However, as the nation grew into the most powerful in the world, its cities followed suit. They
became the social, economic, and political centers of their respective areas. Cities such as Boston,
New York, and San Francisco became the industrial and marketing strongholds of the country.

People turn to suburbs to find happiness in items and people. But in the end the amenities of a

in public hospitals than in for–profit hospital (Huang 2). This shows that private facilities are often
better than public hospitals and emphasizes the idea that the best health care is for those who pay the

The music video I've chosen for my music video analysis essay is "The Suburbs". "The Suburbs"
was released 1 June 2010 by the Canadian indie–rock band known as Arcade Fire and was a single
from the album The Suburbs. What's cool about this music video is that the video footage used for
the song is just scenes taken from a short film called "Scenes from the Suburbs." "The Suburbs"
revolves around a group of teens. At first these teens are riding their bikes and playing in what
seems to be some suburbs. As the video progresses the suburbs seem to get more and more
dangerous as men with guns appear and people are dragged from their homes.
The video starts off with a group of friends riding their bikes and playing in the suburbs. The sun is
out and it looks to be about midday. The weather looks to be about eighty degrees with only a few
clouds out. This represents the cliché suburban life for these teens. However, the teens start noticing
the decay of their suburban life at 1:20. They see smoke from what I assume to be an explosion far
away with what looks like an attack helicopter heading towards it. This scene is only for a couple of
seconds though, as the teens continue to play afterwards. At 1:53 you see a boy and a girl from the

INTRO During the "Baby Boomer" era, following WWII, America underwent one of the largest
demographic shifts and population growths in history. Huge amounts of home construction on the
outskirts of America's largest cities, known as "levittowns" became the new staple of the American
dream, with the houses sporting two car garages, and white picket fences. These low density,
predominantly middle class residential districts, were America's first true suburbs. These suburbs
were constructed mainly in response to the new postwar consumerism that enveloped the parents of
the baby boomers. With the new economy, affordable housing, and most families becoming single
income dependent, families grew bigger and bigger. The 1947 passing of the bill that lead to the
interstate highway system, only added fuel to the fire of suburbanization. With the new interstate
highway system, more affordable and fuel efficient automobiles, and the government aiding in the
financing of new suburban homes, the choice seemed elementary. All of these factors pushing to the
suburban movement, only spurred the baby boomers on, and between 1940–50, there was an 835%
percent increase in living births with nearly 4 million children being born every year. In 1940,
19.5% of the United States population lived in what would be considered to be suburban areas
outside of large metropolitan areas, however, by 1960; the number was pushing nearly 40%. The
