The Great Homework Debate
Before we move forward in determining what is effected by way of homework we need to examine
the history that this debate is going through. The great homework debate has gone thru great
changes since its inception. During earlier times children in the lower grades, grades one through
four, received very little if any homework through the year, however the older grades received in
upwards of three hours per night. As years went on we've seen this debate go from a positive factor
for academics to a negative factor. There been many academic and child health organizations that
have led various different movements on this debate. Just since the 1950s we have seen this debate
take on numerous schools of thought from one extreme to the other. Often

What Is The Essay 'Arguing On The Internet' By Poza
In the essay "Arguing on the Internet" the author tells of his inexperience in political debate, and
how it shaped his future. (Poza, 2005) His story starts out by telling the readers, about the first time
he posted a comment on the internet about gun control. Poza, was simply sharing his personal
thoughts on the subject and what he got in return was profanity, disgust and the desire to persuade
others by debating effectively. Poza shares some of his thoughts on learning to debate with others.
First, you must know your subject well, take time to study and role play with the debating issue.
Second, sort through your thoughts and pick your strongest points to argue, and throw out any weak
points, they are not worth the debate. Lastly Poza, says "don't ever admit you are wrong". (Poza,
2005) Story telling dates back to the beginning of time, and is an important method that has been
used to share vital information. Stories have been used to pass on tribal information, values, ... Show

Using a humorous opening to a story can put the audience at ease and trust the presenter. (Osburg,
1995) Laughter is a great form of gaining the attention of the audience and allows the speaker to
make a connection. Practicing the storytelling process allows the speaker to make appropriate
changes and helps build confidence in the speech process. An audience will connect better with a
speaker that is confident in the message being presented. (Osburg, 1995) Next, the speaker should
take special care to allow the words to flow steadily. Using words such as "um" "a" and "but" will
make the presenter sound less confident and therefore loose the attention of the audience. (Osburg,
1995) Last, the speaker should prepare according to the audience, take into consideration whether
the audience is young, old, disables, hard of hearing or gender dominate. (Osburg,

Abraham Lincoln And Stephen Douglas: The Great Debates
The debates between Republican, Abraham Lincoln and Democrat, Stephen Douglas, were known
as the Great Debates. There were three important parts that is worthy of taking note about these
debates, these debates include the cause, the content, and the conclusion. First we see the causes of
the debates. Both Lincoln and Douglas were running for a place in the United States Senate in
Chicago, so the debates were held in Chicago. Leading up to the debate both candidates were
rallying supporters and discussing many issues. The most important issue was whether Illinois ...

Now, as mentioned before, the topic of debate was slavery, more specifically slavery expansion.
Throughout the debates Douglas tried to get Lincoln to confess that he was an abolitionist, therefore
explaining his opposition to slavery and basically defeating his opponent. But Lincoln claimed that
if slavery expanded, the people are going against the Constitution which states that all men were
created with equal rights no matter the race, intellect, size, moral development, or social standing.
Douglas's opening speech questioned the audience whether they would want an African–American
to have the same rights as a white man, as if it were something that would be terrible. To which
Lincoln responded with the statement that all men were created equally. Douglas and Lincoln also
discussed the Dredd Scott case, Douglas appealed the Dredd Scott decision because it deprived
certain people of rights. Lincoln then challenged that another Dredd Scott case would expand
slavery even to free states. Lincoln said Douglas did not care about whether slavery is voted up or
down and challenged the Freeport Doctrine because it alienated Southerners. This proved to hurt
Douglas because the Southerners would now vote for

The Melting Pot That It Is Made Up Of Many Types Of People...
American being the melting pot that it is, is made up of many different types of people that have
different political priorities. During an election year, these priorities are discussed even more often
and more heatedly. Newscasters light this debate fire daily, as do politicians. Some of these issues
are absolutely essential to the American political life and should be discussed and evaluated in order
to make America great. Even when parties are on opposite sides of an issue, they can agree that
priorities need to be established and evaluated (Gallup, 2016). In evaluating today's society both
economic and social issues top the list of priorities. Economic issues top the list of priorities for
most American. Unemployment is a word that Americans hear on a daily basis. Currently the 62.7%
of adults who are able to work are currently working and three major factors are driving the
decrease in workers. Due to the large number of "baby boomers" who are retiring, which is healthy
and understandable, we have a decline in the number of adults who work. Another positive reason is
due to a larger number of college students and graduate students. The cause that is worrisome is the
people who have "given up" on finding work. The Wall Street Journal estimates that about 2.6
million of the roughly 92 million American adults who don 't work want a job but aren 't looking for
one (CNN, 2016). Politicians and citizens alike recognize this as a political concern. Foreign trade is

Speech : Speech And Debilitate
Speech and debilitate I am afraid of many things; I fear heights, large crowds, death even fucking
moths, all of which I have justifiable reasons for but my biggest fear the fear of public speaking is
nonsensical. I know it is a ridiculous fear there is no inherent danger involved in speaking publicly
it's no different from a personal conversation just louder but for some reason I can't get over it and
trust me I've tried. In my senior year of high school, I was given a throw away assignment
something the teachers used to fill the time. My English teacher Mrs.Woods had every student pick
one song and describe examples of rhyme, simile and metaphor used. It was a simple assignment
something a fifth grader could do with ease. The only problem for me was that we had to do it in
front of the entire class. At the time I was by no means shy, I considered myself a master of small
talk (whop dee doo), easily able to strike up conversation with any of my peers. So you would think
that public speaking would come just as naturally. I thought so, I really hadn't experience the fear
beforehand. So when it was my turn to present my ingenious findings on the use of figurative
language use in Elton Johns "Candle in the wind" I was confident. I stood up from my seat smiling,
walked up to the chalk board in my blue baggy jeans and XL t–shirt and opened my mouth only to
find the sound of silence. What just happened? My throat tensed up, my mouth was suddenly dry
and my body was unstable. I

Citizens of Canada are protected by the laws established within the past five decades including; The
Code of Conduct, The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom and the Youth Criminal Justice Act
with many more followed. In Winnipeg, Manitoba a teen at the age of 16 had murdered 20 year old
David Michael in his head on September 25, 2011. (Turner, James, 2013, n.d) After trial the boy's
name was revealed to the public after Brenda Keyser, the Court of Queen's Bench justice had

The method of using factual guilt would allow more convicts to be sentenced with innocent citizens
also being punished as where the current method of legal guilt will protect innocent people from
being sentenced but allowing more suspects getting away with the law. With Sinclair's case, the due
process of legal guilt protects one's right till proven guilty was applied and executed as intended
without having conflicts with the law, evidence was provided and a violation in the law was found
thus confirming his sentence. The methodology has proven to work in this case and in several other
cases as well. If factual guilt was used, the chances of Sinclair getting the same sentence would be
considerably high. The reason why legal guilt would be better is to prevent people from being
punished unnessarily. Also the Code mentions how one's rights should not be abandoned under any
circumstances and is innocent till proven guilty. Arguments can be made that factual guilt can be
more beneficial, preventing murders like O.J. Simpson escaping from the law, making communities
more safe. The drawback of this is the violation of section 11 in the Charter of rights and freedom
preventing people feeling confident in their law enforcement and increasing their chances of being

The Great Debaters: The Wiley College Debate Team Essay
Introduction Conflict is inevitable in any personal relationship or among members of any group.
While we encounter many types of conflict in our lifetime, we often look for ways to avoid conflict.
So, why do we run away from dealing with our conflict? It is often because many of us fear the
conflict will escalate into a situation we will not be able to sustain. "As conflicts escalate, they go
through certain incremental transformations. Although these transformations occur separately on
each side, they affect the conflict as a whole because they are usually mirrored by the other side. As
a result of these transformations, the conflict is intensified in ways that are sometimes exceedingly
difficult to undo" (Pruitt, and Kim 89). We ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

James Jr. has seen the raving effects of racism all around him, and longs to live in a future where no

the Wiley College debate team was faced with in the film was during a debate against Oklahoma
City University. The topic selected for argument was whether Negroes should be admitted into the
same colleges as Whites. This particular subject is one the students at Wiley College were all too
familiar with. The setting of the debate would begin the escalation of the conflict between the two
schools. The intensity of the conflict began when Oklahoma City University refused to hold the
debate on campus and would only accept the challenge to go up against Wiley College if the
competition was held at another location. In a clip provided by YouTube the arguments begin with

Great Afterlife Debate
In the "Great Afterlife debate," Michael Shermer and Deepak Chopra embody two different opinions
concerning the existence of afterlife. Shermer points out that the concepts of afterlife and near–death
experiences are illusion of the brain. Chopra disproves that afterlife is a concept from the scientific
perspective in the course of refuting the arguments of Shermer. In what follows, this essay is an
agnostic point of view for support neither of the arguers.... (THESIS......)
There are two separate parts of the debate in respect of the issue of afterlife. In the first place,
Michael Shermer argues that afterlife is not real on the basis of six main evidences from Deepak
Chopra's book, Life After Death: Burden of Proof. He considers that the belief of Chopra "is almost
entirely based on faith, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shermer claims that the idea of afterlife or paradise are shaped and reshaped by the human mind to
refute the arguments forwarded by Chopra. By using the report about out–of–body experiences,
Shermer points out that it is impossible to have a world after death or any out–of–the–body paradise.
To strengthen his argument, Shermer restates the argument that there is no afterlife since "[paradise]
is in our thoughts and in our actions. It is in our lives and in our loves. It is in our families and in our
friends. It is in our communities and in our world. It is in the courage of our convictions and in the
character of our souls" (The Great Afterlife, p15). On the other hand, Deepak Chopra refutes the
arguments made by Shermer and afterlife is about consciousness in the second place. He argues that
afterlife is not from imaginations and it is a state of awareness by citing the modern near–death
experiences are of concrete nature. From the scientific and metaphysical perspectives, Chopra
claims that "Hamlet was right to call death an undiscovered country, not because the living cannot
reach it but because heaven's geography keeps shifting" (The

Essay on The Great Debate on Global Warming
The cause of global warming has been a debate between scientists and experts for numerous years.
In fact, Svante August Arrhenius, a Swedish chemist, first predicted global warming would occur in
1896 (Harris 16). Researchers who agree it is naturally caused insist the greenhouse effect has many
natural causes. Others agree that the cause of the Earth's increase in temperature is just part of a
continuous cycle. These researchers argue that solar activity plays a huge role in the issue of global
warming. Therefore, based upon the myth of the greenhouse effect, cyclical patterns, and research
on solar activity, global warming is not a man–made dilemma. When greenhouse gases trap heat in
the atmosphere, similar to the way greenhouse panes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The greenhouse effect will continue naturally. Methane makes up thirteen percent of greenhouse
gases (Hopwood & Cohen 2). Wetlands are accountable for most of the natural methane
concentrations polluted into the air because they contain bacteria that produce this gas during
decomposition (Sources and Emissions 5). For this reason methane is often called swamp gas
(Hopwood & Cohen 6). As part of their digestive process, termites release methane. Also, Oceans,
rivers, and estuaries are populated with marine plankton and fish that create methane when they
digest too(Sources and Emissions 5). Cows breathe out methane when they burp (Harris 10). Natural
hydrates, mud volcanoes, gryphons, steam vents, wildfires, wild animals and bubbling hot springs
expel methane in nature(Sources and Emissions 6). The causes of methane emissions are limitless,
but it is evident that it is not a manageable greenhouse gas. The final greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide,
is "laughing gas." It is colorless, has a sweet sent, and makes up six percent of the total greenhouse
gases. Naturally, it is discharged from oceans and bacteria that populate in soils. It can also be found
in human and animal waste. Since 1750, nitrous oxide levels have been on the rise. Although nitrous
oxide does not contribute to the greenhouse gases as much as carbon dioxide and methane do, it is
important to suppress this gas because it remains in the atmosphere for a very long time (Hopwood
& Cohen 7).

How Did The Great Debate Pros And Cons
The Great Debates The political debates amongst Nixon and Kennedy assume a gigantic part in TV
history, and the historical backdrop of America. It formed the way that we run our political races
today. The politics debate being aired on television enabled individuals to see the character and
activities of both candidates. During these televised debates, various viewers saw Kennedy's self
assurance and how well put together he was. But then on the other hand, Nixon had a harder time
and gave off a frightful vibe to the viewers who were watching the debated. Individuals who
watched it on TV felt Kennedy won the debate, while the individuals who tuned in to the radio felt
Nixon won. This point is important, essential, and identified with television

ballots across the country. Medical Marijuana questions will be offered to voters in four states;
Arkansas, Florida, Montana and North Dakota. Five States will be voting on whether or not to allow
legal recreational marijuana laws. Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada. Twenty–
four states currently have medical marijuana laws. This current list dates back to 1996, with the first
state being California. Four states have passed recreational marijuana laws. Washington and
Colorado in 2012, followed by Alaska and Oregon in 2015. Only nine states throughout the United
States have prohibited use of any kind, recreational or medical. Looking at these numbers, one
would assume that the trend to passage is on the positive. If this is true, why the deep divide in poll
numbers in regard to this question? Following the state wide passage of recreational use in Colorado
in 2012, one county in Colorado, Pueblo county has now gathered enough signatures to allow the
following question: whether to terminate recreational marijuana sales and operations. Could this be

The Great Trophy Debate
For many kids around the world, childhood sports are a cherished and blossom lasting friendships.
Some kids choose to participate and others just sign their children up. Recently, "The Great Trophy
Debate" has sparked a question of whether or not all participants should receive trophies or not.
Currently, many sport organizations have taken about traditional trophies and substituted
participation trophies for all. O'Sullivan argues that participation trophies are not really trophies
because the more trophies given out, the less worth each will have. O'Sullivan argues, "Supporters
of such trophies state that trophies motivate kids to play, yet research shows that extrinsic
motivation on its own can be harmful, not helpful." ("The Great Trophy Debate.") O'Sullivan means
that traditional trophies inspire young athletes to compete with excellence. A trophy signifies an
accomplishment. Yes, it is wrong and harmful for an athlete to be solely motivated by winning a
trophy. O'Sullivan argues, that is equally as harmful to remove this reward and act like a losing team
is just as good as a winning team. Without competition, what are sports?

Participation trophies are wrong because they diminish the value of trophies and wreck the
competitive spirit of youth sports. Yes, some parents and kids take youth sports too seriously.
Participation trophies are not the answer to solving this issue. Participations trophies are unjust
because they do not reward those who deserve it and do reward those who do not deserve it. A
utilitarian would also see these trophies as an awful use of resources. Wouldn't the result be the same
if youths were all given participation trophies or they all were not given anything? The minimum
number of trophies optimizes the effect it has on the athletes. This is the best use of resources and

The military is becoming an increasingly common job to go into after high school. What most

The military will take you from being a soft putty into a rock solid sculpture. They stress discipline

Obamacare: The Great Debate The Obama Presidency is known for many things: two wars,
economy crashes, government shutdowns and, yes, the infamous Obamacare. Throughout the last
six years, President Obama's agenda was set towards passing a major healthcare reform bill: The
Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA), more commonly known as Obamacare.
Passed on March 23, 2010 under considerable opposition, ACA is widely considered to be the

Its size and complexity makes it is very difficult to implement and even more difficult to understand.
Even Nancy Pelosi (D–CA), Speaker of the House, echoed this air of uncertainty while advocating
for passage of the bill in 2010 when stating "But we have to pass the bill to learn what is in it." Once
the bill became law, arguments arose when discussion began on the specific details, regulations, and
strategy for implementation. There are endless angles to approach this law, each with a mix of fact,
bias, and prediction. Most viewpoints agree with the primary goal of Obamacare, to make healthcare
affordable for everyone, but differ on the balance between the roles that government and private
insurance companies should play in the solution. All the ifs, ands, or buts can cause chaos, as
nothing of this size has ever been passed before. No matter the opinion or bias, it all comes down to
the age–old battle over power and money. SUBSIDIES Obamacare, in its original form, was
intended to function primarily at a state level. The deal was that each state would set up an online
exchange where US citizens could log in to their state's "exchange" to select a government–
sanctioned healthcare insurance plan that was right as well as affordable. The Federal government
raised taxes and worked Obamacare into its budget, figuring to disperse money to the states for
funding of the program; this money is called a subsidy. The subsidies would be sent to the

The Policy Of The Federal Government Should Enact Based On...

Debate as a Life
Background History of Debate In my sophomore year of highschool, I joined the policy debate club.
Policy debate was an intensive academic activity where teams of two would engage in discussions
on the best government 's policy to enact. There would be two teams in each debate round:
affirmative or negative. The affirmative would have to propose a policy that the U.S federal
government should enact based on their constructed advantages for implementation. After that
speech, the negative team would have to make arguments, for examples, kritiks, disadvantages, and
counterplans, to refute the implementation of the plan. Throughout an almost two hour debate round,
both teams will try to speak almost 500 words per minute in order to respond to arguments. As one
can imagine, debate is fast paced activity that boils down to which team can best defend their
arguments. Within in this debate round, there would be a judge to decide the winner. Flow:
Difference between Exotelic and Autotelic
The concept of flow in occupational science is described as an autotelic experience where an
individual is fully engaged under a high challenge activity. Often times, one may lose sense of time
due to high level of concentration. My engagement with debate did not begin with an autotelic
experience, but I was introduced by my friends to a debate camp that paid students $400 dollars
each to learn the structure of policy debate. This

Body Cameras Argument Analysis
We live in a world where we communicate with many individuals in different ways. A debate is a
structured argument, in which it conducts two sides of an argument where individuals are either

by the first negative speaker. When given the debate topic, my group and I were told that we will be
debating the issue on body cameras, in which we resolve that the body camera should or should not

It is important to understand what makes a great debate topic in order to win the argument. When

Dan Rothwell, Rothwell mentioned an important fact, which should be done by anyone who does
any sort of speech, he had stated that "oral style works most effectively when language is clear and
understandable" (Rothwell,2014). I agree with this statement because I allow my nervousness to
take over, in which it causes me to stutter on my words, pause for a few seconds and sometimes
even wanting to give up because of the embarrassment. It is important for your style of language to
be understood and clear no matter the way you do. Of course, you cannot do a speech in which you
use word slang, which is something else that Rothwell touched upon in the reading. Moreover, a
debate becomes more effective by the way you connect with your audience, for example like pathos,
ethos and logos. However, when during my debate, I believe my team and I brought the emotions of
pathos. In which Rothwell define pathos as "Although logic and evidence can be very persuasive,

audience with real evidence, when we contact the police department, which caught the audience
attention and wanting to keep listening. As well as for logos, which is defined as "building argument
based on logic and evidence" (Rothwell, 2014), I believe my teammates and I provide great

The Great Debate About College Roommates
The Great Debate about College Roommates In most cases, for people who once attended college
they either consider it the best years of their life or a horror show. They may feel this way because of
the experiences they had, classes they took, or the people they met, like perhaps their roommate. In
the New York Times article, "A College Education Should Include Rooming with a Stranger", Anna
Altman explains the effects of having a roommate in college. Anna Altman claims college freshman
already have a lot to adjust to in their first weeks, including the new living arrangements in the life
of the dorms and meeting a new person that now shares the same home as them. With the help of
preference options when applying for dormitory housing, the simple aspects of assigning two

However, Altman adds that even though colleges try their best to make the match between
roommates as smooth as possible, it does not always work out that way for everyone during their
first year away from home. Altman suggests, "...that approach is no longer sufficient". She quotes
Natasha Singer, also a reporter for the New York Times, saying "...the problem of getting stuck with
an incompatible freshman–year roommate can be expensive for the college. Moving students around

indirect. Some of the horror stories told by alumni are about the struggle they went through to find
the right roommate after many failed attempts of changing dorms and testing uncharted waters with
a new peer. Some of these unfortunate people consider the struggles too great and quit college all
together. In turn, colleges lose tuition money

The Great Debate John O'sullivan Analysis
What do you think life would be like if everyone got a trophy for just going to school or work? That
would be crazy! That is not how life works, so why should kids get a participation trophy for just
showing up.That is a waste of an organization's scarce funds. Also, the more trophies given out the
less each one means. Youth athletes should be allowed to fail. On the other hand, some people
believe it is worth a few bucks to give a kid a smile. Participation trophies are unessential for
rewarding youth athletes in sports. The more participation trophies given out the less each one
means. In section two of "The Great Debate: Do We Need Participation Trophies" by John
O'Sullivan states nothing makes the trophy special if everyone gets one. The trophy is special if
when no–one else gets one except you. When trophies like hardest worker and MVP motivate youth
athletes to work hard because they want one of those trophies. That is what keeps youth athletes
trying their hardest and giving their best. Trophies are not what matters, it is the hard work you put
in that matters. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Melvin B. Tolson's The Great Debates
The Great Debates is a drama that was released in the year 2007, it is based on a real life story of an
African American man named, Melvin B. Tolson. Academy Award winning actor Denzel
Washington plays Melvin B. Tolson in the movie. Melvin B. Tolson was a professor at Wiley
College Texas. In the year 1935, Mr. Melvin B. Tolson, motivates the students to join their school's
first debate team. The team made it all the way up to compete with Harvard in the national
championship, furthermore, Harvard was known as the best. The debate team was a team of four
students, three boys and one girl. However, in this true life movie actor Denzel Washington engaged
in numerous good communication ethics in more than one scene (Washington, Black, Forte, Roth, ...

He continued to tell them that his father was one of the meanest and the most restless slave in that
time. He sternly told them that his father was strip of his clothes with each leg tied to two horse
facing opposite direction. His father was then set on fire, while each horse was whipped, causing
him to ripped apart. Basically he was telling them the slave masters take their minds but kept their
bodies. Therefore, they should keep their minds, especially being young and on the debate team
(Washington, Black, Forte, Roth, Winfrey, Eisele & Porro, 2008). Denzel Washington was graphic
and serious while he was telling the students about his father. However, I believe he had thought
them a good lesson in the dialogue. I believe the moral of the dialogue is to keep your mind
regardless of what may happened in your life. Because if someone control your mind they basically
control your life, for example, the slaves. Nevertheless, Denzel Washington used intercultural
communication ethics which I think was good.
However, in another scene, Denzel Washington employs Public discourse ethics. Public discourse
ethics protects and promotes a place of conversation for diversity of ideas and persons (Arnett, Fritz,
Janie & Bell, 2008). Moreover, Denzel Washington was in a secret and private barn with
approximately fifty five other men, they were African Americans, Hispanics as well as Caucasian.
They seem to be discussing issues that they were facing with the farm bosses, therefore they were

Argumentative Essay: The Great Debate
The Great Debate is about the weather or not to keep The Constitution. Which the Anti–Federalists
didn't want around anymore. But The Federalists had believed that somebody had to have some type
of power to keep all states in control at once. But it had to be ratified by at least 9/13 states to
become a legal. But each side had their own opinions on how the states should be handled.
The Federalists had Supported The Constitution, but didn't think it required a Bill Of Rights. They
Thought it would be better to start from scratch with the Articles Of Confederation. Wanted to limit
the Government with 3 branches of government (Legislative, Judicial, Executive). A stronger central

Great Canadian Flag Debate, the Quiet Revolution and through the occurrence known as

Sixties is the most significant decade in Canada's vast history in terms of transforming or changing

The historical occurrence known as the Great Canadian Flag Debate brought major changes to
Canada. Prior to Canada adopting its current sovereign state flag, a number of big events
encouraged Canadians to think about what it meant to be a Canadian, Canadians began to question
their flag, they wondered if their flag truly represented what it meant to be a Canadian, many people
wanted a new flag of Canada as they felt that their flag did not truly represent what it meant to be a
Canadian. In the year 1958, an extensive poll was taken in Canada, it related to the attitudes that
adult Canadians had towards the flag of their country; of those who expressed opinions, over 80%
wanted a sovereign state flag entirely different from that of any other country, and 60% wanted a
sovereign state flag that would showcase their beloved maple leaf. Some people liked this idea of
adopting a new sovereign state flag as they wanted their flag to be uniquely Canadian, however
some people did not like the idea as they were content with the flag that they had,

Federalism: Two Sides To The Great Debate
Federalism is a type of government that divides the power with the central government, states and
local governments. A federal government is different than a confederation in the way that the states
and local government have more power than the main government. There are also different kinds of
federalism such as; dual and cooperative federalism. In dual federalism, they believe that states and
other local government should have as equal power as the central government. In cooperative
government, they believe that states and other local government should have an equal power as the
central government. One historical example of a debate on federalism was the Great Debate. There
were two sides to the Great Debate, the anti–federalists and the federalists. The Federalists wanted
to ratify the Constitution however, the Anti–Federalists did not. The Federalists felt that this wasn't
necessary, because they believed that the Constitution limited the government not the people.

Full faith and credit addresses the fact that states within the United States have to respect public
acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state. An example of this would–be driver's
license. For instance, if a driver has a driver's license in the state of California but they travel to
Maryland, then Maryland has to honor their driver's license through the full faith and credit clause.
Another example of this would–be marriage laws, if a person is married in one state then it will be
valid in any state in the United States because of the full faith and credit clause. The due process

The Great Debate: Science vs Religion
The relationship between religion and science has been a subject to numerous debates, earning its
place in multiple forums and dominating the news. Disputes arise because science and religion are
two very different disciplines. For instance, science is ultimately based on observation of nature
while religion is largely based on faith. Conflicts between the two have existed for hundreds of years
and will continue to do so, because of their different concepts of "truth". Nevertheless, reaching a
consensus between science and religion is generally impossible and difficult to achieve, because
each are certain of the validity of their own beliefs.
Undoubtedly, cloning is one of the many disagreements between science and religion that raise
many questions when brought up within society. Articles, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, the two do not necessarily repel each other, the meeting point is in a person's perspective.
Religion without science degenerates into superstition, while science without the help of religion
gives rise to materialism and lack of faith. Science, to speak the truth, has only purified and
strengthens the work of religion, whereas religion gives a certain line that prevents science from
becoming inhumane and brutal. The same can be said about the controversial issue of cloning.
Advocates state that cloning improves the overall quality of science and life, while critics stress over
the clone's possible problems dealing with their emotional health and self worth. There is no simple
way to resolve the conflicts between them, and reaching a consensus is generally impossible.
However, the relationship between science and religion can be seen as partners not enemies, as
described by Martin Luther King Jr. when he stated, "Science investigates and religion interprets.
Science gives man knowledge which is power. Religion gives man wisdom which is

The Great Debate : Privatizing Social Security
The Great Debate: Privatizing Social Security The United States' Social Security system was
implemented by Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935 as a part of the New Deal during the
Great Depression "to frame a law which gives some measure of protection to the average citizen and
his family against the loss of a job and against poverty–ridden old age." Although the system has
proven to be one of the most popular programs ever established, its future has been questionable for
some time. According to the Social Security Administration (2008), "People are living longer, the
first baby boomers are nearing retirement, and the birth rate is lower than in the past. The result is
that the worker–to–beneficiary ratio has fallen from 16.5–to–1 in 1950 to 3.3–to–1 today. Within 40
years it will be 2–to–1. At this ratio there will not be enough workers to pay scheduled benefits at
current tax rates" (Social Security Administration [SSA], 2008). This issue concerns many citizens,
especially younger generations, and continues to be a hot topic of debate amongst politicians. Many
ideas have been proposed about how to reform the current system. The most popular of these ideas
is to create an entirely new system consisting of mandatory pension accounts which would allow
individuals to accumulate a balance over time with investment options such as stocks, bonds, or
mutual funds. This argument will show why Social Security should not be replaced by a mandatory
private pension system.

Industrial Hemp: The Great Debate
Industrial Hemp The Great Debate
Introduction
Many knowledgeable people who know and understand the potential of industrial hemp are
convinced that it is one of the world's most perfect products. Its fiber makes rope and cloth which is
very strong and resilient and when used to make paper products, the production is far tidier and
much more efficient than using wood to make paper. Hemp is indeed considered one of the world's
oldest agricultural products and hemp has a history in the United States that includes the fact that the
Declaration of Independence and the original St. James Bible are actually printed on hemp paper.
The list of practical uses is lengthy and impressive, but due to drug laws in the United States the
growing of cannabis for industrial hemp uses is illegal; this has been a source of considerable
controversy in the United States. The uses of industrial hemp and the debate as to whether industrial
hemp farming should be allowed in the U.S. will be reviewed and critiqued in this paper.
Thesis: This paper takes the position that industrial hemp should be legal in America, because it has
been proven useful in myriad applications for many years, because it is not potent for smoking albeit
it's from the same species, because it could create thousands of jobs, and because in the fight against
global warming industrial hemp absorbs four times as much carbon dioxide and can produce as
much as four times the fiber than trees can.

The Great Debate : Essentialism Vs. Dominance
Beep, Beep look out there's a woman on the road. Often time's women are stereotyped as a bad
driver. In the article "The Great Debate: Essentialism vs. Dominance," Courtney Stoker argues that
there is a difference in communication between men and women through two theories. The
Essentialism theory is the thought that men and women communicate differently due to their natural
instincts as the Dominance theory imposes that the difference in communication is due to men's
perceived dominance (Stoker 676). As Stoker compares these theories she makes it clear that neither
had substantial evidence in explaining the differences of gender communication. As Stoker stated,
"But once again, I do not feel as if there is enough evidence to consciously declare one theory
correct" (679). Stoker suggests the two main theories about why men and women communicate
differently are flawed. Stoker is correct that these two theories do not explain every difference of
men and women as they demonstrate behaviors in driving that do not specifically fall into these
theories. First of all men and women drive differently because they show different amounts of
aggression. Aggressive drivers are best known for putting someone else in danger or harm's way
while driving. This type of behavior is found more in men than women while driving. For example,
"When it comes to aggressive driving, however, the majority (54 percent) of drivers cite men as the
most likely culprits of aggressive driving. Compared

The Great Political Debate Ben Franklin once said there is only two certainties in life, death and

penalty are debated topics that each party has a different stance on. Those topics are an area of
government that do not have a consensus. When it comes to taxes, every party has general ambitions

The democratic party relates the issue of abortion in a court case called Roe verse Wade. In this
court case, the US Supreme Court affirmed the legality of a woman's right to have an abortion under
the 14th amendment. As one can see, depending on how you interpret the 14th amendment
determines the outcome of legality. Since the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of the law, the states
must grant the right to abortion, regardless of being a red state or not. Another democratic view on
abortion is that a woman should never have to fear the ability to pay for an abortion. In the
democratic platform for America in 2004 it stated, "we stand proudly for a woman's right to choose,
consistent with Roe v. Wade, and regardless of her ability to pay" (Democratic platform). This is in
opposition of the republican view, as republicans do not want health care providers to provide for
abortions. The democratic view is that all women should have access to an abortion, which is most
likely going to be through health care. Overall, one can see that the democratic view on abortion
differs from the republican viewpoint through the interpretation of the 14th amendment and thoughts

Politics now a days is hard to understand and when we do understand and want to create change it's
hard to get our government to create change. In "The Great Debate: Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine,
and the Birth of Right and Left," Levin tells the story of an unfriendly rivalry between the
progenitors modern conservatism and modern liberalism. In the time Burke and Paine shared – the
late 18th century – philosophical arguments could ignite revolutions, and pamphlets could be as
important as battles. Both Burke and Paine were masters of political rhetoric at a time when political
rhetoric really mattered, and their rivalry still reverberates. In today's society about conflicts
between the police and minority communities in the US, Burk would take a position that the
american government has to change some laws around in order to create equality and justice while
Pain would take a position of starting all over is the way to go to create something better for all. ...

Burke mentions that "the old and tried model will not always work, of course, but when it fails,

expectations that have worked in the past to controlled the injustice happening with our minority
communities but with new generations there's new change to happen because old techniques do not
always work. As "society [is] always changing, its law need to change too"(9) in order to keep a

The debate on Medical marijuana has been a controversial subject mainly because people have an

Politics And Politics In Aristophanes In The Frogs
Aristophanes in The Frogs satirizes politics and political leaders of Athens. During fifth century
there was direct democracy in Athens. The democratic government of Athens rested on three main
institutions, and a few others of lesser importance. The three pillars of democracy were: the
Assembly of the Demos, the Council of 500, and the People's Court. On the other hand, this is a
democracy without equality. The Assembly is basically gathering of Athenian male citizens to vote
for law. At Athens politics was a kind of communication between the classes; for this reason the
primary political skill was rhetoric. Politics was carried on by constantreference from the few to the

It explains why so many plays turn, like the Frogs, on a formal debate. The situation of the play
affects its internal constitution. As drama is analogous to politics, so the dramatic action is
assimilated to political action. For the Athenian audience, the fully expressive mode is competitive
debate.
The Frogs contains the largest number of references to the poet's function as an adviser. The world
of Aristophanes' comedies is mainly one of fantasy, where free men carry private peaces in
wineskins or fly to Zeus on a dungbeetle, women take control of the state, and a slave rides down to
Hades on a donkey(18). But Aristophanes focus in The Frogs is on contemporary politics of real
world. The purpose of The Frogs is to bring reform in Athenian society by satirizing contemporary
politics and political leaders.

the parabasis, where the chorus sometimes speaks in the voice of the poet–producer.

2012 Election: The Great Medicare Debate
Since 1965, Medicare has been attempting to provide low cost, guaranteed access to much needed
healthcare for senior citizens over the age of 65 and other age groups that suffer from disabilities
and terminal diseases. These people represent some of the most vulnerable population groups in the
United States. Most do not work, and rely on Medicare to provide them the access to healthcare they
need. Unlike privatized health insurance companies, Medicare is a social insurance program that is
paid for through federal mandates and tax payer funds. Billions of dollars are spent annually on over
50 million Americans in need (Alonso–Zaldivar 1). The care structure itself is broken into several
main parts: Medicare Part A covers hospital costs, Part B cover most outpatient care costs, and Part
C and D cover prescription drug costs through dealing with other private insurance. Yet, the
upcoming election in November is threatening to change and alter the structure. Each candidate has
his own plan to deal with Medicare; both are trying to reign in the costs of operating Medicare, but
with some elements being obviously more beneficial for Medicare recipients than others. Mitt
Romney is the Republic presidential candidate who wants an overhaul of Medicare in order to keep
costs down. Romney's approach is based off his running mate Paul Ryan's suggestions. According to

idea of travelling abroad is still taboo in most circles – the ethnocentric ideals of most traditional

goals of success. Whether it be religious thoughts of demons abroad or wanting to keep handy
laborers at home, or any other reason, there is always reason for those wanting to wanting to keep
such virile young at home, and they will often attempt to do so. Those leaving will give up their

the inward change and newfound knowledge, they will not be able to see the world with their young

rather than criminals themselves (par. 2). The ban was put into effect due to the Hamilton Massacre
when a man by the name of Thomas Hamilton walked into a primary school and left sixteen children

carried out the research, said that the number of crimes in which a handgun was reported increased

Although marijuana use was decreasing in 1977, recent studies show differently today. According to
an Article written Bridget M. Kuehn (2013), the opposite results are occurring with media's positive

rise, with The National Institute on Drug Abuse reporting a steady claim since 2006 (p.429). Kuehn

seniors since 1979" (p.429). What is the cause of this change in attitude? Some people feel that it is
the media to blame. For example, as states debate legalization, it brings positive media attention to
marijuana use. According to Guy J. Golan (2010) of the Newspaper Research Journal, California's
big decision to be the first state to legalize marijuana in 1996 was a huge start. Other states have
since followed in that same direction, and in result, recent media attention and debate have been

rise in use (p.305). In his article, Golan (2010) comments specifically, "Indeed, coverage of medical

The Great Homework Debate

  • 1. The Great Homework Debate Before we move forward in determining what is effected by way of homework we need to examine the history that this debate is going through. The great homework debate has gone thru great changes since its inception. During earlier times children in the lower grades, grades one through four, received very little if any homework through the year, however the older grades received in upwards of three hours per night. As years went on we've seen this debate go from a positive factor for academics to a negative factor. There been many academic and child health organizations that have led various different movements on this debate. Just since the 1950s we have seen this debate take on numerous schools of thought from one extreme to the other. Often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. What Is The Essay 'Arguing On The Internet' By Poza In the essay "Arguing on the Internet" the author tells of his inexperience in political debate, and how it shaped his future. (Poza, 2005) His story starts out by telling the readers, about the first time he posted a comment on the internet about gun control. Poza, was simply sharing his personal thoughts on the subject and what he got in return was profanity, disgust and the desire to persuade others by debating effectively. Poza shares some of his thoughts on learning to debate with others. First, you must know your subject well, take time to study and role play with the debating issue. Second, sort through your thoughts and pick your strongest points to argue, and throw out any weak points, they are not worth the debate. Lastly Poza, says "don't ever admit you are wrong". (Poza, 2005) Story telling dates back to the beginning of time, and is an important method that has been used to share vital information. Stories have been used to pass on tribal information, values, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using a humorous opening to a story can put the audience at ease and trust the presenter. (Osburg, 1995) Laughter is a great form of gaining the attention of the audience and allows the speaker to make a connection. Practicing the storytelling process allows the speaker to make appropriate changes and helps build confidence in the speech process. An audience will connect better with a speaker that is confident in the message being presented. (Osburg, 1995) Next, the speaker should take special care to allow the words to flow steadily. Using words such as "um" "a" and "but" will make the presenter sound less confident and therefore loose the attention of the audience. • 5. Abraham Lincoln And Stephen Douglas: The Great Debates The debates between Republican, Abraham Lincoln and Democrat, Stephen Douglas, were known as the Great Debates. There were three important parts that is worthy of taking note about these debates, these debates include the cause, the content, and the conclusion. First we see the causes of the debates. Both Lincoln and Douglas were running for a place in the United States Senate in Chicago, so the debates were held in Chicago. Leading up to the debate both candidates were rallying supporters and discussing many issues. The most important issue was whether Illinois ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now, as mentioned before, the topic of debate was slavery, more specifically slavery expansion. Throughout the debates Douglas tried to get Lincoln to confess that he was an abolitionist, therefore explaining his opposition to slavery and basically defeating his opponent. But Lincoln claimed that if slavery expanded, the people are going against the Constitution which states that all men were created with equal rights no matter the race, intellect, size, moral development, or social standing. Douglas's opening speech questioned the audience whether they would want an African–American to have the same rights as a white man, as if it were something that would be terrible. To which Lincoln responded with the statement that all men were created equally. Douglas and Lincoln also discussed the Dredd Scott case, Douglas appealed the Dredd Scott decision because it deprived certain people of rights. Lincoln then challenged that another Dredd Scott case would expand slavery even to free states. Lincoln said Douglas did not care about whether slavery is voted up or down and challenged the Freeport Doctrine because it alienated Southerners. This proved to hurt Douglas because the Southerners would now vote for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Melting Pot That It Is Made Up Of Many Types Of People... American being the melting pot that it is, is made up of many different types of people that have different political priorities. During an election year, these priorities are discussed even more often and more heatedly. Newscasters light this debate fire daily, as do politicians. Some of these issues are absolutely essential to the American political life and should be discussed and evaluated in order to make America great. Even when parties are on opposite sides of an issue, they can agree that priorities need to be established and evaluated (Gallup, 2016). In evaluating today's society both economic and social issues top the list of priorities. Economic issues top the list of priorities for most American. Unemployment is a word that Americans hear on a daily basis. Currently the 62.7% of adults who are able to work are currently working and three major factors are driving the decrease in workers. Due to the large number of "baby boomers" who are retiring, which is healthy and understandable, we have a decline in the number of adults who work. Another positive reason is due to a larger number of college students and graduate students. The cause that is worrisome is the people who have "given up" on finding work. The Wall Street Journal estimates that about 2.6 million of the roughly 92 million American adults who don 't work want a job but aren 't looking for one (CNN, 2016). Politicians and citizens alike recognize this as a political concern. Foreign trade is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Speech : Speech And Debilitate Speech and debilitate I am afraid of many things; I fear heights, large crowds, death even fucking moths, all of which I have justifiable reasons for but my biggest fear the fear of public speaking is nonsensical. I know it is a ridiculous fear there is no inherent danger involved in speaking publicly it's no different from a personal conversation just louder but for some reason I can't get over it and trust me I've tried. In my senior year of high school, I was given a throw away assignment something the teachers used to fill the time. My English teacher Mrs.Woods had every student pick one song and describe examples of rhyme, simile and metaphor used. It was a simple assignment something a fifth grader could do with ease. The only problem for me was that we had to do it in front of the entire class. At the time I was by no means shy, I considered myself a master of small talk (whop dee doo), easily able to strike up conversation with any of my peers. So you would think that public speaking would come just as naturally. I thought so, I really hadn't experience the fear beforehand. So when it was my turn to present my ingenious findings on the use of figurative language use in Elton Johns "Candle in the wind" I was confident. I stood up from my seat smiling, walked up to the chalk board in my blue baggy jeans and XL t–shirt and opened my mouth only to find the sound of silence. What just happened? My throat tensed up, my mouth was suddenly dry and my body was unstable. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Winnipeg, Manitoba a teen at the age of 16 had murdered 20 year old David Michael in his head on September 25, 2011. (Turner, James, 2013, n.d) After trial the boy's name was revealed to the public after Brenda Keyser, the Court of Queen's Bench justice had decided that he was a "high risk to reoffend". The method of using factual guilt would allow more convicts to be sentenced with innocent citizens also being punished as where the current method of legal guilt will protect innocent people from being sentenced but allowing more suspects getting away with the law. With Sinclair's case, the due process of legal guilt protects one's right till proven guilty was applied and executed as intended without having conflicts with the law, evidence was provided and a violation in the law was found thus confirming his sentence. The methodology has proven to work in this case and in several other cases as well. If factual guilt was used, the chances of Sinclair getting the same sentence would be considerably high. The reason why legal guilt would be better is to prevent people from being punished unnessarily. Also the Code mentions how one's rights should not be abandoned under any circumstances and is innocent till proven guilty. Arguments can be made that factual guilt can be more beneficial, preventing murders like O.J. Simpson escaping from the law, making communities more safe. The drawback of this is the violation of section 11 in the Charter of rights and freedom preventing people feeling confident in their law enforcement and increasing their chances of being falsely ... • 13. The Great Debaters: The Wiley College Debate Team Essay Introduction Conflict is inevitable in any personal relationship or among members of any group. While we encounter many types of conflict in our lifetime, we often look for ways to avoid conflict. So, why do we run away from dealing with our conflict? It is often because many of us fear the conflict will escalate into a situation we will not be able to sustain. "As conflicts escalate, they go through certain incremental transformations. Although these transformations occur separately on each side, they affect the conflict as a whole because they are usually mirrored by the other side. As a result of these transformations, the conflict is intensified in ways that are sometimes exceedingly difficult to undo" (Pruitt, and Kim 89). We ... Other talented debaters on Tolson's team include fiercely independent student Henry Lowe, and Samantha Brooke –– the first ever female ever to join the Wiley College debate team. While most educators may not have recognized the remarkable potential of assembling such a disparate team, Tolson's unique vision truly set him apart from the pack as the team begins to experience a series of consecutive victories on their road to challenging Harvard at the National Championships" (Buchanan). Event One of the challenges the Wiley College debate team was faced with in the film was during a debate against Oklahoma City University. The topic selected for argument was whether Negroes should be admitted into the same colleges as Whites. This particular subject is one the students at Wiley College were all too familiar with. The setting of the debate would begin the escalation of the conflict between the two schools. The intensity of the conflict began when Oklahoma City University refused to hold the debate on campus and would only accept the challenge to go up against Wiley College if the competition was held at another location. • 15. Great Afterlife Debate In the "Great Afterlife debate," Michael Shermer and Deepak Chopra embody two different opinions concerning the existence of afterlife. Shermer points out that the concepts of afterlife and near–death experiences are illusion of the brain. Chopra disproves that afterlife is a concept from the scientific perspective in the course of refuting the arguments of Shermer. In what follows, this essay is an agnostic point of view for support neither of the arguers.... (THESIS......) There are two separate parts of the debate in respect of the issue of afterlife. In the first place, Michael Shermer argues that afterlife is not real on the basis of six main evidences from Deepak Chopra's book, Life After Death: Burden of Proof. He considers that the belief of Chopra "is almost entirely based on faith, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shermer claims that the idea of afterlife or paradise are shaped and reshaped by the human mind to refute the arguments forwarded by Chopra. By using the report about out–of–body experiences, Shermer points out that it is impossible to have a world after death or any out–of–the–body paradise. To strengthen his argument, Shermer restates the argument that there is no afterlife since "[paradise] is in our thoughts and in our actions. It is in our lives and in our loves. It is in our families and in our friends. It is in our communities and in our world. It is in the courage of our convictions and in the character of our souls" (The Great Afterlife, p15). • 17. Essay on The Great Debate on Global Warming The cause of global warming has been a debate between scientists and experts for numerous years. In fact, Svante August Arrhenius, a Swedish chemist, first predicted global warming would occur in 1896 (Harris 16). Researchers who agree it is naturally caused insist the greenhouse effect has many natural causes. Others agree that the cause of the Earth's increase in temperature is just part of a continuous cycle. These researchers argue that solar activity plays a huge role in the issue of global warming. Therefore, based upon the myth of the greenhouse effect, cyclical patterns, and research on solar activity, global warming is not a man–made dilemma. When greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, similar to the way greenhouse panes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The greenhouse effect will continue naturally. Methane makes up thirteen percent of greenhouse gases (Hopwood & Cohen 2). Wetlands are accountable for most of the natural methane concentrations polluted into the air because they contain bacteria that produce this gas during decomposition (Sources and Emissions 5). For this reason methane is often called swamp gas (Hopwood & Cohen 6). As part of their digestive process, termites release methane. Also, Oceans, rivers, and estuaries are populated with marine plankton and fish that create methane when they digest too(Sources and Emissions 5). Cows breathe out methane when they burp (Harris 10). Natural hydrates, mud volcanoes, gryphons, steam vents, wildfires, wild animals and bubbling hot springs expel methane in nature(Sources and Emissions 6). The causes of methane emissions are limitless, but it is evident that it is not a manageable greenhouse gas. The final greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide, is "laughing gas." It is colorless, has a sweet sent, and makes up six percent of the total greenhouse gases. Naturally, it is discharged from oceans and bacteria that populate in soils. It can also be found in human and animal waste. Since 1750, nitrous oxide levels have been on the rise. Although nitrous oxide does not contribute to the greenhouse gases as much as carbon dioxide and methane do, it is important to suppress this gas because it remains in the atmosphere for a very long time (Hopwood & Cohen 7). ... Some kids choose to participate and others just sign their children up. Recently, "The Great Trophy Debate" has sparked a question of whether or not all participants should receive trophies or not. Currently, many sport organizations have taken about traditional trophies and substituted participation trophies for all. O'Sullivan argues that participation trophies are not really trophies because the more trophies given out, the less worth each will have. O'Sullivan argues, "Supporters of such trophies state that trophies motivate kids to play, yet research shows that extrinsic motivation on its own can be harmful, not helpful." ("The Great Trophy Debate.") O'Sullivan means that traditional trophies inspire young athletes to compete with excellence. A trophy signifies an accomplishment. Yes, it is wrong and harmful for an athlete to be solely motivated by winning a trophy. O'Sullivan argues, that is equally as harmful to remove this reward and act like a losing team is just as good as a winning team. Without competition, what are sports? Trophies are expensive. Passed on March 23, 2010 under considerable opposition, ACA is widely considered to be the landmark achievement of Obama's presidency, and his hopeful legacy for historians long afterward. Even Nancy Pelosi (D–CA), Speaker of the House, echoed this air of uncertainty while advocating for passage of the bill in 2010 when stating "But we have to pass the bill to learn what is in it." Once the bill became law, arguments arose when discussion began on the specific details, regulations, and strategy for implementation. There are endless angles to approach this law, each with a mix of fact, bias, and prediction. Most viewpoints agree with the primary goal of Obamacare, to make healthcare affordable for everyone, but differ on the balance between the roles that government and private insurance companies should play in the solution. Weimin Deng (Tuesday Section) Debate as a Life Background History of Debate In my sophomore year of highschool, I joined the policy debate club. Policy debate was an intensive academic activity where teams of two would engage in discussions on the best government 's policy to enact. There would be two teams in each debate round: affirmative or negative. The affirmative would have to propose a policy that the U.S federal government should enact based on their constructed advantages for implementation. After that speech, the negative team would have to make arguments, for examples, kritiks, disadvantages, and counterplans, to refute the implementation of the plan. Throughout an almost two hour debate round, both teams will try to speak almost 500 words per minute in order to respond to arguments. As one can imagine, debate is fast paced activity that boils down to which team can best defend their arguments. Within in this debate round, there would be a judge to decide the winner. Flow: Difference between Exotelic and Autotelic The concept of flow in occupational science is described as an autotelic experience where an individual is fully engaged under a high challenge activity. Often times, one may lose sense of time due to high level of concentration. Moving students around within dorms can be a headache, but there's even more at stake: the risk that students will be so unhappy that they might transfer out of the college before sophomore year." The issues Altman presents through Natasha Singer's words for unhappy roommates in college are both direct and indirect. Some of the horror stories told by alumni are about the struggle they went through to find the right roommate after many failed attempts of changing dorms and testing uncharted waters with a new peer. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935 as a part of the New Deal during the Great Depression "to frame a law which gives some measure of protection to the average citizen and his family against the loss of a job and against poverty–ridden old age." Although the system has proven to be one of the most popular programs ever established, its future has been questionable for some time. According to the Social Security Administration (2008), "People are living longer, the first baby boomers are nearing retirement, and the birth rate is lower than in the past. The result is that the worker–to–beneficiary ratio has fallen from 16.5–to–1 in 1950 to 3.3–to–1 today. Within 40 years it will be 2–to–1. At this ratio there will not be enough workers to pay scheduled benefits at current tax rates" (Social Security Administration [SSA], 2008). This issue concerns many citizens, especially younger generations, and continues to be a hot topic of debate amongst politicians. Many ideas have been proposed about how to reform the current system. The most popular of these ideas is to create an entirely new system consisting of mandatory pension accounts which would allow individuals to accumulate a balance over time with investment options such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. Industrial Hemp: The Great Debate Industrial Hemp The Great Debate Introduction Many knowledgeable people who know and understand the potential of industrial hemp are convinced that it is one of the world's most perfect products. Its fiber makes rope and cloth which is very strong and resilient and when used to make paper products, the production is far tidier and much more efficient than using wood to make paper. Hemp is indeed considered one of the world's oldest agricultural products and hemp has a history in the United States that includes the fact that the Declaration of Independence and the original St. James Bible are actually printed on hemp paper. The list of practical uses is lengthy and impressive, but due to drug laws in the United States the growing of cannabis for industrial hemp uses is illegal; this has been a source of considerable controversy in the United States. The uses of industrial hemp and the debate as to whether industrial hemp farming should be allowed in the U.S. will be reviewed and critiqued in this paper. Thesis: This paper takes the position that industrial hemp should be legal in America, because it has been proven useful in myriad applications for many years, because it is not potent for smoking albeit it's from the same species, because it could create thousands of jobs, and because in the fight against global warming industrial hemp absorbs four times as much carbon dioxide and can produce as much as four times the fiber than trees can. • 57. The Great Debate : Essentialism Vs. Dominance Beep, Beep look out there's a woman on the road. Often time's women are stereotyped as a bad driver. In the article "The Great Debate: Essentialism vs. Dominance," Courtney Stoker argues that there is a difference in communication between men and women through two theories. The Essentialism theory is the thought that men and women communicate differently due to their natural instincts as the Dominance theory imposes that the difference in communication is due to men's perceived dominance (Stoker 676). As Stoker compares these theories she makes it clear that neither had substantial evidence in explaining the differences of gender communication. As Stoker stated, "But once again, I do not feel as if there is enough evidence to consciously declare one theory correct" (679). Stoker suggests the two main theories about why men and women communicate differently are flawed. Stoker is correct that these two theories do not explain every difference of men and women as they demonstrate behaviors in driving that do not specifically fall into these theories. First of all men and women drive differently because they show different amounts of aggression. Aggressive drivers are best known for putting someone else in danger or harm's way while driving. This type of behavior is found more in men than women while driving. For example, "When it comes to aggressive driving, however, the majority (54 percent) of drivers cite men as the most likely culprits of aggressive driving. Compared ... • 59. The Great Debate: The School Play Urinetown The final adventure needed to improve my adulting skills was to either attend the Great Debate, or the school musical Urinetown. Having absolutely no background in theatre, I thought it would be a perfect way to become more of an adult. On April 20th, I made my way to the Annie Russell theatre for the first showing of the play. The play was very interesting to say the least. I have never thought about having a drought so bad that we, as a society, didn't have the luxury of private bathrooms. With the exception of the upper class (Urine Good Company), citizens were paying to use a select bathroom that had a line the whole. • 61. Great Political Debates The Great Political Debate Ben Franklin once said there is only two certainties in life, death and taxes. Although you may not agree with this statement, it does provide two key topics that are highly debated amongst parties of the United States democracy. In terms of death, abortion and the death penalty are debated topics that each party has a different stance on. Those topics are an area of government that do not have a consensus. When it comes to taxes, every party has general ambitions on how to treat taxing citizens. Even though there are a multitude of political parties present in politics today, the only parties that are repeatedly mentioned election after election are the democratic and republican parties. These two parties usually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The democratic party relates the issue of abortion in a court case called Roe verse Wade. In this court case, the US Supreme Court affirmed the legality of a woman's right to have an abortion under the 14th amendment. As one can see, depending on how you interpret the 14th amendment determines the outcome of legality. Since the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of the law, the states must grant the right to abortion, regardless of being a red state or not. Another democratic view on abortion is that a woman should never have to fear the ability to pay for an abortion. In the democratic platform for America in 2004 it stated, "we stand proudly for a woman's right to choose, consistent with Roe v. Wade, and regardless of her ability to pay" (Democratic platform). This is in opposition of the republican view, as republicans do not want health care providers to provide for abortions. The democratic view is that all women should have access to an abortion, which is most likely going to be through health care. Overall, one can see that the democratic view on abortion differs from the republican viewpoint through the interpretation of the 14th amendment and thoughts on paying for ... • 63. Edmund Burke The Great Debate Politics now a days is hard to understand and when we do understand and want to create change it's hard to get our government to create change. In "The Great Debate: Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, and the Birth of Right and Left," Levin tells the story of an unfriendly rivalry between the progenitors modern conservatism and modern liberalism. In the time Burke and Paine shared – the late 18th century – philosophical arguments could ignite revolutions, and pamphlets could be as important as battles. Both Burke and Paine were masters of political rhetoric at a time when political rhetoric really mattered, and their rivalry still reverberates. In today's society about conflicts between the police and minority communities in the US, Burk would take a position that the american government has to change some laws around in order to create equality and justice while Pain would take a position of starting all over is the way to go to create something better for all. ... Burke mentions that "the old and tried model will not always work, of course, but when it fails, societies would be wise to fix it by gradually building on what does work about it rather than by starting fresh with an untried idea" (66). By his quote he means that we have laws as well as expectations that have worked in the past to controlled the injustice happening with our minority communities but with new generations there's new change to happen because old techniques do not always work. As "society [is] always changing, its law need to change too"(9) in order to keep a balance of equality and justice in our society. • 65. The Great Debate: Medical Marijuana, Is It Ethical? The debate on Medical marijuana has been a controversial subject mainly because people have an abundance of opinions and very little scientific research to back up either side of the debate. The most important question here is "will medical marijuana be used for medical purposes or will it be used inappropriately?" Unlike a person who uses marijuana for medicine or entertainment, some people use marijuana as a means for income. Honestly marijuana sales is a very profitable business but the problem is that there is still a numerous amount of people who sell marijuana illegally. I have known for some time that my weakest area on Charlette Danielson's Framework for Teaching is asking questions that require higher order thinking. As a first grade teacher there is so much information that I am presenting to them that we move at a very fast pace. I am constantly checking for understanding, but my questions focus on knowledge and comprehension. I rarely take time for lengthy discussions that allow the children to express their opinions and interpretation of the information presented. The Idaho State Standards and the Danielson framework make it clear that this is an area I need to focus on and that I must make time for it in my very hectic schedule. I developed a plan of action to assist me in this process and set a goal to have 80% of my students score a 70% or higher on their written reading responses and a 3 or higher on their oral reading ... Each time the oral and written responses improved but they still required a great deal of teacher mediation. The second assessment revealed that only 24% of my student had met the oral target and 31% had met the written. My kids were making great progress, but we had started out much lower than I had anticipated. Day seven brought the great debate. Unfortunatley there was not much of a debate. They all believed the wolf because the title stated that it was the "true" story. They did however support their opinions with evidence. • 69. Politics And Politics In Aristophanes In The Frogs Aristophanes in The Frogs satirizes politics and political leaders of Athens. During fifth century there was direct democracy in Athens. The democratic government of Athens rested on three main institutions, and a few others of lesser importance. The three pillars of democracy were: the Assembly of the Demos, the Council of 500, and the People's Court. On the other hand, this is a democracy without equality. The Assembly is basically gathering of Athenian male citizens to vote for law. At Athens politics was a kind of communication between the classes; for this reason the primary political skill was rhetoric. Politics was carried on by constantreference from the few to the many. The situation of the play affects its internal constitution. As drama is analogous to politics, so the dramatic action is assimilated to political action. For the Athenian audience, the fully expressive mode is competitive debate. The Frogs contains the largest number of references to the poet's function as an adviser. The world of Aristophanes' comedies is mainly one of fantasy, where free men carry private peaces in wineskins or fly to Zeus on a dungbeetle, women take control of the state, and a slave rides down to Hades on a donkey(18). But Aristophanes focus in The Frogs is on contemporary politics of real world. The purpose of The Frogs is to bring reform in Athenian society by satirizing contemporary politics and political leaders. Aristophanes gave an advice in the parbasis of The Frogs. • 71. 2012 Election: The Great Medicare Debate 2012 Election: The Great Medicare Debate Since 1965, Medicare has been attempting to provide low cost, guaranteed access to much needed healthcare for senior citizens over the age of 65 and other age groups that suffer from disabilities and terminal diseases. These people represent some of the most vulnerable population groups in the United States. Most do not work, and rely on Medicare to provide them the access to healthcare they need. Unlike privatized health insurance companies, Medicare is a social insurance program that is paid for through federal mandates and tax payer funds. Billions of dollars are spent annually on over 50 million Americans in need (Alonso–Zaldivar 1). The care structure itself is broken into several main parts: Medicare Part A covers hospital costs, Part B cover most outpatient care costs, and Part C and D cover prescription drug costs through dealing with other private insurance. Yet, the upcoming election in November is threatening to change and alter the structure. Each candidate has his own plan to deal with Medicare; both are trying to reign in the costs of operating Medicare, but with some elements being obviously more beneficial for Medicare recipients than others. Mitt Romney is the Republic presidential candidate who wants an overhaul of Medicare in order to keep costs down. Romney's approach is based off his running mate Paul Ryan's suggestions. The Great Debate to Leave Home Traversing lands unknown to one before has always been a subject of mystery, as these foreign sights and wonders give way to many unexpected discoveries to the naïve mind. In any society, the idea of travelling abroad is still taboo in most circles – the ethnocentric ideals of most traditional cultures, while not outright forbidding, but still do look down on the practice of leaving home with goals of success. Whether it be religious thoughts of demons abroad or wanting to keep handy laborers at home, or any other reason, there is always reason for those wanting to wanting to keep such virile young at home, and they will often attempt to do so. Those leaving will give up their identity, but not in any kind of negative way; as they grow, they will find themselves changed by time, as they embrace the new ideas and rituals of their live–in society. They may go home, but with the inward change and newfound knowledge, they will not be able to see the world with their young eyes, as they once had. Overcoming adversity is a manner of mending the word a bit and learning to adapt to any current situation. Those leaving home are often met with adversity. We refer to our troops as "armed forces" and the necessity of maintaining our firepower has been recognized throughout the human history, which the firearm has helped to shape. The ban was put into effect due to the Hamilton Massacre when a man by the name of Thomas Hamilton walked into a primary school and left sixteen children and teachers dead (par. 3). The Centre for Defense Studies at Kings College in London, which carried out the research, said that the number of crimes in which a handgun was reported increased from 2,648 in 1997–98 to 3,685 in 1999–200 (par. 5). Research shows that in recent years the use of this drug has been on the rise, especially among teenagers. Bridget M. Kuehn, MSJ (2011) stated in her article, "As marijuana use for medical or recreational purposes is debated at state and municipal levels across the country, use of the drugs among teens continues to climb"(p. 242). In a survey done by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 45,000 eighth, tenth, and twelfth grade students showed an increase in the use of Marijuana in comparison to years passed. Marijuana use is now on the rise, with The National Institute on Drug Abuse reporting a steady claim since 2006 (p.429). What is the cause of this change in attitude? Some people feel that it is the media to blame. For example, as states debate legalization, it brings positive media attention to marijuana use. According to Guy J. Golan (2010) of the Newspaper Research Journal, California's big decision to be the first state to legalize marijuana in 1996 was a huge start. Other states have since followed in that same direction, and in result, recent media attention and debate have been focused on the benefits of marijuana rather than its harmful effects and may have contributed to this rise in use (p.305).
