The document discusses a music magazine product created to challenge conventions of mainstream magazines. It uses direct address and features a popular song to draw in readers. It also includes social media links like Facebook and Spotify that would appeal to its target young audience. The target audience is described as younger people aged 16-25, represented through vibrant colors, who have an interest in chart music. The ideal media institution to distribute the magazine would be Bauer Media, as they already own many music magazines and platforms, allowing for synergy across media.
How mainstream magazines influenced an original music publication
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. Before creating my music magazine I looked at the codes and
conventions of mainstream magazines. I have included direct
mode of address to draw the reader in your eye is draw to it. The
name ‘The Chart’ is linked in to the genre as it is a magazine
about the top 40 music charts. Clearly linking in to the chart and
the genre. The main graphic is Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson. This
also links to the genre as their song ‘uptown funk’ was on top of
the chart for a number of weeks and a hit song. I have also
included convergent links in the forms of Facebook, Twitter and
spotify. I have included this because my magazine is aimed at
younger people and most young people have a form of social
media such as facebook and twitter. Also, as a music magazine
my target audience will enjoy music and spotify has recently
emerged as a new way to listen to music so these convergent
links would work very well in my magazine.
3. How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
4. My target audience for my magazine is younger people aged
16-25 this is represented through the use of right colours to
represent the vibrancy of the age range. The magazine is also
aimed at both sexes male and female. Although the primary
colour is blue connoted with the male sex the equally heavy use
of white and colours with no connotation to a gender help
contrast this making it a unisex magazine. The interest of my
target audience will be chart music, because of this I have used
links to spotify and V festival this is attractive to my target
audience as the genre of music at V festival is the genre of my
magazine. My audience would be C1 demographic although I
am aiming at the young people I would expect them to be
students with jobs in order to fund their own interests and
hobbies such as going to festivals and affording the magazine
for £2.00 each week.
5. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
6. The media institution that might distribute my magazine would be
Bauer media. This is because Bauer already own many magazines
and television channels with the music genre so synergy with
these magazines would make it easier to sell my magazine. Also,
Bauers reputation is very high within the media community as they
are one of the biggest media institutions. Also, Bauer as a
conglomerate would aid the synergy in my magazine. Bauer own
many radio stations, making them a multi media platform also
aiding with advertisement.
