2. Remember from classification…
• All bacteria used to be in a kingdom called
Monera.
• Now there are two kingdoms: Eubacteria
and Archaebacteria.
• The main difference is the presence or
absence of peptidoglycan in their cell
walls.
(Archaebacteria do not have peptidoglycan
in their cell walls.)
3. • Both types are prokaryotes which means?
• Archaebacteria are the ones considered
old organisms and they can survive harsh
environments.

5. Characteristics of bacteria.
• Smallest/ simplest living
thing. (Viruses- smaller but
non-living)
• Prokaryotic no organelles or
nucleus
• Genetic material =circular
Plasmid
7. Compare the types of metabolism
used to classify bacteria.
• FEEDING
Strept REQUIREMENTS:
throat
bacteria • Some are
heterotrophs: live as
parasites
• Some feed on dead
material: saprobes
• Some are
Blue-green
photosynthetic:
autotrophs
bacteria
8. 2 types of Bacterial Adaptations
Endospore
• ENDOSPORES:
• Hard, outer covering
produced during harsh
environments
• Resistant to drying out, and
boiling
• autoclave heat and
pressure to pop the
endospore
9. Bacterial adaptations.
TOXIN PRODUCTION:
• Poison produced when
Endospore grows
• Competition: kill off other
bacteria
• Some deadly
• Examples: botulism (food
poisoning) and tetanus
(lock jaw)
