My magazine was aimed at fans of the British music genre Britpop, particularly male teenagers and young adults who grew up with or were born during the height of Britpop in the 1990s. The magazine was also targeted towards the working class, Britpop's main audience during that time period. Key design elements included using darker colors like grey alongside Britpop's signature red, white and blue colors. A new artist was featured on the cover to appeal to younger audiences while still highlighting iconic Britpop bands. The low price point of £1.99 was intended to be affordable for the working class target demographic.

for your media product?

2. My Magazine was intended to be aimed at those who are fans of the
musical genre Britpop.
I was mainly aiming at a male dominated audience - when I handed out my
questionnaire, I handed out 8 of the 10 questionnaires to males. I also was
aiming towards a teens/young adult audience, mainly people who grew up
with the music or where born during its height. This is why I only handed 1
to a person outside of my age bracket.
My questionnaire helped greatly to deciding what my magazine would
have and what the audience would be like:
• Males - I used darker colours, like grey, to contrast the ‘Britpop’ colours
of Red, White & Blue. The use of the Union Flag colours create an
identity for the magazine, so people would recognise it as ‘Britpop’.
• Teens/Young Adults - I used a new artist on the front cover, to give the
genre something new and energetic, while the magazine was still full of
all the Britpop/Indie icons such as Oasis and Blur.
• The Working Class - Britpop’s main audience during the 1990s was
generally the working class. I used a simple layout (similar to Rolling
Stone) while adding more unique items to bring out features that the
lower class will appreciate. I gave the magazine a price of £1.99 as that
would make it very cheap for a music mag, but will also be affordable
for the Working Class.
Many of the big bands that were associated with the Britpop/Madchester
movement (such as Oasis, Pulp and The Stone Roses) came from mainly
working class backgrounds. The songs that these bands created helped
them connect to the ‘common’ people on the street. A lot of songs (for
example, Common People by Pulp or Parklife by Blur), were aimed at the
working classes and their way of life. These band gained massive
popularity, with most of them winning multiple awards (Oasis won 29
major awards, Blur won 15 awards and Pulp won 19 awards) and having a
major impact on a lot of bands who have taken inspiration from them.
