The film of the Maltese Falcon and the novel of the Maltese Falcon share some stark differences
along with certain similarities that the film and novel hold. John Huston who directed the film of the
Maltese Falcon shows Sam Spade a little differently as to how Dashiell Hammett portrays him. Both
do share some commonalities between them, yet we see a greater split from novel to film in the final
scene of the Maltese Falcon. The film portrays Spade as this stoic, cold–hearted detective. Yet, the
novel displays Spade as a more dominate grabbing man that needs answers now. The film differs
from the novel as we see Spade portrayed in the film as a cold and stoic character as we see him in
the novel as a more dominate and persistent character. As we progress through the final scene Sam
Spade briskly moves on to alert the authorities about having Cairo and Gutman on the move. The
novel shows Sam after putting the receiver down to appear nervous "he wet his lips and looked
down at his hands. Their palms were wet. He filled his deep chest with air. His eyes we glittering
between straightened lids" (p. 574). As to the film when we see Spade hang up the phone he briskly
approaches Brigid trying to get as much information out of her as he can before the police arrive in

what is about to happen and for how aggressive he will be in order to get all of the information

characters. Samuel Spade is a detective who encounters multiple characters offering him money to
find the Maltese Falcon. Throughout his search, most of the characters lie to Spade to get what they
want. The Maltese Falcon's plot develops through a sequences of deceptions told by specific
characters to achieve their goals. Brigid O'Shaughnessy comes across as the master liar, tricking

instance of man vs. self conflict in that Sam loves Brigid, a femme fatale, but that her various lies,

I believe the film version went above and beyond in its adaptation of the novel 'The Maltese Falcon'.
Both versions maintained similar word choice and overall atmosphere, though the two differed in
how they provided the plot information and how scenes transitioned. The novel was well polished,
but the film was able to narrow in on the unspoken qualities of the story pertaining to the characters'
reactions and the underlying emotion that had been limited in the novel. Two advantages the novel
had were its length, which allowed for more developed characters and backstories, and its ability to
use chapters, which broke the plot into more digestible portions. However, I feel the film overall
possessed more advantages and ultimately provided a better portrayal of the story of the Maltese

The Maltese Falcon Comparison
Samuel Spade of The Maltese Falcon novel by Dashiell Hammett is quite different from Samuel
Spade of "The Maltese Falcon" motion picture. The book was written a good decade before that
version of the movie was produced and in a much more casual time period. The novel focuses on
making Sam out to be a more complex character than the movie does. He is not just "the good guy"
as he is portrayed more so in the movie. The time period may have had a lot to do with the
differences between the 1941 movie and the book, published in 1929. The first thing to consider is

Another striking difference between the novel and the film is the portrayal of the femme fatale
antihero Brigid O'Shaughnessy. The book, once again in stride with the time period it was published
in, portrays her as a very sexually charged woman, someone who is without a doubt willing to use
her sexuality to her advantage in any situation. An example of her comfort with her sexuality is seen
when she strips in a bathroom for Spade and "In her mien was pride without defiance or
embarrassment" (196). The movie, however, shows her in a more traditional role of a woman,
someone who uses her femininity to her advantage, playing the poor helpless girl more often.
Instead of having Brigid strip in the movie, she merely pleads with Sam, begging him to believe that
she did not take the money. In its entirety, The Maltese Falcon novel reflects a more evolved
character in both Sam Spade and Brigid O'Shaughnessy. Each character is real enough to know that
"right" decisions aren't always clear and that sometimes no one can be trusted, as is seen when
Spade searches Brigid's room or strip searches her. While the Sam Spade of the movie still reserved
his doubts about people he met, he was a much less multi–faceted character, one who could still
make all the right choices and by the end of the story save the day. At the same time, the novel begs

She makes up an entire story just so she can track down another person, Floyd Thursby, who is also
looking for the bird (The Maltese Falcon). So Spades partner, Miles Archer, takes the responsibility
of tailing Thursby. Unfortunately, Thursby and Archer are both later found dead. So the police soon
start questioning Spade on suspicion he had something to do with it and at the same time Spade is
questioning Miss Wonderly, whose real name is actually Brigid O'Shaughnessy. After he gets what
he hopes is the total truth, another man named Joel Cairo comes out and asks Spade to find the bird
for $10,000 and after that an even more serious man named Casper Gutman offers Spade more than
everyone else to get the bird. Spade is the only one that knows where it is and is still being
questioned by the police. When the morning finally comes when Spades secretary picks up the
falcon from the train station Gutman above all is excited. He starts scratching away at the enamel
which should have gold underneath but he soon enough realizes that there is nothing but lead
underneath it. Disappointed he offers everyone to go out and get it back from the Russian
Constantinople who switched the real one. Cairo accepts the offer and they leave. Immediately
Spade phones the police and gives them all the names of the murderers and everyone involved. They
catch them all and Spade then turns in Brigid even though they had become so close.

Film Noir is a French word which means: dark or black film. This is very fitting as Film Noir and
the Maltese falcon are stories of dark deceptive people who often cannot be trusted. Film Noir is a
good example of this as the story is about a detective called Sam Spade who gets dragged into the
quest for the Maltese Falcon with a compulsive liar Kasper Gutman. The Maltese Falcon is a large

In the shot Spade is on the right and Bridgid on the left. Spade is wearing a hat, the light is projected
so that the shadow covers his eyes. Eyes often show how a person is really feeling, with these
hidden Spade looks as he is the bad deceptive one, this is another twist to the plot. O'Shaughnessy is
on the left, the light on her face is very different. Her face is lit up so her whole face is visible, her
eyes are large and she looks very innocent. Light is often projected on the females faces as to make
them look vulnerable and truthful, when is this instance Bridgid is the opposite. Another example is
when Spade is being questioned by two investigators, in this scene Spade sits in the middle of them
both so his face is visible but only the back of the other two investigators. There is only one lamp in
this frame and all the rays are focused on Spade, this as with the others makes him look innocent,
which in this case he is, but with the twists you are not sure.
Outdoor lighting is quite similar, outside scenes are usually lit by headlights and street lamps. A
scene outside is a good place for someone to hide as the beam of light is often focused on one direct

Recently I watched the film "The Maltese Falcon" for the first time. The Movie is a Mystery/Crime
film and follows a case that involves him and three eccentric criminals, a gorgeous liar, and their
quest for a priceless statuette. In the following paragraphs I'm going to explain more about this
movie and give you my honest opinion on what I thought of it. Set in 1940's San Francisco
California two detectives Spade and Archer own a self named detective agency and solve crimes
together. Spade and Archer are partners but Sam doesn't like Miles much. A knockout, who goes by
