INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this document is to reflect on the learning outcomes of
English 2311. Incorporated are the skills that were learned, techniques
that were used, and a description of each assignment.
Coming into this course, I didn’t know what technical writing signified. I
walked into the classroom on day one with good writing skills but
average designing, collaborating, and technical writing qualities. When
we were assigned to groups, we instantly learned about the different
ways to become an efficient technical writer. I had the opportunity to
work on different assignments with my group and applied rhetorical
situation to each one. In every assignment, I seen signs of improvement
in my ability to write, design, and assess the audience.

Rhetoric
The term rhetoric was one I learned vastly about throughout this
course. Rhetoric taught me how to handle and understand
rhetorical situations in order to impress and captivate the
audience’s attention. This included making revisions, solving
problems, and using effective language to get points across.
For our car manual mobile application proposal, me and my
group wrote in a clear, concise manner to help persuade our
audience. We knew we had to keep our audience engaged by
remaining informative and professional throughout our entire
proposal. Furthermore, we did a video presentation to help guide
the audience through our mobile application.
This is one skill I will definitely be using in my future profession. I
plan on attending Physical Therapy school, and it’s required to
be able to communicate in a succinct matter. My rhetorical skills
will empower me to connect with others through writing and
communication.

Writing
In the area of writing, I learned the true importance of it and skills
needed to be an effective writer. This class taught me how to
improve as a writer by introducing me to new features of effective
writing. A few writing conventions that stood out to me were word
usage, spelling, grammar, and sentence formation.
The resumes and job letter I worked on at the beginning of the
course molded me into a better writer. I learned how to use
tables and align text to keep information more organized. Later
on in the semester, I winded up finding the first two assignments
helpful for the other projects because they gave me a glimpse of
how to write professionally.
Writing is something that I’ll always need and use in life. My
future job will require me to have good writing techniques in
order to generate readable and professional content. After
learning and improving in writing, I can honestly say I love writing
and everything associated with it.

Video Presentation: When designing the video for our mobile
application, design was imperative. We put emphasis on sound
and picture quality, as these were vital factors in creating and
executing a successful video presentation. This assignment
taught me how to use the application IMovie, which included
learning how to edit, caption, and format. Furthermore, I gained a
deeper understanding of what it takes to get a grasp of the
audience’s attention. Being savvy in this area will help me
immensely in the years to come. Not only will I know what to say
and do in future presentations, but I’ll have a good idea of what
type of audience I’m dealing with.
Mobile Application Project: Designing an application was by
far my favorite because I learned a little bit of everything. I
became proficient in using Marvel and learned to create pages
with instructional information, implement images, link pages to
make them clickable, and storyboard. From this project, I’ll take
with me skills of what it takes to design a usable application that
includes good headers, alignment, and succinct information.
Designing is a skill that I’ll use in different situations for
enhancement.

This class involved a lot of group work. Preferably, I like to work
alone, but working in a group helped me grow and become a
better leader. Each project became more and more exciting
because I had a great group that was always ready to contribute.
I learned to broaden my horizons and give ear to the thoughts of
others. I enjoyed working on each assignment thanks to the
hard-working group I had for the entire semester.
For every assignment, we would assign each other certain tasks,
which taught me how to be responsible. When one of us would
get stuck or behind, we found ways to help each other out.
Teamwork helped us overcome a few challenges with our mobile
application when we couldn’t get it to function properly. Through
the challenges, I learned that three minds working together can
lead to fabulous results. Being a part of a group was an
awesome experience and one that increased my intelligence.
Collaboration is a requisite for what I’ll be doing in the future. I
have to be able to communicate, work with others, and open to
new ideas.

Ethics/Culture
We learned the importance of translating information in a way that everyone can relate to
and understand. This included writing and speaking in a fluently, culturally sound matter.
Ethics
• We made sure to use reputable sources when needed.
• We cited each and every one of our sources, which is something we learned how to
do.
• We practiced ethical communication in most of our projects by producing relatable
information to keep audience engaged.
Culture
• In our usability tests, our surveys consisted of diverse questions that enabled all
groups of people to take the surveys without complications.
• We became culturally competent by maintaining an diverse attitude that enabled us
to be skilled in delivering cross-cultural information.
• To address and assess the different types of audiences and situations, we used
rhetorical moves in writing.

APPLIED TECHNOLOGY
Throughout the course I became savvy with technology. Various programs were used to complete each
assignment. I learned to effectively use technologies to design, compose, and create documents. I
became familiar with marvel to design an application, PowerPoint to make a professional resume, word
to properly align and organize text, and IMovie to edit videos.
Applied technology is something I use everyday and will continue to use in the years to come. I became
proficient at using new programs, which will benefit me in the long run to complete projects faster. The
various technologies I became familiar with in this course taught me to efficiently align, spell, design,
and edit.

Conclusion
Initially, technical writing seemed like a very complex course; however, I gained a
liking for it as the course progressed. The class was very practical and
instructional that I developed many great skills I can use in the future. Looking
back, I can say I fully understand the definition of technical writing and
everything incorporated with the term. I am utterly appreciative that I had such a
great professor that made this class fun and easy. Thank you.
