2. Cultural and Ethical Consideration
As with our instruction set, I learned that not all aspects of
writing can transfer from different cultures or even to different
languages. When trying to edit our instruction set, taking into
account the different aspects of cultures was not in my mind. So
learning to edit our instructions to meet the different cultural
norms was a good learning experience. Such as learning that the
German people have more of a tendency to want to work by
themselves, and don’t like unexpected events in their schedule
was something we had to consider so that our proposal could be
as effective between the two cultures.
3. Writing Effective Prose
Learning to write effectively is a great skill to learn for all majors, as inevitably
you will need a resume so you can get your dream job one day. By learning a
good prose, you can make your resume the most effective it could be, by
explaining how your skills and previous jobs will help you thrive in your new
environment. Its one of those things that you don’t necessarily do all the time,
but when its needed, it can be one of the most valuable skills you can add to
your profile.
Also when it comes to trying to be noticed by a potential employer, a cover
letter is another effective prose you can use. As the cover letter is the initial
proposal for why you would be an ideal candidate, it is also the first thing an
employer will look at. So it is your first chance to make a good impression and
show that you are qualified for the position and why you believe you would do
great things with the opportunity.
4. Creating Technical Documents
As we learned when creating our instruction sets and testing them with
our usability report, technical documents are an important part of the
business landscape. So when making our proposals, it was difficult
trying to differentiate between several of the different topics we were
supposed to cover. They almost seemed like they were redundant
because a lot of the information we had seemed to just be repeated
through several of the sections. But a proposal can be the difference
between making your career and just staying in the position you have,
so learning to change things up just a little so it doesn’t seem repetitive
was a key aspect of the section. How can you explain what you are
proposing without repeating yourself while still explaining effectively
what you have proposed.
5. Creating Technical Documents
For me, I think the funnest assignment was our proposal presentation
in class. I’ve never been one of those kids that stand in front of the class
and gets all flustered and nervous. But what was helpful was learning
what to do while your standing there, since you cant always be talking
what do you do when its your partners turn to speak. Also making an
effective power point was something new to me. Trying to make the
power point creative is not a real strong point of mine, so learning to
add pictures and trying to keep my points as short as possible in the
slide while explaining in greater detail actually made it easier for me by
taking off some of the pressure of having an amazing slide.
6. Principles of Info Design
When our group first started our instruction set, I didn’t realize how
many different ways there were to create one document. Trying to find
the most effective way for someone to test our schedule app was a little
trying. Settling on printing out individual pictures of each page was
found to be the most effective way. But by having the graphics in front
of our testers allowed them to see everything so they could do what the
instructions said to the best of their abilities.
7. Group Work
I think the way our classroom was set up was perfect for us having to
share information and work together. With the conference style set up,
it allowed for us to talk and get together much easier than pulling up
desks to one another. Plus with the addition of the big TV screen and
having the wireless access to it from our computers made the
presentations that much easier. Having the clicker to change slides and
being able to move freely in front of the class made it more comfortable
for me to give our presentation. Then with the desktop computer
available to us also, it didn’t leave anyone at a disadvantage when
working in groups. If someone didn’t have a laptop, you could easily
just move around a screen and keep up with the lesson for the day.
