Unit13 – Planningand Pitchinga Printbased MediaProduct - Proposal
Format:
I am goingto create a magazine frontcoveranddouble page spread(DPS). Iwill make myfront
coverin PhotoshopandmyDPS inInDesign.
WorkingTitle:
My workingtitle is Lyrical. The fontstyle of Lyrical isveryeasytoread as it isinboldand the
lettersare quite separated. The colourof the mastheadwill be apink/redcolour,howeverthisis
subjecttochange as I am notsure how itwill lookona blue background, itcouldeitherbe an
easyread or challenging. The masthead will be placed downthe lefthandside of the frontcover.
Lyrical connotes thatsomethingisfull of emotion.A name likethiswouldmake the audience
wantto read to magazine, astheywouldwanttorelate to the emotion. Italsocouldconnote to
the readerthat my magazine isall aboutthe music.
Genre:
The sub-genre of mymagazine is pop-rock,basedoff of mymagazinesof inspiration,Billboard
and Q. It will be aimedatbothmales andfemales ages16-23.
Content:
My magazine ‘Lyrical’ magazinewillbe full of pictures, articles, interviews, reviewsand
the up to date newswithinthe pop-rockworld.The publicationwill mainlyfeature bands
and artistswhoare quite popular;howeverthere will alsobe some upcomingstars
featured.Iwoulduse ‘starappeal’(RichardDyer) toattract readers,thismeans featuring
artistssuch as Pink,JustinBieber,EdsheeranandBeyoncé onmyfrontcovers.
Style or Approach:
The denotationof the colourscheme forthe magazine frontcoverwill be excitingyetsimple. It
will showthatmymagazine isworththe read and that readerswill notbe disappointed.
The colour crimsonwaschosenfor the masthead because Iplanonhavinga blue backgroundand
a crimsoncolourwouldstandout and almostpopfromthe page. The colourcrimsonconnotes
nobility,highsocial status androyalty.Thisconnotestothe readerthatthe artistsfeaturedinmy
magazine are one of/all of these thingsandthatpeople aspire tobe them, therefore making
readerswantto read aboutthem.Crimsonalsoconnoteslove,thisconnotingtoaudiences that
theywill love mymagazine.
I am goingto use Adobe Photoshop CS5to constructthe magazine pages(FrontCoverandDPS)
because itisone of the besteditingsoftware’sforprojectslike thiswhere youcaninsertandedit
imageswhile alsoadding texttocreate a professional looktomymagazine.
Some of the toolsin Adobe Photoshop CS5thatwill be particularlybeneficialinconstructing the
frontcover will be the ‘quickselectiontool’asitgivesyouthe abilitytocrop the backgroundout
of the image toenable adifferentbackgroundtobe placed. The ‘magicwandtool’ where youcan
cut out the areas thatare not needed, forexample white areasonsocial medialogos. Finallythe
‘rulertool’whichisusedtokeepyourworkneat andtidy.It givesitmore a professional lookas
everythingwill be straightandin-line.
Unit13 – Planningand Pitchinga Printbased MediaProduct - Proposal
Audience:
The audience isa mix of both female andmale withthe agesbetween16-23.I thinkthisisa good
audience totargetas most of the followersof pop-rockartistsfall withinthisage category. They
will alsobe withinthe socio-economicclassesof B-Castheyneedtohave extramoneytobuy the
magazine while alsohavingspare time toreadand acknowledgethe contentof the magazine.I
will aimtohave a mix inethnicity, aswithinthe pop-rockindustrythere isalsoamix of ethnicity
that has a mixedfollowingbase. The stereotypical personwhowouldbuyandreadmy magazine
wouldbe a personwhoisquite trendyandkeepsupwithmostthingsthat are happeningaround
them. Theywouldalsokeepupto date withall the latestfashionandtechnologywhile shopping
inshopssuch as Topshop,Pink(Victoriasecret)andRiverIsland.
Length:
I intendtohave my magazine A4size (approx.8”x11”) and around 32 pages,includingthe front
and back cover. It wouldbe thislengthasbeingpublishedmonthlytherewouldbe quitealotof
contentto be in it,I wouldwantmymagazine tolookprofessional andnotcrampedintoa 16
page magazine,thereforeIwouldspreadeverythingoutresultinginmore pages.
Frequency:
I will produce mymagazine monthly, asthiswill give me the chance togatherall the recent
relevantinformationandmake mymagazine worthreading. If Iwasto produce itweeklyor
fortnightly, itwouldnothave the contentIwouldlike andpeople wouldnotbe as interestedasI
would have hopedthemtobe. The price of my magazine will be £3.50 as thisis whatQ and
Billboardbothcharge fortheirmagazines, thiswill meanIwill have competitionandthe audience
may thinkmymagazine isas goodas Q and BillboardsseeingasIam charging the same price for
them.
