many prisons become overcrowded which makes it even more difficult to rehabilitate the prisoners within them. If more money is channeled into

treatment in the 20th century in the United States.
According to Henninger and Sung (2014), in the late 1940s the Minnesota Model was introduced as a new method to treat alcoholism. The Minnesota
Model included mutual respect for participants instead of shame and degradation. One of the first facilities to utilize the Minnesota Model was Willmar
State Hospital in Minnesota. The Willmar State Hospital staff eventually developed the model which was based on insisting that treatment include a
multidisciplinary and holistic approach.
The staff at Willmar also believed that professionalization of addiction treatment was necessary to appropriately treat patients. This progression of

I.Hypothesis
It commonly believed that over time, the effects of drug related cues increases the efficacy of relapse. To this end, the researchers are looking to key
brain chemicals to aid in the therapeutic treatment of drug addiction. A main concern is how can drug–related cues be counteracted or reduced in
patients prone to relapse. In one study, investigators found that "drug use and relapse involves learned associations between drug–associated discrete
and contextual cues and drug taking..." (Bossert, Marchant, Calu, & Shaham, 2013). This is further corroborated by data suggesting with repeated drug
use, an attentional bias occurs (Jasinska, Stein, Kaiser, Naumer, & Yalachkov, 2014). As a result, drug cues take over perceptual, cognitive and
memory processes. This produces a priming effect, essentially putting the addict in a state of "drug–seeking" readiness. We predict that when presented
with certain contextual cues associated with drug use, they will trigger a drug–seeking response in drug addicted individuals when compared to the
control. We also theorize that time of day will have an effect on the intensity of the drug–seeking response.
II.Methodology
A.Subjects
We will recruit 30 individuals currently seeking drug treatment forcocaine addiction for a two–day study, ages 18 to 50, from local Narcotics
Anonymous (NA) groups. The recruits will be from a cross section, at various stages of their drug treatment. Current dependency will be determined by

determining whether drug treatment court programs actually work. To accomplish this task, I will be reviewing three empirical studies to evaluate how
effective the program truly is. The first empirical study that I will be reviewing is the Orange County Juvenile Drug Court (OCJDC) located in Orange
County, California between 1999 and 2006 (Fradella, Fischer, Kleinpeter, & Koob, 2009). This study consists of 232 teenagers (164 males and 68
females) with the age of these individuals ranging between 12 and 17 years (Fradella et al., 2009). In this study, researchers attempt to understand why

Disease Models
During a session with Juan Medina we discussed the disease models so Juan would have a better understanding of the various types of addiction. We
discussed the immoral conduct of addiction and how addiction is freely chosen by the individual, and how it's considered a sinful behavior. This
model also suggests that the individual has the capacity to make decisions, and are able to control their behavior. Juan is hurting himself and his
mother through the use of drugs, but does not seem to have control of his addiction since he started using at age 12, and has progressed to harder
drugs such as heroin. Although Juan seems to have the capacity to make decisions, even with his learning disability there seems to be sociocultural
factors that are preventing him to make the right decisions for himself and his family. We then discussed addiction as a maladaptive behavior and
both Juan and I seem to agree that this disease model describes Juan and his current situation and addiction. Maladaptive behavior is a learned
behavior, he's not committing a sin, nor is he out of control because he is able to control his use of heroin at this time. Juan has limited contact with
his family and only has his mother and girlfriend as a support system. Juan is unable to provide a stable income for his family because he has not
