Innovation by Collaboration Lars-Olof “ Lollo ” Allerhed Executive Evangelist IBM Collaboration Solutions [email_address] skills for a smarter planet
The world is about to get a whole lot smarter.
Something meaningful is happening… “ Every human being, company, organization, city, nation, natural system and man-made system is becoming interconnected, instrumented and intelligent. This is leading to new savings and efficiency—but perhaps as important, new possibilities for progress. ” The world is smaller. Because it can. Because it must. Because we want it to. The world is getting smarter. The world is flatter.
smarter planet Smarter is a vision of how the world works — how every person, business, organization, government, natural system, and man-made system interacts. Each interaction represents a chance to do something better , more efficiently, more productively. But more than that, as the systems of the planet become smart, we have a chance to open up meaningful new possibilities for progress.
+ + = An opportunity to think and act in new ways— economically, socially and technically.
For us to make sense of this new world, we must consider four critical questions Smart Work Green & Beyond New Intelligence How can we work smarter supported by flexible and dynamic processes modeled for the new way people buy, live & work? How can we take advantage of the wealth of information available in real time from a multitude of sources to make more intelligent choices? Dynamic Infrastructure How do we create an infrastructure that drives down cost, is intelligent and secure, and is just as dynamic as today ’ s business climate ? How do we drive greater efficiencies, compete more effectively, and respond more quickly by taking action now on energy, the environment, and sustainability? “ Data is exploding and it ’ s in silos ” I Need Insight “ New business & process demands ” I Need to Work Smart “ Our resources are limited ” I Need Efficiency “ My infrastructure is inflexible and costly ” I need to respond quickly

Editor's Notes

  1. Updates v16 includes correct smarter planet naming guideline corrections –non capitalization of smarter planet in a few sections
  2. The world is about to get a whole lot smarter.. What do we mean by that…? (link to or launch 1 or 2 of your favorite or most applicable smart planet IBM commercial) http://w3-03.ibm.com/marketing/advertising/tele/smarterplanet.html#3 Already have select mpg downloaded and ready to run.. I recommend the Smart Math, Smarter Way, Smarter Traffic, or smarter Grid most are 30 seconds in duration.. Bob
  3. We are all familiar with global integration and how the planet is becoming flatter And through interconnected communications and commerce, it ’s becoming smaller But something else is also going on. Something that may ultimately have a more profound affect on our society, businesses and individual lives…the planet is also becoming smarter. Our planet is becoming more intelligent, more instrumented, and more interconnected day by day. And with these changes come amazing opportunities for society as a whole and for every business, institution and individual. With so much technology and networking abundantly available, what wouldn't you put smart technology into? What service wouldn’t you provide ? What wouldn't you connect? What information wouldn't you mine for insight? The answer is, you – or your competitor – will do all of that. You will do it because you can. But the even more compelling reason we will all begin to transform our systems, operations, enterprises and personal lives to take advantage of a smarter world isn’t just because we can. It’s because we must .
  4. Smarter planet is a vision. Building a smarter planet is IBM's point of view on how interconnected technologies are changing the way the world literally works. That is, the systems and processes that enable: physical goods to be developed, manufactured, bought and sold; services to be delivered; everything from people and money to oil, water and electrons to move; and billions of people to work, govern themselves and live. IBM is starting a conversation with the world because we think now is the time to make these changes for the better. The convergence of these technological advancements are changing all the “things” that we interact with in our daily lives. Changing them from being analog and dumb into digital and smart. All of the appliances, devices and machines in our homes and offices; all of the systems that manage the flow of people, goods, services, energy and water; and the possessing of materials and manufacturing – all of these things are coming to life and becoming “smart”. They are becoming smart because they are “instrumented”, with the ability to sense their environments and monitor their performance. They are becoming smart because they are “interconnected”, using the internet, GPS, radio frequency tags and other means to communicate with other devices upstream and downstream from them. And these devices are also becoming “intelligent”. This one seems obvious but true intelligence is more than just embedding transistors into objects. It’s the ability of these things to begin to manage themselves, to make choices and self optimize, and in some cases to learn.
  5. As the world becomes instrumented, interconnected and intelligent, we have the opportunity to think and act in new ways—economically, socially and technically. Pre-condition of Change…
  6. As every human being, company, organization, city, nation, natural system, and man-made system is becoming interconnected, instrumented, and literally made more intelligent. In this new world, we believe there are 4 questions to be considered: How can we take advantage of the wealth of information available in real time from a multitude of sources to make more intelligent choices? – New Intelligence How can we work smarter supported by flexible and dynamic processes modeled for the new way people buy, live & work? – Smart Work How do we create an infrastructure that drives down cost, is intelligent and secure, and is just as dynamic as today ’s business climate ? – Dynamic Infrastructure How do we drive greater efficiencies, compete more effectively, and respond more quickly by taking action now on energy, the environment, and sustainability? -- Green & Beyond
  7. As Every human being, company, organization, city, nation, natural system, and man-made system is becoming interconnected, instrumented, and literally made more intelligent. In this new world, we believe there are 4 questions to be considered: How can we take advantage of the wealth of information available from our new smarter things to make more intelligent choices? – New Intelligence How can we empower people with smart processes and systems so that they can realize their full potential -- Smart Work How should business, government and other institutions adapt to the expectations of its new clients and the ever faster pace of change that it brings? - Dynamic Enterprise How do we align our goals and behaviors with our new responsibilities, so that caring for our planet and its people is no longer perceived as generosity or sacrifice? - Green & Beyond We hope we inspired you. We hope that you will share IBM ’s vision of a smart planet and become intrigued by how we are making clients think about how the world works. We hope that forward-thinkers will engage with us about the issues that matter most to them. And that ’s the entire point…. starting a conversation to build a smarter planet.
  8. Eight in 10 U.S. college students see a growing need for more IT professionals as technology advances More than 50 percent are seeking to improve their own technology skills before they graduate. Eight in 10 expect to encounter new technology that they will need to learn, adapt to and master once they enter the workforce. 60 percent surveyed -- part of the generation which has grown up with the Internet and social networking tools -- said personal use and experience have formed their technology skills, leading many to yearn for more formal training in this area. Three-quarters of college students are inspired by computers and technology and seven in 10 view technology as "the future." The U.S. government has made a call to action to modernize the nation's technology infrastructure. This includes digitizing healthcare records, adopting energy efficient practices and expanding broadband networks. As a result, companies will look to hire more software developers, IT consultants and managers who possess both the technology and business skills necessary to support these investments. The findings come at a time when nearly one million technology-related jobs are expected to emerge as a result of President Obama's $787 billion "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. “ http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/26893.wss Press room  >  Press releases  >  IBM and Marist Survey Shows U.S. College Students Want Technology Skills to Compete for Jobs     ARMONK, NY - 12 Mar 2009: Amid concerns that the economic downturn could impact their career plans, eight in 10 U.S. college students see a growing need for more IT professionals as technology advances, according to a survey by IBM (NYSE: IBM ) and the Marist Institute for Public Opinion. Business and Academia Responds The survey underscores IBM's ongoing efforts to help academia identify job market-critical skills, and then adapt and advance their curriculum to better prepare students for the workplace. Since 2004, IBM's Academic Initiative program has reached more than 2.5 million university students with software and hardware courses. IBM partners with more than 9,000 academics at 4,600 colleges and universities worldwide. Slide by B. Bry Academic Initiative For more information about the Survey contact Jennifer Clemente, IBM communications
  9. There are 4,270 faculty at 2,850 institutions teaching 8,223 courses, impacting 810K students Addressing the skills gap begins with Universities. The IBM Academic Initiative has a long history of working with academia: In the 1960s, Computer Science came into its own as a discipline through IBM ’ s involvement with universities. IBM ’s Academic Initiative is specifically focused on promoting skills around open standards-based software, together with new skills for the 21 st century. The benefits to academic institutions and students are many: Easy access to open standards-based technologies and supporting resources Ongoing staff development Increase in student placement Ensure that they have the most current, relevant curricula that map to the kinds of jobs that are expected, so schools can be attractive for enrollment, funding and growth AI is supported by a WW community of IBM volunteers: 2200+ volunteer IBM University Ambassadors On Demand Community of 41,000 IBMers, 5000 retirees We cannot do it alone. Only by teaming with academia, government agencies, and leaders in business can we solve this problem. That is why we are here today. Let ’s look at the agenda.
