Motivating Employees
1. I HATE WORKING WITH YOU!
(OR HOW TO STOP STRESSING AND MOTIVAT E
ALMOST ANY EMPLOYEE)
2. WE ALL WORK WITH PEOPLE WE DON’T LIKE
THIS COULD BE:
• A Coworker
• An Employee (if you manage others)
• A Manager
• Your Boss
• A Temporary Worker
• Literally Anyone
3. UNFORTUNATELY WE DON’T ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE
• We get assigned to teams
• We don’t get to pick our
bosses
• We are often told to either
deal with it or quit
4. CONSEQUENCES OF NOT SOLVING EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION
(FOCUS ON MANAGING OTHERS IN THIS PRESENTATION)
• Disengaged employees
• Less motivation from employees
• Can affect entire team negatively
• Affects outcome of projects
• Ultimately reflects poorly on you (Again, as a manager)
6. 4 STEPS TO MOTIVATE EMPLOYEES
1. FIGURE OUT YOUR FEELINGS
• Realize any frustration and anger are your reaction
• Question why you react the way you do
• Change your thinking (No one can make you feel a
certain way unless you let it)
7. 4 STEPS TO MOTIVATE EMPLOYEES
2. SPEND MORE TIME WITH EMPLOYEES
YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE AROUND
• Sounds counterintuitive, but step in their shoes…
• Try to to create more opportunities to be together
• Get to learn what makes them tick and motivates them
• Learn about their personal lives
8. 4 STEPS TO MOTIVATE EMPLOYEES
3. IF IT’S THEIR HABITS, FOCUS ON THE
POSITIVE
• Redirect attention to what you do like that the person does
• Employees will be motivated by hearing how the team is
counting on their strengths
• Reframe negatives in a positive manner
9. 4 STEPS TO MOTIVATE EMPLOYEES
4 .DISRESPECTFUL EMPLOYEES NEED EMPATHY
( E . G . B U L LYING, INTIMIDATION, DISRESPECT, E T C . )
• Bad behavior is often self-protective (e.g. Low self-esteem)
• Dig deep; Can’t be motivated unless you get to the root
• Should help get a better idea of what motivates them
10. Remember:
You don’t have to be best friends, but you need to be
able to work with them!
