ULTRAFINE PARTICLES
 Ultrafine particles (UFPs) are particulate
matter of nanoscale size (less than
100 nanometers in diameter).
 There are two main divisions that categorize types of
UFPs.
 UFPs can either be carbon-based or metallic, and
then can be further subdivided by their magnetic
properties.
ULTRAFINE PARTICLES
 UFPs are both manufactured and naturally
occurring.
 Hot volcanic lava, ocean spray, and smoke are
common natural UFPs sources.
 UFPs can be intentionally fabricated as fine
particles to serve a vast range of applications in both
medicine and technology.
 Other UFPs are byproducts, like emissions, from
specific processes, combustion reactions, ETC.
ULTRAFILTRATION
 Ultrafiltration is a variety of membrane filtration in
which forces like pressure or concentration
gradients lead to a separation through a semi-permeable
membrane.
 Suspended solids and solutes of high molecular
weight are retained in the so-called retentate, while water
and low molecular weight solutes pass through the
membrane in the permeate.
 This separation process is used in industry and research
for purifying and concentrating macromolecular (103 -
106 Da) solutions, especially protein solutions.
ULTRAFILTRATION
 Typically, UF membranes will remove high
molecular-weight substances, colloidal materials,
and organic and inorganic polymeric molecules.
 Because only high-molecular weight species are
removed, the osmotic pressure differential across the
UF Membrane surface is negligible. Low applied
pressures are therefore sufficient to achieve high flux
rates from an Ultrafiltration membrane.
 Flux of a membrane is defined as the amount of
permeate produced per unit area of membrane
surface per unit time. Industrially flux is expressed
as cubic meters per square meters per day.

ULTRAFILTER VS CONVENTIONAL FILTER
 Ultrafiltration, like reverse osmosis, is a cross-flow
separation process.
 In cross-flow separation, therefore, the membrane
itself does not act as a collector of ions, molecules, or
colloids but merely as a barrier to these species.
 Conventional filters such as media filters or cartridge
filters, on the other hand, only remove suspended
solids by trapping these in the pores of the filter-
media.
 These filters therefore act as depositories of
suspended solids and have to be cleaned or replaced
frequently.
RECOVERY
 Recovery of an ultrafiltration system is defined as the
percentage of the feed water that is converted into
the permeate, or:
R= (P/F) × 100
Where: R = Recovery
P = Volume of permeate
F = Volume of Feed
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
 Ultrafiltration system operation and maintenance is
similar to that of reverse osmosis systems.
 Membranes should be cleaned when the system
permeate rate drops by 10% or more.
 Feed flow is critical to the operation of ultrafiltration
systems. A drop in feed flow may be due to a problem
in the prefilter (if any), with the flow control valve, or
with the pump itself.
 When the system is shut down for more than two
days, a bacteriocide should be circulated through the
membranes. At restart, permeate should be diverted
to drain until all the bacteriocide is removed.

 Fruit juice concentration and clarification
 Dialysis and other blood treatments
 Desalting and solvent-exchange of proteins (via
diafiltration)
 Laboratory grade manufacturing

ULTRAFINE PARTICLES  Ultrafine particles (UFPs) are particulate matter of nanoscale size (less than 100 nanometers in diameter).  There are two main divisions that categorize types of UFPs.  UFPs can either be carbon-based or metallic, and then can be further subdivided by their magnetic properties.
  • 3. ULTRAFINE PARTICLES  UFPs are both manufactured and naturally occurring.  Hot volcanic lava, ocean spray, and smoke are common natural UFPs sources.  UFPs can be intentionally fabricated as fine particles to serve a vast range of applications in both medicine and technology.  Other UFPs are byproducts, like emissions, from specific processes, combustion reactions, ETC.
  • 4. ULTRAFILTRATION  Ultrafiltration is a variety of membrane filtration in which forces like pressure or concentration gradients lead to a separation through a semi-permeable membrane.  Suspended solids and solutes of high molecular weight are retained in the so-called retentate, while water and low molecular weight solutes pass through the membrane in the permeate.  This separation process is used in industry and research for purifying and concentrating macromolecular (103 - 106 Da) solutions, especially protein solutions.
  • 5. ULTRAFILTRATION  Typically, UF membranes will remove high molecular-weight substances, colloidal materials, and organic and inorganic polymeric molecules.  Because only high-molecular weight species are removed, the osmotic pressure differential across the UF Membrane surface is negligible. Low applied pressures are therefore sufficient to achieve high flux rates from an Ultrafiltration membrane.  Flux of a membrane is defined as the amount of permeate produced per unit area of membrane surface per unit time. Industrially flux is expressed as cubic meters per square meters per day.
  • 9. ULTRAFILTER VS CONVENTIONAL FILTER  Ultrafiltration, like reverse osmosis, is a cross-flow separation process.  In cross-flow separation, therefore, the membrane itself does not act as a collector of ions, molecules, or colloids but merely as a barrier to these species.  Conventional filters such as media filters or cartridge filters, on the other hand, only remove suspended solids by trapping these in the pores of the filter- media.  These filters therefore act as depositories of suspended solids and have to be cleaned or replaced frequently.
  • 10. RECOVERY  Recovery of an ultrafiltration system is defined as the percentage of the feed water that is converted into the permeate, or: R= (P/F) × 100 Where: R = Recovery P = Volume of permeate F = Volume of Feed
  • 11. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE  Ultrafiltration system operation and maintenance is similar to that of reverse osmosis systems.  Membranes should be cleaned when the system permeate rate drops by 10% or more.  Feed flow is critical to the operation of ultrafiltration systems. A drop in feed flow may be due to a problem in the prefilter (if any), with the flow control valve, or with the pump itself.  When the system is shut down for more than two days, a bacteriocide should be circulated through the membranes. At restart, permeate should be diverted to drain until all the bacteriocide is removed.
