Prostaglandins are a group of fatty acids derived from membrane phospholipids that act as local hormones and mediate diverse physiological functions like inflammation. They are synthesized through the cyclooxygenase pathway from arachidonic acid to form prostaglandin H2, which is then converted to various prostaglandins like PGE2, PGF2α, PGI2, TXA2. Prostaglandins act through G-protein coupled receptors to exert effects like vasodilation, bronchoconstriction, uterine contraction, and inhibition of platelet aggregation. They are involved in reproductive processes and are used therapeutically for induction of labor, cervical ripening, abortion, treatment of peptic ulcers and pulmonary hypertension
