Professional Skills – Presentations Presenter: Christian Sinclair, MD – csinclair@kchospice.org The three aspects of making a good presentation become an excellent presentation include: PREPARATION – DELIVERY – VISUAL AIDES PREPARATION (For details see the Presentation Preparation Worksheet) What is the purpose of presenting? Who is your audience? What are the logistics of the presentation? For the presentation: Topic Choice What does my audience expect to gain? Try to select your topic What do they already know? Challenge your own knowledge What are my key points? Always narrow your topic What materials do I need? If a repeated talk: Get up to date information Work on sounding fresh, enthusiastic Develop a Presentation Structure Introduction -> Central theme -> Discussion -> Conclusion Consider a pre-introduction: to create ambience and tone also like pre-show entertainment/education DELIVERY Stage Fright Gestures & Facial Vocalization Practice, practice, practice Expressions Change volume when Breathe deeply Ask a friend for observation appropriate Double-check equipment Don’t be afraid of gestures Aim for a lower tone Avoid reading your slides Smile sincerely Aim for a slower speed Stand tall Look in the mirror E-nun-ci-ate Smile naturally Use the active voice Don’t rest on the podium Bias-free language Hands away from your mouth Answering Questions Repeat/summarize the question Acknowledge/thank the person OK to say, “I don’t know”, But offer some follow-up Remain calm VISUAL AIDES Shorten time to convey information, Enhance recall of information, Enhance trust Don’t just use them because they are there. Your presentation should never be your PowerPoint alone PowerPoint Basics Flip Charts Handouts 5 & 5 rule Can increase the energy and Before, during or after? Five lines interaction with audience but Depends on content & Five words per line also have drawbacks: audience Consistency, Spell Checking legibility, spelling, talking Consider: edited version of away from audience slides, posting online, fill in the blanks, highlights” START AND END ON TIME!!
