Preliminary Research Rebecca Maul
The masthead of this magazine is very large and can be observed from a far distance The image is very large which attracts the customer. They can immediately realise who the celebrity is and this is how it makes it sell. Customers are attracted by either their role model or someone they admire such as this celebrity The image shows the customer the target reader for this magazine is a female, also considering the puffs and cover lines. The magazine quotes a puff saying “Get the LOVE You Deserve”, “Make More MONEY and Be the Boss”. Tyra Banks is a good example for women as she is independent and strong herself. People will also want to read this magazine because of her very popular talk show, ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ The magazine has cover lines that may be very appealing to the female readers as it has things they may be concerned about or had to deal with themselves – this again draws readers in The colours used can portray a mood of glamour. The image and colours used for the magazine can straight away tell the audience if it’s a male or female magazine
The masthead of this magazine is reversed out and is very bold and stands out amongst the image – white against a black background. It is easier to read than the ‘Essence’ magazine as the colour is more contrasted. It is in a very stylish font and makes the magazine look very smart and sophisticated. This would appeal to people who are into fashion, style and glossy celebrities The main image is of an easily recognisable celebrity and everyone would know exactly who she is from first glance. Alike to ‘Essence’, it helps the magazine sell. It is in black and white which gives the magazine a more glossy and stylish look. It looks authentic and goes with the high end style of the magazine itself There is very little text on the front cover, which is very different from ‘Essence’ magazine and this may draw readers in as they are intrigued to find out what is in the magazine which would be a reason for purchase
The masthead of this magazine is ‘Q’ and it uses a very simple format with red and white. It is also used for the headlines and throughout the magazine. The red is very bold and strong against the background and attracts the reader’s attention immediately The image of the lead singer portrays a very destructive character. His clothing is dark which makes him seem less than innocent and gives an insight to what stories will be included in the magazine. The image would appeal to people who are interested in heavy rock music as it can stereotypically be portrayed as very destructive music, in many ways The main headline of this magazine which is ‘MUSE’ is very bold and contrasts against the background image of the magazine. It stands out and is the first thing the readers would be drawn to. Also, the subheadings below the main headline stand out much more on this side of the magazine than they do on the right side of the image as they seem to be much more eye catching with the alternate red and white colouring and the subheadings themselves are very wild and would appeal to their audience The front cover shows the lead singer of the band Muse acting in a disorderly way which ties in with the strap line and pull quote
The masthead of this magazine is in bright pink which contrasts against the image and the background. It is very bold and bright which attracts reader’s attention immediately. The same colour is used for the headlines too which keeps the same effect on the cover. This magazine would appeal to girls of any age as it is called ‘Glamour’ and it is very pink and bright. The headlines are displayed in very bright colours, the same as the masthead and as the image is mainly black and white, the headlines stand out completely. This magazine cover is very eye catching and the image is centred in the middle. It overlaps the masthead which makes it protrude amongst everything else on the front cover. The image is of an actress who plays a school girl in US hit comedy ‘Glee’. It portrays her in a completely different light to how everyone knows her and would attract reader’s attention, also because of the bold clothing and overall look she has been styled with
