Scale, Repetition, Direction, Emphasis
Directions:
1. Chose a color scheme for your project, taking into account color interactions with regards to
simultaneous contrast, tonal value, and mood. Paint your illustration board with one of the two
colors using the large brush I will supply in class. Let dry. Use even strokes and make the
tone as flat and smooth as possible.
2. Chose a shape, and then create 4 versions of that shape of different sizes. Cut out “stencil”
originals to re-produce these shapes using a heavy paper or light cardboard. Trace the
shapes on the colored paper that you have chosen, and then cut out the shapes from the
paper. You can use any shape that you like.
3. Keeping in mind directional force, emphasis, and focal point, create a composition with the
paper shapes. You may try a few ideas before you settle on a final. Try to utilize directional
force and focal points and create a unified composition with interesting visual order.
4. Glue the shapes down with rubber cement. Do not over apply.

Student Learning Objectives:
1. Color: Students will chose two colors specifically for their interaction. Simultaneous contrast
and tonal hue will be considered. Students will demonstrate mastery over color interaction and
theory.
2. Design: Students demonstrate a knowledge of scale, repetition, directional force, focal point,
and emphasis. Unity is achieved through careful planning and execution of ideas with regards to
composition. The design will demonstrate a knowledge of balance.
Grading Rubric:
CONCEPT/DESIGN (40 pts) : The project makes use of scale, repetition, direction, and focal
point. Color is used with intent and as an organizing principle. Negative/positive space is utilized
in an interesting way. There is variety but also harmony/unity.
CRAFT/PROFESSIONALISM (40pts): The project is neat and precise, there are no
blemishes, scratches or scuffs that distract the viewer. All the elements are glued securely and
there are none missing. There are no glue spills.
CREATIVITY/ORIGINALITY (20pts) Are the designs innovative and original, or simply rote
copies of the examples given? Have you chosen an interesting shape to repeat, and is your
composition unique?
