• -American Empire through conquest, purchase, annexation, etc.
from Virgin Islands in Caribbean to Hawaii, Philippines in the Pacific.
• -Control by US also occured during phase of European imperialism
during which British took over parts of Africa and Asia (Southeast),
Germans took over South and East Africa (British took parts of
Northern and Southern Africa), French took over W. Africa and
Vietnam while taking "spheres of influence in China.
• -European states would eventually succeed in establishing control
over almost every part of the world by the eve of World War I.
• -Many believed there was no period of true American Imperialism.
• -American empire and other imperial growths were considered to
have significant differences to call for the word "imperialism" - it
had often been rooted in a sense of mission; American sense
differed from that of other nations, emphasizing other
characteristics.
