MMC is one of the main Administrative Tools used to manage Windows and the network services it
provides. It provides a standard way to create, save, and open the various Administrative Tools
provided by Windows. When you open the Administrative Tools folder in Control Panel, most of the
programs are MMC.
MMC has a console tree that displays the hierarchical arrangement of snap–ins and extensions.
Snap–ins are also called pluggable modules and an extension is a snap–in that needs a parent snap–
in. By modifying (adding and deleting) snap–ins and extensions, users can customize the console or
access tools that are not placed in the Administrative Tools folder.
You can add snap–ins to a MMC by clicking File > Add/Remove Snap–in.

Business Analysis Part I
Microsoft is ranked 37 in the Fortune 500 list of companies (CNN, 2012). It is the world's largest
software company (Turits & Wesman, 2012), and is composed of five separate divisions:
Windows, Business, Servers and Tools, Entertainment and Devices, and Online. Investors should
look at how a company meets the needs of its stakeholders and perform a strength, weakness,
opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis. By looking at how Microsoft meets the needs of its
stakeholders, investors can determine if the company can sustain a positive image with everyone
involved, both internally and externally. Analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, ... Show more content

Microsoft analyzes these errors, and includes solutions in system updates that users can download.
Finally, Microsoft's investors want a positive return on any money put into Microsoft. Microsoft
currently offers a $.20 dividend on its shares (Turits & Wesman, 2012). Investors can purchase
Microsoft issued bonds. Depending on the terms, these bonds offer returns ranging from 0.875% to
5.3% (Microsoft Investor Relations, 2012). Microsoft offers investors detailed quarterly reports
outlining all expenses and incomes.
SWOT Analysis
Strengths
A look at Microsoft's internal factors reveals several strengths and weaknesses. One of the greatest
strengths Microsoft has is its name brand recognition. Microsoft is the world's largest software
developer with almost $70 billion in revenue for 2011 (Turits & Wesman, 2012). Most
consumers in the United States know or use Microsoft's PC OS, giving it 86% of the OS market
share, compared to 5% for Linux and 9% for Mac ("OS Statistics", 2012). Microsoft's Entertainment
and Devices division leads the gaming market with the X–box 360 holding 40% (Forbes, 2012) of
the market share for the current generation of consoles. Microsoft is continuing its development of
its subscription services that include X–Box Live, Windows Live, and Zune Music Pass. Most PC
users are familiar with Microsoft's business tools, specifically MS Office.

Microsoft, Microsoft And Microsoft
Later, US Justice Department filed antitrust charges in 1998 against the software company, claiming
that Microsoft had taken over the internet browser competition and limited consumer choice. In
view of antitrust regulation in the US and EU, and increasing competition in the desktop software
market, Microsoft was determined to move beyond the PC software industry. By formally
recognizing the emerging business opportunities introduced by the new internet era ("Web 2.0"),
Microsoft began to reinvent itself. It wanted to extend its software products into web–based services
for businesses and consumers. It wanted to try new sectors such as media, television set top boxes,
game consoles and other broader technology services. Microsoft aimed to transform itself and
wanted to set a standard for accessing, communicating and doing business over the internet.
Microsoft had entered various new markets in which it has no propriety advantages with it's new
diversification strategy. Microsoft could not conquer all the markets alone as they would have to
face new challenges and many industries were against Microsoft getting into their industry as they
feared that Microsoft would monopolize the market. Hence, it improved its already existing as well
as created new partnerships in the newly targeted industry. Microsoft hence, needed to constantly
monitor the dynamic changes in the markets and adjust its strategies to capture opportunities in
these markets.

Video Games And Its Impact On The World
In this era, video–games play an important role in leisure and entertaining time in every society.
PlayStation arrived in 1990s, which was the start of modern videogame age and with the entrance
and the development of new technology such as high speed internet, this entertaining segment
becomes more and more accessible and favourable among customers. Today gaming affects billions
of people around the globe and it will continue to grow. The UK games industry was worth close to
£3.5bn in consumer spend in 2013, up 17% from 2012. The forecasted revenue of the industry and
the daily time spent playing video games, make this industry a shining star. The forecasted revenue
for video game console (1 out of 4 segments in videogame industry) will be 55.05 billion US dollars
by 2018 (compared to 37.4 billion USD in 2012) (Anon., 2014)and the daily time spent playing
video games per capita in the United States will be 28.3 minutes by 2015 (Anon., 2014). These
numbers make this industry more attractive than its other entertaining competitors. In the Video–
games Market the final product, "the gaming console" is directly associated with brands, as their
content and quality generate a brand image. There are three major brands playing in this ground and
no one dares to enter into the market because of the giant size of these brands, these titans are

1. Economic Features
Market size and Growth Potential (as of 2003):
* The video game industry is currently a $31 billion global market. * Market size has tripled in
value over the last decade from $10 billion in 1995 to $31 billion as of 2003. * In five years the
industry is expected to grow approximately 14.8% ($36,042/$31,374), at a rate of approximately
2.96% per year (14.8%/5). * We feel that the industry is entering the early maturity stage of the
growth cycle for the overall global market. * Some observers feel that growth potential is massive,
predicting that the video game market is "on track to rival the movie, music, and television
industries" * Further analysis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* Others such as Sega and significantly smaller players have decided to focus on game producing
only. * Some major industry players are increasingly turning to outsourcing some of their game
production to independent licensed game developers.
2. Competitive Analysis
*Due to the vast amount of information regarding the gaming industry, we concentrated more on the
work of independent game developers than on the three makers of game consoles.
The Rivalry among Competing Sellers in the Gaming Industry:
Rivalry is seen as being intense due to the following factors:
Major players in the gaming industry: THQ, Acclaim Entertainment, EA Games, Microsoft, Sega,
and Activision
* Gaming industry has experienced fierce competition due to the presence of three (Sony, Nintendo,
Microsoft) different console manufacturers and several independent game developers. * All three
makers of gaming consoles also develop some of their own games, which are exclusive to their own
console. * Game developers are continually coming out with new games in attempt to improve upon
previous releases that were of a lesser technological quality * The smaller game developers are
having difficulty staying competitive due to a lack of capital, and unpredictable cash flows. *
Standardization is definitely present in the many games that are released; therefore we see many

Microsoft And Its Constituent Operating Units
Using a broad variety of academic and industry sources, our team has conducted extensive
background research on Microsoft and its constituent operating units. On the basis of our analysis of
the challenges facing these units, jointly and severally, we are proposing Microsoft immediately
initiate a comprehensive shift in the strategic direction of its Entertainment and Devices business
unit. Microsoft's inadequate response to the iPhone–era mobile revolution has seen it languish
behind its main competitors in the consumer electronics space; in Q2 of 2014, the Windows Phone
accounted for only 2.5% of the 301.3 million unit shipments worldwide (IDC, 2014). Likewise,
while Q4 2014 Xbox console sales were up 14% over Q3, the competing Sony platform sold 70%
more consoles during the same period (Harradence, 2014; Nelva, 2014). Microsoft's devices have
failed to command sufficient market attention to ensure the company's status as a major player in
consumer technologies. Growing market share in mobile and gaming has become a strategic
imperative of the highest importance.
We have identified three areas of pressing concern that simultaneously represent growth
opportunities. First, Microsoft must rededicate itself to building first–party software that fosters
creativity and improves the lives of users. This continues Microsoft's tradition of creating dominant,
functional platforms across a variety of hardware and contexts, as it did with Windows in the PC–
era. Second, by

EXTREME GAMERS' DEMAND PLAYSTATION 3 RATHER THAN PCs

CHAPTER # 1
BACKGROUND
1.1 INTRODUCTION
1.1.1 GAME CONSOLES
A video game console is an interactive entertainment computer or modified computer system that
produces a video display signal which can be used with a display device (a television, monitor, etc.)
to display a video game. The term "video game console" is used to distinguish a machine designed
for consumers to buy and use solely for playing video games from a personal computer, which has
many other functions, or arcade machines, which are designed for businesses that buy them and then
charge others to play.

The Wii is Nintendo's fifth home console, the direct successor to the Nintendo GameCube, and able
to play all official GameCube games. Nintendo first spoke of the console at the 2004 E3 press
conference and later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3. Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the
controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show. At E3 2006, the console won the first of
several awards. By December 8, 2006, it had completed its launch in four key markets.
1.1.2 GPU (Graphics Processing Units)
A graphics processing unit or GPU (also occasionally called visual processing unit or VPU) is a
specialized processor that offloads 3D graphics rendering from the microprocessor. It is used in
embedded systems, mobile phones, personal computers, workstations, and game consoles. Modern
GPUs are very efficient at manipulating computer graphics, and their highly parallel structure makes
them more effective than general–purpose CPUs for a range of complex algorithms. In a personal
computer, a GPU can be present on a video card, or it can be on the motherboard. More than 90% of
new desktop and notebook computers have integrated GPUs, which are usually far less powerful
than those on a dedicated video card.

An analysis of forces involved in Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo brand equity

With the PlayStation PSP placing ahead of the PlayStation, this poll would seem to indicate that
specific platforms can be substantial brands with strong equity to themselves outside of the
overarching brand.
Branding research and execution company, Stealing Share echoes the idea that brand equity can be
differentiated between primary brand and different platform brands. Their analysis highlights
Nintendo's successful attempt to invigorate waning brand equity with the departure from traditional
game console design and acquiring of new demographics (Stealing Share, 2010). Their analysis goes
further though in detailing that shifts amongst primary brand and secondary brand the difficulties
faced by gaming consoles. This problem highlights brand equity as a necessity amongst consoles
due to the proliferation of titles across many platforms and the losing proposition of "strategic
pricing, speed to market and a wing and a prayer" (Stealing Share, 2010).
Brand equity importance is clearly a key factor for gaming consoles as they strive to compete for
market share. Brand equity across titles can have an impact on the console brand equity and is
thought to also play a role in the purchase decisions of less informed consumers and act as a proxy
for quality valuation when traditional quality factor data is not available (Storgards, Tuunainen,
& Oorni, 2009). However, the

Who Is Responding To The Wii
9–709–448 REV: JANUARY 4, 2010 ANDREI HAGIU HANNA HAŁABURDA Responding to the
Wii? Kazuo Hirai, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), had just gotten off
a conference call with journalists. It was late August 2008, and the reporters were inquiring about
Afrika, a new safari videogame for Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) console that allowed players to watch
wild animals and take virtual pictures. Hirai could not help feeling frustrated. Most of the
conversation–like many others with Sony outsiders in the past month–had revolved around two
questions: Was Afrika Sony's answer to the casual games that were partly responsible for the
runaway success of rival Nintendo's Wii videogame console? And more generally, ... Show more

Responding to the Wii? Market Birth, Collapse, and Rebirthb The videogame industry got off to an
uncertain start in 1972, when television maker Magnavox introduced Odyssey, the first home
videogame console. Priced at $100 (the equivalent of $516 in 2008 dollars),c Odyssey needed a
television screen to project its very limited action. The system came with 12 games, including
versions of tennis and ping pong, each on a printed circuit board.5 However, partly due to some
uninspired marketing and distribution decisions, Odyssey's appeal proved limited. Magnavox sold
more than 100,000 game systems by year–end, but sales quickly declined and Odyssey was pulled
from the market.6 Enter Atari Around the same time, a young entrepreneur named Nolan Bushnell
was developing arcade games with the use of then–new microprocessor technology.7 In 1972, the
company he started, Atari, launched its first hit game–an arcade version of ping pong.8 In Pong, two
players batted a ball of light back and forth between on–screen paddles. The game instructions were
simple: "Avoid missing ball for high score."9 Pong was an immediate success: 8,500 arcade
consoles were sold in the first year.10 Bushnell

Electronic Arts and the Global Video Game Industry
Demographic trends
Gaming has become an important part of growing up for people who were born in the last 25 years.
Approximately 3.9 – 4.7% of total world population (250 to 300 million people) is ¡§very active¡¨ or
a ¡§frequent¡¨ player of video games or at least owns the necessary equipment. This target group
spends five or more hours a week playing video games. The United States is the largest video game
market in the world with about 50% of the US population (145 Million people) spending 6.5 hours a
week on computers and video games.
The majority of video game players are preteens, teenagers, and young adults (between the age of 20

Video games will move from stand–alone game systems such as consoles or PCs to become online
games accessible via many devices. Continuous participation of other gamers around the world will
make the games more challenging. Moreover, the high performance of next generation of chips and
3–D graphic animations will attract even more gamers to the market.
Global Markets
The importance of the non–US market is growing every year. However, regulations, cultures,
language and other attitudes of each country can differ from the US. For example, people play
¡§soccer¡¨, instead of American football and baseball and different rules exist for the game of chess
in Asia and the US. Therefore, the company and industry may need to customize some products and
introduce multi–language online games to appeal to the diverse global tastes.

Vision
Chairman Probst¡¦s vision for Electronic Arts is to overcome traditional entertainment companies

PS4 only other competition is Nintendo's Wii U. Nintendo since GameCube focused more on
younger gamers because it could not keep up with the mature rating games that both Sony and
Microsoft released. With Nintendo taking a back step, PS4 only real competition was Xbox One.
Playstation 4 has not looked back since their launch date. By early February 2014 they have sold
over five million units, compare to Xbox One three million units.
History of Microsoft's gaming console Late 2001 Microsoft took its first steps in the gaming
industry. They announced their first gaming console to the world Xbox. Not since 1996 has, an
American company offered a gaming console. By early 2002, Xbox completed with all of the sixth
generation console Nintendo's GameCube, Sega's Dreamcast and Sony's Playstation 2. In all
honestly, Microsoft only real threat was Sony's Playstation 2; as both consoles were designed for the
advanced gamer.
With the launch of Xbox, Microsoft also ventures into the world of online gaming, with their
service Xbox Live. Unlike Sony's Playstation 2 and Sega's Dreamcast, Xbox Live charged a fee to
play online against players across the world and gave subscribers the ability to download gaming
content to gamers. Like the other two consoles, gamers were required to have their own broadband
connection. Before Xbox discontinued, it has sold 24 million units worldwide. Four later after the

Entrants The three dominant players have taken the early mover advantage to grow their businesses.
High level of adoption and efficient production are essential in this industry because consoles are
traditionally sold at a loss and revenues are made up by licensing games to developers. This makes it
very a difficult industry for new entrants. New technology incurs high cost of capital in research and
development (R&D) and low product differentiation requires advertising and marketing. Their brand
establishment, together with their capabilities to make high investments in required fields have
helped the three firms to gain industry specific expertise, fast paced technological capability, and
strong brand loyalty which keep the threat of new entrants moderately low (Wingfield, 2013). Power
of Suppliers Each firm generates revenues from the profit margins on hardware (gaming consoles)
and software (game) sales, both suppliers are therefore integral. Suppliers of the main hardware
components, such as AMD and Foxconn, supply to all three companies but also to other industries
e.g. for personal computers and smartphones. While not solely dependent on the industry, gaming

Why to Select Third Party Tools to Manage Server and...
Microsoft has equipped the organizations with the Windows server operating system and other
server tools like Exchange Server, SQL Server, SharePoint Server, etc. In addition, there are inbuilt
server tools like DNS Server, DHCP Server, File Server, and Active Directory to create a complete
networking infrastructure inside an organization. However, the server and networking management
using the traditional Microsoft tools become obsolete at a level. In this blog post, we'll discuss how
these tools fail to serve the purpose and why the need of using third party tools arises.

1. Managing Users in Large Organizations
Let us suppose a case of a large organization has fifty different departments, each of which contains
hundreds of employees segregated on different positions. A large IT helpdesk of at least 70 or more
members is at least required to meet the IT requirements in this case. Suppose the IT staff is required
to create the user accounts of 200 new users who've to join in the different departments next week,
audit 300 users of five departments, and to keep a check on the file modifications on the file server

A Comparative Evaluation Of Private Cloud Computing,...
Author: James Madden B.Sc. Hons Title: A Comparative Evaluation of Private Cloud Computing,
Automated Provisioning, Deployment and Monitoring Comparing VMware vCloud Director
Orchestrator Vs Microsoft's System Centre Orchestrator Private cloud automation is a process where
the IT administrator may write scripts which automatically trigger events in response to certain
criteria being reached. It may be a new user requesting the provisioning of a desktop, it may be an
alert indicating a malfunction or failure of hardware or services, and it may be the monitoring and
charge back for the usage of a service. As a result of these requirements the deployment of an
Orchestrator comes highly recommended for the automation, instead of the administrator spending
maybe hours writing and testing scripts, the Orchestrator allows the administrator to drag and drop
the relevant graphics onto a canvas and then run it in the integrated test process prior to deployment
into live operation. This dissertation aims to comparatively analyse and evaluate the implementation
regarding the performance, cost reduction through reduced administration and usability of the two
competing provider's solutions, namely, VMware vCloud Director Orchestrator and Microsoft
System Centre Orchestrator. The scope of this study compared the performance and efficiency of
both platforms, although the cost saving in administrative time required is closely matched between
the two platforms the performance and

Putting The Edge On Xbox Live
Putting the Edge on Xbox Live Once upon a time, there was a pretty little system that pushed the
limits of what was possible in that day and age. In today's home–entertainment market, it is
becoming increasingly difficult remain competitive and stay in the game. According to the MIT
Technology Review (2015), Nintendo and Sony did not even make the list, with Microsoft landing
the number forty–eight spot; and yet, these three companies are the leaders in putting entertainment
in our living rooms, dorm rooms, staterooms, mess–decks, and anywhere else we humans decide to

Sometimes, something as simple as one's server can give that extra little edge.
Server–Side Hardware Requirements The very first iteration of Xbox Live did not even have a
name, as it was simply a server system set up by Microsoft to allow video game players the ability
to play with other players over the internet. The first Xbox, also known more affectionately as Xbox
Original, or XO, was released in 2001. This system was supported by 500 servers, according to Ed
Grabianowski and Stephanie Crawford in their 2006 article for Live Technology, which was
dispersed through four locations in three countries: the United States, England, and Japan. This
initial set–up is estimated to have cost Microsoft $500 million, and was considered by the company
to be one of the necessary start–up costs for their first entry into the console wars. Rich Miller
(2013) further reports that the server numbers jumped to over 3,000 when the Xbox 360 (X360) was
released in 2005 and again to 300,000 in 2013 with the introduction of Xbox One (X1). With
datacenter hubs all over the world now powering the Microsoft Cloud, Xbox Live has become a
worldwide recognized name. A virtual tour of the Microsoft Cloud can be found on their website,
"We power the Microsoft Cloud", and features video walkthrough of several of the facilities that

The Result of the 1st Round
In the early stages of sales, videogame consoles typically sell at a loss. As sales and production
volumes grow, console makers expect to get economies of scale that will allow them to lower costs
and reduce their losses. But economies of scale were slow coming to Microsoft: Miscalculations
about the cost of the original Xbox's hard drive and main microprocessor have led to some $4 billion
in operating losses since 2001, analysts estimate this over the management estimate mentioned
before ($2 billion)
While Microsoft grappled with its growing losses, rival Sony extended its already strong lead. As
previous gaming heavyweights like Nintendo and Sega lost ground, Sony was able to grab a 70%
share of the videogame console market. Microsoft still holds a smaller than 20% share, according to
analysts..
Not giving up yet, Microsoft promptly prepares the 2nd Xbox, and announces that they are in the
stage of development for the new XBOX.
The Next–Gen Gaming War Announced
Learning from its mistakes in 2004 Microsoft announces its plan developing a new Xbox, a whole
new console made from the inputs and the unsatisfied demand of the market.

Gaming experience. Without a doubt Sony announces their Sony PlayStation2 successor, Sony

However, analysts expect growing consumer incomes, the late–2012 release of the Wii U and the
2013 release of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to lead to a 4.3% revenue growth in 2014. Consumers
spent $1.1 billion on new physical games and consoles at U.S. retailers during the five–week period
from Aug. 31 to Oct. 4, 2014, according to industry–tracking firm The NPD Group. That is up 2
percent from $1.08 billion over a similar period in 2013. The year–long growth of new–console
sales is making up for lackluster video game sales. Future growth expectations for the Video Games
industry have been significantly moderated, as the picture of the market for gaming on mobile
platforms becomes clearer. Since mobile games are sold at much lower prices compared to
traditional console and PC games, their rise may foretell a slowdown of the video game market in
the United States. While the recent launch of the next generation video game consoles is expected to
rekindle interest in the more expensive console gaming market, the rise of low–cost, low–margin
mobile gaming market may weigh on the overall gaming market. Consequently, this is expected to
pull revenue downward as consumers pay less per hour for gaming entertainment. Revenue is
expected to reach $47.4 billion in 2019 as a result of the expanding population and an increased

Active Directory Management Tools
The Bottom Line
The Active Directory administrative tools simplify directory service administration. You can use the
standard tools or, use Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to create custom tools that focus on
single management tasks or to combine several tools into one console.
When you install Active Directory Directory Services on a Windows Server 2008 or Windows
Server 2008 R2, you will find the following tools on the Administrative Tools menu: * Active
Directory Users and Computers. Used to create, configure and manage objects in Active Directory
such as users, groups, computers and organizational units. * Active Directory Domains and Trusts.
Used to manage domains, domain trust relationships, domain trees and forests. * Active Directory
Sites and Services. Used to create and configure and manage sites and subnets. It is also used to
manage replication between domain controllers. * Group Policy Management Console GPMC). A
single console that allows you to view and manage GPOs across sites, domains and organizational
units.
Another tool found on Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 domain controllers is the Active
Directory Schema. Unlike the previously mentioned MMC snap–ins, the Active Directory Schema
snap–in is not available on the Administrative Tools. Instead, you have to manually install Active
Directory Schema and create a MMC for it. As the name

Nintendo's Disruptive Strategy
Nintendo Disruptive Strategy Video game industry is synonymous with names like Sony, Microsoft,
and Nintendo. A number of changes have been witnessed in the video game industry with respect to
competition and technology. Atari, a U.S. based company, and Namco from Japan are some of the
undisputed initial players in the video game industry. They literally brought the video games to
teenagers who accessed them in the shopping malls and video games arcades. Home consoles
however made it possible for video game lovers to play video games within the confines of their
homes. The introduction of personal computers in the 80s nearly revolutionized the video game
industry. However, the introduction of personal computers had no significant impact on the video
game industry as the proprietors still achieved steady growth. Video game consoles client base was
kind of confined to teenagers. Sony managed to penetrate the video gaming market save for their
insightful targeting and positioning, image conscious branding, and super graphic technologies.
These made PS very popular in the mid–90s. In fact, the entry of Sony into the video gaming market
spelt some doom to video game consoles because they captured new players. The industry
subsequently grew substantially. Video gaming became the ultimate entertainment especially among
the young adults who had disposable incomes (Farhoomand, 2009). When SONY launched PS2 in
2000, Microsoft felt that it could also eat part of the cake and

The Dominance of Microsoft's Xbox 360
The video game market has slowly and steadily created a larger presence for itself in the
entertainment industry. The largest part of the market's recent growth (from 2005 to the present) is
undeniably due in part to the video game console created by Microsoft called the Xbox 360.
Microsoft was the first company to release what is called the "current generation" console, and
successfully beat Sony out of the gate. Prior to the release of the Xbox 360, Sony had dominated the
market with their console, the PlayStation 2. It is because of Microsoft's ongoing innovations to

(Kubba) This amount of money is unheard of when it comes to music or film. In comparison, the top
most grossing films are Avatar and Titanic. (Internet Movie Database) The film Avatar earned $760
million within three years, and Titanic earned $658 million within six years, all of which are
comprised of film earnings at the box office and home video recordings like DVD or Blu–ray. The
technology created by Microsoft for their Xbox 360 is the first of its kind. A perfect example is a
device called the Kinect. This device utilizes a microphone and multiple cameras to enhance gamers'
experience, especially for game titles like Dance Central. Kinect utilizes motion detection in order to
spot interaction and display it on the screen accordingly. Another function for the device is voice
recognition. Rather than using a controller, the player can simply speak the commands and the Xbox
will do the said action. But the use for the Kinect has also extended far beyond its gaming origins,
spurring advances in medical treatment. (Knight) Using the Kinect for real–world applications,
including making medical diagnoses or three dimensional modeling was an unintended side effect of
the Kinect when it was released. At first, Microsoft seemed hesitant to allow people to use the
Kinect for something outside of gaming, but soon it was apparent that it could be used

Five Forces Analysis of the Video Game Industry
The video game industry is the economic sector involved with the development, marketing and sale
of video and computer games. It includes video game consoles, game software, handheld devices,
mobile games and online games. The video gaming industry has been growing exponentially in
recent years with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo competing for the higher profits in the market. This

substitute products or services, bargaining power of buyers, bargaining power of suppliers, and the
competitive rivalry among existing firms. Then it will be determined if the video game industry is

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have been competing for a decade with Sony dominating the market
throughout most of the years because of their superior technological products. The video games
industry faces an entirely new rivalry situation. In 2008, Sony lost its strong position on the market,
because of Nintendo's success with their dynamic Wii over Sony's high–tech PlayStation 3 and
Windows' Xbox 360. Although the Wii was technologically much less advanced than PS3 and Xbox
360, the Wii's cheaper price, ease of use, innovative motion–sensitive controller, and simple but fun
games, made the console a hit all demographics from 9 to 65 years old, male and female. All these
factors resulted in Nintendo's Wii dominating sales and surpassing Sony's by an impressive ratio of
2:1. With the competition in the video games industry getting more intense, the next steps of the
video game companies become more crucial for their positioning on the market. Due to the low
product differentiation, the next market leader will be the platform provider that manages to offer an
innovative gaming experience and a wider population of buyers that include all demographics.
Although the industry is being totally dominated by Nintendo's console, the industry is still
considered to show a

The upstream market undertakes mostly the manufacturing of hardware and development of
software. There are mainly four vendors in the manufacturing of hardware and these are consoles,
personal computers and mobiles. The mobile is viewed as the market of the future though very small
(Egenfeldt, 2013). The console market is very significant and Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony
dominate it. The software is developed in–house by third party contractors and is owned directly by
publishers. They have less autonomy but enjoy security. The downstream segment consists of
distribution, both software and hardware. Software distribution is organized by publishers who must
obtain licenses and for the authority to sell games pertaining to a particular console and must pay the
manufacture some royalties for each game sold. Microsoft has its own publisher and it is the only
player that integrates the three functions of software development, hard ware manufacturing and
software publishing. United States is the industry leader followed by Japan and then in the third
place is France. The distribution has been organized by the manufactures through local and regional
subsidiaries that will pass their products to retailers. The three major markets for the consoles are
North America, Asia and Europe, though Europe has a strong downstream position with small
importance in upstream activities (Zachariasson, 2012). There are high barriers

What is Corporate Strategy?
Corporate Strategy has been defined by numerous authors. Grant (1995) claims corporate strategy
deals with the way a corporation manages a number of different businesses. Lynch, R, in both his
third and fourth edition books on corporate strategy refers to Penrose (1959) definition of corporate
strategy as "the pattern of major objectives, purposes or goals and essential polices or plans for
achieving those goals, stated in such a way as to define what business the company is in or to be in

New business process and business integration solution
For the Microsoft team brining the revolutionary Xbox 360 to the marketplace, the new supply chain

you have the time to respond to problems, potentially saving thousands of dollars in unnecessary air

The new business process and integration tool also offered real–time visibility into its extensive

performance for on–time delivery and other measures. The system was fast, reduced errors and

Microsoft is one of three companies that currently dominate the console hardware market. These
three companies are Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. The Microsoft Xbox One controls about 29% of
the market share, while Sony PlayStation 4 controls 51%, and Nintendo Wii 20% (Duran 2015).
With technology changing everyday, increased competition, and similarity in hardware products,
there is a high level of urgency for Microsoft to come up with an innovation strategy that will enable
the company to surpass its competitors. For the video game industry many threats exist including no
strong regulations against piracy by illegal manufacturers, high costs of improving technology, the
stiff competition within the industry, and the rise in popularity of substitute products. Amidst the
threats, there are certainly beneficial opportunities for Microsoft to approach going forward. These
opportunities would include online markets, expanding internationally, as well as new technology
possibly in the form of virtual reality video games. Going forward Microsoft should invest its scarce
resources and time through creating new technology, as best as possible. Microsoft can do this by
creating virtual reality as part of their games, and in doing so differentiate from its competitors. In
terms of marketing, loyal gamers are what ultimately make

Stocking of brands is based on popular demand – recently, Provogue, MTV Style, and Benetton
have been added. In–house labels are available at competitive prices and target the value–formoney
customer and make up around 12 per cent of Shoppers' Stop's business. Sometimes in–house brands
plug the price gap in certain product categories. To cash in on this, the company has big plans for its
in–house brands: from re–branding to repositioning, to homing in on product categories where
existing brands are not strong. Competition between brands is not an issue, because being a trading
house, all brands get equal emphasis. The in–house brand shopper is one who places immense trust
in the company and the quality of its goods and returns for repeat buys. And the company reposed
its faith in regular customers by including them in a concept called the First Citizen's Club (FCC).
With 60,000 odd members, FCC customers account for 10 per cent of entries and for 34 per cent of
the turnover. It was the sheer appeal of the experience that kept pulling these people back. Not one
to let such an opportunity pass, the company ran a successful ad campaign (that talks about just this
factor) in print for more than eight years. The theme is still the same. In 1999, a TV spot, which

Microsoft The Largest Software Company
Microsoft the largest software company in the world was created in 1975 by Paul Allen and Bill
Gates (A history of Windows, era 0). As the number one software developer in the industry they
produce revenue "by developing, licensing, and supporting a wide range of software products, by
offering an array of services, including cloud–based services to consumers and businesses, by
designing, manufacturing, and selling devices that integrate with our cloud–based services, and by
delivering relevant online advertising to a global audience" (Annual Report 2015). In addition to
individual products and services being sold, they offer bundles of services and goods. Their products
include phones, servers, other intelligent devices, and operating systems for computing devices;
server applications for distributed computing environments; productivity applications; business
solution applications; desktop and server management tools; software development tools; video
games; and online advertising. They also design and sell hardware including tablets, PCs, gaming
consoles, phones, and many other additional devices and accessories. In June 2015 the
organizational structure of the company changed in part to their "transformation in the mobile–first,
cloud–first world" (Annual Report 2015).
Background/History:
Founded in 1975 by Paul Allen and Bill Gates, Microsoft was formed at a time when very little was
known about micro–computers and the effect they would have on coming generations.

Evolution of the Xbox Supply Chain
2012
Evolution of the Xbox Supply Chain
1.) What supply chain changes did Microsoft make between the Xbox and the Xbox 360? What was
the motivation for these changes? When Microsoft first entered the market with the release of the
Xbox in 2001 it was a newcomer in the console business. The company had neither an established
brand presence in this area, nor did it have a developed base of games and gamers in the market,
such as Sony. Therefore, the primary purpose of introducing the Xbox was to establish Microsoft in
the market, to develop a brand presence, gain acceptance among gamers and to prepare the way for
future products. Therefore, Microsoft's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when Microsoft started the development of its next generation console– the Xbox 360– it
recognized the deficits and problems related to its initial strategy: the company was operating under
too high costs in order to assure high product availability which was not the critical factor in this
business. The nature of the console business is about providing the customer with a cheap hardware
and a variety of games, in order to generate profits from games sales. Additionally, the first Xbox
was released one year behind Sony's PS2, Microsoft's biggest competitor in the market. This delay
resulted in a substantial loss of sales and consequently reduced game sales. Therefore, Microsoft
learned that the Xbox 360 had to be launched ahead of Sony's PS3. Accordingly, one relevant part of
Microsoft's new strategy was the "first–to–market" approach. Another essential change in
Microsoft's business strategy concerned its cost structure in the Xbox supply chain. Whereas the
initial strategy focused heavily on reliability, Microsoft changed its strategy to achieving reduced
costs and increased profitability. Additionally, the company insisted on owning the design of critical
components, such as the microprocessor and the graphics chip, in order to "control its own destiny".
Therefore, the supply chain network needed to be redesigned in order to support Microsoft's
strategic shift. So as to reach the desired cost

The Indian video games sector in 2011 was driven by the urban middle class/upper–middle class
population, who adopted both static and handheld games. Rising income levels, increased
availability of international brands such as Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox
360 as well as growth in retail chains were primary factors driving the demand for video games in
India.

The company has worked hard to restore its reputation at a time when competition between the big
three players in video games – Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo – is heating up. Most recently, Sony
has focused on the motion sensing controller Move, as well introducing 3D technology to video

Sony Corp faced a PR disaster in 2011 as it was forced to admit that its PlayStation Network had
suffered a cyber–attack leaving the data of millions of its users exposed to potential theft and fraud.

Research and development costs amounted to ¥ 427 billion or 6% of revenues in 2010/2011. Sony
does not break out R&D costs related specifically to its video game products, but has stated
publically that it is now working on a new Vita console which is due to be launched in Feb 2012;

  • 11. Microsoft, Microsoft And Microsoft Later, US Justice Department filed antitrust charges in 1998 against the software company, claiming that Microsoft had taken over the internet browser competition and limited consumer choice. In view of antitrust regulation in the US and EU, and increasing competition in the desktop software market, Microsoft was determined to move beyond the PC software industry. By formally recognizing the emerging business opportunities introduced by the new internet era ("Web 2.0"), Microsoft began to reinvent itself. It wanted to extend its software products into web–based services for businesses and consumers. It wanted to try new sectors such as media, television set top boxes, game consoles and other broader technology services. Microsoft aimed to transform itself and wanted to set a standard for accessing, communicating and doing business over the internet. Microsoft had entered various new markets in which it has no propriety advantages with it's new diversification strategy. Microsoft could not conquer all the markets alone as they would have to face new challenges and many industries were against Microsoft getting into their industry as they feared that Microsoft would monopolize the market. Hence, it improved its already existing as well as created new partnerships in the newly targeted industry. Microsoft hence, needed to constantly monitor the dynamic changes in the markets and adjust its strategies to capture opportunities in these markets. Microsoft continued to diversify ... PlayStation arrived in 1990s, which was the start of modern videogame age and with the entrance and the development of new technology such as high speed internet, this entertaining segment becomes more and more accessible and favourable among customers. Today gaming affects billions of people around the globe and it will continue to grow. The UK games industry was worth close to £3.5bn in consumer spend in 2013, up 17% from 2012. The forecasted revenue for video game console (1 out of 4 segments in videogame industry) will be 55.05 billion US dollars by 2018 (compared to 37.4 billion USD in 2012) (Anon., 2014)and the daily time spent playing video games per capita in the United States will be 28.3 minutes by 2015 (Anon., 2014). These numbers make this industry more attractive than its other entertaining competitors. In the Video– games Market the final product, "the gaming console" is directly associated with brands, as their content and quality generate a brand image. • 21. Microsoft And Its Constituent Operating Units Using a broad variety of academic and industry sources, our team has conducted extensive background research on Microsoft and its constituent operating units. On the basis of our analysis of the challenges facing these units, jointly and severally, we are proposing Microsoft immediately initiate a comprehensive shift in the strategic direction of its Entertainment and Devices business unit. Microsoft's inadequate response to the iPhone–era mobile revolution has seen it languish behind its main competitors in the consumer electronics space; in Q2 of 2014, the Windows Phone accounted for only 2.5% of the 301.3 million unit shipments worldwide (IDC, 2014). Likewise, while Q4 2014 Xbox console sales were up 14% over Q3, the competing Sony platform sold 70% more consoles during the same period (Harradence, 2014; Nelva, 2014). Microsoft's devices have failed to command sufficient market attention to ensure the company's status as a major player in consumer technologies. Growing market share in mobile and gaming has become a strategic imperative of the highest importance. We have identified three areas of pressing concern that simultaneously represent growth opportunities. First, Microsoft must rededicate itself to building first–party software that fosters creativity and improves the lives of users. This continues Microsoft's tradition of creating dominant, functional platforms across a variety of hardware and contexts, as it did with Windows in the PC– era. Second, by ... Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show. At E3 2006, the console won the first of several awards. By December 8, 2006, it had completed its launch in four key markets. 1.1.2 GPU (Graphics Processing Units) A graphics processing unit or GPU (also occasionally called visual processing unit or VPU) is a specialized processor that offloads 3D graphics rendering from the microprocessor. It is used in embedded systems, mobile phones, personal computers, workstations, and game consoles. Modern GPUs are very efficient at manipulating computer graphics, and their highly parallel structure makes them more effective than general–purpose CPUs for a range of complex algorithms. In a personal computer, a GPU can be present on a video card, or it can be on the motherboard. More than 90% of new desktop and notebook computers have integrated GPUs, which are usually far less powerful than those on a dedicated video card. I. NVIDIA

With the PlayStation PSP placing ahead of the PlayStation, this poll would seem to indicate that specific platforms can be substantial brands with strong equity to themselves outside of the overarching brand. Branding research and execution company, Stealing Share echoes the idea that brand equity can be differentiated between primary brand and different platform brands. Their analysis highlights Nintendo's successful attempt to invigorate waning brand equity with the departure from traditional game console design and acquiring of new demographics (Stealing Share, 2010). Their analysis goes further though in detailing that shifts amongst primary brand and secondary brand the difficulties faced by gaming consoles. This problem highlights brand equity as a necessity amongst consoles due to the proliferation of titles across many platforms and the losing proposition of "strategic pricing, speed to market and a wing and a prayer" (Stealing Share, 2010). Brand equity importance is clearly a key factor for gaming consoles as they strive to compete for market share. Brand equity across titles can have an impact on the console brand equity and is thought to also play a role in the purchase decisions of less informed consumers and act as a proxy for quality valuation when traditional quality factor data is not available (Storgards, Tuunainen, & Oorni, 2009). Market Birth, Collapse, and Rebirthb The videogame industry got off to an uncertain start in 1972, when television maker Magnavox introduced Odyssey, the first home videogame console. Priced at $100 (the equivalent of $516 in 2008 dollars),c Odyssey needed a television screen to project its very limited action. The system came with 12 games, including versions of tennis and ping pong, each on a printed circuit board.5 However, partly due to some uninspired marketing and distribution decisions, Odyssey's appeal proved limited. Magnavox sold more than 100,000 game systems by year–end, but sales quickly declined and Odyssey was pulled from the market.6 Enter Atari Around the same time, a young entrepreneur named Nolan Bushnell was developing arcade games with the use of then–new microprocessor technology.7 In 1972, the company he started, Atari, launched its first hit game–an arcade version of ping pong.8 In Pong, two players batted a ball of light back and forth between on–screen paddles. The game instructions were simple: "Avoid missing ball for high score."9 Pong was an immediate success: 8,500 arcade consoles were sold in the first year.10 Bushnell ... High level of adoption and efficient production are essential in this industry because consoles are traditionally sold at a loss and revenues are made up by licensing games to developers. This makes it very a difficult industry for new entrants. New technology incurs high cost of capital in research and development (R&D) and low product differentiation requires advertising and marketing. Their brand establishment, together with their capabilities to make high investments in required fields have helped the three firms to gain industry specific expertise, fast paced technological capability, and strong brand loyalty which keep the threat of new entrants moderately low (Wingfield, 2013). Microsoft has equipped the organizations with the Windows server operating system and other server tools like Exchange Server, SQL Server, SharePoint Server, etc. In addition, there are inbuilt server tools like DNS Server, DHCP Server, File Server, and Active Directory to create a complete networking infrastructure inside an organization. However, the server and networking management using the traditional Microsoft tools become obsolete at a level. In this blog post, we'll discuss how these tools fail to serve the purpose and why the need of using third party tools arises. Scenarios 1. Managing Users in Large Organizations Let us suppose a case of a large organization has fifty different departments, each of which contains hundreds of employees segregated on different positions. A large IT helpdesk of at least 70 or more members is at least required to meet the IT requirements in this case. Suppose the IT staff is required to create the user accounts of 200 new users who've to join in the different departments next week, audit 300 users of five departments, and to keep a check on the file modifications on the file server to trace the unauthorized accesses to the sensitive data. How much time will they take for these three tasks? Hons Title: A Comparative Evaluation of Private Cloud Computing, Automated Provisioning, Deployment and Monitoring Comparing VMware vCloud Director Orchestrator Vs Microsoft's System Centre Orchestrator Private cloud automation is a process where the IT administrator may write scripts which automatically trigger events in response to certain criteria being reached. It may be a new user requesting the provisioning of a desktop, it may be an alert indicating a malfunction or failure of hardware or services, and it may be the monitoring and charge back for the usage of a service. As a result of these requirements the deployment of an Orchestrator comes highly recommended for the automation, instead of the administrator spending maybe hours writing and testing scripts, the Orchestrator allows the administrator to drag and drop the relevant graphics onto a canvas and then run it in the integrated test process prior to deployment into live operation. This dissertation aims to comparatively analyse and evaluate the implementation regarding the performance, cost reduction through reduced administration and usability of the two competing provider's solutions, namely, VMware vCloud Director Orchestrator and Microsoft System Centre Orchestrator. Sometimes, something as simple as one's server can give that extra little edge. Server–Side Hardware Requirements The very first iteration of Xbox Live did not even have a name, as it was simply a server system set up by Microsoft to allow video game players the ability to play with other players over the internet. The first Xbox, also known more affectionately as Xbox Original, or XO, was released in 2001. This system was supported by 500 servers, according to Ed Grabianowski and Stephanie Crawford in their 2006 article for Live Technology, which was dispersed through four locations in three countries: the United States, England, and Japan. This initial set–up is estimated to have cost Microsoft $500 million, and was considered by the company to be one of the necessary start–up costs for their first entry into the console wars. Rich Miller (2013) further reports that the server numbers jumped to over 3,000 when the Xbox 360 (X360) was released in 2005 and again to 300,000 in 2013 with the introduction of Xbox One (X1). With datacenter hubs all over the world now powering the Microsoft Cloud, Xbox Live has become a worldwide recognized name. The Result of the 1st Round In the early stages of sales, videogame consoles typically sell at a loss. As sales and production volumes grow, console makers expect to get economies of scale that will allow them to lower costs and reduce their losses. But economies of scale were slow coming to Microsoft: Miscalculations about the cost of the original Xbox's hard drive and main microprocessor have led to some $4 billion in operating losses since 2001, analysts estimate this over the management estimate mentioned before ($2 billion) While Microsoft grappled with its growing losses, rival Sony extended its already strong lead. As previous gaming heavyweights like Nintendo and Sega lost ground, Sony was able to grab a 70% share of the videogame console market. Future growth expectations for the Video Games industry have been significantly moderated, as the picture of the market for gaming on mobile platforms becomes clearer. Since mobile games are sold at much lower prices compared to traditional console and PC games, their rise may foretell a slowdown of the video game market in the United States. While the recent launch of the next generation video game consoles is expected to rekindle interest in the more expensive console gaming market, the rise of low–cost, low–margin mobile gaming market may weigh on the overall gaming market. A number of changes have been witnessed in the video game industry with respect to competition and technology. Atari, a U.S. based company, and Namco from Japan are some of the undisputed initial players in the video game industry. They literally brought the video games to teenagers who accessed them in the shopping malls and video games arcades. Home consoles however made it possible for video game lovers to play video games within the confines of their homes. The introduction of personal computers in the 80s nearly revolutionized the video game industry. However, the introduction of personal computers had no significant impact on the video game industry as the proprietors still achieved steady growth. Video game consoles client base was kind of confined to teenagers. Sony managed to penetrate the video gaming market save for their insightful targeting and positioning, image conscious branding, and super graphic technologies. These made PS very popular in the mid–90s. In fact, the entry of Sony into the video gaming market spelt some doom to video game consoles because they captured new players. The industry subsequently grew substantially. Video gaming became the ultimate entertainment especially among the young adults who had disposable incomes (Farhoomand, 2009). The largest part of the market's recent growth (from 2005 to the present) is undeniably due in part to the video game console created by Microsoft called the Xbox 360. Microsoft was the first company to release what is called the "current generation" console, and successfully beat Sony out of the gate. Prior to the release of the Xbox 360, Sony had dominated the market with their console, the PlayStation 2. The technology created by Microsoft for their Xbox 360 is the first of its kind. A perfect example is a device called the Kinect. This device utilizes a microphone and multiple cameras to enhance gamers' experience, especially for game titles like Dance Central. Kinect utilizes motion detection in order to spot interaction and display it on the screen accordingly. Another function for the device is voice recognition. Rather than using a controller, the player can simply speak the commands and the Xbox will do the said action. But the use for the Kinect has also extended far beyond its gaming origins, spurring advances in medical treatment. (Knight) Using the Kinect for real–world applications, including making medical diagnoses or three dimensional modeling was an unintended side effect of the Kinect when it was released. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have been competing for a decade with Sony dominating the market throughout most of the years because of their superior technological products. The video games industry faces an entirely new rivalry situation. In 2008, Sony lost its strong position on the market, because of Nintendo's success with their dynamic Wii over Sony's high–tech PlayStation 3 and Windows' Xbox 360. Although the Wii was technologically much less advanced than PS3 and Xbox 360, the Wii's cheaper price, ease of use, innovative motion–sensitive controller, and simple but fun games, made the console a hit all demographics from 9 to 65 years old, male and female. All these factors resulted in Nintendo's Wii dominating sales and surpassing Sony's by an impressive ratio of 2:1. With the competition in the video games industry getting more intense, the next steps of the video game companies become more crucial for their positioning on the market. Microsoft is one of three companies that currently dominate the console hardware market. These three companies are Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. The Microsoft Xbox One controls about 29% of the market share, while Sony PlayStation 4 controls 51%, and Nintendo Wii 20% (Duran 2015). With technology changing everyday, increased competition, and similarity in hardware products, there is a high level of urgency for Microsoft to come up with an innovation strategy that will enable the company to surpass its competitors. For the video game industry many threats exist including no strong regulations against piracy by illegal manufacturers, high costs of improving technology, the stiff competition within the industry, and the rise in popularity of substitute products. Amidst the threats, there are certainly beneficial opportunities for Microsoft to approach going forward. These opportunities would include online markets, expanding internationally, as well as new technology possibly in the form of virtual reality video games. Going forward Microsoft should invest its scarce resources and time through creating new technology, as best as possible. Microsoft can do this by creating virtual reality as part of their games, and in doing so differentiate from its competitors. In terms of marketing, loyal gamers are what ultimately make ...
