Earth's Structure

  1. 1. The Layers of the EarthMining Matters II N The Earth’s CrustCentre of the earth — The centre of the earth isapproximately 6400 km below the surface.Inner Core — A mass of iron with atemperature of 3870°C. Normally ironwould melt at this temperature, butimmense pressure on it keeps it solid. It is 2400 km in diameter.Outer Core — A mass of molteniron about 2200 km thick thatsurrounds the solid inner core.Mantle — A rock layer about~2850 km thick that reaches about ~half the distance to the centre of theearth. Parts of this layer become hotenough to liquify and become slowmoving molten rock or magma.Crust — A layer of sand and rockvarying from 5 to 50 km thick.
