Color Unity: The Limited Palette
1. Color Unity: The Limited Palette de Beaufort
This project explores the concept of “Color Unity”. In order to produce color unity, the artist must use a consistent approach (hue
relationship) from work to work, and also limit their palette to a selected group of hues within each work.
For this work we will be using “near complements” which are pairs of hues that are just to the left or the right of the real complement
on the color wheel. These pairings produce interesting “overtones” and do not cancel each other out as much when mixed together.
1. First select two “near complements” and set them out on your palette.
2. Create a range of colors by
a. tinting each hue directly
b. mixing the hues directly with each-other
c. tinting the resulting mixture of b
3. Each time you create a new color apply it evenly on a sheet of 9”x9” paper. Make sure your paint does not have too much water,
and the application is smooth.
4. After you have created a sufficient amount of 9x9 colored paper (at least 10) repeat the process with a different pair of near
complements.
2. 5. Design an abstract design or copy an existing image using tracing paper.
6. With an exacto-blade cutout identical shapes from each of your near-complement pairs.
7. Glue these down with rubber cement in an identical arrangement so that you produce the same composition with a different
combination of colors.
Please use one 16x10 canvas, or two smaller canvases at least 8x10.
Student Learning Objectives:
Students will understand and implement the concept of “color unity”
Students will understand and implement “near complements” and the full tonal range that is created from a “limited
palette”
Grading Rubric:
CONCEPT (40 pts) : You have used near complements to create a limited palette in an individual work- achieving
color unity. Further, your second work also has color unity, both internally and in relationship to the first.
PROFESSIONALISM (40 pts): Your paper is evenly coated. Your paper is cut carefully and applied with a minimum
of messiness. The two components closely resemble each other.
ORIGINALITY (20 pts): Your design is creative and original.
