This document provides instructions for a Zentangle art project that tests knowledge of color schemes. Students will create a single Zentangle design, duplicate it 5 times, and apply a different color scheme to each using colored pencils. The 5 color schemes are: monochromatic, complementary, split complementary, analogous, and triadic. Students will define each color scheme on the back of its page and include a printed image of a famous work of art using that scheme.

Zentangle Colors
WHAT IS A ZENTANGLE? Miniature pieces of unplanned,
abstract art created in a very structured method from a series of
repetitive patterns on a square paper tile. The process is a form of
“artistic meditation” as one becomes completely engrossed in
making each pattern, deliberately focusing on “one stroke at a
time”. The creativity options and pattern combinations are
boundless. And anyone can do it successfully!
TASK: This project will test your knowledge and application of
the color wheel and five main color schemes. Specifically, you
will be creating a single Zentangle, duplicating the design 5 times
on 5 pieces of paper, then adding a specific color scheme using colored pencils to each.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
1.Learn and review the five main color schemes used in art.
2.Learn about Zentangles and how to create them.
3.In your sketchbook, create 4 different Zentangle patterns. When complete, choose your best design.
4.Using tracing paper, a light box, or the window, transfer your final design to five different sheets of
square drawing paper. When done you will have 5 identical designs on 5 different pieces of paper.
5.Using colored pencils, you will add color to each design using a specific color scheme:
a) Monochromatic Color Scheme using one color of your choice.
b) Complementary Color Scheme using two complementary colors of your choice.
c) Split Complementary Color Scheme using a color of your choice and the two colors adjacent
to its complementary.
d) Analogous Color Scheme using your choice of three colors that are adjacent to each other on
the color wheel.
e) Triadic Color Scheme using three colors of your choice that are equally spaced on the color
wheel.
6. Once all 5 designs are complete with color, you will define each color scheme on the back of the
corresponding page.
7.Finally, you willfind and print in color a famous work of art that uses each color scheme. The printed
image will be glued to the back of the corresponding page. Be sure to include the title of the work, the
artist’s name, the year it was created and the medium they used to create it.
