Linguists do not think of any accent as being 'good' or 'bad' . They are all different,
but equally valid. It is perfectly normal, however, for people to identify their favorite
accents. Britch. is perhaps the most dialect-obsessed country in the world. there are many
accents such as Geordie accent. Estuary English (Southeast British), West Country
(Southwest British), Midlands English, Northern England English, Welsh English, Scottish
English, and Received Pronunciation. I am going to discuss the differences and similarities
between Received Pronunciation and Geordie from phonetics perspective.
Received Pronunciation (a term by 19th Century linguist A.J. Ellis1) is a way of
pronouncing British English that is often used as a standard in the Teaching of English as a
Foreign Language. The abbreviation RP is also used.. "Received Pronunciation is only
around 200 years old," (David Crystal 2007). According to Tom McArthur, "RP has always
been a minority accent, unlikely ever to have been spoken by more than 3-4% of the British
population" (The Oxford Companion to the English Language, 1992). There are some
features of this accent.one of them is the /r/ sound at the ends of words is not pronounced
for example, father will pronounced like /ˈfɑːðə/ without the /r/ sound. This feature called
Non-rhoticity. The second feature called Trap-bath split. It means that certain a words, like
bath/bɑːθ/, and dance /dɑːns/ are pronounced with the broad-a like in father/ˈfɑːðə/, in
which these words are pronounced with the short-a in cat /kæt/. Also, RP speakers do not
drop the letter ‘h’ at the beginning of words, but it is common in many other varieties of
English. Another feature of Received Pronunciation is that words such as due,

/dju:/ stupid/ˈstju:pɪd/,, Tuesday/ˈtju:zdeɪ/, and enthusiasm /ɪnˈθjuːziæzəm are
pronounced with a /j/ sound, /. Many other accents, including American English, have lost
this sound in a process known as ‘yod-dropping’: /ˈstu:pɪd/, /du:/,and are /ɪnˈθuːziæzəm/
etc. However, not all words will be like this; cute /kjuːt/, fuse /fjuːz/ and music /ˈmjuːzɪk/
are pronounced with the /j/ sound by RP speakers and others the same .
Moreover , Geordie is one of the oldest and best loved of Britain's dialects. But modern
times mean that some Geordie words are dying or changing how they speak. It refers both
to a native of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and to the speech of the inhabitants of that city. no one
know the exact origins of the term Geordie, but all agree that it derives from the local pet
name for George. Also it has some features that made it especial from others accents. The
first one is that some sounds pronounced in different ways. It means /aʊ/ is a diphthong
(diphthongs are the sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable) as
in out /aʊt/ , but in Geordie accent it will become a vowel / u: /. For more explanation.
Word about /əˈbaʊt/ will become /əˈbu: t/. the second feature is called the foot-strut
merger. It means that the nuclear in foot /fʊt/ and could /kʊd/ is pronounced with the
same nuclear as strut /strʌt/ and fudge /fʌdʒ/.In addition, there is a second feature that
focus in diphthong sound. The /ai/ sound in kite /kaɪt/ will be /keɪt/ , so it sounds a bit
more like American or Standard British” Received Pronunciation” . Also, “Words such as
work and firm come out as ‘wawk’ and ‘fawm’, which is a major source of confusion for

speakers of other accents. ‘Mike can’t work’ is likely to be interpreted by an outsider as
‘Mike can’t walk’.”
However, there is a common feature between Received Pronunciation and Geordie. For
instance, in both accents almost there is” non-rhoticity”. Although, it is common in cities in
Geordie.
Finally, different accents does not mean they are totally different. There are some
similarities and difference too. Received Pronunciation and Geordie are two English accent.
The most common process between both is ” non-rhoticity”. Although , the Geordie accent
is about the most difficult dialect to copy in the country . it is all to do with diphthongs.
There are two diphthongs will preannounced differently. There are/aʊ/ and /ai/. For
instance, about /əˈbaʊt/ will become /əˈbu: t/, and the diphthong / aɪ /as in die /daɪ/ will
be /deɪ/. Also, the nuclear in book /bʊk/ is pronounced with the same nuclear as strut
/strʌt/. However, Received Pronunciation is an accent of spoken English. the most well-
known feature is that “ Trap-bath split” when we pronounced path with /ɑː/ sound /bɑːθ/
as in /ˈfɑːðə/.. Another feature is that words such as news/nju:z/ is pronounced with a /j/
sound.
