3. 18th century known as ‘Augustan Age’, ‘Neo-Classical’, ‘the
age of reason and prose’, ‘the age of Johnson’.
Classical Emperor ‘Augustus Caesar’.
The age of Augustus was the golden age of Roman. The writer
of 18th century imitated the literary forms and themes of the
original Augustan writer such as Virgil Horace.
Enlightenment, such as Voltair and Roussen were popular the
idea of reason. Bacon, Locke, Hobbes were important
precursors of Enlightenment. Enlightenment movement
advocated scientific rationalism and empirical knowledge.
4. According to John Rahn, “The Enlightenment was, at
centre, a celebration of idea. Idea about what the
human mind was capable of and what could be
achieved through deliberate action and scientific
methodology. Many of the new, enlightened idea were
political in nature. Intellectuals began to consider the
possibility that freedom and democracy were the
fundamental Rights of all people, not bestowed upon
them by beneficent monarch’s on Pope.”
5. Neo – Classical writer believe that Man was an imperfect
being whose potential was limited, and he looked back to
the ideals and arts forms of classical time.
Victorian Wab : “They replaced the renaissance emphasis
on the imagination, 0n invention, experimentation, on
mysticism with an emphasis on order and reason, on
restraint, on common sense and on religious, political,
economical and philophical conversation. They
maintained that man himself was the most appropriate
Subject of art and saw art itself as essentially pragmatic as
valuable because it was somehow useful and as something
, which was properly intellectual rather than emotional.
6. 18th Century, there were two opposite parties Whigs
and Tories.
Whigs and Tories came from Britain.
Britain as a isolationism to internationalism.
This parties start of the Industrial Revolution.
Agriculture became market – oriented.
7. This was an age of new prose forms such as Criminal
Biographies, Travelogues, Political allegories and
Romantic tale.

The Restoration Era, August Era and Age of Johnson
Tried to imitate the style of Roman and Greek.
This era also enlightenment, which emphasized logic
and reason.
The Neo – Classical period ended in 1778, When
William Wordsworth published his Notable work The
‘Lyrical Ballads’.
