The document analyzes three music magazines: Kerrang!, Rock Sound, and Alternative Press. For Kerrang!, it notes its large market share and popularity boosted by social media sharing. Rock Sound has a median age of 21 and aims for a younger audience of 15-24 year olds, especially females. Alternative Press has a wider age range and aims more for males, using masculine colors. All three magazines thrive on fans sharing content online and aim to maintain relevance through up-to-date content and developing relationships with readers.
2. KERRANG!
Its clear to see that Kerrang has a huge market share in music
magazines around the world, with thousands of readers and sharers.
Social media is also boosting Kerrang’s popularity and fame as teens
tweet and share all about the latest magazine or headliners.
The mean age is relatively
high for a music magazine of
this music genre, although
they show that they believe
they have a young age mean
compared to their other
Bauer magazines such as
mojo and Q.
3. KERRANG!
As you can see here are a range of Rajar, NRS & ABC statistics that support the
flow of Kerrang’s popularity and increase in recognisability.
The chart at the bottom indicates how high the circulation and readership
gets and how it changes
its range throughout the
years.
4. ROCK SOUND
Rocksound is a music magazine who is published monthly, and
is significantly less recognised and popular than Kerrang!
Rock sound has a
median age of 21 which
again is average for a
music magazine of a
rock genre and
representation.
As you can see they
have done significant
research into their
audience and can
identify common
interests and activities
that they attend, and
can see how they intend
to keep their readers
intrigued.
Being a monthly magazine gives them
the benefit of seeming unique and
rare, making their information and
content a little more exciting, although
it may not be 100% up to date.
5. ROCK SOUND
Here its clear to see what target audience Rock
sound aim to entice.
The majority of their readers and female, like
mine. And the age range is wide going from 15-24
meaning they have a range of age appropriate
content to put into their magazine.
Linking to social groups, rocksound mention the
expenditure that their audience spend on
fashion, this could have been added to reflect the
importance of image and how this magazine may
influence the fashion and style their readers want
to put across. (also fitting into females being their
lead gender)
Like Kerrang, Rock sound is accessed by its
readers not only through the magazines but
through apps and social networks, allowing its
popularity to spread and gather new and excited
readers.
6. Alternative Press
The age range for alternative press is significantly wider than
Kerrang and Rock sound, this may be due to the content and
genres that are put into this magazine.
Although this magazine is aimed towards males rather than
females, un like mine they have chosen to use more masculine
colours rather than gender neutral, although the girls who read
this magazine may not be bothered about the colour
schemes, more the content.
Rock sound is a good magazine to get ideas from as
it clearly states what is in the magazine and what
techniques and features they use to draw in their
audience and keep them entertained.
7. Alternative Press
Similar to the other 2 magazines, Alternative
press also thrives on its fans sharing and talking
about the magazine online and also on the
radio which is very popular with the age range
of their target audience. They even think of
ways to increase popularity using
technology, looking into apps and online
reading.
Again the magazine contains a lot of relevant
and up to date content, with the intentions of
making the reader feel as though they have a
relationship with the product, this can be done
through synthetic representation which is most
likely used in articles and band interviews.
