The Great Transatlantic Migrations <ul><li>Europeans had established a pattern of migrating within their continent in search of new jobs. </li></ul><ul><li>Vast open territory acquired in small, affordable pieces and new freedoms made the US a desired destination. </li></ul><ul><li>Some Europeans who migrated to South America left after a few years and came to the US and Canada or returned to Europe. </li></ul>

The City in the Land of the Dollar <ul><li>The fastest growing city in the US in the late 19 th century was Chicago where the skyscraper was invented and steel frame construction was first used. </li></ul><ul><li>After the famous Chicago fire, the city was once again a blank slate to be rebuilt using these technologies. </li></ul><ul><li>With Chicago’s Columbian Exposition, a kind of world fair brought to the city in 1893, architects used neoclassic European design to “b e autify ” the city. </li></ul>
