What is it?
 Tides are essentially bulges in the sea surface
 The rise and fall if water level constitutes the tide
 Rotation of the earth brings any point on the surface through the
increasing and decreasing gravitational pull of the moon and sun
 Most predictable occurrence on this planet
How is it happening?
 Tides are on the shores of the world oceans, almost everywhere, sea
level fluctuates regularly.
 The gravitational attraction between the moon and earth, and
between the sun and earth cause tides.
 The moon, which is 239,000 miles away from the earth, produces a
greater percentage of earth’s tides than the sun does. The sun is
further away at 93,000,000 miles from the earth. Moon tides (lunar
tides) are twice as strong as sun tides (solar tides).
 In most parts of all the oceanic coastlines, there are normally two (2)
flood tides (high tides) and two (2) ebb tides (low tides) about every
25 hours

Life on Earth
 Tides and currents carry nutrients, moderate temperatures, and
influence conditions in numerous ecosystems
 Coastal cities have to build their buildings that are on the coast to
certain codes and far enough away so the tides and waves don’t
crash into the buildings and ruin the structures
 Tidal Power

 Like Wind Turbines
 Limited places the could be of
use

Tidal Power
Tidal Power
Pros Cons
 Renewable energy
 Requires no fuel
 Could last 100 years
 High efficiency
 Environmental impact locally not
globally
 Storm surge barrier
 Damage to the local aquatic
environment
 No fish migration to selected area
 Restrict access to open waters
 Capture dirt, waste, pollution
 Reduce kinetic energy
 Impact the local birds
Problems?
Solutions?
 Scientists are currently developing things that would help solve the
problem, or at least give everyone a warning that they are going to
be coming to shore to prevent people from eating the contaminated
food
