, we didn't get
paid ." This led them severing ties with Trevor and the L Brothers. The group would go through a
series of subsequent managers and a bad record deal with Def Jam before finally disbanding in the
mid–80s. Unfortunately, the group never recorded an album of their own, but they can be heard on
underground recordings of their early shows and on Donald D's 1984 record, "Don's Groove ". Later
that year, DJ Baby D would later go on to record her own single entitled, "No Sense," under the
moniker D'Bora . She continued recording records under that name until 1998. Sheri–Sher wrote a
historical novel centered on her exploits as a member of The Mercedes Ladies which was published
by Vibe Street Lit . In May of 2014, the Mercedes Ladies were inducted into the Hip Hop Hall of

Disc Jockeys History
A disc jockey, also known as a DJ is a person who mixes different sources of preexisting recorded
music as it is playing. This is typically done in a live setting at night clubs, parties, weddings, and
over live radio. The phrase disc jockey was not even brought into use until the early 1930's and the
first ever live DJ event was held by Jimmy Savile in 1943 and he mixed jazz records for the party
goers. The history of disc jockeys span through decades of disco, jazz, techno, and modern music.
Throughout the history of disc jockeys, one question always lingers in the background. Are disc
jockeys truly musicians? Through much research and analysis, it has been concluded that DJ's are in
fact musicians and I am here to explain why. Disc jockey ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
Are disc jockeys musicians? I firmly believe that disc jockeys are musicians for a number of
reasons. First and foremost, disc jockeys must understand and follow the trends of the music. If a DJ
cannot follow the trends of the music, they will never be successful or create a following. If one is
not musically inclined, following music trends will be basically impossible. Not only must they
follow the trend, they must know how to use the technology to create beats that crowds want to hear.
In order to create such beats, the DJ must know how to mix and interchange beats without
compromising the quality of the music that is produced. For example, Diplo is a world famous DJ
that travels the world performing at shows. However, he is not only a DJ. He is a producer who has
written tracks for Maddon, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Usher and many more. Dipole is also a
record label executive and a songwriter. He is one of the most well rounded men in music and his
simple title is "disc jockey." The part that is mostly unknown is that there are hundreds of other disc
jockeys who hold similar levels of success next to singers, songwriters and producers. After that,
there are thousands of mid fame level disc jockeys that are very successful. Without being a well
rounded musician, a disc jockey would be unable to achieve the levels of success seen in the world

The 4 Elements Of The Movement Of Hip Hop

  • 1. The 4 Elements Of The Movement Of Hip Hop The 4 Elements of the Movement of Hip Hop The Urban Dictionary's definition of Hip Hop is: A name for the 4 elements of the late 70 's New York City renaissance which includes break dancing, emceeing, (rapping) graffiti, and turntablism. Wikipedia's definition is: Hip hop or hip–hop is a subcultural movement that formed during the early 1970s by African–American and Puerto Rican youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City. Hip hop is truly several forms of art used to express emotions visually, aurally, orally, physically. It is then categorized into 4 separate parts: mceeing, Djing, breakdancing and graffiti. All have evolved from when they were first created, shifted over the years and now apply to modern times. Many people have different versions to how Hip Hop was created. The one most often believed is how Dj Kool Herc came across 3 of the components that make up hip hop. When trying to entertain at a birthday party using a turntable, he accidentally expanded a break in the beat. A technique now known as scratching was invented and people began to rhyme, and breakdance during this break. Mceeing or rapping to the beats made by a dj and his turntable, the most popular of the foundations of hip hop, took the Black and Puerto Rican communities by storm. Eventually spreading out from the select neighborhoods, making its way to the rest of the world. Though people were dubious about this style of music becoming popular, now rap music is one of the most listened ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Disc-Jockey's Influence On The Music Industry The history of DJ'ing is a long path all the way back to the early 1900's. People had stated to discover that you could have the same effect on a crowd as bands and orchestras but only some sound equipment and songs by yourself. Many people have no idea how long DJ's have been influencing the music industry and what is to be played on radio stations worldwide. The first known disc–jockey took his place in history in 1909. Ray Newby of California played records from a small transmitter while he was a student in college at the age of 16. By 1910, radio broadcasts had become a very normal, but still exciting part of life. The world's first DJ dance party was thrown by Jimmy Savile in 1943; he mainly played jazz records for the people who attended these parties. A few years later, Savile became the first person to use turntables live at a dance party so that he could a continuous flow of music playing. In Kingston, Jamaica, promoters would call themselves DJs which would throw giant dance parties in the streets, and DJs would blast their music from huge PA speaker systems. Jamaicans called these party entrepreneurs sound systems. The city of New York became the breeding ground for experimentation with the music and style of DJs. In the 1970's, DJ Kool Herc and Afrikan Bambatta were deemed the "fathers of hip hop", throwing huge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The building of hip hop culture in the Bronx caused media culture, cultural diversity, changing economy and citizens rights and responsibilities to arise through the actions of hip hop culture. In the beginning, hip hop culture started and spread because of the changing economy and hard times for all, soon graffiti and hip hop culture became a statement throughout the world and was a media that spread throughout the world. Hip– hop emerged partially because of the diversity of the people living in the Bronx at the time. Africa Bilbao, a person that lived in the Bronx in 60s, said, "I do not like to get into it when we call them Puerto Ricans, they are Africans like us...They are the African that kept the Drums, they kept the gods of santeria alive. In the 60's , Black and Puerto Ricans were always playing the Conga. Always had it the rhythms." This shows that the people came together in the Bronx even though they were such different cultures. The diversity of the people of the Bronx and the fact they came together helped adapt when the hip hop movement started. Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Dj Herc were accepted because the people of the Bronx loved music and dance. As de–industrialization progressed many people in the Bronx started having outdoor parties and plugged their stereos into lamp post. This activity and the parties brought many people from different cultures together because of the hard time the Bronx were facing. The parties gave hope to the people of the Bronx. The changing economy brought many changes to culture and inspired the hip–hop movement partly. • 9. Lasting Impacts of Funk and Disco The Lasting Impacts of Funk and Disco The transition from the 1960's to the 1970's was a rough one. A decade characterized by the supposed defeat of poverty and racism as well as the conquest of space, was subsequently and surprisingly followed by a decade of chaos and disorder in the world. The country was running out of promise, the troops were running out of Vietnam, and the President was running out of office. Luckily however, the emergence of great music simply could not be affected by the unfortunate economic and social issues going on in the world at the time. Its soundtrack, written by the Bee Gees, reached number one on the charts in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Travolta became an idol to millions of people, and a well know sex symbol for people in the Western world for many, many years. Another one of the major differences between disco and funk is the fact that disco had a much more impactful crossover appeal on other styles of music. Disco's popularity led to many artists to record disco–like songs. Obviously, their songs weren't pure disco, but pop or rock songs with disco influences. Finally during the late 1970's, the world saw the decline of disco. The movement that was characterized by "shiny, glittery surfaces; high heels and luscious lipstick; jam–packed jeans and cut pecs," (Shapiro 3) was finally coming to an end. It started as a strong anti–disco sentiment developed among rock fans and musicians, particularly in the United States. The heightened hostility took the form of small riots in various places around the country, graffiti, and t–shirts voicing the protestors' hatred toward it. Then, the day that disco died came on July 12, 1979 during Disco Demolition Night. The History of Disk Jockey's In 1935, American commentator Walter Winchell coined the term "disc jockey" (the combination of "disc", referring to the disc records, and "jockey", which is an operator of a machine) as a description of radio announcer Martin Block, the first announcer to become a star. While his audience was awaiting developments in the Lindbergh kidnapping, Block played records and created the illusion that he was broadcasting from a ballroom, with the nation's top dance bands performing live. The show, which he called Make Believe Ballroom, was an instant hit. In 1974, Technics released the first SL–1200 turntable, which evolved into the SL–1200 MK2 in 1979, which as of the mid–2000s remains the industry standard for deejaying. In 1974, German electronic music band Kraftwerk released the 22–minute song "Autobahn", which takes up the entire first side of that LP. Years later, Kraftwerk would become a significant influence on hip hop artists such as Afrika Bambaataa and house music pioneer Frankie Knuckles. During the mid 1970s, Hip hop music and culture began to emerge, originating among urban African Americans and Latinos in New York City. The four main elements of hip hop culture were MCing (rapping), DJing, graffiti, and breakdancing. In the mid–1970s, the soul–funk blend of dance pop known as Disco took off in the mainstream pop charts in the United States and Europe, causing discotheques to experience a rebirth. According to Webster's dictionary, culture is defined as "the concepts, habits, skills, arts, instruments, institutions, etc. of a given people in a given period; civilization." One artist defined hip–hop as "a set of expressions in vocalization, instrumentation, dancing and the visual arts." More specifically, hip hop is a combination of graffiti, breakdancing, djing and mcing (also known as rapping), that creates a lifestyle with its own language, style of dress, music and mind set that's continuously evolving. New York City's subway walls and ten car trains started to become the ideal forum for kids to get their name known all over the city. This graffiti became famous to the rest of the world in the late 1970's. The subway movement ended in the late 1980's, and, by that time, graffiti had been spread all over the country and throughout the world. Along with the popularity of graffiti, came the commercialization of what and many people in the hip–hop culture kept doing it. Graffiti was typically done by the young and oppressed youth from various ethnic backgrounds as a way of self– expression and release of creativity. Graffiti is a highly individualized style, which is name oriented and personal, and since it's a way of artistic expression, graffiti will never die. Breakdancing is another element that makes up the culture of hip–hop. This form of dancing emerged in the 1970's. This type of dance came as the DJ changed funk into a more bass and beat oriented music form. Breakdancing is thought to be very different from other kinds of dancing as it is performed on the street, while wearing a pair of sneaker and with a piece of cardboard. Breakdancing is said to have been originated by James Brown and the dance he is popular for...The Good Foot. The educational experience of Baby DJ School is a portal into the wonderful worlds of electro, hip–hop, and house music. The idea of the Baby DJ School gained massive amounts of popularity via media and internet and became a spectacular day–care for kids. The school has gained so much popularity recently that even Vice Media, a broadcasting company that reaches a large global audience, published a video about Baby DJ School. The video contains dozens of awesome images of babies playing around with the equipment, along with lots of positive vibes from the teacher and the parents. However it is not an advertisement. Vice displays a more realistic portrayal of the school instead of advertise it to a specific audience. The success of the school is due to the daycare aspects as well as the learning piece that goes along with listening to music and rhythms at such a young age. Not only are babies increasing their motor functions and brain development, but the parents can listen and feel involved in the process of their kid learning something new. This type of music education at such young age could change the entire way that education has worked in the past for infants. The multifaceted benefits of the program far outweigh the disincentives of a normal daycare education, now students go learn how to mix music with turntables and spin records instead of going to story–time. The school only costs 200 dollars per class and I believe signing a kid to this school will be one of the greatest investments that a parent can do for forging strong bonds with the ... The excitement, nervousness, and overall experience was something that I did not know would have such an impact on my life and also future. I was eighteen years old when my story began. I had landed my dream job with a local entertainment company. I was learning the ins and outs of the entertainment world and it was more overwhelming than I imagined it to be. I never realized how many people and how much effort it took trying to book even one show. I was living my best dream, or so I thought I was. Traveling all the time really took a toll on me. Ninety percent of the time I was by myself for 2–3 days at a time. While I was home most of the time during the week, I was still working at the office and doing odds and ends jobs to prepare for the upcoming weekend. I missed a lot of family events, holidays, and time with my friends. I was really caught up in the moment, so I forgot that I was still young and was missing out on that. I tried to stay on with the company for as long as possible, but the time came that I had to make a choice on whether to continue on, or find a new career to focus on for the future. After five full years, I decided to call it quits. I wanted to find something that would help provide for my future and that I could be around for my friends and family. If you are an audiophile, this may not be the best pick for you. Sound Quality – 7.5/10 HDJ–1000 has a specifically colored output. The mid–bass are given a big enhancement at the cost of other parts of the spectrum. The lower parts of the bass can sometimes be totally lost. Vocals often become shrill and treble becomes very prominent. That said, the cans do deliver what they promise. By enhancing mid–bass they allow you to mix your tracks while another track is playing loudly over the club sound system. It is the kick that matters the most for you at that point in time. Design – 8/10 It was probably the first set of DJ cans that got the look right. As a DJ, the sound may be the most important aspect of your work, but you also want to take pride in the equipment you own. The prominent color schemes that HDJ–1000 introduced addressed this very well. The fold down feature was, and still is, a great hit with the DJs. But even bigger hit is the switch that allows you to switch to a mono output. You can have the headphone over one ear and listen to the environment sounds with the other – and be sure that you are listening to the whole sound, not just one half of it. Hip Hop History Hip hop or hip–hop is a subculture and art movement developed in South Bronx in New York City during the late 1970s.[1][2][3][4][5] While people unfamiliar with Hip Hop culture often use the expression "hip hop" to refer exclusively to hip hop music (also called "rap"),[6] Hip Hop is characterized by nine distinct elements or expressive realms, of which Hip Hop music is only four elements (rapping, djaying, beatboxing and breaking). Afrika Bambaataa of the Hip Hop collective Zulu Nation outlined the pillars of Hip Hip culture, coining the terms: "rapping" (also called MCing or emceeing), a rhythmic vocal rhyming style (orality); DJing (and turntablism), which is making music with record players and DJ mixers (aural/sound and music creation); ... Jamaican immigrant DJ Kool Herc also played a key role in developing Hip–Hop music. At 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, Herc mixed samples of existing records and deejayed percussion "breaks", mixing this music with his own Jamaican–style "toasting" (a style of chanting and boastful talking over a microphone) to rev up the crowd and dancers. Kool Herc is credited as the "father" of Hip– Hop for developing the key DJ techniques that, along with rapping, founded the hip hop music style by creating rhythmic beats by looping "breaks" (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables. This was later accompanied by "rapping" or "MCing", a rhythmic style of chanting or speaking poetry/lyrics, and beatboxing, a percussive vocal technique used to create beats to go along with an MC or rappers' rhymes.[citation needed] An original form of dancing called breakdancing, which later became accompanied by popping, locking and other dance moves, which was done to the accompaniment of hip–hop songs played on boom boxes and particular styles of hip–hop dress and hair also ... The evolution of hip–hop continues to expand to our present day. It has become a movement and culture that began 30 to 40 years ago. Kool Herc (DJ) is known as being a founder of hip–hop in 1967 when he made his first gig at his sister's birthday party. Alterations within the culture have taken the originality to a whole new level with technology taking its jump and commercialism overrunning the music industry. • 56. Analysis of Popular Music Charts In order to determine whether a song is popular or not many people consult one of the various popular music charts. However, do these so called 'popular music charts' accurately depict what is considered to be popular? By thoroughly analyzing the methods of accessing the popularity of music, Billboard Magazine uses in their top 25 dance/electronic songs for November 30th – December 7th, 2013 this paper aims to discover whether or not popular music charts are the best implication of what is to be considered popular. The analysis will critically examine the contents of the chart in order to explain whether or not the methods Billboard used, accurately depict the popularity of these songs. Whilst exposing the possible effect of using such measures of popularity. As well, the analysis will discuss the idea of quality in relation to popularity and how the two ideas don't always mean the same thing. According to Hinds when determining popularity "one of two variables is used: how many were bought or viewed, or how many dollars were spent on sales or rentals." (pp. 373) Seeing as Billboard explains that the songs are ranked by a combination of "radio airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen BDS, sales data as compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, streaming activity data by online music sources tracked by Nielsen BDS and reports from a national sample of club DJs" (Billboard, 2013). • 58. Glitch Mob Research Paper The Glitch Mob is an electronic music project based out of Los Angeles, California. Starting off as a small music group, the group has now grown into one of the largest acts in not only the dance music scene but the music scene in general playing in just about every major festival and major playing venue imaginable. What sets The Glitch Mob apart from all of the other dance music acts is their unique style of music. With their name being "The Glitch Mob" it would be easy to assume that their music would just simply fall under the "glitch" category; that their music is largely just based off funky noises from the computer, but that could not be more untrue. Many artists chain themselves down to one genre, and there is nothing wrong with that but The Glitch Mob does not like to define themselves by one genre and that is evident by ... I would still highly recommend checking out the album simply due to its great versatility as a mild trancy piece that is great to listen to alone in the evening, as a piece of mid–paced electronic dance music or just to listen to the same way you would with any rock/metal/hip–hop/etc. album" (Harris, "The Glitch Mob, Drink the Sea"). With the success of their debut album, the group went on a world tour. Shortly after the tour ended, edIT sat down with Taylor from the music blogging website The Music Ninja to talk about the group's latest album "Drink the Sea". As said earlier, their music does not fall neatly into one genre and their album "Drink the Sea" is a great example of this and is something that edIT specifically addressed in his interview when asked "This album is not "Glitch" but of course according to the name of your guys' group Glitch Mob, what kind of genre or number of genres would you say completely help to define this album?" (Taylor, "The Glitch Mob Interview). He responded saying "I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In order to understand how American Graffiti depicts a teen experience the camera, sound, characters and mis–en–scene will be analysed. It will be discussed on how Lucas portrays teen experiences through each character 's action and how their teen experience changes through the film through the use of the camera, sound and mis–en–scene. Also, it will be discussed how each characters teen experience differs through the use of the camera, sound and mis–en–scene. In the hop scene, Curt is seen walking down an empty school hall wall walking towards a locker. The camera dollies towards the locker following Curt's movements as he turns the dials on the lock to open the locker. As he struggles to open the locker, he begins to walk away. A teen experience of growing up can be seen as Curt is unable to unlock what is presumed to be his locker, as the code of the locker may have changed as he has now finished school and is going off to college. In addition, in a scene where John is pulled over by a police officer, where he is accused of being seen drag racing in which he denies being there. The police officer writes and hands him a ticket. • 62. The American Disc Jockey Essay The American Disc Jockey The American Disc Jockey is one of the most important aspects in the development of music, especially rock–n–roll. Many radio personalities became widely recognized on the notion of them having a specialized voice or that they are able to provide a wealth of knowledge about the artists that they play (Eliot, 92). Whatever the situation, the fact remains that disk jockeys have helped to build an excitement for radio, yesterday, today, and hopefully tomorrow. A day in the life of a disk jockey is not just about spinning records and announcing the latest contest. What really makes a good disk jockey is craftsmanship (Sklar, 13). The DJ has to maneuver tangible and intangible objects, as well as cue up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In my opinion, entertainment in rock radio centers around the word music. I feel that any Top 40 disk jockey who is or wants to be successful should keep an eye on his priorities. As far as I'm concerned, music is first; but I feel just as strongly that the jock is second. A very strong second (Hall, 122)" This illustrates the point of the DJ personality being the main focus of the listener's attentions. As movers and shakers of early rock and roll, disk jockeys choose which records they played, and how many times they played them. The law states that it is a federal crime for any radio or television station to accept or agree to accept money, services, or anything of value for broadcasting any material without disclosing acceptance or agreement to accept (Smith, 54). Over the years, various payola scandals actually helped many artists recording careers; at the same time helped to end the careers of many disk jockeys. Unfortunately, in radio, the guilt of a few reflects on the mass. Throughout the years, even in spite of many Grand Jury investigations, payola has not been abolished. Playlists are extremely tight, and the need to get a record on the playlist is huge (Passman, 87). As long as this keeps going on, record companies are forced to use whatever means possible to break through those barriers. I guess in some ways, this leads to payola. In others, it could lead to psychological warfare between to program directors and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

DJ's would definitely have to vinyl or records ("DJ Equipment"). There are two types of turntables. There are belt drive turntable and a direct drive turntable. Belt driven decks work by a big rubber band linking round a motor, then round the underside of the deck plate. The motor makes the band rotate, which in turn makes the plate turn. On direct drive decks, however, the motor is placed in the center of the deck, which turns the center spindle of the deck 'directly' instead of a rubber band linking the motor. Right now the best turntable on the market is the Technics SL–1200 Direct Drive Turntable. The SL–1200 Turntable has a pitch lock button. The pitch lock button has the ability to change the tempo of a song without changing the pitch. This lets drastically speed up songs with vocals without a "chipmunk" effect. The SL–1200 also has quartz pitch blend control. The pitch blend control is the effect of the temporary changing of pitch to get beats in phase. Club DJs typically use their fingers to speed up or slow down the record by pushing/pulling the record by the label. Some twist the spindle in the center to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Are disc jockeys musicians? I firmly believe that disc jockeys are musicians for a number of reasons. First and foremost, disc jockeys must understand and follow the trends of the music. If a DJ cannot follow the trends of the music, they will never be successful or create a following. If one is not musically inclined, following music trends will be basically impossible. Not only must they follow the trend, they must know how to use the technology to create beats that crowds want to hear. In order to create such beats, the DJ must know how to mix and interchange beats without compromising the quality of the music that is produced. For example, Diplo is a world famous DJ that travels the world performing at shows. However, he is not only a DJ. He is a producer who has written tracks for Maddon, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Usher and many more. Dipole is also a record label executive and a songwriter.
