American Imperialism in Comparative Perspective <ul><li>After conquering the vast area between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the American government looked toward the surrounding islands to conquer, annex, or purchase. </li></ul><ul><li>At the same time European countries moved to conquer parts of Africa and Asia. </li></ul><ul><li>By WWI Europeans and their descendents (now Americans) had established some sort of control of every part of the world over their respective indigenous peoples. </li></ul><ul><li>American ideology wants to make the conquered colonies into a self-governing society using the United States as a model. </li></ul><ul><li>European nations governed new territories from their homelands. </li></ul>

America’s Colonial Rule in the Philippines <ul><li>The United States fought 2 wars to acquire these islands in the Pacific. </li></ul><ul><li>We fought Spain before paying them $20 million for the territory and we fought the native islanders who didn’t want Spanish or American invaders. </li></ul><ul><li>Finally American governors won the hearts and minds of the Filipinos and the process of self-rule started in 1901. </li></ul><ul><li>The Philippine Islands were officially declared independent in 1946. </li></ul>
