This magazine cover uses some conventional rock magazine design elements like similar colors and fonts to existing titles. The front cover features a stereotypical "angry rock star" posing against a wall, a common band photography backdrop. However, it also has some unconventional design choices like borders around the cover and interior photos arranged in an unusual three-image bordered layout. The document discusses the magazine's lowercase pink bubbly font masthead which draws inspiration from popular music magazines to stand out and attract readers' attention as the magazine's recognizable logo placed above the front cover image.
2. What you get on front covers
Conventions
My magazine is conventional in the sense that it uses similar colours
and fonts to other existing rock magazines. My two-page spread is
structured like a typical article in a rock magazine, with the large photo
and the footer with the trivia. My model is wearing a stereotypical
‘angry rock star’ expression, and is standing in front of a wall, which is
also quite often used in band photography
However, my magazine has some unconventional features, such as
borders on my front cover. Many existing magazines do not usually
have borders.
I also have some unconventional photos that I have used on my double
page spread – the ones which have 3 images surrounded by one
border.
6. Conventions
I decided to have my magazine masthead in lowercase and in
a pink, bubbly font, I got this theme from magazines we love
pop and top of the pops. From the we love pop masthead I
have taken the same pink colour scheme as it has come to be
quite popular in many of the magazines, therefore I employed
it onto the masthead, I believe this would be big and bright to
attract the reader as it stands out. The masthead has to be
recognisable to the buyer as my masthead then becomes the
logo for the magazine. The colour and font style also become
the house style of the magazine as everything else matches it.
I have found in my research that mastheads are not that
important as they tend to cover parts of it with the
model/image, whereas on my magazine the I decided to
place the masthead onto of the image to draws attention to
the reader/buyer.
