• Introduction:-
• Identify the major similarities and differences in
the use of nature in the poetry of “William
Wordsworth” and “Robert Frost”.
• Nature has always been a source of motivation
for poets through out history even during the
Greek and Roman empires .
• “William Wordsworth” and “Robert Frost” as a
Nature poet.
“William Wordsworth”
• He was a Romantic poet
• Samuel Taylor Coleridge,
helped to launch the Romantic
Age in English literature with
the 1798 joint publication
Lyrical Ballads.
• He was Britain’s Poet
Laureate, a poet officially
appointed by a government to
compose poems for state
occasions, for seven years.
• He died on April 23, 1850.
“Robert Frost”
• Robert Frost was the leading
modern American poet of
nature and rural life.
• Most of his poems are upon
natural element.
• He was very interested in
natural things; he found in
common place.
• Many of his poems have a New
England setting and deal with
the theme of man's relationship
with nature.
What is the poet ?
From the preface to Lyrical Ballads .
“ What is a poet ?
He is a men speaking to men: a man endued with more
lively sensibility who has a greater knowledge of human
nature, and a more comprehensive soul, then are
supposed to be common among mankind ”
Characteristic of Nature Poet?
• Portrayed every aspect of nature
• Presented nature as it is, with truthfulness
• With insight, describing hidden
• meaning in nature (not surface description )
• Sense of spirit – life in nature. Nature as
teacher.
Both poet’s View on Nature
• Wordsworth viewed
nature as something that
is related to the Loved
and Enjoyed.
• Ex:-
- Lines Written in Early
Spring
- Daffodils
• Frost viewed nature as
something that is related
to the Holey and Divine.
• Ex:-
-Fire and Ice
-Stopping by the
Woods on a Snowy
Evening.
• Nature used as a tool to
unmask the darkest
depths of human
disposition - Uses analogy
between elements of
nature and stark reality of
the human condition.
• Nature used as a tool to
unmask the darkest depths of
human disposition nature is
placed on a pedestal and its
purity is employed to reflect
the dark nature of humans.
• Nature is a source of escape
for humans from their dark
feelings. possesses the ability
to heal those feelings .
• Humans are doomed
to their fate and
cannot escape the
suffering.
Conclusion:-
• In the poems of “William Wordsworth” and
“Robert Frost” there are lots of natural elements
in their poems. It is right to say that the theme of
these two poets is Nature. They have written all
their poems based on nature where nature plays
a great role in their works. They are always
influenced by the nature to write the poem.
Anything that they encounter in their life they
write it down in the form of poems or sonnets.
So the right theme of their poetry is nature. And
both are Nature poet.
