Get Rid of Banned Books for Good
The American Library Association has recorded a total of 275 books that were challenged in 2015,
The Holy Bible was one of the top 10 most challenged books. The challenging and banning of books
is a huge item in the United States of America. The American Library Association has a week
devoted to banning books which takes place the last week end of September. Banned Books Week
for 2016 will be September 25 through October 1. It is not ethical to ban books due to content such
as: language, sexually explicit, unsuited for age group, and homosexual situations Banning Books

Megan McArdle states "During the time when people are supposed to be learning to face an often
hard world as adults, and going through the often uncomfortable process of building their
intellectual foundations, they are demanding to be sheltered from anything that might challenge their
beliefs or recall unpleasant facts to their mind." If you are removed from anything that goes against
your beliefs, then you won't be able to adapt to the really world. The real world is all about adapting
and learning with many different people that are very different from you. JW Wilson, from the
Advanced Learning Institute says in a quote "Some parents and educators believe that a child is like
a huge container. To insure the child's success, they think it their job to fill it up with as much
information as possible, as quickly as possible. This misconception is damaging the brilliance of
millions of our youth." JW Wilson is saying that students need to be sheltered and not be bombarded
with a lot of information. In an article it states that "People may have to tolerate the existence of
offensive speech in society as a whole, but they do not have to accept its presence in a library
funded by their tax dollars" ("Library"). If people aren't expose to questionable topics before
stepping out into college or the real world it will be hard for them to adjust to dealing with offensive
speech since it is everywhere: television, the internet, and even the

Why Book Books Should Not Be Banned?
32 million adults in America can't read, of which 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th
grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can't read. The current literacy rate isn't any
better than it was 10 years ago. ("The U.S. Illiteracy Rate Hasn't Changed In 10 Years") With that
many people illiterate, this can harm the further education of America. And not only America, but
other illiterate people in other countries can ruin the nation's education. Especially their future
children of the world. Banning books would be a huge step that could change many people's lives.
That is why books should not be banned due to its educational importance, its necessity as grown
ups, and people have the freedom to read and they will not be stopped.
When kids read the same book, enjoying a common reading experience, peer bonds are built within
a generation. When children, parents, and grandparents share classic books, extended familial and
community bonds are formed creating a shared frame of reference. (The National Children's Books
and Literacy Alliance) As kids will read books, it helps them educationally and socially. When kids
read books, they can extend their vocabulary and make their writing better. As kids will read books,
they can discuss the book with their peers or relatives and books can help you be happy as "You are
never lonely when you have a book to read." (The National Children's Books and Literacy Alliance)
As a matter of fact, kids have freedom to

The Controversy: The Banning Of Books In Schools
Every year, hundreds of books are challenged, banned, and/or removed. According to American
Library Association, more than 11, 300 books have been challenged, banned, or removed in schools
and libraries across the country since 1982. The reasons why books are banned were discussed
during an interview between Time For Kids and the director of ALA's Office for Intellectual
Freedom, James LaRue. "Books are banned because they fall under one of these categories of
controversy: Religion, Sexual Content, Profanity, or Race." (LaRue, 2016). Many books that have
been banned, at one point in time, fall under one these categories. Some more well–known books
included: The Holy Bible, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill ...

"Harry Potter has been in the 1990–1999 and 2000–2009 "Frequently Challenged Books" lists and
currently is on the "Frequently Challenged Children's Books" list." (bannedbooksweek.org). "When
it came out, some people said the book was about Satan and promoted witchcraft." (LaRue, 2016).
This reasoning cause parents to file complaint to schools asking them to remove the books from
their libraries. Some school even had to require a permission slip from the children's parents. Now
not all parents were like this. Some parents did not see the comparison with magic as Satanic but as
another fantasy book like The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. Other parents
thought the censorship was absurd and a few of them took actions to voice that opinion. For
example: Counts v. Cedarville School District. In this case, Cedarville school board voted that the
Harry Potter books would require a permission slip if a child wish to check it out. This vote
infuriated some parents so much that they took it court. The parents argued that this vote was against
the First Amendment and won the case requiring all libraries in that district to get rid of the
permission slips. Even though the book series has ended, there is still controversy over it

The Importance Of Censorship In Literature
According to author Mette Newth, forms of censorship can be traced back to as early as 399 BC
when officials "sentenced" Socrates "to drink poison" as a punishment "for his corruption of youth
and his acknowledgement of unorthodox divinities." From this point, Newth goes on to note that
uncensored free speech "was a challenge" for early religious figures. As the leaders watched
seemingly dangerous ideas pour into their once pure world through literature and verbal stories,
"censorship became more rigid, and punishment more severe." However, regardless of the efforts
put forth, these leaders could not hold back the changes to come, and the world progressed.
Attempts to censor the words put into the world eventually spread from primarily religious leaders,
the government, and even to citizens with no authority whatsoever. Over time, censorship has
increased to some degree in terms of literature, but the people should not have to tolerate any form
of censorship. Regardless of any reason for it, censorship, specifically book banning, proves itself
unnecessary and the decision of what art or information anybody intakes should remain up to the
consumer themselves. When censorship began, literature suffered all of the initial impact. As
printing technology advanced and leaders lost complete control over what information people
omitted into the world, Newth states that "the printed book [b]ecame a religious battleground."
However, the censorship of book quickly went far past

I Know Why There Are Flowers In the Attic
Over the past forty years, there have been banned books that have been created by some of the most
famous authors that we know today including V.C. Andrews and Maya Angelou. One might wonder
why a children's book such as, Winnie the Pooh, could ever be banned? This classic book children
all around the world enjoy, unfortunately can not be enjoyed in the small town of Tuszyn, Poland
because Pooh is half dressed and he does not have a specific gender (Graef). The history of banning
books, the process of banning books, and the reasons for banning Flowers on the Attic and I Know
Why the Caged Bird Sings are all questions some might ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Flowers in the Attic was banned for several reasons; incest between the mother, Corrine and father,
Chris, which is Corrine's half uncle. The sexual intercourse contents between the daughter, Cathy,
and the son, Christopher. Many schools and libraries have banned this book for both those main
reasons. Other reasons were because of the little food provided from the grandmother, Olivia. She
also locked Cathy, Carrie, Cory, and Christopher in the attic. "Maybe, maybe even a week, no
longer, possibly much less time I just don't know exactly" (Andrews, 41). The mother promised she
would come back, but she left them in the attic for almost four years, and she came sometimes to
check on the children, but she was too caught up in making her dad write her in his will that she no
longer cared for her children. The incest between Corrine and Chris caused lashes on her back from
her mother, Olivia. "I stared at the ladder of bloody welts on Momma's back" (Andrews, 76). The
grandmother is completely dedicated to the bible and therefore when the grandmother figured out
what the mother had done, she showed the children what she would do if they did the same as their
sinful mother. After the children were petrified of the grandmother, they tried to do all that she
requested and obey all her rules. Until one day Cathy was admiring her body and Christopher who
was drawn by Cathy's complexion came up to her and told her she was

Why 1984 Should Be Banned
As with any form of someone's artistic creation there are bound to be good and bad opinions or
criticisms. So when someone writes a book they know it will not please everyone. However, do any
authors ever think, "Not only can my book be ill–received, but it might even get banned." Now what
does it mean for a book to be banned? Well it means that reading said book is not allowed either by
school, state or even country. To enforce the banning libraries and bookstores will not have the
books available for people to check out. For a book to be banned it must first be challenged, but not
all challenged books get banned. For example, the book 1984 was banned in the Soviet Union for
being against communism and was burned. However, in Jackson County, ... Show more content on

In doing so, both of them can be arrested and accused of acts of rebellion simply by their meeting in
secret. Both characters are aware what they are doing is illegal and are okay with it because they
want to in someway feel like they are rebelling. When Julia asks Winston what he thought of her
when he first saw her he says, "I hated the sight of you. I wanted to rape you and then murder you
afterwards. Two weeks ago I thought seriously of smashing your head in with a cobblestone..."
When Julia describes her activities with the government she says, "Hours and hours I've spent
pasting their bloody rot all over London." Both their language in this scene is vulgar and Julia's is
seen as a bigger surprise because workers of the government or citizens are not supposed to speak in
that manner, especially about the government. However, since both of them dislike the government
it is through their language that they can further rebel. Sometime later in the same hiding spot they
had met, Winston and Julia have a moment of intimacy. This is one of the worst acts of rebellion
against the government since being intimate can lead to forming a relationship. For the government,
it also means that a citizen's loyalty is not entirely to it's country. As they are about to begin Winston
asks if she had ever done this before. Julia replies with, "Of course.

Should Books Be Banned
To Save An Innocent Mindset
Intro:
Does it feel like an elementary child, has been exposed to too much turmoil? Well, in today's
society, elementary children are reading books that reveal unbefitting aspects. An organization
called Banned Books Week, is trying to take a stand on this situation, by banning these books. These
books have impacted the students negatively, to where they're making bad decisions. Children are
naturally curious about things. If they hear or read something, they're more likely to try it. Putting
themselves into harm's way. Children are exposed to graphic elements, profanity, violence,
negativity, and witchcraft. Books should be banned. By banning these books, it can help save the
mindsets of growing children.
Body paragraph 1:
Books should be banned because it has impacted the students negatively, to where they're making
bad decisions and the parents are standing behind this delegation, of banning the books. By having
these parents care about what their child is consuming and analyzing, it is saving their child's
mindset. On Page 9, 10 Reasons For Banning Books, And 5 Much Better Reasons Not To, states:
"Parents have objected to the book's "profanity," "lurid passages about sex," "immorality,"
"excessive violence," "negativity," "communist" elements and depiction of alcohol abuse–criticisms
guaranteed to discourage teenage readers." On Page 5, How Banning Books Marginalizes Children,

The Controversy Of Banning Books In Schools
A "challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or
group. A banning is the removal of these materials"(Banned Books Week). Books should not be
banned. Proponents of book banning argue that they can no longer trust libraries and schools to
protect students from controversial material, by banning books they are protecting students from
these inappropriate and controversial material, and they say some books are offensive to certain
groups. But by banning books, you place limitations on students, violate the freedoms of authors as
well as the readers, the reasons behind the majority of bannings are absurd, most likely avoidable,
and implicated by fear. Banning books places limitations on adolescents. ... Show more content on

Banning books is an exaggerated solution to an avoidable problem. Specifically, "rather than
banning [a] book for it's sexual content, a better solution would be for parents to put such subjects
into perspective for the children who may want to read the book" (Rich). Some parents think that
banning books is the only to deal with their children around touchy subjects, when, in reality, sitting
down and talking with their children would have been not only easier, but more effective, too.
Books are banned for a multitude of reasons, many of which most people do not agree upon. For
instance, there is "a biased, non–standard scale of what random people perceive as wrong or
unsuitable" in which determines whether or not a book is banned (Yung). What some parents might
consider horrifyingly inappropriate, others might consider a necessary lesson for the education of
their child. Promoters of book banning say that they are protecting children's innocence, but book
banees only do what they do because they're afraid, afraid of new things and afraid of letting their
kids grow up. In the words of accredited author and Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award
recipient, Judy Blume, "I believe that censorship grows out of fear, and because fear is contagious,
some parents are easily swayed... They want to believe that if their children don't read about it, their
children won't know about it. And if they

Essay On Banning Books
One of the most aggravating things a parent can do in the eyes of a teen is to tell them they cannot
do something. There is always a lure to the forbidden. So when a parent discovers a book that they
want to keep out of their child's hands, the one thing the child is going to want to know is what is in
that book. Banning books, however, is not a productive form of protection. Books should not be
banned for their content as this action takes away from student's education and limits them (cop).
The banning of books is done to keep a book and its contents away from public viewing. Parents
find scenes or offensive words in a book or think the content could be difficult for their child to take
in. A challenged book is a book that a person or people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Books are an essential part of a student's education as they contain realistic knowledge that is meant
to open students' eyes up to the world around them (cov). Adriana Lopez, a journalist for University
Wire, writes against the banning of books in her article, "Literary Censorship in Schools Impedes
Progress" and encourages the use of all books. She argues against the way that schools shield
students from real world issues, such as the events that target humans who are viewed as unequal
and suffer because of unfair treatment (Lopez). Ken Petrelli, librarian for American Library
Association, quotes author Judy Blume in Petrelli's article "Banned Books Week:" Blume states that
parents "want to believe that if their children don't read about it, their children won't know about it.
And if they don't know about it, it won't happen" (qtd by Petrelli). Books open the eyes of students
and help them comprehend past and existing world issues. Being aware of the world around them
ensures kids and teens will not be taken advantage of in situations concerning controversial topics.
Despite a parent's good intention, taking away books that might reveal some unknown knowledge to
a youth only blinds them and makes them

The Pros And Cons Of Banning Books
People will soon be able to read books without them being banned because of some content. It is
unfair that people don't get these books even though they need it for things in school or other types
of things. They ban some books because they are either too challenged or they have some other
problems. The society is taking away kids and adults rights because they are too challenging. We are
going to explore why people are deciding to ban books because of their content. The reason why
books should not be banned because by banning books won't help out when they are taking away
people rights and it won't help kids when they need this certain book to get through things. First
there is this quote, "The first half of this volume presents an introductory ... Show more content on

Then they out this, "For as long as humans have printed books, censors have argued over their
content and tried to limit some books' distribution. But the reasons for challenging literature change
over time, and as Banned Book Week begins on Sept. 25, it's clear that public discomfort with
particular ideas has evolved rapidly even in the last 20 years." (Sarah Begley). This quote is telling
the society that every year on September 25th they start banned book week. This connects to banned
books because they are losing tons of books by banning them and they even made a week for
banning books. After that they put this one, "Comrades, you have heard already about the strange
dream that I had last night. But I will come to the dream later. I have something else to say first. I do
not think, comrades, that I shall be with you for many months later longer, and before I die, I feel it
my duty to pass on to you such wisdom." (Orwell 6). This quote is telling you about why the
animals started a revolution. This goes into banned books because it is telling kids to go against
older people. This is telling schools that we should not ban the books because they get too

To Kill A Mockingbird Should Be Banned Essay
The Banning for To Kill a Mockingbird
The book called "To Kill a Mockingbird" was written by a great author Harper Lee. The book had
won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. It sold over millions of copies, and was one of the favorite novels in
1999. The book was known to make a difference in people's lives, but then soon became known to
be banned in many other states. It was also was celebrated for Banned Books Week because they
didn't agree with the decision. There are three most important points of the research for the banning
of to kill a mockingbird. First the reasons why it was banned or challenged. Second, why this novel
shouldn't be banned, and third, the mitigating measures for the book to be available for students.
The novel was banned in 2011 and 2009 because of the use of profanity, racial slurs, and rape. In the
years of 2002–2012 the novel was challenged in local high schools and middle schools. One school

There a few examples to help better the parents and child's understanding for this book and it is
great for book projects, it will also boost students reading ability. Also there should be counseling
available to students who do become offended and that would be a way to talk about how they feel.
Students who are given small assignments in class can help them understand the material better.
Also involving parents to join in on readings or to have them do an assignment with the child at
home could be another example. There should be group presentations or having a guest speaker
come to the schools to discuss the novel with students. There are so many measures parents and
school board could take and it would be beneficial to the student's success in critical thinking and

Banned Books: Reasons For Banning Books In Schools
In 2014, 311 books were banned or challenged in schools and libraries across the United States
(Banned Books: Reasons for Banning Books). Each year books are being banned or are unavailable
at certain places for many different reasons. Some might say that all books should be accessible for
anyone who wants to read them. However, some books have content that some may not understand
clearly or might have an effect how they think afterwards. Therefore, books should only be available
for the correct age group because some books may confuse those younger than the indented
audience.
Some say that all books should be there for all to read or books should not be banned in schools.

When certain books are given to the right age groups, then some situations won't be so cruel. Such
as "In 2006, some parents in a Kansas school district decided that talking animals are blasphemous
and unnatural; passages about the spider dying were also criticized as being 'inappropriate subject
matter for a children's book'" wouldn't be such a big deal if the children were old enough to
understand that the talking animals were not real and the spider dying is simply a part of life. (15
Books Banned For The Most Absurd Reasons Ever.) Also, children should be given the opportunity
to read books that are about or from the perspective of children the same age. Even though some
books may have a negative effect towards the readers, most books that teenagers read are about the
same difficulties that lots of teenagers go through. Therefore, children can learn ways to deal with
the conflicts they have in their lives. (Banned Books Week 2015) In conclusion, books can affect
children in both positive and negative ways and banning them can determine whether those affects
go into play or not. Children can get confused on how they view things in life. This is why books
should be given to kids are old enough to understand the content clearly. Although the opposing side
would say that anyone should be able to read what they want, some content can damage the minds
of those who don't

Book Banning
Think back to when you were in high school, do you remember that one book you read that really
opened your eyes? Well the sad reality is that somewhere in the world that favorite book you read is
either banned or challenged in a library. So it sits locked away never to open the eyes of another or
help educate them further on its contents. Books should not be banned in libraries. We have the
freedom of speech, so why take away or censor our freedom to simply read and consume literature?
There are usually two ludicrous reasons as to why books are banned or challenged, one of them is
that someone gets offended by its contents. I see in many cases that a very religious person gets
outraged by homosexuality in books, and sadly enough that is one of the leading causes of ... Show

Some religions do not like talk of magic or sorcery in fiction books, but that does not mean they

gets upset that their child is reading a book that may contain some more mature scenes. I understand
that some parents may want to protect their children from the more mature content, but by no means
should you ban the book. Someone older and more mature may find this book enlightening! A great
example of this is a parent in Wallingford, Connecticut who filed a complaint against Perks of Being
a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and took matters so far to have the book banned. The parent
complained about the book's depiction of homosexuality, sex, and a "glorification of alcohol use and
drugs," according to the local news paper. Perks of being a wallflower is about a boy suffering

Argumentative Essay: Banning Certain Books
Banning Certain Books Is Taking Away A Personal Freedom
"What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist," said Salman
Rushdie, a novelist and essayist. People believe books should be banned because, of their content. If
this is the case then does the freedom of expression mean anything at all? People can make their
own choices and decide what they do and don't read. If, we take away the advantage, we already
have of being able to read books.
Consequently, by putting censorship on things that, may seem questionable is, dishonoring the first

Fahrenheit 451 Research Paper
The world created by Ray Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451 mostly relates to today's society in that both
societies have banned books, which leads people to become dependent on technology; This
dependence prevents people from being a part of the community and thinking for themselves.
However, the extent Bradbury portrays the insensitivity towards violence creates an extremely
dangerous world, whereas today's society is more aware and sensitive to violence.
The extent people will go to to ensure that others are not offended in both societies is completely
similar because this leads to the banning of ideas in today's world and the banning of books in
Bradbury's world. After seeing a woman defying the norms of society to protect her books, Montag

Captain Beatty then comes to Montag's house in order to get rid of these doubts. He explains that
firemen "were given the new job, as custodians of our peace of mind, the focus of our
understandable and rightful dread of being inferior; official censors, judges, and executors"
(Bradbury 56). Beatty explains the job description of a fireman changed because they are supposed
to preserve the happiness of the people. They burn books because the ideas that books represent can
offend people and make a person feel as if another is superior to them. By comparing the firemen to
executors, the firemen are killing the ideas and people that a book represents just as an executor kills
a person. Another example of how today's society is starting to resemble the society portrayed in
Fahrenheit 451 is when Yale professor, Erika Christakis, was criticized for sending an email asking
students not to change themselves on a whim that they might offend someone . She explains that
"many decent people have proposed guidelines on Halloween costumes from a spirit of avoiding

Banned Books: Acceptable or Censorship?
The definition of censorship is the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc.
that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security (Merriam–Webster). For
example, The Giver might have lessons like the importance of life or memory that people might see
as essential. "Books Behind Bars" by Robert Doyle tells us the history behind Banned Book Week
and their stance on banned books. Next, "Banned and Challenged Books" informs us more about

Most of these reasons include dystopia or adult content. In The Giver they have very strict rules for
their citizens. One of those rules is to take these pills they have created to stop sexual dreams that
normal people have. Lowry writes, "He had not taken the pills, now, for four weeks. The Stirrings
had returned, and he felt a little guilty and embarrassed about the pleasurable dreams that came to
him as he slept," (Lowry 130). So, this community calls our sexual dreams Stirrings. Some argue
that kids that read this book do not need to be reading and knowing about this content. Another
place the reader might see why this book needs to be banned is during the Ceremony of Twelve
when they are assigning the jobs. On this specific page they are giving Asher his job (Lowry 55).
Lowry is attempting to say that in the future the government will essentially be picking our jobs.
Those who are for banning books would say that this would be a dystopia, it will not ever be that
way. The reader also might notice why The Giver might be banned is for it's darkness. The reader
notices this when Jonas receives his first memory of war. In chapter fifteen Lowry writes about one
of Jonas' first memories of war (Lowry). Obviously, the imagery gets a little gruesome. For
example, "Jonas heard a voice next to him. 'Water,' the voice said in a parched, croaking whisper. He
turned his head toward the voice and look into the half–closed eyes of a boy who seemed not much
older than himself. Dirt streaked the boy's face and his matted blonde hair. He lay sprawled, his gray
uniform glistening with wet, fresh blood," (Lowry 119). Would parents want their children to be
exposed to such gour and violence. For reasons such as inappropriate content, dystopia, and
violence The Giver has plenty of reasons to be banned and

young readers and gives readers that feeling that giving up is not an option and to keep pushing on.

experienced because of the book. The book yes may cause nightmares but you can't complain to a
school about your child having nightmares without having any evidence that the book caused it.
Some parent's argue that the book should be banned but their argument can be overturned. Parents
continue to argue about the violence that the book has, but they soon are going to have to notice that
the world is filled with violence and if you're going to ban a book because of the PG–13 violence in
the book you should think about what revolves around you every day. The opposition also argues
that the book causes nightmares but without evidence that the book was the thing that cause the
child to have the nightmare or was it something that your child seen on TV before bed or thought
about we will never no because there's no evidence the book caused the nightmare. Parents in the
situation seem as if they want the best for child and try to avoid and hide their child from the
violence but as they grow older there are going to be more harsh violence around them in the real
world and the book I think is preparing and maturing them for the

Essay On Book Banning
Book banning first became prevalent in America in the early to mid–nineteenth century. It was a
way to stop content that had been labeled sensitive or harmful from reaching its intended audience.
The first noted public challenge was Charles Darwin's On the Origin of the Species which included
a description of his theory that humans and other creatures could have evolved without the guiding
hand of a divine power, threatening many religious beliefs at that time. This led to the book being
banned in several states, including Connecticut and Tennessee. Over the next few decades, many
books would be challenged and banned; there would be protests and several court cases that make it
to a national level. Today, very few books are actually banned, however a great many are challenged
for their content that adults find too explicit or sensitive for their children. This past week was
Banned Books Week, a time where many Americans come together to read and discuss the topic of
banned books, why they were banned, and if it was really necessary. Banning books only started
because adults wanted to keep young, impressionable minds away from opinions that did not match
theirs. On the Origin of the Species was only banned because it questioned the possibility of a God
in a mostly Catholic society. To Kill A Mockingbird was originally banned because it addressed
racial problems in a society that was fighting for equality for all races. Literature like these works
have come to the people in

Banning Books Should Be Banned Essay
Banning books does not help anyone; banning a book in a library makes it more difficult for other
people to read the book if they can not afford to buy the book. The definition of a banned book is a
work that contains material that has been deemed inappropriate, offensive, or dangerous by certain
people or organizations. The people that usually challenge the books are parents of children
(Shumaker). An example of banned books would be the Harry Potter series. Parents wanted to ban
the books because the books contains sorcery throughout the whole book.
Furthermore, it is really easy to ban a book, all a person would have to do is challenge the book by
filling out a form of why they think the book should be banned("More"). If not enough people
disagree with the book being challenged, it will be banned. There are multiple reasons why ... Show

"Index of the Forbidden a catalog formally published by the Roman Catholic Church that listed
books that were considered dangerous to faith and morals" ("Index"). Banning books literally started
because someone was worried that they would lose followers if they read books that gave them
different ideas. Then there has been people in governments that have burned books since they did
not agree with what was in the book or who it was written by. This causes people to not think for
their own. Ronald Lankford has said, "Books were destroyed as a part of the process of
homogenizing, discourse, suppressing individualism in the interest of the collective and co–opting
or purging the intellectuals." From the banning of books, people have created banned book week.
This week is to buy or read books that have been wrongly banned. Banned book week was started in
1982 and it was only because someone noticed that more people have been challenging books. Since
then over 11,300 books have been challenged (Shumaker). It has gone as far as bookstores will

Why Should Books Be Banned In Schools
What would you do if a school let your kindergartener read a provocative book? What if a book
about becoming transgender was read for story time for first–graders? Are you willing to let your
child be exposed to that at such a young age? I know that I'm not, so I stand with censoring and
banning books. If books are inappropriate, children simply should not have access to them in a
public or school library. I think that if a book is banned, it is banned for a good reason. Furthermore,
I think that the process of censorship of books is perfect, for it needs to be strict enough in order to
keep children and adults safe from unsuitable books. Of course, everyone has the freedom to read
whatever they want, but they can do that in their own home ... Show more content on

Children would have the wrong things in their young minds instead of things like the alphabet or the
number system. To replace the sweet, developing stories, children's minds will be stimulated with
terrible politics, social issues, and other mature themes. According to a TIMES article, "Banned
Books: A School Librarian's Perspective," a the librarian, Sharon Coatney, believes that all libraries
should always put the child's education first. I think that school libraries can do that by providing
educational resources and books for the children. However, Coatney feels that, "Our students should
not be denied to the materials they need." She also thinks that by having "inappropriate" censorship
are providing "discriminated" readers. However, if we weren't able to ban any scandalous books,
what would be the point of having censorship? Censorship helps keep libraries in check with
appropriate books, and if you really "need" to read a certain books that is not available, most of
these books are still able to be bought on Amazon or on a pdf. To conclude, the idea of censorship
for books is great in order to keep the books young and old people read appropriate and

Censorship: The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn
The beautifully frightening thing about this book is its continued relevance. Since it's release in
1953, the topic of censorship has been a continued issue. In 1885, a school in Massachusetts first
banned The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, because they felt that it "[perpetuated]
racism" (Banned Books Week). Moreover, there was one instance that felt like it was taken straight
from Fahrenheit 451. That instance was the 1970 censorship of Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee, by
Dee Brown. This book portrayed the advancement of Americans as the United States grew. Doing
such from a Native American point of view. This made many standpoints about talking down about
the advancement of colonizers, and a general criticizing of white people.

The Influence Of Book Censorship In America
Book Censorship in America
Beginning in 399 B.C. when Socrates was sentenced to drink poison for corrupting his students due
to his non–traditional ideas, book censorship has become increasingly more prominent in today's
society. In fact, 275 books were banned in the United States alone in the year 2015, according to the
American Library Association (2016). Books such as The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
and even the ever–popular Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling have been banned for a variety of
reasons (American Library Association, 2015).
On the other hand, many concerned citizens believe that books should be banned because they may
contain violence such as shown in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Another reason people
believe that books should be banned is because of the book containing racial themes, as shown in
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Profanity is also a concern for many
Americans. A book banned for this type of content is The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger. Sexual
content is also a fear amongst individuals, such as shown in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
Lastly, individuals are extremely terrified that children will read about ideas that are different from
their own and questions the social hierarchy. One of these non–traditional books is To Kill A
Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Many individuals are concerned with the banning of ideas to be the problem, the real issue is the
freedom to read. As Helen Adams suggested at the opening of a banned books week; "School

of the 'freedom to read' vs. just banned books and incorporate all types of books into a display or

Essay on Is Censorship Unconstitutional?
Censoring knowledge is unconstitutional. Censorship had been going on since the beginning of the
written word. This means that is not hard to say that it has been used as a manipulation tactic since
the first man, or woman, placed their coal to a piece of dried goat skin. So does this make it wrong?
To understand censorship, you have to start at the beginning. Censorship, no matter the definition, is
when people who have power, wish to limit the knowledge of what we are receiving, or what we are
expressing. We have not always had the rights we have now. Benjamin Franklins brother and
employer, was actually arrested and lost his printing license for expressing criticism in his

The important story of Isralians giving birth control to Ethiopians without their consent is a perfect
example of this ("Top 25 censored stories from 2012–2013"). Now adays, the explosion of the
Internet has made it much easier for average people to post their opinions. Any person with access to
the Internet and a type of computer can easily post what is on their mind. From tweeting about their
breakfast to live blogging about their opinions on a national debate, every thing can be set free into
the world. Which is why, in 2011, The Stop Online Privacy Act swooped in with the desire to call
copy right in fragments to a halt, mainly backed by people in high stances in large corporations.
SOPA's made desire was to stop fan made art, stories, videos, songs, and parodies. SOPA gave the
US Department of Justice the right to control US Internet providers, and force sites like Youtube to
delete all material that contained copy right in fragments. This would basically wipe out the entire
Internet, because copy righted material would be completely unavailable unless purchased. And in a
country with 46.5 million people living in poverty, the chance to succeed slims drastically
("Poverty"). Many people actually apposed SOPA, and its companion PIPA. It was often claimed
that the act was a violation to their free speech, and that many smaller companies would not be able
to handle the backlash of it.

Arguments For Banning Books
Throughout time, countless great children's books have been published and then loved by many. To
name a few, Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene and The Hunger Games
by Suzanne Collins. What do these three books have in common? They were all published as
children's books, then kept out of their hands for numerous reasons. Parents and teachers claimed
these books were unfit for children's reading. They either introduced topics that were not open to
them yet or went against their lifestyle. All around the world, great books are being kept from
children for doltish reasons. They are being censored, then banned from their eyes. Taking this
literature from them is ruining their childhood; it is preventing children from learning about the
world and being ready for it. Censoring in children's books needs to become less harsh or else they
are going to grow up in a sealed world. For years now, censoring has been limiting the public's
freedom in literature, films, media, and plenty of other categories. A big section being censored
today, that troubles a lot of people, is children's literature. Books are the most common thing to be
censored, especially children's. They continue to ban books across the world, meant to be enjoyed,
for reasons they call valid. A popular excuse for banning books is the diversity displayed in them.

The ALA promotes the freedom to choose and the freedom to express one's opinion. The ALA OIF

librarians that are facing challenges to materials in their libraries. Banned books are usually
removed from libraries or schools. Online resources such as e–books and educational websites are
also being blocked and filtered in libraries. People believed that e–books were virtually censor proof
and that they would reduce the number of books being banned. Teachers in Colorado were subject to
be removed if they were caught teaching from the school boards banned books list. There are more
laws regulating public schools than public libraries. The Supreme Court deals with many cases

Many parents monitor what their child is reading. When something is brought home that they don't
agree with, this is when the anger comes out. Every parent believes the library's policies should be
set "by the people" (Berry). Parents believe when a book is "threatening" towards their child it
should immediately be removed from all shelves and forbid from being read by any other students.
This situation happens quite often, but in realization no child should be told what they are allowed
or not allowed to read by another student's parent. Some parents have even began to call them
"challenged" books because they believe the term is too harsh, and sounds too much like censorship.
Once again the term fear manifests itself; parents are extremely afraid of what their child can find in
between the pages of a book. Many of the times the parent will not read the book, but rather read the
premise and decide from there. Parents do not realize that the book they are reading could be the
most important books that child or teen could ever read. "Words and ideas... will help them fight
their monsters" (Finan). Children will never know how to be the best that they can be unless their
parent's guide them in the right direction, and that direction is towards the restricted section of the

Why Do School Books Should Be Banned From Schools
Books are an essential to both school and after school life. They are the messages that have shaped
our country. Unfortunately, many books have been banned from school libraries all across the
United States for their messages or the themes they possess. While these books could be read out of
school hours, they have been banned from school libraries or reading centers. While there are some
aspects I do not agree with, I do, however, believe this is a good policy because it preserves the
innocent minds of readers from inappropriate or unsuitable content.
As a child, I have enjoyed Disney's rendition of Alice in Wonderland. But as I read Lewis Carroll's

Why Should Banning Books Be Banned?
Does it feel like an elementary child, has been exposed to too much turmoil? Well, in today's
society, elementary children are reading books that reveal unbefitting aspects. An organization
called Banned Books Week, is trying to take a stand on this situation, by banning these books. These
books have impacted the students negatively, to where they're making bad decisions. Children are
naturally curious about things. If they hear or read something, they're more likely to try it. Putting
themselves into harm's way. Children are exposed to graphic elements, profanity, violence,

Reasons Why Books Should Not Be Banned
What's the Reason for Books Being Banned? There are multiple books around the world being
banned. One reason books should not be banned is because books can teach a lesson. Another reason
is that every book is written and published for a reason, if the publisher did not think the book was
worth something, they would not have wanted to publish it. Also that books can be encouraging and
inspirational. Some people believe books should not banned in schools/libraries because every book
can teach a lesson. One reason books should not be banned is because books can teach a lesson.
Books can teach a lesson by, "As soon as Jonas was assigned as Giver he didn't realize the
responsibility." (The Giver). That getting huge roles in life may mean that you are receiving more or
bigger responsibilities. It shows that with him getting the role of the Giver he had more
responsibilities, and with him learning his responsibilities he had to read more to learn them. If he
would not have had books he would not have been able to read about his new responsibilities as the
Giver. This quote connects because he has to be able to read to be the Giver and be head of the city.

This book's setting was in contemporary America (Foerstel, 165). It reflects the life of a family that
is determined not to let its struggles overcome them (Alan, 1). Originally written as a children's
book (Fuller 1), Bridge to Terabithia has two main characters, Jesse Oliver Aarons Jr., and Leslie
Burke. Jess is the character that comes from a poor background in a household that doesn't respect
him (Paterson, all). Leslie is the more kind character that influences Jess with her personality, even
though she does not believe in churchly teachings. May Bell believes that Leslie's beliefs will
condemn her to hell. Leslie became Jess' friend by beating him and his friends in a footrace (Alan,

One day, Jess wasn't with Leslie, so she had to go to Terabithia alone, even though she was scared

she fell into the creek and drowned (Alan, 1). Paterson wrote that Leslie was cremated, although she

with Leslie and died with her. Jess was only angry at his family because he could not believe that
Leslie was really dead (Paterson, all). Jess did not come to terms with Leslie's death for a long time
(Alan 1). Although, by the end of the story, he builds an actual bridge to Terabitha for his little sister
May Bell to replace Leslie (Paterson, all). Bridge to Terabithia placed ninth on the American Library
Assocation's list of 100 books that had been banned between 1990 and 2000 (Grogan, 1). This book
has been on PFAW's list four times, coming in at 7th, 6th, 8th, and 10th (Alan, 1). It was banned due

Thirteen Reasons Why Analysis
Preserving Intellectual Freedom The American Library Association states that the most challenged
and restricted reading material have been children books. However, challenges are not merely an
expression of a point of view; on the contrary, it is an attempt to remove materials from public use,
thus restricting the access to others. Even if the motivation to ban or challenge a book is well
intended, the outcome is unfair for everyone else. Censorship denies our freedom as individuals to
choose and think for ourselves. For children, decisions about what books to read should only be
made by the people who know them best–their parents! (Letter to the Editor). I strongly disagree
when people want books banned based on their own opinion of the book. The novel in question,
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, is no exception to frequent challenges. ... Show more content

It is a privilege that we all have in the United States and it should not be taken lightly. Parents
should understand that they have a right to decide what their child reads, but they should not take
away that same right from other parents. The attempt to expose students to challenging topics and
issues is not intended to force students into a certain mode of thought. Books serve as opportunities
for students to think, theorize, question, and explore those topics in a controlled environment
directed by teachers, parents, and experts and even though the book contains some sensitive material
the lessons learned are far superior to the controversial material presented in Thirteen Reasons Why.
Great lessons are not just learned in real life; we can learn them in books as well. Give the book an
honest try and do not be biased to sensitive material, grasp the main message of the book then make
the final decision, but make sure it is for your child, not the entire school

Why Do Books Shouldn T Be Banned
Books shouldn't be banned and i say this with a bold confident voice. The book challenges such as
sexually explicit or offensive language or even violence helps to teach the reader not to do these
things readers understand it's just a book and nothing more in fact the reader will take out a lot out
of books like that because it teaches them the effects and consequences if that reader did decide to
go down one of those paths. I believe strongly that us American citizens we are free and by them
banning books from us it's them take away our rights and freedoms.
In text one in the beginning it talks about how we the people are given free speech and by them
doing this they are taking away this right from us and it will only get worse. Text one lines 1–3
"Most Americans agree that the First Amendment right to freedom of expression is one of the most
sacred provisions of the US Constitution, a cornerstone of American democratic values."
Book banning is something that is so unnecessary it does nothing but away the rights of the people if
the book is "to sexual" or "violent" to read then you as a US citizen have the right to not read it you
aren't forced upon it. In the beginning of text 4 one school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

  • 1. Banning Books Research Paper Get Rid of Banned Books for Good The American Library Association has recorded a total of 275 books that were challenged in 2015, The Holy Bible was one of the top 10 most challenged books. The challenging and banning of books is a huge item in the United States of America. The American Library Association has a week devoted to banning books which takes place the last week end of September. Banned Books Week for 2016 will be September 25 through October 1. It is not ethical to ban books due to content such as: language, sexually explicit, unsuited for age group, and homosexual situations Banning Books go way back to burning of books and writings. Megan McArdle states "During the time when people are supposed to be learning to face an often hard world as adults, and going through the often uncomfortable process of building their intellectual foundations, they are demanding to be sheltered from anything that might challenge their beliefs or recall unpleasant facts to their mind." If you are removed from anything that goes against your beliefs, then you won't be able to adapt to the really world. The real world is all about adapting and learning with many different people that are very different from you. JW Wilson, from the Advanced Learning Institute says in a quote "Some parents and educators believe that a child is like a huge container. To insure the child's success, they think it their job to fill it up with as much information as possible, as quickly as possible. This misconception is damaging the brilliance of millions of our youth." JW Wilson is saying that students need to be sheltered and not be bombarded with a lot of information. In an article it states that "People may have to tolerate the existence of offensive speech in society as a whole, but they do not have to accept its presence in a library funded by their tax dollars" ("Library"). If people aren't expose to questionable topics before stepping out into college or the real world it will be hard for them to adjust to dealing with offensive speech since it is everywhere: television, the internet, and even the ... • 5. Why Book Books Should Not Be Banned? 32 million adults in America can't read, of which 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can't read. The current literacy rate isn't any better than it was 10 years ago. ("The U.S. Illiteracy Rate Hasn't Changed In 10 Years") With that many people illiterate, this can harm the further education of America. And not only America, but other illiterate people in other countries can ruin the nation's education. Especially their future children of the world. Banning books would be a huge step that could change many people's lives. That is why books should not be banned due to its educational importance, its necessity as grown ups, and people have the freedom to read and they will not be stopped. When kids read the same book, enjoying a common reading experience, peer bonds are built within a generation. When children, parents, and grandparents share classic books, extended familial and community bonds are formed creating a shared frame of reference. (The National Children's Books and Literacy Alliance) As kids will read books, it helps them educationally and socially. When kids read books, they can extend their vocabulary and make their writing better. As kids will read books, they can discuss the book with their peers or relatives and books can help you be happy as "You are never lonely when you have a book to read." • 9. The Controversy: The Banning Of Books In Schools Every year, hundreds of books are challenged, banned, and/or removed. According to American Library Association, more than 11, 300 books have been challenged, banned, or removed in schools and libraries across the country since 1982. The reasons why books are banned were discussed during an interview between Time For Kids and the director of ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom, James LaRue. "Books are banned because they fall under one of these categories of controversy: Religion, Sexual Content, Profanity, or Race." (LaRue, 2016). Many books that have been banned, at one point in time, fall under one these categories. Some more well–known books included: The Holy Bible, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Harry Potter has been in the 1990–1999 and 2000–2009 "Frequently Challenged Books" lists and currently is on the "Frequently Challenged Children's Books" list." (bannedbooksweek.org). "When it came out, some people said the book was about Satan and promoted witchcraft." (LaRue, 2016). This reasoning cause parents to file complaint to schools asking them to remove the books from their libraries. Some school even had to require a permission slip from the children's parents. Now not all parents were like this. Some parents did not see the comparison with magic as Satanic but as another fantasy book like The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. Other parents thought the censorship was absurd and a few of them took actions to voice that opinion. For example: Counts v. Cedarville School District. In this case, Cedarville school board voted that the Harry Potter books would require a permission slip if a child wish to check it out. This vote infuriated some parents so much that they took it court. The parents argued that this vote was against the First Amendment and won the case requiring all libraries in that district to get rid of the permission slips. Even though the book series has ended, there is still controversy over it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Importance Of Censorship In Literature According to author Mette Newth, forms of censorship can be traced back to as early as 399 BC when officials "sentenced" Socrates "to drink poison" as a punishment "for his corruption of youth and his acknowledgement of unorthodox divinities." From this point, Newth goes on to note that uncensored free speech "was a challenge" for early religious figures. As the leaders watched seemingly dangerous ideas pour into their once pure world through literature and verbal stories, "censorship became more rigid, and punishment more severe." However, regardless of the efforts put forth, these leaders could not hold back the changes to come, and the world progressed. Attempts to censor the words put into the world eventually spread from primarily religious leaders, the government, and even to citizens with no authority whatsoever. Over time, censorship has increased to some degree in terms of literature, but the people should not have to tolerate any form of censorship. Regardless of any reason for it, censorship, specifically book banning, proves itself unnecessary and the decision of what art or information anybody intakes should remain up to the consumer themselves. When censorship began, literature suffered all of the initial impact. As printing technology advanced and leaders lost complete control over what information people omitted into the world, Newth states that "the printed book [b]ecame a religious battleground." However, the censorship of book quickly went far past ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Banning Book Research Paper Madyson Pierce and Mckenzie Everhart Ms. Sutor English II December 16, 2015 I Know Why There Are Flowers In the Attic Over the past forty years, there have been banned books that have been created by some of the most famous authors that we know today including V.C. Andrews and Maya Angelou. One might wonder why a children's book such as, Winnie the Pooh, could ever be banned? This classic book children all around the world enjoy, unfortunately can not be enjoyed in the small town of Tuszyn, Poland because Pooh is half dressed and he does not have a specific gender (Graef). The history of banning books, the process of banning books, and the reasons for banning Flowers on the Attic and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings are all questions some might ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Flowers in the Attic was banned for several reasons; incest between the mother, Corrine and father, Chris, which is Corrine's half uncle. The sexual intercourse contents between the daughter, Cathy, and the son, Christopher. Many schools and libraries have banned this book for both those main reasons. Other reasons were because of the little food provided from the grandmother, Olivia. She also locked Cathy, Carrie, Cory, and Christopher in the attic. "Maybe, maybe even a week, no longer, possibly much less time I just don't know exactly" (Andrews, 41). The mother promised she would come back, but she left them in the attic for almost four years, and she came sometimes to check on the children, but she was too caught up in making her dad write her in his will that she no longer cared for her children. The incest between Corrine and Chris caused lashes on her back from her mother, Olivia. "I stared at the ladder of bloody welts on Momma's back" (Andrews, 76). The grandmother is completely dedicated to the bible and therefore when the grandmother figured out what the mother had done, she showed the children what she would do if they did the same as their sinful mother. So when someone writes a book they know it will not please everyone. However, do any authors ever think, "Not only can my book be ill–received, but it might even get banned." Now what does it mean for a book to be banned? Well it means that reading said book is not allowed either by school, state or even country. To enforce the banning libraries and bookstores will not have the books available for people to check out. When Julia describes her activities with the government she says, "Hours and hours I've spent pasting their bloody rot all over London." Both their language in this scene is vulgar and Julia's is seen as a bigger surprise because workers of the government or citizens are not supposed to speak in that manner, especially about the government. However, since both of them dislike the government it is through their language that they can further rebel. Sometime later in the same hiding spot they had met, Winston and Julia have a moment of intimacy. This is one of the worst acts of rebellion against the government since being intimate can lead to forming a relationship. An organization called Banned Books Week, is trying to take a stand on this situation, by banning these books. These books have impacted the students negatively, to where they're making bad decisions. Children are naturally curious about things. If they hear or read something, they're more likely to try it. Putting themselves into harm's way. Children are exposed to graphic elements, profanity, violence, negativity, and witchcraft. Books should be banned. A banning is the removal of these materials"(Banned Books Week). Books should not be banned. Proponents of book banning argue that they can no longer trust libraries and schools to protect students from controversial material, by banning books they are protecting students from these inappropriate and controversial material, and they say some books are offensive to certain groups. Specifically, "rather than banning [a] book for it's sexual content, a better solution would be for parents to put such subjects into perspective for the children who may want to read the book" (Rich). Some parents think that banning books is the only to deal with their children around touchy subjects, when, in reality, sitting down and talking with their children would have been not only easier, but more effective, too. Books are banned for a multitude of reasons, many of which most people do not agree upon. For instance, there is "a biased, non–standard scale of what random people perceive as wrong or unsuitable" in which determines whether or not a book is banned (Yung). What some parents might consider horrifyingly inappropriate, others might consider a necessary lesson for the education of their child. Promoters of book banning say that they are protecting children's innocence, but book banees only do what they do because they're afraid, afraid of new things and afraid of letting their kids grow up. In the words of accredited author and Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award recipient, Judy Blume, "I believe that censorship grows out of fear, and because fear is contagious, some parents are easily swayed... • 37. Essay On Banning Books One of the most aggravating things a parent can do in the eyes of a teen is to tell them they cannot do something. There is always a lure to the forbidden. So when a parent discovers a book that they want to keep out of their child's hands, the one thing the child is going to want to know is what is in that book. Banning books, however, is not a productive form of protection. Books should not be banned for their content as this action takes away from student's education and limits them (cop). The banning of books is done to keep a book and its contents away from public viewing. She argues against the way that schools shield students from real world issues, such as the events that target humans who are viewed as unequal and suffer because of unfair treatment (Lopez). Ken Petrelli, librarian for American Library Association, quotes author Judy Blume in Petrelli's article "Banned Books Week:" Blume states that parents "want to believe that if their children don't read about it, their children won't know about it. And if they don't know about it, it won't happen" (qtd by Petrelli). Books open the eyes of students and help them comprehend past and existing world issues. We have the freedom of speech, so why take away or censor our freedom to simply read and consume literature? Fahrenheit 451 Research Paper The world created by Ray Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451 mostly relates to today's society in that both societies have banned books, which leads people to become dependent on technology; This dependence prevents people from being a part of the community and thinking for themselves. However, the extent Bradbury portrays the insensitivity towards violence creates an extremely dangerous world, whereas today's society is more aware and sensitive to violence. Beatty explains the job description of a fireman changed because they are supposed to preserve the happiness of the people. They burn books because the ideas that books represent can offend people and make a person feel as if another is superior to them. By comparing the firemen to executors, the firemen are killing the ideas and people that a book represents just as an executor kills a person. Another example of how today's society is starting to resemble the society portrayed in Fahrenheit 451 is when Yale professor, Erika Christakis, was criticized for sending an email asking students not to change themselves on a whim that they might offend someone . The Stirrings had returned, and he felt a little guilty and embarrassed about the pleasurable dreams that came to him as he slept," (Lowry 130). So, this community calls our sexual dreams Stirrings. Another place the reader might see why this book needs to be banned is during the Ceremony of Twelve when they are assigning the jobs. On this specific page they are giving Asher his job (Lowry 55). Lowry is attempting to say that in the future the government will essentially be picking our jobs. Those who are for banning books would say that this would be a dystopia, it will not ever be that way. The reader also might notice why The Giver might be banned is for it's darkness. The reader notices this when Jonas receives his first memory of war. In chapter fifteen Lowry writes about one of Jonas' first memories of war (Lowry). Obviously, the imagery gets a little gruesome. For example, "Jonas heard a voice next to him. 'Water,' the voice said in a parched, croaking whisper. • 73. Essay On Book Banning Book banning first became prevalent in America in the early to mid–nineteenth century. It was a way to stop content that had been labeled sensitive or harmful from reaching its intended audience. The first noted public challenge was Charles Darwin's On the Origin of the Species which included a description of his theory that humans and other creatures could have evolved without the guiding hand of a divine power, threatening many religious beliefs at that time. This led to the book being banned in several states, including Connecticut and Tennessee. Over the next few decades, many books would be challenged and banned; there would be protests and several court cases that make it to a national level. Today, very few books are actually banned, however a great many are challenged for their content that adults find too explicit or sensitive for their children. This past week was Banned Books Week, a time where many Americans come together to read and discuss the topic of banned books, why they were banned, and if it was really necessary. Banning books only started because adults wanted to keep young, impressionable minds away from opinions that did not match theirs. From tweeting about their breakfast to live blogging about their opinions on a national debate, every thing can be set free into the world. Which is why, in 2011, The Stop Online Privacy Act swooped in with the desire to call copy right in fragments to a halt, mainly backed by people in high stances in large corporations. SOPA's made desire was to stop fan made art, stories, videos, songs, and parodies. SOPA gave the US Department of Justice the right to control US Internet providers, and force sites like Youtube to delete all material that contained copy right in fragments. This would basically wipe out the entire Internet, because copy righted material would be completely unavailable unless purchased. And in a country with 46.5 million people living in poverty, the chance to succeed slims drastically ("Poverty"). Many people actually apposed SOPA, and its companion PIPA. • 97. Arguments For Banning Books Throughout time, countless great children's books have been published and then loved by many. To name a few, Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. What do these three books have in common? They were all published as children's books, then kept out of their hands for numerous reasons. Parents and teachers claimed these books were unfit for children's reading. They either introduced topics that were not open to them yet or went against their lifestyle. All around the world, great books are being kept from children for doltish reasons. They are being censored, then banned from their eyes. Taking this literature from them is ruining their childhood; it is preventing children from learning about the world and being ready for it. Censoring in children's books needs to become less harsh or else they are going to grow up in a sealed world. For years now, censoring has been limiting the public's freedom in literature, films, media, and plenty of other categories. A big section being censored today, that troubles a lot of people, is children's literature. Books are the most common thing to be censored, especially children's. They continue to ban books across the world, meant to be enjoyed, for reasons they call valid. A popular excuse for banning books is the diversity displayed in them. People should be allowed to read whatever they choose. "The ability to read, speak, think, and express ourselves freely is a right, not a privilege" (Celebrate). Standing up for what people believe in is something they're taught to do at a bright, young age; making sure people are capable of reading the literature they want is one of the biggest controversies. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many parents monitor what their child is reading. When something is brought home that they don't agree with, this is when the anger comes out. Every parent believes the library's policies should be set "by the people" (Berry). Parents believe when a book is "threatening" towards their child it should immediately be removed from all shelves and forbid from being read by any other students. This situation happens quite often, but in realization no child should be told what they are allowed or not allowed to read by another student's parent. Some parents have even began to call them "challenged" books because they believe the term is too harsh, and sounds too much like censorship. Once again the term fear manifests itself; parents are extremely afraid of what their child can find in between the pages of a book. Many of the times the parent will not read the book, but rather read the premise and decide from there. Parents do not realize that the book they are reading could be the most important books that child or teen could ever read. "Words and ideas... will help them fight their monsters" (Finan). Unfortunately, many books have been banned from school libraries all across the United States for their messages or the themes they possess. While these books could be read out of school hours, they have been banned from school libraries or reading centers. While there are some aspects I do not agree with, I do, however, believe this is a good policy because it preserves the innocent minds of readers from inappropriate or unsuitable content. As a child, I have enjoyed Disney's rendition of Alice in Wonderland. Jess is the character that comes from a poor background in a household that doesn't respect him (Paterson, all). Leslie is the more kind character that influences Jess with her personality, even though she does not believe in churchly teachings. May Bell believes that Leslie's beliefs will condemn her to hell. However, challenges are not merely an expression of a point of view; on the contrary, it is an attempt to remove materials from public use, thus restricting the access to others. Even if the motivation to ban or challenge a book is well intended, the outcome is unfair for everyone else. Censorship denies our freedom as individuals to choose and think for ourselves. For children, decisions about what books to read should only be made by the people who know them best–their parents! (Letter to the Editor).
