2. U.N. Definition of Sustainable
Development
In 1987, the UN Brundtland Commission
defined sustainable development as:
"meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs."
(Report of the World Commission on
Environment and Development.)
8. Problems Not Included in Traditional Circular
Economy Model: Scarcity and Externalities
9. Sustainability Paradigm Ikerd, 2012:
5 Key Principles:
• Principle 1: All materials
come from the environment
• Principle 2: Economic activity
involves the transformation of
natural materials
• Principle 3: The environment
is the final “sink” into which all
wastes go
• Principle 4: There is no
“away” (wastes can change
physical or chemical form, but
do not leave the environment)
• Principle 5: The environment
provides critical life-sustaining
services

go in search of clean water.
16. The Swomee Swans, with “smogulous smog” in their lungs, also fly for clearer skies.
17. The Bar-ba-loots are forced to leave town as there are no more Truffula fruits to eat.
18. "But now," says the Once-ler,
"Now that you're here,
the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
UNLESS someone like you
cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better.
It's not.
"SO...
Catch!" calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
"It's a Truffula Seed.
It's the last one of all!
You're in charge of the last of the Truffula
Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax and all of his friends may come
back.
20. Things don’t have
to go on this way.
We can reduce trash,
We can start right away.
Take your lunch in a bag,
but don’t throw it away.
Use the bag or a lunch box
again the next day.
Use both sides of your paper,
and I have no doubt
There will be much less paper
for you to throw out!
26. The Real Lorax?
We used a characterized camera19
to photograph every forward-facing image of two
Seussian creatures, the Lorax (n = 13) and the bipedal creature in The Foot Book (n =
13). We calculated the mean face of each creature19
and projected it into a space
containing the faces of every cercopithecine monkey in Kenya: the patas monkey;
the tantalus monkey (Chlorocebus tantalus); the red-tailed monkey (Cercopithecus
ascanius); the blue monkey (Cercopithecus mitis); and the De Brazza’s monkey
(Cercopithecus neglectus). We used eigenface decomposition methods to calculate
facial similarities19
and we generated the plot with t-distributed stochastic neighbor
embedding (t-SNE)26
, an iterative algorithm that down-projects multidimensional
