French and Indian War
1. Bell Ringer
Based on what we have learned, do you feel like the
British and the French would be enemies or allies
during the 1700’s? Defend your answer with
EVIDENCE from previous lessons. Answer in a short
paragraph on your note sheet.
2.
3. Causes of the War
Cause of the War Memory Cue
Both the British and the French are
competing over the Ohio River Valley
Both sides used Native American claims
to the land. The British used the Iroquois
Confederacy and the French used the
Huron.
The British colonists feared control by
the Pope in America. French territory
controlled by the French and the Roman
Catholic church.
4. Ohio River Valley
Land west of the Appalachians
Rich in resources
The British viewed it as theirs
French had a thriving fur trade
there
Neither side wanted to do
business with the other
Forts were created to protect
both sides
French- Fort Duquesne
British- Fort Necessity
6. A young Virginia militia
leader…
In the Spring of 1754, the
governor of VA sent a militia
to drive out the French
A young Virginian became
the leader and driving force
of the militia
His name, George
Washington
Lost the Battle of Fort
Necessity but proved his
potential as a leader
7. Make a Prediction
How would America be different if George
Washington had never decided to join the Virginia
militia?
Take 5 minutes and discuss this someone who is
born in the same season (Winter, Spring, Summer,
Fall) as you.
8. Native American Alliances
Both sides were seeking
alliances
The French were more
interested in fur trade while
the British were more
interested in land
Which side would be more
appealing to you if you were
a Native American? Why?
The Iroquios initially
claimed neutrality, but
would end up siding with
the British
10. Albany Plan of Union
Delegates from all of the colonies
met in Albany, NY to discuss
strategy against the French
They tried to implement Ben
Franklin’s plan, The Albany Plan of
Union, for a united colonial
government
To form a colonial government,
each colony would have to give up
some power and none was willing
to do so
Why would the colonists’
unwillingness to surrender power
be significant in connection to
events a few years later?
11. Quick Check!
Why did the French have more Native American
allies?
Which confederacy did the British form an alliance
with?
Who created the Albany Plan of Union?
Why wasn’t the Albany Plan of Union accepted?
12. Edward Braddock
War was OFFICIALLY declared
in 1755 but several battles
occurred before this
General Edward Braddock tried
to use European war tactics
(soldiers lining up in open fields)
against the French and Native
Americans
Do you agree or disagree with
this decision?
Washington warned against this
strategy but Braddock didn’t
listen
1,000 soldiers and Braddock
himself were eventually killed
13. William Pitt
War was declared on
both sides in 1756
William Pitt was
appointed by the king to
be the Secretary of War
Because of his
leadership and military
skill, things started to
turn around for the
British
14. Quick Check!
Which British general refused to listen to
Washington’s advice?
Which British Secretary of War turned things around
for the British?
15. The Battle of Quebec
General James Wolfe was given
the difficult task of taking Quebec,
the capital of New France
Analyze the map. Why would the
British want to take Quebec?
Quebec was a walled city built on
steep cliffs (Who has the
advantage?)
Quebec resisted the siege for
several months
Wolfe was finally able to lead his
men to the Plains of Abraham, just
outside the city.
Wolfe would take Quebec, ending
16. The Treaty of Paris (1763)
Some fighting continued until 1760, when the British won
Montreal
The Treaty of Paris (1763) finally ended the war
Spain was involved in the peace talks (Why???)
Britain had declared war on Spain as well in 1762
Britain controlled New France, the Ohio Valley, and all
French lands east of the Mississippi River (New Orleans
was an exception)
18. Results of the French and
Indian War
France lost most of its colonies in the New World
British territory doubled in size
Great Britain tried to make the colonies pay for the
war debt and to support the new territory
19. Bell Ringer (do this on a separate sheet of
paper!)
Twitter Post- In 140
characters or less,
describe the cause,
major battles/events,
and result of the French
and Indian War.
20. Extension Activity- Fort
Loudoun Infographic
Work with your partner to
research the significance of
Fort Loudoun.
Individually- Create an
infographic detailing Fort
Loudoun's significance
during the French and
Indian War
An infographic is essentially
a mini-poster that uses
BOTH graphics and
information
22. Your infographic should
include the following:
Why was Fort Loudoun built?
Where was it located?
What role did the Cherokee play in the fort?
Describe/illustrate how their relationship with the British
changed.
Describe/illustrate what happened after the Cherokee
and the British relationship deteriorated.
(make notes of these items as you do your research)
26. Quick Check!
What happened after the relationship between the
British and the Cherokee deteriorated?
27. Summarizer (do this on the same sheet of
paper as your bell ringer)
Exit Slip- In one sentence, describe what happened
at Fort Loudoun
Editor's Notes
What reasons did the British have for colonizing America? (call on volunteer)
The French? (volunteer)
Call on random student to share paragraph
Reward effort and correct answers
Break standard down into three pieces: cause, course, outcome
Treat it like a checklist
Cause 1: What can you infer about the Ohio River Valley? (volunteer)
- British were offering land grants of wilderness in the area
Cause 2: Why would each side be seeking Native American help? (non-volunteer)
Cause 3: Do you see a connection w/ an earlier standard/lesson? (volunteer)
Choose random student for memory cue 1, boy for 2, girl for 3
What kind of resources would be the most desirable? (volunteer)
Review: What resources were the French interested in? (Trade, Fish, Fur)
- Call on 3 students: high, low, middle
- On a scale of 1-4, one being "completely lost," how well do you understand the causes of the war?
What can you infer about his uniform? (volunteer)
After introducing GW: What irony is there w/ his uniform?
Built Fort Necessity: What inferences can be made about this name? (it was built quickly and out of necessity)
Call on one boy and one girl to share
- We would have lost the Revolution
- GW defined the presidency
- GW supported adding the Bill of Rights
Which side would be more appealing? (call on random student)
Call on volunteer who disagrees (dissenting opinion)
Iroquois Confederacy: 6 tribes, French allied with the Algonquins (Powhatan), they were more enemies to the French than friends with the British
Notice the letters, what do they mean?
Call on volunteer- What evidence do you have?
Reveal the purpose behind the image
Is it effective? On a scale of 1-4, how effective was Ben Franklin at convincing the colonists to unite?
Discuss last question with someone sitting next to you= 1 minute
