This week students are exploring the concept of privilege in different aspects of life. Having privilege means having some form of power through access to goods, services, education, or other resources. Those with privilege may not be aware of how they benefit from it. The document instructs students to complete a chart about their membership in dominant or subordinate groups, and to write a response addressing how privilege has shaped their life opportunities and experiences. They are asked to consider forms of privilege like race, socioeconomic status, and education.

This week you are exploring what it means to have privilege in all aspects of life, whether it be that
you are able to enroll in school and take this course, or that you are able to walk, type, see, taste, or
purchase/have access to groceries. Having privilege also means that you have power of some sort.
Even having access to goods and services can be seen as a privilege. Discrimination can accompany
power and privilege as those who have power and privilege may not be consciously aware of how
they benefit from it.
Instructions:
First, Chapter 4 of The Ecology of Diversity (Kahn, 2015) has a “Reflections on Diversity” section near
the end entitled, “Membership in Dominant and Subordinate Groups.” Follow the instructions
provided in the chapter and complete the chart considering who are you are and what relationships
you have with each type of group.
Second, write at least three paragraphs (300 words) addressing the following questions:
1) How has privilege, in any/all forms, shaped your life? Consider race, socioeconomic status,
education, and other associations identified in Week 1.
2) Have you been aware of the privileges in your life as you were growing up? Why or why not?
3) As you learn more about privilege, and as you examine your life, what do you find most
interesting or surprising?
4) How has privilege shaped your life opportunities, life chances, experiences, etc.?

CLASSMATE’S DISCUSSION 1
Privilege has had a large impact on my life. Growing up I knew that my family struggled a
lot. My parents divorced when I was in elementary school. My mom was a single parent
to four small children. I did not realize the impact that this would have on my life. I have
realized the importance of working hard and having a positive outlook on life. My mom
struggled to put food on the table, but we never would have known. She tried to give us
everything that we wanted. We attended a public school in a small town and lived in a
three-bedroom house that my mom owned. We did rely on government assistance.
Growing up, I was not aware of my privilege in life. Even though we struggled, we always
managed and had a place to call our own. In community college, I participated in a
privilege walk. “At the end of the exercise, participants are asked to look around the
room and take note of the unequal degrees of privilege they possess.” (Morton, 2022).
This exercise made me realize the place that I stood when it comes to privilege. Some of
the privileges that individuals and do not have come from structural inequities within
society. (Kahn, 2015, Chapter 4.1).
After examining more about my adult life, I have found some interesting findings about
privilege. Because my husband is in the Navy, I have found that educational experience
can play an important role in life. The officers are treated better tha.

The unit also asks you to think about those agents of socialization most closely related to various aspects of culture. For this assignment, you are asked to think about the same issues as they apply to another culture. Choose a culture you know nothing about. Go online to research this group and answer the following questions about their culture and socialization. 1. In a paragraph, introduce the cultural group you researched online. Be sure to give the location of the group, why you chose the group, and what you hope to learn. 2. In one to two paragraphs, describe three interesting aspects about this culture. Choose something about their everyday life (folkway), something about their religion (value), and something about their biggest taboo (more). 3. Discuss the agents of socialization involved in the transmission of the three interesting aspects you chose. 4. Finally, how does each of these aspects affect the development of self for members of the group? Be sure to think and write sociologically, using correct terminology and being objective. Cultural diversity in the workforce involves multilingual colleagues, gender, religion, age, ethnicity, etc. but the lesson plan that I would like to write about is involving colleagues that are multilingual. In today’s society and in our country; speaking more than one language is a great privilege, benefit, and provides many opportunities. It is estimated that over 50 million people speak Spanish either as their primary language or secondary here in the United States of America. As a changing demographic and workforce; it’s of importance to be culturally aware and culturally competent as nurses in our skills, abilities, and experiences. To start our lesson, I’d like to gather employees together and encourage to speak about is common and unique in their culture and welcome different ideas and viewpoints. Next, id like everyone to share a story of either of a time of how they felt respected (of their culture) or the opposite; a time they can share with us of a misjudgment, disrespectful, or treated inferiorly. After these questions and stories are shared; I would like to encourage them to use this a learning experience of each other and how to be mindful and apply this out in the real world. Whether one needs to dissect and identify and prejudice or concerns them have about themselves or how we can all improve and be better individuals by being more aware and cognizant of our surrounding, diversity, and be culturally competent nurses. Common potentials of barriers to learning are getting out of your comfort zone and possibly a negative past experience (that can be hard to overcome). ‘Feedback must be specific, not general. [Adults] must also see a reward for learning … [They] must be interested in the subject [matter]. Interest is directly related to reward. Adults must see the benefit of learning in order to motivate themselves to learn’ (Galbraith 1990: 25). (Falasca, 2011). To overcome barriers; the one leading the group must first assess and communicate effectively what these potential barriers are for each individual. Expecting these potential barriers is important step to move through them and be successful in the goal of the diversity topic of discussion and learning. To assess be see if learning took place and how well this group learning discussion was and how effective it was is to evaluate and have return feedback; either verbally or written down privately. Assignment 3: Views on Diversity
Pablo believes that diversity is the most important issue in our culture, and that it is greatly underemphasized. On the other hand, Ralph rarely thinks of diversity, except when it is mentioned in the workplace. Monica is sensitized to multicultural issues because her parents are immigrants who still struggle with discrimination after being here for 20 years.
To obtain a cross-section of what people think about diversity, conduct five-minute interviews with three individuals you don't know well, and assess their views on diversity. You have been provided an
Informed Consent
document for the respondents to sign along with verbally consenting to participate in this assignment. This is to enable that the respondents demonstrate a clear understanding of the meaning and purpose of this assignment. While you are expected to use the informed consent form in keeping with ethical practices for data collection, you do not need to submit it to the instructor as part of the assignment.
Ask the respondents the following questions and record their answers:
When you hear the word diversity mentioned in the workplace, in the media, or in casual conversation, what meaning do you assign this term?
Does a particular race, ethnic group, or other minority group come to mind when you think of diversity? Does one of these groups pertain to you?
Do you think the majority of people in our culture:
Respect cultural differences among groups of people.
Show indifference to cultural differences.
Lack respect for cultural differences. Explain each choice.
If you were to make a suggestion about how our culture should handle diversity over the next decade, what would it be?
Compile your responses and write a brief reflection paper (two pages) on your findings. Specifically address the following issues:
What did you discover was the general attitude toward diversity in our culture?
Is diversity more associated with one race, ethnic, or other minority group than with others? If so, explain why this might be the case.
Compare and contrast the respondent's views with your own. How would you answer the same questions?

Discussion: Stereotypes: Categories and Concepts for Understanding the World
Picture a teacher talking to a student. In the instant that you thought of the word
teacher
, what image of a person jumped into your mind? What were the age, color, gender, and nationality of the imagined teacher? What was the teacher doing and wearing? Similarly, what image of a
student
appeared in your mind to distinguish between the two people?
Humans understand the world by creating categories and labeling concepts and, in this way, apply the concepts in a new circumstance. Stereotypes fall into this category of labeling concepts. They provide a system of coding that facilitates the acquisition of knowledge. On the other hand, stereotypes often demean people by distorting individual characteristics, skills, and abilities. By classifying people based on perceived characteristics of a group, inaccuracies arise at individual and group levels. These inaccuracies about individuals or groups can inhibit effective communication. As an intercultural communicator, however, there are some instances when using stereotypes can be helpful in gaining a level of cultural competence.
To prepare for your Discussion:
Review Chapter 6 in the course text
.
Pay particular attention to the section on stereotyping and the list of cultural categories. Have you seen or heard anyone stereotype any of these cultural categories either in the media or in your own experience?
Locate common stereotypes about your culture on the Internet. Do any of them surprise you? What is true about these stereotypes? What is untrue?
Find three common stereotypes of your culture in the media, or, using the cultural categories in Chapter 6 of the course text, think of a personal experience where you were stereotyped by your membership in one of those categories. Do you feel you are stereotyped in specific ways by certain cultural categories?
Reflect on a personal experience or an example in the media where your culture has been stereotyped by another culture. How does stereotyping by the sender or receiver of the message in this situation affect the intercultural communication?
Note:
One of the goals of this course is to promote a wide variety of views. You are encouraged to present your honest personal viewpoint while at all times reflecting a respectful tone for the views of others.

Discussion 1: Values and Culture
Cultures vary widely in the values to which members adhere. For example, some cultures may highly value personal achievement, where other cultures value religious convictions as a core value. One culture may emphasize the importance of being independent while another culture may focus on the importance of being a supportive group member.
As you review the Learning Resources for this Discussion, think about your own culture and the many values you hold dear. Then, think about the other cultures you will read about and why their value systems may be different from your own. How might understanding values and culture help you to develop as a professional and promote a sense of appreciation for others personally?
For this Discussion, you will examine how the basic concepts from social psychology i.e., socialization, social roles, social cognition, and social behavior are all influenced by culture.
To Prepare:
Select two dimensions or values described in this week’s Learning Resources.
Then, select two cultures other than your own found in this week’s Learning Resources.
By Day 3
Post and briefly define the two dimensions or values you selected. Next, describe and discuss examples of how these two dimensions or values are expressed in the two cultures you selected. In your explanation, make sure to explain how socialization, social roles, social cognition, and social behavior are influenced by culture.
Note: Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and identify current relevant literature to support your work.

Cultural relativism asserts that every culture has its own set of customs and beliefs, and that culture must be understood by the standards and values of the people within that culture. Anthropologists think that what might seem cruel or irrational in our own culture must be seen through the lens of cultural relativity, and that all cultures have practices or beliefs that can be seen by others as repugnant or incomprehensible.
After reading

2. America as a land apart. This examines how Americans have always thought of America as somehow different, special, set apart from other people, cultures, or countries. It applies to questions like whether America is seen as a haven for the world’s oppressed, as a power in the world, etc. It refers to how many generations of immigrants have seen America and why they came here. It also refers to several opposing or conflicting attitudes and values, such as isolationism (America should not get involved with the rest of the world), nativism (foreign immigrants are the problem), extreme patriotism? What are the positive and negative sides to American exceptionalism?
3. Equality and inequality. This includes the tensions between our cultural ideals and values of equality and the reality of inequality in America—poverty, racism, the heritage of slavery and relations to Native Americans, etc. You should be able to explain how/why social categories such as race, social class, and even gender, as socially constructed, not biological or inherent--how racial and class categories are socially constructed and negotiated and “man-made,” rather than biologically inherent and “God-given.” Basically: our physical and genetic traits are inherent and given, but how we and others choose to perceive, emphasize, or ignore various physical and genetic traits, how we place people into arbitrary categories based on these traits, and how we set one category as “higher” or better than another are all socially constructed and learned. We can look at inequality as giving different groups of people different access to wealth, power, and prestige, and how the same social categories that define our identity (race, ethnicity, gender, etc.) also place us somewhere in a social hierarchy. We can always “negotiate” and try to change this. How can inequality be seen on the level of individuals and images (personal attitudes of prejudice, etc.), institutions discrimination, (policies and practices of institutions that perpetuate racism or inequality), and ideology (systems of attitudes, beliefs, ideas, and symbols that rationalize and support or challenge the “rightness” of a situation of inequality). We can change individuals on the level interpersonal relationships, but if we do not change institutional policies and practices and develop an alternative ideology, we won’t change inequality. Then briefly explain why you identified as holding or lacking privilege. Provide a concrete example to demonstrate your understanding of privilege related to this specific identity characteristic. In the final column, provide a brief narrative about why you hold or lack privilege based on that specific identity.
Your place of privilege is often determined by the perceived social group in which society places you, and privilege varies depending on the context and intersecting identities. You may hold a position of privilege with one identity, while simultaneously holding a position which lacks privilege from another identity. You will not be graded on how you self-identify. The goal is to engage in self-reflection and critical thought. You may choose not to disclose any identity. Application Diversity, Equity, and Social JusticeNote This Appli.docxalfredai53p
Application: Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice
Note: This Application Assignment is also a Major Assessment for this course.
It is time now to examine and articulate the knowledge and understanding you have gained in the past weeks, and synthesize your thinking based on what you have learned and experienced in this course.
First
, review the four core propositions which form the context of this course:
Diversity starts with you: You play many different roles in life, called "social identities," and together these social identities make up who you are. Through your social identities you represent human diversity.
A person's diverse self comes to life, evolves, and exists within the milieu of the "family." Each "family" is diverse in itself; each has its own different family culture(s); and family culture(s) interact dynamically with the diverse world.
Conflicts and inequities arise when diversity is conceptualized and experienced as a "problem" and when individuals and/or institutions resist/are in opposition to diversity.
Equity and social justice are more likely attainable when diversity is conceptualized and experienced as opportunity.
Next,
review your Diversity Profile and examine your responses to the assignments in each week. Take time to analyze the ways in which your answers reflect a growing understanding of the four core propositions above.
Then,
consider any changes in your thinking with regard to diversity, equity and social justice
To complete the assignment, reflect on and write your response to the following:
In your own words, rewrite/summarize the four core propositions that form the foundation for this course.
Articulate at least one insight that you gained with regard to each of the four core propositions, and explain ways in which your current thinking about these propositions has changed from the beginning of the course.
Choose four of the "isms" and demonstrate your understanding of the nature of these "isms" by creating and writing four brief scenarios in which people interact with each other. (These interactions can be between children, adults and children, or between adults; include verbal and non-verbal interaction; and expressions of microaggressions and/or bias and/or prejudice. Be sure to indicate in the title of each scenario which "ism" each of the four scenarios represents.)
Discuss in what ways the study of the eight "isms" (racism, classism, ableism, and religion-ism; sexism, heterosexism, LGBT-ism, and ageism) has informed and influenced your professional life as it relates to promoting and advancing the well-being of young children and their families.
Explain why it is vital that early childhood professionals understand the nature of privilege and oppression.
Articulate at least one consequence of this understanding related to your career as an early childhood.
Choose three examples from the video "Diversity and Equity Work: Lessons Learned" that demonstrate ways in which a "lesson learned" turned in.
Discussion 1 ExpectationsUnderstanding the role of diversity inhuttenangela
Discussion 1: Expectations
Understanding the role of diversity involves some self-reflection. Self-reflection helps in understanding the framework from which you perceive yourself and others and approach interactions with others. Are there some facets of diversity that you are particularly aware of and others that you might have overlooked? Do you perceive some facets of diversity as being a deficit or a difference? As you ask yourself these types of questions, you will likely begin to appreciate the complex topic of diversity. In this Discussion, you will engage in self-reflection and discuss what you hope to gain from this course. This Discussion topic will be revisited later in the course.
To prepare:
Consider the question Akhtar & Jaswal (2013) ask regarding deficit or difference, and how differences between populations should be interpreted.
Think about how you define diversity. Do you perceive some characteristics of diversity as a deficit, while perceiving others as a difference?
Consider situations in which you worked with children and adolescents with diverse backgrounds. Did you perceive their diversity characteristic as a deficit or a difference?
Post by Day 3:
Write your own informal definition of diversity. Explain what diversity means to you in terms of how it might affect your interactions with children and adolescents. Then share your thoughts on what you expect to gain from this course.
Discussion 2: Diversity and Developmental Science
Contemporary developmental theories and studies of developmental science often make note of the role of diversity in shaping human thought and behavior. One aspect you will likely note is that diversity is a complex topic, and its effect can be found throughout the lifespan. In this Discussion, you will examine scholarly articles and analyze how diversity is addressed in contemporary developmental science.
To prepare:
As you review the Learning Resources for this week, think about contemporary developmental theories and ideas account for diversity. Is diversity discussed overtly or is it merely implied?
Choose one diversity characteristic (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual identity/orientation, language, family configuration) for discussion.
Choose one of the Learning Resources for discussion.
Post by Day 4:
Explain whether contemporary developmental theories take into account all aspects of diversity. Justify your position.

Here is the topic I choose to work on---- Muslim women barred from driving cars
Then, using the APA formatted template (Links to an external site.), write a 1320 word paper (not including title page) that addresses the following:
· Describe the diversity situation or cultural dilemma and the cultural groups impacted by this topic.
· Explain the types of power or privilege each group possesses. In what ways are members of each group aware (or not aware) of their power or privilege?
· Discuss the types of prejudice or discrimination applied to each group. Is the discrimination or prejudice overt or covert?

The following questions should serve as a guide for your entry:
· What is one group (racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, gender, religious, social class, etc.) with which you feel you can identify in terms of belonging to this group?
· Would you consider this group a majority or minority group? Why?
· How important is this group identity to you? If it is very important, what do you think makes it important? If it is not, why do you think it is not important to you?
· In what way or ways might this group identity help to shape your view of the world?
· How is your ability to be objective about minority-majority issues influenced, either positively or negatively by this group identity?
Comments:
Carl, you’ve done a very good job on your first journal entry and your application of the concepts of “machismo” and objectivity. See my comment on the definition of minority. Are Hispanics considered a minority only due to their numbers? Other relevant concepts that might apply to what you’ve written here might be symbolic interaction and cultural differentiation.
You needed to apply two theories this week. You might have used social identity theory to explain your feeling of comfort around those like you in terms of the ethnicity and social status. You might also have used Interactionist theory to explain the process of cultural transmission of Hispanic norms and values, especially those that apply to Hispanic males as well as to explain why skin color may be significant in the U.S. while it is not as significant in Latin American countries. Interactionists would also suggest that taking one’s time may be interpreted as being lazy in the US and this might result in conflict. Our culture shapes our perceptions and in turn, this influences how we react to those who are not like us in certain respects. Your APA format is very good overall. If the information cited is quoted material, then you also need to include the page number on which the quoted material is located.
As noted in the instructions, these journals are “practice” for the paper. They are meant to help you in applying concepts and theory, so be sure to follow my comments and the feedback I give you each week. Review the rubric below to see where you need to concentrate on improving your entries. If you do not understand something, please contact me. Thanks! Instructor C :-)
The ethnic group with which I feel I can identify in terms of belonging to this group is Hispanic. I would consider this group to be a minority group and so does society. Although Hispanics have grown significantly in numbers throughout the United States their numbers as far as population goes are still low in comparison to others in the United States[k1] . Hispanics have grown to be the largest minority group in the United States (Parrillo, 2011). Being Hispanic to me is very important. It signifies who I am and what I am about. On the first page of the template, complete the Diversity Wheel
(ATTACHED)
. Your completed “My Diversity Wheel” should list important demographics or affiliations that comprise your self-concept, categorized as either primary or secondary dimensions. As one example, rather than listing gender, be sure to list your specific gender.)
Identity Self-Reflection
On the second page of the template, write an identity self-reflection essay of a minimum of 600 words. Cite at least two sources from an Online Library (e-books or journal articles) to support the ideas you presented, as you reflected on your own experience. Also, be sure to cite the textbook if you reference the ideas presented there. Use APA style to cite your sources. Additionally, be aware of Waldorf’s Academic Integrity Policy as you prepare your work for this course.
Address the following in your essay:
1. Discuss your identity or self-concept. Evaluate how each of the primary dimensions you listed in “My Diversity Wheel” contributes to your overall self-concept. As you completed the “My Diversity Wheel” exercise, what did you learn about your self-concept?
2. How does your self-concept influence your experiences in team and organization settings? Specifically, how does your self-concept shape the way you relate with others? How does your identity influence the way others relate with you? Give specific examples, incorporating your primary and/or secondary dimensions of diversity into your discussion.
3. Describe a group within your organization or your community (either face-to-face or virtual) which you are closely affiliated. Using the Diversity Wheel, discuss the primary or secondary dimensions that this group has in common. For which dimensions are people within the group different or diverse? What draws you to affiliate with this group?
4. Why is evaluating your own self-concept important for understanding diversity and inclusion?

What was your experience of completing the implicit bias test? Which test did you choose,
and why?
Reflecting on the self-awareness test was interesting. It allowed me to think deeply to give a clear
and precise answer. The questions were occasionally considered but never asked how I might I feel
about a particular topic. I took the ADDRESSING-GSA- Self-Assessment test to recognize the
cultural characteristics of individuals. As social workers, it is essential to adapt and understand
people from all different cultural backgrounds. The result from the test shows what areas I was
more dominant in and what areas I was less dominant in. The results were not surprising to me,
and they gave me a better perspective of what areas I will need to learn and understand better.
Social workers need to be culturally competent, be self-aware of areas that exhibit bias, and be
willing to work on those areas.
What self-awareness themes have emerged so far in Week 1’s Discussion and this week’s
activities?
The self-awareness themes that have emerged from the discussions are reflecting on oneself and
digging deep to know yourself. As well as how do I perceive myself culturally and the dimension
of diversity? Reading through the learning recourses from the course in both weeks were a great
learning experience for me in addressing cultural, diversity and that is expected, especially since
this is the class that it is being taught. Learning the dynamics of culture and diversity will be a
great asset as the social work profession will be working with individuals of all backgrounds.
Identify a population that you are not comfortable with or would like to know more about;
this could be a population represented by the implicit bias test you took, but it does not have
to be.
I would say that I am comfortable with all types of populations. I work amongst a vastly diverse
group of people that I call my second family from home. The people that I would like to learn
more about are young adult and the elderly population. Young adults are at a critical development

Choose either Option A or Option B. Formulate an initial post in which you address the points noted in the prompt for your chosen option.
Option A: Assimilation
The textbook discusses the process of assimilation. After viewing the film,
Indian School: Stories of Survival
, answer the following questions:
What is the definition of
assimilation
according to your textbook?
What were you most surprised to learn from the film?
Why did the American government decide to assimilate Native American children into Western culture?
How did this affect them long term?
Is assimilating others into another culture ever justified?
Option B: Cultural Relativism
Cultural relativism asserts that every culture has its own set of customs and beliefs, and that culture must be understood by the standards and values of the people within that culture. Anthropologists think that what might seem cruel or irrational in our own culture must be seen through the lens of cultural relativity, and that all cultures have practices or beliefs that can be seen by others as repugnant or incomprehensible.
After reading
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
, explain whether you think cultural relativism can coexist with the idea of universal human rights. Is it possible for anthropologists to promote human rights without imposing their own values and ideas of human rights? Explain your position.
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required materials and/or other scholarly sources. Cite your sources in the body of your post and provide a complete reference for each source used at the end of it.

One thing that makes this identi.

(ATTACHED)
2. Identity self-reflection
My Diversity Wheel

Identify a population that you are not comfortable with or would like to know more about;
this could be a population represented by the implicit bias test you took, but it does not have
to be.
I would say that I am comfortable with all types of populations. I work amongst a vastly diverse
group of people that I call my second family from home. The people that I would like to learn
more about are young adult and the elderly population. Young adults are at a critical development

period of their lives. They are legally an adult but are not mentally or financially able to care for
themselves. Many of them are in the system and aging out. I often wonder what will be their next
step for their future. How will they get healthcare coverage for health check-ups? Where will they
live, and how safe are the areas where they reside? The elderly population is another group of
people that I would like to learn more about. They are considered vulnerable as some have to rely
on caretakers for their daily needs. Learning about these two different populations will gives ...

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This week you are exploring what it means to have.docx
1. This week you are exploring what it means to have
This week you are exploring what it means to have privilege in all aspects of life, whether it
be that you are able to enroll in school and take this course, or that you are able to walk,
type, see, taste, or purchase/have access to groceries. Having privilege also means that you
have power of some sort. Even having access to goods and services can be seen as a
privilege. Discrimination can accompany power and privilege as those who have power and
privilege may not be consciously aware of how they benefit from it.Instructions:First,
Chapter 4 of The Ecology of Diversity (Kahn, 2015) has a “Reflections on Diversity” section
near the end entitled, “Membership in Dominant and Subordinate Groups.” Follow the
instructions provided in the chapter and complete the chart considering who are you are
and what relationships you have with each type of group.Second, write at least three
paragraphs (300 words) addressing the following questions:1) How has privilege, in any/all
forms, shaped your life? Consider race, socioeconomic status, education, and other
associations identified in Week 1.2) Have you been aware of the privileges in your life as
you were growing up? Why or why not?3) As you learn more about privilege, and as you
examine your life, what do you find most interesting or surprising?4) How has privilege
shaped your life opportunities, life chances, experiences, etc.?
