BACKGROUND PROFILE
I come from an old Yankee pioneer family and was raised just north of San Francisco, California as the 5th
generation from that great city. Excellent private schools and grades characterized an active childhood. Much
of my education took me away from home, so my college studies culminated at nearby Sonoma State University
in 1983. A deep appreciation of the natural beauty and fascinating history of the region sparked my interests as
a writer and tour guide.
As career preparation for a B.A. Degree in Business Management from Sonoma State University, my final
project was as the market researcher and Student Director for a trailblazing new course curriculum - which
today enjoys prestigious standing – Career Major in Wine Marketing as part of the Wine Business Institute.
This was launched through my helping to organize the University's Wine Marketing Seminars in 1982 and 1983
followed by advising curricula formation. All my detailed study indicated that the wine and tourism markets
held great promise, so I joined both industries (and with my future bride) in idyllic Sonoma Valley.
Looking to expand my skills beyond many years of marketing wines and gourmet products, I helped
formulate, finance, import and promote a unique proprietary liqueur and a portfolio of quality wines & spirits
from France. My Mission to educate the wine consumer led to an involvement with Seagrams Corporation´s
holdings in Napa Valley (Mumm Napa & Sterling Vineyards) in hospitality, special events, marketing and
participation in the establishment of the Seagrams Wine Service & Hospitality School for VIP clients. A desire
for a more intimate relation to the culinary arts brought me to a challenging position with the Napa Valley Wine
Train developing stellar events, cross-promotions and PR functions in addition to Wine Educator, Sommelier
and purchasing duties.
Although my Mission to fully participate in the magical confluence of food, drink, travel and culture found
creative expression in these stimulating endeavors, my curiosity revealed that opportunity also awaited in Europe
for my abilities. The impending arrival of a baby led to a move to my wife’s homeland of Sweden in 1993, where
I have been successful in opening a welcome market for my talents. Steady work in all areas of my interest has
activated further rewarding engagements involving my passion for travel, food and wine.
Throughout the 25-plus years since, every aspect of the wine, spirits and hospitality businesses have fully
exercised my abilities - including further extensions of my tour assignments to regional and international
destinations. As a professional Wine Educator and Tour Specialist, my experiences neatly coalesced to include
special events consulting and writing articles about wine, history and travel destinations for several tourist and
newspapers. Recently joined with an ultra-luxury tour company specializing in wine tours to Italy.
In addition to instructing innovative English classes at every level from grade school to university, my niche
has been leading specialized Hotel & Restaurant, Tourism, Food & Wine, Business and Marketing courses for
schools and local industries. This has escalated further to include numerous translation projects for tourism
authorities, companies and restaurants both as brochure and Internet material.
Wine interests have been fully active through opening a Wine Cellar / Dining Lounge facility, writing a
monthly wine column for a regional newspaper and consulting for restaurants and hotels. Further involvements
include as Wine Columnist / Advertising Director / Translator for an upscale nationally distributed travel &
lifestyle publication & website in Sweden, Business Travel Magazine. Most recent accomplishments include
assisting in the start up and importation of a diverse portfolio of wines and gourmet products from Italy for a wine
distributor – and parallel endeavors launching an exhibition from Pompeii for the dynamic Sweden Hotel chain.
As a member of several wine societies, I have fashioned a wine tasting lecture series and traveled extensively
throughout southern Sweden. Relationships culled from these contacts have resulted in leading my first wine tour
to visit my former playground in California and plans are underway for Italian gastronomy tours.
Pressing the initiative to combine my multi-faceted interests into an enterprising global career has led to many
rewarding and adventuresome challenges.
