Basic care for all humans involves nutrition, hydration, shelter, and human interaction. We have a moral obligation to provide this basic care. Medically assisted nutrition and hydration may be indicated when a person cannot swallow safely or receive nutrition/hydration orally or through enteral means like a feeding tube. There are different types of feeding tubes that can provide enteral or parenteral nutrition, either partially or totally. The basic principle for medically provided nutrition and hydration is that it can be refused or withdrawn when it no longer benefits the patient or imposes an excessive burden. Terry Schiavo's case was highly debated, as her condition may have meant she could no longer benefit from her feeding tube.
