This document outlines an instruction session on using the Taylor Library and literature searching resources for nursing students. The agenda includes an overview of the Taylor Library basics, a literature searching tutorial, and an introduction to using RefWorks citation management software. The literature searching section discusses developing a search strategy including selecting a topic of interest, constructing search statements, choosing appropriate databases, and implementing searches. The RefWorks portion demonstrates how to set up an account, export citations from databases, organize references into folders, and generate bibliographies in APA style. • Taylor library uses LC (or Library of Congress)
call numbers
• WY = nursing

6. But... just to make it confusing
• Print journals of the same subject are all
shelved in the same section (all of W is
together)
• But within the W section, journals are shelved
alphabetically by title.

together using AND and OR Boolean operators

• Enter the search terms one at a time
• Search subject headings first
• Then search keywords
• Combine your synonyms first using OR
• Them combine the different concepts using AND
• Finally... apply limiters
And adjust accordingly.... If no results, try removing some terms... If
too many, try adding more

• Conduct the search in either CINAHL,
OvidMEDLINE, or SCOPUS
 When you are finished, please don’t close your
browser window or log off – we’ll be using these
searches to work with RefWorks

• Open a new browser
window and go to

• Select “RefWorks”
• Sign up for an individual
account
• Register

28. Step 2: Create a Folder
• Under the Folder menu header, select “create
new folder”
• Name it “N3322E Scholarly Review”
• Log out of RefWorks

29. Step 3: Export Citations from your
Database
• Each database works a little differently, so
please follow the instruction handouts for
CINAHL, OvidMEDLINE and SCOPUS

30. Step 4: Move the citations into
your folder
• View your “Last Imported Folder”
• Select all the citations and put them into your
N3322E folder

31. Step 5: Create a Bibliography
• Select “Bibliography” from the tool bar
• Select APA as your output style
• Select “Format a Bibliography from a List of
References”
• Select “References from a Folder” and pick
your N3322E folder
• Click “Create Bibliography”
