A Beach That Has Changed Analysis
A Beach That Has Changed When being a kid your favorite place is seen however you want it to be seen no matter how unrealistic it is. When
going again to the same place as a teenager, you don't see the sane anymore your mind is programmed to see the realism. When I was little I
noticed every beautiful thing in this one place, but when arriving at the same place as a teenager that beauty disappears and reality is what I see
and feel. When going to the beach as a child the enjoyable physical descriptions, activities and experiences changed when going back to the beach as
a teenager. When I went to the beach as a kid it was exciting, hot, and beautiful and now going as a teenager it's too hot, boring, and scary. To begin
with when I was 12 my family wanted to go to South Padre Island, and I really wanted to go to the beach. As a child any chance of getting in the water
and playing with sand was paradise for me. My family wanted to rent a condo and the perfect place was Isla Grand. When finally done unpacking and
getting our swimsuits on we walked to the back of the place. The sun shining on my eyes as they glistened from seeing such a beautiful view. I stopped

Running as fast as I can through the sand loving the feeling of warmth on my feet. Finally I had my feet at the edge of where the water hits. The
anticipation was building up as the wave hit my feet, I knew it would feel cold but warm at the same time. When finally getting in the water
happiness overcame me, this is where I knew wanted to be. I could feel the seaweed on my legs, which tickled a bit and I loved it. The way the sun's
rays felt on my body was soothing. What made me most happy when coming to the beach was playing volleyball with family. At the time I knew that
nothing could change the way I felt about the

Hilton Head Island
The beach in Hilton Head Island in South Carolina is certainly my favorite place to go. It is the greatest place to be. Maybe it is the sense of relief
with you see the alluring island or maybe it is when you roll down your window smelling the salty ocean water with the warm breeze hitting your
face, making your hair fly all over the place. Relaxing, sunbathing, and swimming are all reasons why Hilton Head Island is my favorite place.
As I lay in the red, thin material, swaying hammock next to the roaring ocean water, I begin to relax. I listen to huge waves hit against the rocky
wall that connects the grassy ground to the light blue ocean water. The longer I lay there the wind begins to pick up causing the hammock to sway
more and more almost touching the tall, wide trees that are holding it up. The sounds of the rushing waves and the warm misty breeze causes my
eyes to get very heavy almost as if I have a weight on my eyelids weighing them down. I usually end up falling asleep until my family wakes me up by
forcefully shaking me. After I get up we drive down to the pier, so they can play in the sand while I sunbathe in the fire hot sun.
Sunbathing is another reason Hilton Head Island is my favorite place to be. When I sunbathe I always lay around 20 feet away from the water so it
never reaches me. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I walk down to the water and slowly let the water get to my sandy toes washing it off each wave at a time. The temperature of the water is exactly
like bath water, never is a shock to get in. The water is as blue as the sky and almost as clear as Hawaii's water. I walk out into the water and the
farther I go out the harder it is to stand up because the powerful waves sweep me off the sandy ocean bottom. The challenges of the waves makes
swimming so much better. After awhile I get tired and decide to get out of the water. I dry the water off my wet body by a warm beach towel that has

The Characteristics of a Sandy Shore at Pallarenda Beach,...
The characteristics of a sandy shore at Pallarenda beach, Townsville, North Queensland.
Introduction:
The sandy shores of beaches can be considered as a very harsh environment to live in (Ted Klenk, 1999). Survival in such a habitat requires an
organism to withstand strong wave and current action, tidal rise and fall, unstable substrate, heavy predation and wide variations in salinity and
temperature (The Otter Island Project). Any organism found in this type of harsh environment is specialized and highly adapted (The Otter Island
Project).
Fine, sandy beaches often occur in areas with light wave action (California's Ocean Resources, 1995). While a more coarse sand is found with heavy
wave action (California's Ocean Resources, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Discussion:
The profile of Pallarenda beach as shown in figure 1 is very typical of a North Queensland, medium energy beach. The lack of organisms present
higher up the beach was due to the harsh conditions at low tide. Ghost Crabs, Ocypode quadrata, can survive these areas as a result of their
adaptations (The Otter Island Project). The ghost crab burrows during the day and feeds at night to avoid the heat of the day (The Otter Island
Project). These crabs can actively take up moisture from damp sand to wet their gills (The Otter Island Project).
The anoxic layer is very deep above the areas with coarse sand. This is in accordance with what was mentioned in the introduction. The coarse grained
sand has more water passing though it to increase the

Punta Cana Fun
Visiting a different island in the Caribbean each summer has always been a family tradition of mine. The first few years never failed to make me
fall in love with each and every one of them, but once my family suggested on visiting Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, the eighth year, my
thoughts were not so hyped. Going to the same sea each year can get old and boring. When we finally got to Punta Cana, falling in love was too short
of a term to describe what I felt for it. As soon as we landed we were greeted with songs and happiness all around. The nobleness lingering in the
atmosphere, coconut smell in the air, and architecture went beyond my imagination.

laid out like mini cities, completely inclusive in every way, with many of them offering so many amenities that it made it impossible to partake of
everything available,
such as scuba diving, fishing, golfing, wind–sailing, enjoying a day at the spa, or a day out on a yacht.
This is the ultimate destination for those who simply want to drop their bags, turn off the cell, and ignore the rest of the world for a little while. We

Coastal Ecosystems In Florida
Florida's coastal ecosystems are one of the greatest assets that Florida has today. An ecosystem is an interacting and interdependent community made up
of both living and non–living parts. Ecosystems include the air, water, soil, and sunlight as well as all the living organisms present, from the simplest
amoeba to the plants
and more complex animals that are all a part of the system. There is no size
limitation for ecosystems, the entire earth can
be considered as a one ecosystem. And so with more coastline than any other state in the contiguous United States, it is a source of economic,
environmental and recreational benefits. People come from all over the world to visit the beautiful Florida beaches.1 Coastal uplands are composed of
substrate and vegetation influenced primarily by coastal maritime processes such as erosion, deposition, salt spray, and storms with storm surges.
Coastal uplands also consist of mesic or xeric communities restricted to barrier islands and near shore with woody or herbaceous vegetation. Other
communities that can be found with in south Florida's coastal upland environments include beach dunes, coastal berms, coastal grasslands, coastal rock

Sand Mining Pollution
Frac–Sand Mining: Killing Natural Habitats and Polluting the Environment
I remember walking on the rocky shore of an endless, blue lake and feeling the fresh breeze shield me from the brutal, summer heat. My Uncle and
I used to take out a Piragus canoe and paddle across the lake's vastness as I peered down into the glassy water and clearly saw the castle rock
formations. The fish quickly swam in and out of their hiding places like swarms of people making their way to work on a busy New York morning.
The lake breathed with life and movement. Rolling green bluffs encircled the lake, creating a storybook–like haven. So many beautiful woodlands and
waterways like this continue to disappear due to the frac sand mining industry. Towering machinery replaces billowing trees with piles of red, earthy
mounds, and the heavy clanking of metal on metal echoes across the land. Frac mining and fracking scars the land around it indefinitely. I am not an
expert on environmental habitats or the mining industry, but my love for the outdoors and fishing drives me to investigate the harmful effects of frac
sand mining. The frac sand mining industry exploits the remaining wilderness of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and surrounding states by selfishly
polluting the environment; taking millions of gallons of water from freshwater resources, and disturbing essential minerals from the ground, thus
prohibiting future habitat growth and creating significant health issues due to a surplus of dust.

Setting For Treasure Island On The California Coast
As I ease into the yellowish water, sandy running shoes around my neck and small dog wriggling under my arm, I become aware of a faint and
unfamiliar sour musky odor. This better be worth it.
I expect it will be. One–time Sonoma County resident Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have developed the setting for Treasure Island on the California
coast. For many of my generation and older, that is the tale that launched a thousand ships, pirate vessels all, in dreams of sudden and incalculable
wealth. Decades later, any hope of sudden material wealth has slipped away like fog under a midmorning sun. But a greater wealth hinted at in the
book remains, even if it is only attainable during the odd vacation week every year – the wealth of enriching experience and wonder.
Which brings me back to the Sonoma coast and Gualala Point Regional Park. The park is a County facility, and offers one of the shrinking number of
public beaches where dogs are welcome. Provided they are on six–foot leashes, that is. Such a diminishment of the dog's world is nothing compared to
that of the snowy plover's. The plover is a six–inch sandpiper, nearly invisible in its shoreline environment, whose very existence is uncertain due to
development of California's coast and trampling of beaches and dunes and cryptic eggs in the sand. A dog's merry chase may seem harmless – no bird
caught, ever – and yet still doom another chance for a tiny bird's future.
So we were happy to be on the beach with our dogs,

Cancun Mexico Research Paper
I am drawn to the thought that vacationing is a way of making everlasting memories, in addition to encountering many diverse cultures around the
world.
Traveling to Cancun, Mexico with my family was one of the best experiences of my life. Our resort included swim up bars, a multiple bedroom
suite, and six pools across a huge beach side complex. While in Cancun, my mom and I learned the culture by bargaining through shops in the market.
We spent nearly five or six hours in one day trying to bargain for deals and sort our way through the shops. I remember one time she got a wind chime
priced at twenty–five dollars, down to ten. Experiencing a memory like this taught us both that we can find happiness by experiencing new, unique
cultures around the world.
As I cruised to the islands of Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic and Aruba, I realized the beauty of traveling. Sailing across open waters, and
stopping on white sand beaches was something I could never forget. Breathing in the fresh air was nothing short of amazing. Experiencing these
crystal clear waters was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and something I could only get from exploring new parts of the world. ... Show more content

My mom and dad have always told me to do what makes me happy, and worry less about the cost. Ever since I was ten years old, my family has decided
to take a vacation every year right before school starts. We have been to Disney, on two Caribbean cruises, and Mexico twice. I realize now that it
was one of the smartest decisions my parents could have made for us kids. Growing up and being able to see places such as Aruba, Florida, and Lake
Houses in Wisconsin is something that I will always be grateful for; visiting these places has taught me that there is so much more that comes with
vacationing besides having

Civilian Conservation Corps: Saving The Lighthouse
It became clear that if nothing was done, the lighthouse would soon be engulfed by the ocean. Civilian Conservation Corps, under the leadership of
the National Park Service, began looking for a solution to save the lighthouse. It was believed that pumping in sand dunes was an inexpensive and
effective solution at the time. In the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps began building a sand dune barrier along Hatteras Island but today's
scientists reason that while the dunes helped with minor storms, they did not stop the rising sea level and beach erosion. Sheet pile groins were also
installed to slow down the beach erosion. In 1966 over 300,000 cubic yards of sand was taken from the Pamlico Sound and placed in front of the
lighthouse, but the

The Fraser Island in Australia
Fraser Island is a popular tourist attraction in Australian just 300km north of Brisbane and only 15 km of the coast of Hervey Bay.
Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and is world heritage listed.
The island is around 120km long and cover a significant area of 1,840km2
Fraser Island is known for its spectacular long white beaches, sand cliffs, rain forests and a number of freshwater lakes that are crystal clear.
The indigenous people of Fraser Island are the Butchulla people or their traditional name K'gari.
However due to the European settlement many of the traditions and the way of life the aboriginals live were destroyed either intentionally or through
plain ignorance.
The Butchulla people were governed by a Council of Elders and of course the generations and generations of traditions that have been passed down.
The council included a number of mature men, but only the elders had voting rights. The council of elders were responsible for allowing visitors into
their tribal lands, they gave them permission to enter and told them when they had to leave. The Council made sure all rules (social and environmental)
were met and was responsible for the totem system.
The totem system was when each member of the tribe was given a totem that represented a plant or animal. You were not allowed to eat, harm or hunt
your totem or your family's totem. The only exception was during war, unique ceremonies or when you crossed into non–tribal lands. The totem system

A Small, Quaint Beach
A small, quaint beach is located in Texas, and is known by the name of Galveston. It has a very vivid and interesting backstory, more so than cities
twenty times its size. Galveston Beach was originally home to Akokisa and Karankawa Native Americans during 1528. Robert Cavelier La Salle,
a French explorer, claimed the land for King Louis, naming it St. Louis in the late 1600s. Later, in 1786, Galveston was named for Bernardo de
Galvez; he was a Spanish general and governor of colonies, and he sent explorers to chart the land (from the Gulf of Mexico of the Texan coast to
New Orleans but Galvez died before he ever set foot on his island. However, the first settler was European, a pirate known by the name "Jean Lafitte,"

Long shore currents continuously transport sand south along the coast. Harsh winter weather pulls sand from dunes and upper beaches, depositing it
onto offshore sand bars and reducing beach width, while gentler wave action during milder summer weather acts to restore the shoreline (NOAA,
2013.) The structure of barrier islands is determined by the movement of sand in the littoral zone, which is the land–facing side of the island. In August
of the year 1933, a hurricane created an inlet south of Ocean City, Maryland. The inlet separated the island from Maryland (U.S. National Parks
Service, 2012.) After the hurricane, a permanent system of artificial jetties was built for navigation purposes, and has drifted westward considerably
from the original landmass; without the jettisons, it would have silted back because of longshore drift which is a geographical process that consists of
the transportation of sediments, such as clay, silt, sand, and shingle along a coast at an angle to the shoreline, which depends on prevailing wind
direction, amongst other factors, This process occurs in the littoral zone, and is on in or close to the surf zone. The artificial jettisons has created
wider beaches and better fishing access, but also has caused erosion problems on Assateague Island. As an added note, Assateague island is well known
for their white sand

Beach Renourishment Effective
Beaches are one of the main attractions for vacationers. The thrill of laying out under a giant umbrella reading a great book, or being able to surf the
waves and get some serious tan lines brings people from all over. Those beautiful beaches not only bring in a large amount of revenue from tourists, but
also have a lot of money being pumped into them. Beach renourishment, also known as beach replenishment, is the reason so many beaches still remain
in good condition. The questions that need to be asked are what exactly is beach renourishment? Where has beach renourishment been used? Is it
effective in preventing beach erosion and is it cost effective? Beach renourishment is described as "the process of dumping or pumping sand from

Beach Selected : Glenelg Beach
Beach selected: Glenelg beach
History: According to Glenelg SA (2015), Glenelg beach is only 12km from the centre of Adelaide, Glenelg is a pleasing entertaining beach resort set
amongst the sandy shores of the bay of Holdfast. In 1836, Glenelg was the site of South Australia's original mainland settlement. Processes that affect
Glenelg Beach:
There are multiple factors that affect Glenelg beach and other Adelaide beaches.
The drift of sand that is going north is created by the winds and waves. Although, sand can move in different wind conditions. This sand movement is
also known as a littoral drift. Big quantities of sand is eroded due to the cause of considerable damage to beach, dune and nearshore areas because of a
coastal storm. Therefore, Glenelg beach cannot be considered stable just like other Adelaide beaches. Before the settlement of the Europeans, Glenelg
beach had been withheld by costal dune erosion. Although due to the subsequent development occurring on the top of the dunes, a replenishment
process has to be carried out artificially.
Big quantities of sand have either been put away and not used or removed from Glenelg beach due to development on the coast. Multiple Adelaide
coasts have been built upon an extensive system of dunes on the coast or, alternatively, due to the need of providing land for housing and Adelaide
airport, dunes were used to infill backswamps of the coast. Along the Lefevre Penisula, land was reclaimed to create the suburb of North

Costal development has affected Glenelg as a large quantity of sand has been removed from the beach system as a result of coastal development. All
along the coast of Glenelg suburbs were build on an extensive system of the coastal dunes or alternatively dunes were used to infill coastal back
swamps to provide land for housings. Stormwater and wastewater discharges affects Glenelg as most of Adelaide's stormwater is discharged to the
coast through the Patawalonga, Torrens and Port River systems. "85 smaller outfalls that discharge stormwater are within the dunes or directly onto the
beach." (Adelaide's Living Beaches Strategies, 2005) One of the four wastewater treatment plants is located in Glenelg and has discharged effluents

Widow's Cave Epilogue
"I bet he's back at the row boat where we were going to meet. Come on." Matthew trotted off toward the beach side of the island.
On the beach they could see Harry's fresh footprints, but they led back up toward the waterfall end of the island. Amber pointed out the strange tail and
claw prints in the sand. This time there was a second set, following Harry's prints inland. Matthew and Amber looked at each other in fear. They broke
into a run.
"Harry! Harry!" Amber shouted as she ran.
This time they avoided the trees, and followed around the edge of the island where Harry and the creature's footprints let. The sand ended in rocky
coastline that rose steeper toward the island's high point. Soon they could see the waterfall ahead.
"Widow's Cave is nearby," Matthew panted. "Should I look in there?"

"I don't think so," Harry said quietly. "This creature can run really fast. I don't think I can outrun her again."
"Well, what are you going to do?" Amber panicked. "Climb a tree?"
Harry looked up the rocks from where he crouched. There was one lone tree about ten feet up. "That's not a bad idea," he mused.
Matthew approached behind Amber. "Hey, that looks like a Komodo dragon!"

Brevard's Barrier Island: A Case Study
Background: The roughly 39.4 miles of Brevard's barrier island show archeological evidence of human habitation for thousands of years. However, it
wasn't until modern times, that humans built permanent structures and roads on these geological structures that, by natural design, respond to wind,
currents and rising sea level by migrating landward or drowning (Duran Vincent & Moore, 2015). This concern is a manmade problem due to our
construction on a geologically unstable island. Our beaches are formed by the erosion of offshore rocks and promontories. The fine size crystals of
quartz and other material are carried onshore by waves and deposited on the beach. Numerous methods have been attempted, with varying degrees of

In the realm of attempts to stave off coastal erosion and the impact of sea level rise, there are generally two categories of accepted proposals: soft and
hard solutions.
Soft solutions are commonly considered more environmentally friendly, but tend to be less effective than hard solutions are:
Planting sea oats, beach grass and other native vegetation to stabilize the dune line. These efforts are effective only in areas where the dune line remains
in public or county owned areas. Hotels and private residential structures have frequently been built on the dunes. Thus there would be gaps in
vegetation planting lessening the overall effectiveness. Also, this mitigation strategy slows the drifting of dunes, it does not prevent water caused
erosion or destruction of the dune lines resulting in repeated replanting.
Lining the shore with biodegradable jute bags: These bags capture wave energy but still allow sand to drift naturally along the coast. There is concern
that these jute bags can cause damage to the local ecology and are unsightly when decomposing which can have a negative impact on

A Beach That Has Changed Analysis

  • 1. A Beach That Has Changed Analysis A Beach That Has Changed When being a kid your favorite place is seen however you want it to be seen no matter how unrealistic it is. When going again to the same place as a teenager, you don't see the sane anymore your mind is programmed to see the realism. When I was little I noticed every beautiful thing in this one place, but when arriving at the same place as a teenager that beauty disappears and reality is what I see and feel. When going to the beach as a child the enjoyable physical descriptions, activities and experiences changed when going back to the beach as a teenager. When I went to the beach as a kid it was exciting, hot, and beautiful and now going as a teenager it's too hot, boring, and scary. To begin with when I was 12 my family wanted to go to South Padre Island, and I really wanted to go to the beach. As a child any chance of getting in the water and playing with sand was paradise for me. My family wanted to rent a condo and the perfect place was Isla Grand. When finally done unpacking and getting our swimsuits on we walked to the back of the place. The sun shining on my eyes as they glistened from seeing such a beautiful view. I stopped just to analyze this beautiful beach ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Running as fast as I can through the sand loving the feeling of warmth on my feet. Finally I had my feet at the edge of where the water hits. The anticipation was building up as the wave hit my feet, I knew it would feel cold but warm at the same time. When finally getting in the water happiness overcame me, this is where I knew wanted to be. I could feel the seaweed on my legs, which tickled a bit and I loved it. The way the sun's rays felt on my body was soothing. What made me most happy when coming to the beach was playing volleyball with family. At the time I knew that nothing could change the way I felt about the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Hilton Head Island The beach in Hilton Head Island in South Carolina is certainly my favorite place to go. It is the greatest place to be. Maybe it is the sense of relief with you see the alluring island or maybe it is when you roll down your window smelling the salty ocean water with the warm breeze hitting your face, making your hair fly all over the place. Relaxing, sunbathing, and swimming are all reasons why Hilton Head Island is my favorite place. As I lay in the red, thin material, swaying hammock next to the roaring ocean water, I begin to relax. I listen to huge waves hit against the rocky wall that connects the grassy ground to the light blue ocean water. The longer I lay there the wind begins to pick up causing the hammock to sway more and more almost touching the tall, wide trees that are holding it up. The sounds of the rushing waves and the warm misty breeze causes my eyes to get very heavy almost as if I have a weight on my eyelids weighing them down. I usually end up falling asleep until my family wakes me up by forcefully shaking me. After I get up we drive down to the pier, so they can play in the sand while I sunbathe in the fire hot sun. Sunbathing is another reason Hilton Head Island is my favorite place to be. When I sunbathe I always lay around 20 feet away from the water so it never reaches me. ... The temperature of the water is exactly like bath water, never is a shock to get in. The water is as blue as the sky and almost as clear as Hawaii's water. I walk out into the water and the farther I go out the harder it is to stand up because the powerful waves sweep me off the sandy ocean bottom. The challenges of the waves makes swimming so much better. After awhile I get tired and decide to get out of the water. I dry the water off my wet body by a warm beach towel that has been sitting in the sun all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Characteristics of a Sandy Shore at Pallarenda Beach,... The characteristics of a sandy shore at Pallarenda beach, Townsville, North Queensland. Introduction: The sandy shores of beaches can be considered as a very harsh environment to live in (Ted Klenk, 1999). Survival in such a habitat requires an organism to withstand strong wave and current action, tidal rise and fall, unstable substrate, heavy predation and wide variations in salinity and temperature (The Otter Island Project). Any organism found in this type of harsh environment is specialized and highly adapted (The Otter Island Project). Fine, sandy beaches often occur in areas with light wave action (California's Ocean Resources, 1995). While a more coarse sand is found with heavy wave action (California's Ocean Resources, ... The lack of organisms present higher up the beach was due to the harsh conditions at low tide. Ghost Crabs, Ocypode quadrata, can survive these areas as a result of their adaptations (The Otter Island Project). The ghost crab burrows during the day and feeds at night to avoid the heat of the day (The Otter Island Project). These crabs can actively take up moisture from damp sand to wet their gills (The Otter Island Project). The anoxic layer is very deep above the areas with coarse sand. The first few years never failed to make me fall in love with each and every one of them, but once my family suggested on visiting Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, the eighth year, my thoughts were not so hyped. Going to the same sea each year can get old and boring. When we finally got to Punta Cana, falling in love was too short of a term to describe what I felt for it. • 20. Sand Mining Pollution Frac–Sand Mining: Killing Natural Habitats and Polluting the Environment I remember walking on the rocky shore of an endless, blue lake and feeling the fresh breeze shield me from the brutal, summer heat. My Uncle and I used to take out a Piragus canoe and paddle across the lake's vastness as I peered down into the glassy water and clearly saw the castle rock formations. The fish quickly swam in and out of their hiding places like swarms of people making their way to work on a busy New York morning. The lake breathed with life and movement. Rolling green bluffs encircled the lake, creating a storybook–like haven. So many beautiful woodlands and waterways like this continue to disappear due to the frac sand mining industry. Towering machinery replaces billowing trees with piles of red, earthy mounds, and the heavy clanking of metal on metal echoes across the land. Frac mining and fracking scars the land around it indefinitely. I am not an expert on environmental habitats or the mining industry, but my love for the outdoors and fishing drives me to investigate the harmful effects of frac sand mining. The frac sand mining industry exploits the remaining wilderness of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and surrounding states by selfishly polluting the environment; taking millions of gallons of water from freshwater resources, and disturbing essential minerals from the ground, thus prohibiting future habitat growth and creating significant health issues due to a surplus of dust. ... • 22. Setting For Treasure Island On The California Coast As I ease into the yellowish water, sandy running shoes around my neck and small dog wriggling under my arm, I become aware of a faint and unfamiliar sour musky odor. This better be worth it. I expect it will be. One–time Sonoma County resident Robert Louis Stevenson is said to have developed the setting for Treasure Island on the California coast. For many of my generation and older, that is the tale that launched a thousand ships, pirate vessels all, in dreams of sudden and incalculable wealth. Decades later, any hope of sudden material wealth has slipped away like fog under a midmorning sun. But a greater wealth hinted at in the book remains, even if it is only attainable during the odd vacation week every year – the wealth of enriching experience and wonder. Which brings me back to the Sonoma coast and Gualala Point Regional Park. The park is a County facility, and offers one of the shrinking number of public beaches where dogs are welcome. Provided they are on six–foot leashes, that is. Such a diminishment of the dog's world is nothing compared to that of the snowy plover's. The plover is a six–inch sandpiper, nearly invisible in its shoreline environment, whose very existence is uncertain due to development of California's coast and trampling of beaches and dunes and cryptic eggs in the sand. A dog's merry chase may seem harmless – no bird caught, ever – and yet still doom another chance for a tiny bird's future. So we were happy to be on the beach with our dogs, ... Traveling to Cancun, Mexico with my family was one of the best experiences of my life. Our resort included swim up bars, a multiple bedroom suite, and six pools across a huge beach side complex. It was believed that pumping in sand dunes was an inexpensive and effective solution at the time. In the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps began building a sand dune barrier along Hatteras Island but today's scientists reason that while the dunes helped with minor storms, they did not stop the rising sea level and beach erosion. Long shore currents continuously transport sand south along the coast. Harsh winter weather pulls sand from dunes and upper beaches, depositing it onto offshore sand bars and reducing beach width, while gentler wave action during milder summer weather acts to restore the shoreline (NOAA, 2013.) The structure of barrier islands is determined by the movement of sand in the littoral zone, which is the land–facing side of the island. In August of the year 1933, a hurricane created an inlet south of Ocean City, Maryland. The inlet separated the island from Maryland (U.S. National Parks Service, 2012.) After the hurricane, a permanent system of artificial jetties was built for navigation purposes, and has drifted westward considerably from the original landmass; without the jettisons, it would have silted back because of longshore drift which is a geographical process that consists of the transportation of sediments, such as clay, silt, sand, and shingle along a coast at an angle to the shoreline, which depends on prevailing wind direction, amongst other factors, This process occurs in the littoral zone, and is on in or close to the surf zone. In 1836, Glenelg was the site of South Australia's original mainland settlement. Processes that affect Glenelg Beach: There are multiple factors that affect Glenelg beach and other Adelaide beaches. The drift of sand that is going north is created by the winds and waves. Although, sand can move in different wind conditions. This sand movement is also known as a littoral drift. Big quantities of sand is eroded due to the cause of considerable damage to beach, dune and nearshore areas because of a coastal storm. Therefore, Glenelg beach cannot be considered stable just like other Adelaide beaches. Before the settlement of the Europeans, Glenelg beach had been withheld by costal dune erosion. Although due to the subsequent development occurring on the top of the dunes, a replenishment process has to be carried out artificially. Big quantities of sand have either been put away and not used or removed from Glenelg beach due to development on the coast. Multiple Adelaide coasts have been built upon an extensive system of dunes on the coast or, alternatively, due to the need of providing land for housing and Adelaide airport, dunes were used to infill backswamps of the coast. • 42. Brevard's Barrier Island: A Case Study Background: The roughly 39.4 miles of Brevard's barrier island show archeological evidence of human habitation for thousands of years. However, it wasn't until modern times, that humans built permanent structures and roads on these geological structures that, by natural design, respond to wind, currents and rising sea level by migrating landward or drowning (Duran Vincent & Moore, 2015). This concern is a manmade problem due to our construction on a geologically unstable island. Our beaches are formed by the erosion of offshore rocks and promontories. The fine size crystals of quartz and other material are carried onshore by waves and deposited on the beach. Numerous methods have been attempted, with varying degrees of success to combat... In the realm of attempts to stave off coastal erosion and the impact of sea level rise, there are generally two categories of accepted proposals: soft and hard solutions. Soft solutions are commonly considered more environmentally friendly, but tend to be less effective than hard solutions are: Planting sea oats, beach grass and other native vegetation to stabilize the dune line. These efforts are effective only in areas where the dune line remains in public or county owned areas. Hotels and private residential structures have frequently been built on the dunes. Thus there would be gaps in vegetation planting lessening the overall effectiveness. Also, this mitigation strategy slows the drifting of dunes, it does not prevent water caused erosion or destruction of the dune lines resulting in repeated replanting. Lining the shore with biodegradable jute bags: These bags capture wave energy but still allow sand to drift naturally along the coast. There is concern that these jute bags can cause damage to the local ecology and are unsightly when decomposing which can have a negative impact on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
