If Shakespeare Can Do It
If Shakespeare Can Do It Because my wife has an English degree, she always defends her made up
words and grammar rules by simply stating, "Shakespeare did it, I can too." Now, I don't always
agree with her just–because–I–have–an–English–degree attitude, but we do agree on one small
thing: The written English language needs a singular gender–neutral pronoun that replaces the
clunky alternatives English speakers have now. English is a relatively young language compared to
most others still around today. Currently, we are taught that the use of singular they is incorrect, and
instead we should use either "he," "him or her," or "s/he," when referring to someone whose gender
is unclear. Others say English writers should move toward a singular pronoun to use with a singular
antecedent.
How perfect is it that English speakers already use this particular pronoun? Singular they. Think
about it. Typically, when people speak, they do not use "his or her" or "s/he." People use "they"
when referring to one person of an undetermined gender. For example, "Someone left their coat
here, we should let them know." That makes perfect sense to us. We know that "them" in this
sentence refers to the singular antecedent "someone."
Language evolves alongside it's society, because of this, you don't see many English speakers still
using "thou" to refer to one person. As many people know, singular thou was a more formal and
polite way of saying "you". Sometime in the 18th century, the use of

LGBT Group Reflection Report
When I first met Tabby, I wasn't sure if I was more struck by her bold sky blue hair or by her huge
smile as she shouted a greeting across the road. I vividly remember her head sticking up from the
other side of the car almost as soon as it had stopped, greeting me as though I was an old friend.
This meeting had arrived after four months worth of emails and texts back and forth across the
country, and I'm not sure who was more excited.
Tabby Besley is the sole founder of InsideOUT, a national organisation which works with youth,
whānau, schools and communities to make Aotearoa a safer place for all young people of minority
genders and sexualities to live and be in, and she was in Napier to run a workshop for Hawkes Bay
youth, on running QSA's (Queer Straight Alliance) and promoting awareness of LGBT+ issues
within New Zealand's schools. This workshop was attended by six different schools and the
information that came out was eye opening. Two male students from a private school described the
environment at their school, explaining physical fights and bullying occurring for students just for
'looking gay'.
While talking with Tabby I soon discovered that the portrayal of the LGBT+ community to everyone
else is often quite warped and inaccurate. Unlike what many seem to believe, such as student Josh
from Havelock North High School stating "only around I think 8% is (sic) gay", earlier this year a
survey released by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) showed

Gender And Gendered Communication
Gendered Communication
Most studies focus on how communication styles disclose identity and dominance in groups. Verbal
and non–verbal behaviors in interpersonal communication are critical in unraveling a person's sexual
preference or orientation. For example, Kitzinger argues that people can display heterosexuality
through talk, particularly by making explicit sexual remarks (228). However, most researchers have
paid less attention on how differences in gender communication can influence society. In fact, the
patriarchal system enabled men to exercise power and control, especially in verbal discourse. This is
to clarify that in the traditional cultures, some voices were dominant while others remained in the
background. Currently, women have continued to perfect the art of using the voice as a persuasive
strategy to achieve equal status. In this paper, I will argue that empirical evidence reveals that men
use a dominant communication approach that puts women at a disadvantage in the circumstances
involving social status and the construction of sexual practices.
Studies on gendered communication reveal that men exercise both power and high social status in
their communication. We see this patriartical actions taking place on macro and micro levels. The
"Greetings and Compliments" research by Bailey concludes that men want to enact a status
difference in their communication. Bailey writes that men use remarks to wield power while
perceiving their targets, mostly women, as people of lower social status (368). On a macro level, we
had explit examples of this throughout the last presidencial campaign. One prevalent Trump's
campaign controversy has been his repetitive comments and speeches against women. Acoording to
the Telegraph UK, in the first presidential TV debate, between Trump and Clinton, he interrupted
her 25 times in the first 26 minutes. Besides, according to Fox News, he said that 'I was going to hit
her with her husband's women and I decided I shouldn't do it because her daughter was in the room'.
Openly saying that he was going to use her husband's faults against her is a clear example how men
in our society continue to exercise power over women constantly. At the same time, using a verbal
discourse,

Bigotry In Australian Schools
nclusive, diverse and cultural competency ("Talking about practice," 2012. para. 1.) are key words
currently being used in reference to education in Australian school environments (Victoria State
Government: Education and Training, "Unity through diversity," 2014. para 1.). For these terms to
become actionable, wider community support is often necessary, not exclusively confined to
community supporting service clubs and business, but also from involved parents. The following
essay will question the actuality of Australian schools' claims of being inclusive, diverse and/or
culturally competent educators, and will show why having no obvious bigotry in a Primary School,
doesn't mean it is not there.

Persuasive Speech Essay
For this assignment, I reviewed Ivan Coyote's persuasive speech, "Why We Need Gender Neutral
Bathrooms," In this speech, Ivan told the audience that he was transgender and had a difficult time
using public restrooms. The reason being was due to the fact that Ivan was not a woman, and not a
man. Ivan used a lot of different persuasive techniques to get the point across that there should be
gender neutral restrooms in every public space and outlet. One of the impactful parts of this speech
was the use of introducing personal stories. This utilizes the term "logos" which means evidence and
reasoning. It is very difficult to open up and talk about past experiences that have heavily impacted
you in some way. Doing it publicly, or a greater cause and with a goal of bringing awareness is
completely different. Ivan was able to go to TED and discuss his/her story to the public, while also
knowing it would be taped and posted to the media forever. This was a very commendable and brave
thing for this speaker to do. It was heartbreaking when Ivan mentioned stories of attempting to do a
simple human everyday task, go to the restroom. Ivan talks about being glared at, being talked
about, yelled at, physically assaulted, and plain dragged out of the restroom by security guards while
still pulling his/her pants up. This is outrageous that because other people are not comfortable with
the idea of transgender people that they have to suffer. It is unfair that coming out and being their

Summary: The American Gay Rights Movement
Homosexuality has always been a controversial topic in the United States, and the twenty–first
century has brought about many new rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender group.
The American Gay Rights Movement has a long history, but the LGBT community is now starting
to have more rights and protection.
The gay rights movement started in 1924 with the Society for Human Rights in Chicago, the first
known gay rights organization in the country. In 1948, Alfred Kinsey published Sexual Behavior in
the Human Male, which showed that homosexuality was far more common than people thought. The
Kinsey Scale is a 0–6 scale, ranging from heterosexual at 0 to bisexual at 3 and homosexual at 6.

Romans 1:26–27 says, "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women
exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned
natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful
acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." The Bible does not
discriminate against the LGBT community, but it does say that homosexuality is a sin. God lovingly
warns against homosexuality and offers grace for those who have strayed from His will. Mark 10:6–
9 says, "But at the beginning of creation, God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man
will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So
they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."
This testifies against multiple genders, as God created just two genders, male and

Did you know that as of June 2016 an estimated 1.4 million adults in the U.S. are transgender? In
2015 the National Center for Transgender Equality conducted a survey that had 27,715 transgender
participants. 59 percent (16,352) of participants said they avoid the bathroom out of fear of violence.
A third of the 59 percent (5,450) reported that they would even limit food and water to avoid the
restroom. There should be gender neutral bathrooms open to the public.
Provided that even if it is a single stall bathroom there should be a gender neutral restroom. Using
the restroom is an everyday activity, and many people take it for granted. But for some people it isn't
an option or safe. In a 2015 study 16,352 of 27,715 people avoided using the restroom because of
fear of bathroom confrontations, assaults or even rape. Out of the 325.7 million population of the
U.S. there are 1.4 million transgender adults, not counting all the transgender youth in america. ...

A person with agency can make decisions and effect change. I try to connect the ideas of
socialization, performativity and gender neutrality. I try to show how gender neutrality would give
people agency. I used Judith Butler's theory of performativity as a framework for this analysis. I
connected how socialization forces us to "perform" in certain ways. Socialization is the process by
which a person what society expects for them to be. Socialization effects us from the moment we
arrived on the earth. I actually think that socialization is strongest when we are younger.
I focused on the early years for a very specific reason. Socialization starts with the parents. The first
way we understand a baby is by its gender. One study found that parents have different expectations
for boys and girls a day after the child is born. (Rubin, Provenzano, & Luria, 1974) The mother
declaring the sex of the baby is the first step of socialization and loss of personal identity. I think this
moment is important to focus on for many reasons. What the mother says will have long term
consequences it will define how the child is talked to for the rest of their lives. Newborns are
considered to be the most vulnerable members of society. The fact that so much of their identity is
decided at this most vulnerable moment emphasizes how oppressive gender norms can be.
Newborns have their whole lives ahead of them but they have already lost some control of it. There

Sex And Gender : Today 's Society
Sex and gender are words presented in very controversial topics surrounding the media in today's
society. But how do we know which in which environment to use the different terms? To what
extent do you differentiate sex and gender? Until recent years gender and sex were used in the same
context. Sex as defined by the dictionary is: "either of the two forms of individuals that occurs in
many species and that are distinguished respectively as female or male especially on the basis of
their reproductive organs structures". Gender, on the other hand is defined as: "the behavioral,
cultural, or psychological traits with one sex". From defining these terms, the sex vs. gender debate

An article in the Ms. Blog, titled Portland Oregon to Requite Gender Neutral Bathrooms, states that
Multnomah County is becoming one of the first to require gender–neutral restrooms in all future
projects in the county (Abadi 2013, p.2). This paradigm case is an example of the importance in
defining sex and gender and how to differentiate them from one another.
From an outsiders approach, we can argue our thoughts and opinions strictly based on facts, not
personal experience. The media has the biggest impact on our opinion in today's society. Due to the
fact that news is being produced instantly, but it can also be accessible at any time of the day and
can be received instantly, which makes it easier to persuade the minds of the media's audience. In
How Changeable is Gender Friedman writes, "Thanks to Caitlyn Jenner... transgender people are
gaining acceptance and a more understanding spotlight" (Friedman 2015, p.1). This statement about
the spotlight is referring to media speciation. Society as a whole has created stereotypes on what
they believe gender is. A girl is expected to play with dolls, have long hair, and other expectations
that as a society we view as feminine traits. A boy is expected to like to play in the dirt, have short
hair, and be athletic. By placing these stereotypes on a specific sex, male or female, you then doubt
your sex if you do not carry these qualities or interests. This is

transgender people using public bathrooms. The few exceptions are for custodial purposes, a person
needing medical assistance, a minor under the age of seven, and a person that has been temporarily
designated for use by that person's biological sex. This bill also takes away your right to sue the

The Pros And Cons Of Transgender Restrooms
Transgender restrooms have become a growing issue for many businesses in America over the past
couple of years since same sex marriage became legal and the LBGT community is being more
accepted socially. In America's society today, there is more acceptance of other cultures and
religious beliefs, unlike the past where Americans were less likely to accept people that are different
from themselves. This is an issue that has brought us together today so that a decision can be made
regarding transgender restrooms and how to implement the decision into all 400 of our stores
immediately. After doing research on the subject, I started to notice a trend in those who opposed the
idea of a transgender individual being able to use the same restroom as everybody else. When asked
why they opposed the issue they would say because it puts children and women at risk by letting
men use the same restroom as them, or something pertaining to the safety of women and children.
However, the fact of the matter is there is a minute amount of cases where transgender individuals
used inappropriate conduct while in a restroom of an opposite sex in the few stores that allow
individuals to use the restroom of the gender they identify as. In fact the cases where it did happen,
it was clear to see the individual was not transgender just a sick minded individual manipulating the
rules and not using them how the law intended. Some states have actually passed laws on this
subject. North Carolina and South

Gendered Bathroom Informative Essay
In the past few years alone, the world as a whole has become remarkably aware of the transgender
community. With this have come historic advances in civil rights for transgender people; however,
discrimination continues to be a significant problem. In the United States, one public issue that has
surfaced is public bathroom use; many individuals are opposed to transgender people's using the
gendered bathrooms of their choice simply because the genders assigned to them at birth are
different from their gender identities.
This opposition towards the locations in which transgender people take care of basic human
functions has led to the passage of discriminatory legislation (such as North Carolina's HB–2) that
require transgender people to use the gendered public restrooms that correspond to the genders
assigned to them on their birth certificates; it has also manifested itself in the form of violent hate
crime against transgender people in public bathrooms (Brady, "When a Transgender Person Uses a
Public Bathroom, Who is at Risk?"). Ironically, individuals who have opinions about what
bathrooms transgender people should be able to use explain their perspectives by claiming that
people could claim to identify as transgender in order to commit sexual crimes against individuals in

Gender Discrimination In Australia
2.1 Early Legislation
The Sex Discrimination Act (SDA) was introduced in 1975 to eliminate discrimination between
sexes. The Equal Opportunities Commission was setup under the SDA and had the power to enforce
this Act, the Equal Pay Act 1970 and other legislation to protect gender equality that existed at the
time.
In 1976 the then European Economic Community (EEC) implemented the Equal Treatment
Directive (ETD), the first European wide employment legislation applied to all members of the
EEC. Its principle was the equal treatment of men and women in employment, working conditions,
promotion and training.

America And Gender Neutral Bathrooms Essay
America and Gender Neutral Bathrooms
There is a long history of social groups being repressed within the United States of America. With
an ever–changing culture and a strong force against certain changes, certain ethnic and social groups
appear to be neglected by the lawmakers of America. One of the more recent occurrences of this has
been the LBGT community. Up until 2014, marriage was not even legal between a same–sex couple.
After gay marriage was ruled legal, a landslide of other reforms were brought to attention. One of
the more controversial topics being discussed today is the rights of the LBGT community in
accordance to public bathrooms. They argue that anyone should be able to use whichever bathroom
that matches with their identified gender. The definition of gender and the rights that accompany
them is constantly being updated and adjusted. Because of this sudden movement, social issues are
sparking outrage and debate on whether this argument should be implemented into society. This
issue has dominated the media and has caused chaos on both sides of the spectrum. Members of the
LBGT community should not be able to use whatever bathroom they please. The U.S. federal
government is backing the issue of gender neutral bathrooms. As Lisa Rein, publisher of an article in
The Washington Post, writes, "The federal government is strongly urging employers to give

Public Bathroom : A Safe Space Where They Won 't Be Judged
Unisex bathrooms provide trans individuals with a safe space where they won't be judged. For most
trans people, the simple act of choosing which public bathroom to enter can be cause for anxiety.
This is attributed to the standard gender–segregated setup most restrooms have. The problem lies in
presentation, or how well a person "passes" as the gender they wish to be perceived as. Essentially,
what happens is "a trans person whose appearance or body doesn't conform to what people think of
as male or female may run into trouble tying to use either restroom" (Friedrichs). The trouble that
one might run into in these situations can become extreme, and very dangerous. One transgender
person stated that in public restrooms they've experienced "[being] slapped, pushed, and dragged out
by security guards" (Friedrichs). With the inclusion of unisex bathrooms, this and similar problems
are eliminated. This is because if a trans woman were to use the women's restroom, the other women
in their could judge or attack her because she might not look like woman, so she shouldn't belong in
the women's room. However if the same woman were to use the unisex bathroom instead, no longer
would the other patrons need to worry if she belonged there or not, because both men and women
are welcome. In a room where both men and women are allowed, people are far less likely to be

Persuasive Essay On Gender Neutral Rooming
As Gloria Steinem once said, "A gender–equal society would be one where the word 'gender' does
not exist: where everyone can be themselves". Recently, Lehigh has been implemented something
new to better embrace the meaning of gender inclusion. The newest residence hall building,
Farrington Square Apartment, is now available for all–gender rooming, which means girls and boys
can live together in one room. Residence Life, Residential Service, and the Pride Center believe,
"This is an active effort to align Lehigh's living options with the Principles of Our Equitable
Community". Even though to some extent, it is hard for people, who traditionally lived in
dormitories divided into male and female, to become accustomed to the gender–inclusive rooming,
this decision is a huge progress Lehigh made in giving students a sense of belonging and allowing
them to experience more diverse living styles. It stands to reason that gender–neutral rooming is
definitely beneficial to give students a sense of inclusion, especially for transgender and gender–
non–conforming students. Ashley Lemmons, the director of Residence Life, wrote in an email that

Importance Of Sexist Language
Did you know that using sexist language is considered violence? Although some sexist expressions
appear to be harmless, they have become a major problem in our society for many years. Sexist
language is the language used in favor of one sex while the other sex is treated in a discriminatory
manner. (Lei, 2006) In most cases, sexist language reinforces the idea of the superiority of men over
women in many aspects of life. Within the English language, it is very common to find sexist
language in the use of nouns, pronouns, sayings, roles, etc. Therefore, it is important to know more
detailed these sexist expressions, their use and consequences in the society that we live. Over the
years it has been seen that sexist language lower women by using male pronouns like he, his, and
him instantly in contexts where the sex of the person is not defined. These pronouns tend to be
generalized when talking about an uncertain group of people or any person. For example, "Each
student must go to his class to meet his new teacher", "Each one should write his own fantasy story",
"The boss did not attend the meeting, he is very busy." In the same way, there are many professions
that are male–oriented because they contain the suffix "–man". For instance, "foreman",
"congressman", "councilman", "freshman", "chairman" etc. (Lei, 2006)However, these terms are
used for women and men commonly. Another way in which sexist language discriminates women is
in the use of affixes. This means that to form

Gender Neutral Bathrooms : Peeing Knows No Gender Essay
Gender Neutral Bathrooms: Peeing Knows No Gender
The issue of gender neutral bathrooms is one that has been very hot in the media in the last couple of
years. Should transgenders and gender non conformers be allowed to use their restroom of choice?
Are gender separated bathrooms really necessary? Think about it, there already exists to some
degree gender neutral bathrooms. When you go to any public location that has only one restroom or
has multiple restrooms that have the family sign on them. That means that anyone who needs to use
the restroom, man, woman, or neither, can feel free to use the bathroom without fear of judgement
for his/her actions. Why is that people can be perfectly comfortable with these types of restrooms
but be completely against having transgenders/nonconformers use the restroom they feel the most
comfortable using? The bottom line is this: everyone has the need to use a restroom. It is a basic
need that all human beings have, and they should feel safe and comfortable doing so. Gender
nonconforming restrooms should be made more available because it creates less time in line for the
restroom, makes restrooms more family friendly, and people who do not feel comfortable choosing
men or women's restroom can have a space where they feel comfortable and safe. Through this
essay you should acquire an understanding for why gender neutral restrooms are not just better for
trans and gender nonconformers, but for all people in general, as well as why people

Persuasive Essay On Transgender Youth
Y'all Need to Change
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." This old adage is repeated
on children's playgrounds across the country in the face of bullying and name calling. What happens
when the names actually do hurt the child emotionally, leading to physical self–harm? In a study of
transgender youth conducted by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, 30% of respondents
said they have attempted suicide in their lifetime. Many negative factors have influenced
transgender individuals into being more at risk for suicide, including bullying, harassment, and
shame. Whenever the topic of bullying comes up, people normally imagine the isolated incidents of
kids being pushed down in the schoolyard, rarely thinking of verbal harassment. In the 2015 U.S.
Transgender Survey, 54% of transgender respondents in grades K–12 have been victims of verbal
harassment, revealing the troubling reality that more than half of transgender youth are verbally
attacked before the age of 18. Verbal harassment induces self loathing and reduces the chance of the
child ever feeling accepted. One way to prevent the problem of transgender youth being bullied is to
try to influence children to not see transgender youth as different. Transgender persons will never
feel accepted into our society unless we change our discourse in the way we use gender pronouns.
The universal "he" taught to children is problematic. Even using the term "he or she" to address the
issue of

Bathroom Revolutionaries Summary
In this week reading, "Calling All Restroom Revolutionaries", by Simone Chess, Alison Kafer, Jessi
Quizar, and Mattie Udora Richardson they expressed three main points throughout the article. The
first main point in this article is that " bathrooms are easier to access for some of us than for others."
This is an issue that some people don't know about or don't even think is a problem. Recently this
has been a hotbed topic, within the media but I have been aware of this problem for sometime now.
Many of my close friends have expressed their concerns about the bathroom situation well before
this became a newsworthy topic. In addition, this topic has always bothered me because it is a
bathroom and people mostly use the bathroom for two purposes. ... Show more content on

I like the way the authors went about explaining the problem and the examples that were given
throughout the article. I also thought it was useful to show that multiple groups can come together
for a common cause even with their different visions. I never thought about the fact that individuals
that are wheelchair bound can not reach the tampon dispensers within the bathrooms. Also, I never
noticed that with the gender neutral bathrooms that there are not tampons/pad dispensers which is
very peculiar to me because they should be in there. Those are two aspects of this informative
reading that I did not even slightly think about before this article. I am unsure about what actions to
take on this article because I feel like there should be access to tampons and pads within the gender
neutral bathrooms but unsure on how to start that process. I know that it took awhile to even have
gender neutral bathroom on campus so I am unsure on how to start raising awareness of this issue. I
will begin to start using the gender neutral bathroom to reduce the stigma that is attached to this
bathroom to make it a more normalized

Restroom Paruresis Research Paper
A single stalled uni–sex bathroom would be a safe and effective solution for everyone. Vulnerable
people at risk for assault or sexual harassment would benefit from using a single–occupancy
restroom as well as people who suffer from a social anxiety disorder know as paruresis. Although
the word paruresis may sound unfamiliar, almost all of the public have some association with the
anxiety disorder. The pause before your bladder contracts when you sense another person in the
bathroom is a mild form of paruresis experienced in many individuals, however some suffer extreme
forms to the extent that the only way they can successfully use a restroom is if they are alone. Alexis

correspondence to every gender–exclusive restroom in order to grant protection towards everyone
and ensure privacy. Some people argue that gender–neutral bathrooms are safer because they permit
men to accompany women while they use the restroom as if every woman has a man to accompany
her at all times. These people have yet to experience the fear of relieving body waste in front of
others. When Oprah Winfrey served on a Chicago jury, she couldn't go to the bathroom attached to
the jury room because it was in public unless her fellow jurors sang to drown out the noise. One of
the songs they sang was Kumbaya (Beck). A subsequential sound accompanied when urinating is
not uncommon and a single–stalled restroom would eliminate the need for discomfort while
allowing those with paruresis or those who feel threatened being alone in private places to be at
peace when using the facilities. UC Berkeley provides students and faculty with a list of single–stall

My Civil Rights Project
Junior Year. Second Semester GLPO
This semester was a handful with working on major projects, writing thesis papers, performing in
my drama class and completing my first SAT. Out of all my assignments, one project that stood out
was my Civil Rights project, I was as able to enhance my skills for academic success by writing an
out of compliance letter to a handful of restaurants. I also go involved in other projects which led me
attend a Denim Day Rally.
I learned a lot while doing my Civil Rights project for my American Literature class but most
importantly I was able to improve my writing and my ability to work with others. Our group's goal
was to advocate gender neutral restrooms in restaurants. I focused more on the out of compliance

eye opening because I wasn't aware of how traumatizing these event can be for the survivors,
especially if the rapist was their own family member or someone they thought highly about. Some
of the people that told their story were very nervous since it was their first time saying it out loud,
I'm glad they were able to come out of the shadows they were trapped in for so long. Everyone there

Letting any Gender into any Bathroom, a good Idea?
Stores and different establishments around the world are having to face a difficult challenge of
letting people go into gendered bathrooms they assign themselves to, or having to enforce the rule of
boys in boys and girls in girls. There are many cases of this being shown in today's world. Target
was the first of letting people chose what bathroom suites them based on their choice of gender, and
now they are revoking it due to complications and backlash from customers, instead they are now
making a compromise that suites all but will cost them up to twenty million dollars. Although many
people will say gender bathrooms are foolish because gender is a choice, they protect the user, and

Analysis Of The New York Times By Cyra Mcfaddin
In Cyra McFaddin's article published in the New York Times titled "In Defense of Gender," she
asserts that male pronouns should not be eliminated from written and spoken English works.
McFaddin uses satire in an attempt to make readers sympathetic to a writer's problem of trying to be
nondiscriminatory by using gender–neutral language. Cyra McFaddin's goal is to convince readers
that gender neutral language won't solve any problems or advance feminist ideas because she
believes some take it to the extreme. She also thinks that using slashes and the term person makes
the English language sound cumbersome and will never please everyone. I disagree with McFaddin.
She is quick to criticize the progress that others are attempting to make without offering a solution to
the gender neutral language that she so despises. I believe that any progress forward is worthwhile,
and accuracy is paramount. Ultimately, everyone just wants to be included in the default. While
McFaddin attempts to use humor to cover her complaints of how bland or distracting writing seems
when gender–neutral language is used, and how it doesn't aid in the development of relationships
when used; inclusion of everyone is much more valuable and worthwhile.
McFaddin makes the point that when writers use a slash in their work, it can be distracting to read
especially out loud. She does this by saying, "In print, those "person" suffixes and "he/she's" jump
out from the page, as distracting as a cloud of gnats,

For The Majority Of People, It Is Understood Before High
For the majority of people, it is understood before high school what the difference between sex and
gender is. Sex refers to the biological differences at birth amongst males and females, but in today's
society the definition of gender is not so black and white. While the dictionary still incorrectly
defines gender as, "the properties that distinguish organisms on the basis of their reproductive roles"
the current meaning and proper definition of the word gender has evolved ("Gender"). Breaking free
from the constraints placed by society and the obsolete dictionary definition, this word has expanded
and taken on an entirely new meaning that appropriately corresponds with the way it is presently
being used and interpreted. The definition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of how Americans see gender today is laid out perfectly by Caitlin Ryan, a social
worker at San Francisco University, when she explains, "This generation views gender as a mark of
self–expression – they view it as a way of displaying their full sense of self" (Kott). As the times
continue to change and new ideas are implanted and accepted into our society words will also
transform and take on new meanings. The walls put up by the basic definition of gender have over
the years tarnished what it really means to be free and truly express yourself. Beloved actress Emma
Watson, who is a leading activist for gender equality, recently stated in a speech for the Heforshe
campaign, "It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals"
(Griffiths). Over a long period of time, the categorizing of different people into groups solely based
on their sex has unfortunately caused society to develop specific roles for each sex. These gender
roles attempt to classify certain interests, hobbies, and even jobs to one specific sex and challenge
those who oppose these unspoken rules, biting at their heels as they push against the grain. For
example, a gender role commonly attributed to people who identify as female is that they enjoy
cooking and cleaning. While females may or may not enjoy cooking and cleaning, this role is not
exclusively for females. Identifying males can also

Persuasive Essay On Public Toilets
An integral and necessary part of the built environment, moreover – our daily lives – restrooms
provide the real human need for safe and sanitary facilities when we go to work, go to school, and
participate in public life. Every day, many utilize the facilities of public toilets in workplaces,
schools, and the innumerable other spaces we pass through and occupy while outside our homes
(Kopas, 2012). As defined by Matthew Kopas (2012), a "public bathroom is any toilet facility that is
not located in a private dwelling," encompassing both traditional "on–street" local authority public
toilets and "off–street" toilets to which the public has right of access, for instance, in shopping malls
and commercial spaces (Greed, 2014), thus coining by the British Toilet Association (2001) to be
toilets "away from home".
Public toilets, therefore, should be perceived as a core component in designing quality and viable
capitals (Greed, 2004), which includes the planning and designing of cities towards accessibility,
inclusivity, and convenience of all the members of society (Bichard et al, 2014; Afacan & Gurel,
2014). Furthermore, ensuring public toilet provision to be accessible and inclusive is considered
vital in removing a severe hurdle towards a greater public productivity (Knight & Bichard, 2011).
However, toilet provision has remained inadequate in most communities, which lack even
rudimentary toilet access (Gershenson & Penner, 2009; Molotch & Noren, 2010). According to

things. Some of these things include, gender fairness, tolerance of different sexuality, and building
community. One of our goals this year was to get gender neutral bathrooms for any of the students
that may be feeling confused with their sexuality, unsafe, or feel that they don't belong in their
designated bathroom. It gives them their option as well and makes it comfortable for everyone.
Some of the pros we came up with include the safety and comfort of the students. We want them to

a one–person bathroom, there will need to be a lock but anybody could have access to the bathroom

Gender Roles Research Paper
Is it a Boy or a Girl? When a child is born, it does not know anything about the world. As it gets
older, the child learns morals and values from the people around it. One concept children learn is the
role of gender in their lives. Young boys and girls are given different messages about what they are
and are not supposed do in social situations, causing them to act and dress differently from one
another. Gender is not something tangible that happens; it is something perceived by American
society. Only by teaching children that there is no difference between men and women can the world
have true gender neutrality. As soon as a child is old enough to understand what is going on around

Many people have tried to study the psychological differences between genders and found that there
are very few. One such study, conducted by Janet Shibley Hyde, used meta–analysis to compare
men's and women's reactions to certain social situations. Using the equation difference is equal to
the mean score for males minus the mean score for women divided by the within–gender standard
deviation, Shibley Hyde found that most differences were close to zero, difference was equal to or
less than .1, and very few were large dissimilarities, where difference was above .66 (Shibley Hyde).
She also found that differences varied according to social context.
However, people's perception of gender due to society ignores these findings. Women who exhibit
agency, or assertiveness in the workplace, are considerably less likely to be hired for a job than a
man who has the same traits or a woman who is sensitive and motherly (Shibley Hyde). Gender
stereotypes also affect young men in an even harsher way. Society believes that girls are more
sensitive and more likely to have self–esteem issues. However, in Shibley Hyde's meta–analysis, she
found that there was almost no difference between adolescent boys' and girls' issues with self–worth
(Shibley Hyde). This could potentially lead to boys not getting the help they need because society
expects them to "take it like a man".
It is commonly believed in American society that young boys need a father figure to secure

and the CUNY Law School in Queens. On the other hand, some consider a gender–neutral bathroom
to be even more alienating to the transgender community, furthering the hold of traditional gender
binary by placing transgender individuals in a completely separate bathroom. This solution could
also off cis individuals the opportunity of the trans group. As effective as this solution is, it will not
entirely eradicate transphobic violence or abuse.
On a lighter note many have the opinion that the ladie's room has a strange tendency of having
significantly larger queues than the men's, so for those not affected by gender identity, wouldn't
having an extra bathroom available be beneficial? When posed the question "should transgender
people be able to use the bathroom of the gender they identify as?", most Clydeview students

Gender And Gender Identity
Gender identity is an extremely personal part of who we are, and how we perceive and express
ourselves in the world. It is a separate issue entirely from sex or sexual orientation. There are dozens
of dynamic and evolving terms related to how people identify. "Although Children are taught that
their genes decree whether they will grow into men or women, people are not born socially or
culturally female or male. Like race and ethnicity, gender can be thought of as socially constructed"
(Marsiglia & Kulis, 2015, p. 196). I identify as female because I was taught as a child that I am
female because of the genital parts I was born with. I also feel like I am a female. I do have my
beliefs on what being a female or male entails.
As a social worker in the field serving many teenagers, my thoughts have been open to the
transgendered and gender fluid movement going on today. I recently had the chance to work with a
questioning teen. This teen was born a female, but has felt like a male since the 4th grade. The teen's
family was very receptive to the teen's gender identity, but the teen still struggled with depression
due to the fear of rejection from the community. This teen exposed me to this new way of thinking
about gender. I identify as the gender I was born with, so I had a difficult time understanding and
connecting with their thoughts. The teen asked her family and me to call him by masculine pronouns
or gender–neutral pronouns. Throughout my treatment with the teen, he

America And Gender Neutral Bathrooms Essay
America and Gender Neutral Bathrooms
Gender equality is a pressing issue in the United States. The definition of gender, and the rights that
accompany them, is constantly being updated and adjusted. The LBGT community is fighting for
equality after being repressed for many years. Because of this sudden movement, social issues are
sparking outrage and debate on whether a certain law or right for LBGT people is to be initiated. In
many instances, these issues dominate the media, and cause for chaos on both sides of the spectrum.
The bathroom controversy exemplifies this. The LBGT community argues that anyone should be
able to use whichever bathroom that matches with their identified gender. Members of the LBGT
community should not be able to use whatever bathroom they please. The U.S. federal government
is backing the issue of gender neutral bathrooms. As Lisa Rein, publisher of an article in The
Washington Post, writes, "The federal government is strongly urging employers to give transgender
employees access to bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity, marking a new policy front
in the fast–moving campaign for transgender equality" (Rein). Rein argues that bathrooms need to
be made neutral, as it discriminates members of the LBGT community. Essentially, she argues
throughout her article that emotional issues are the biggest reason to allow this. She states, "Among
the many forms of discrimination advocates for transgender men and women say they face on the
job,

Transgender Bathroom Debate
A man stands in front of two bathroom signs, contemplating door which to enter: use the bathroom
of the gender to which he does not identify, (consequently feeling safer) or use the bathroom for the
gender he identifies as but risk getting kicked out or even assaulted? Fearing the repercussions the
man enters the toilet labelled male, praying the stalls are empty. This is an example of what a
transgender individual undergoes every day, just to accomplish something most people take for
granted. The Oxford English dictionary defines transgender as: "Denoting or relating to a person
whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex." Inversely, a
cis–gender individual's gender identity and birth sex do correspond.
The bathroom debate is just one small part of what transgender people go through: transgender
people have to fight for authenticity as well as equality. An average young person might have ID
when buying alcohol or their passport checked at the airport. However trans people's true gender
identity is questioned very often, and in a very different way. For example, for young people or
transgender individuals coming out it may be dealing with parents insisting ... Show more content

The Between Rock Stars And Celebrities
Although a lot has changed since the early 1980's, I agree with McFadden that the art of writing is
being diminished by the stance that the masculine based English Language needs to be neutered.
Gender neutrality is one of the main talking points in the United States today. The fact that Rock
Stars and celebrities are weighing in on the topic means that the majority of the populace is actually
paying attention. Although the biggest issue being which bathroom a certain individual can and
cannot use is taking the main stage, there are other issues like how to address a person in a writing
style. The English language is evolving under our eyes and we have the power to change how
Politically Correct or Literally Correct writing will become in further generations.
The flow of reading is a beautiful thing that can be lost when adding slashes and hyphens to identify
the same group as before. Without a proper guideline there are already more ways to identify a
group then I know. Different groups keep coming inventing PC prefixes to represent themselves
without feeling repressed by The Man. Another point is that you cannot change a language without
changing the society first. Whilst reading Shakespeare, methinks it arrant that language oft befall thy
present society. This was the normal tongue and writing language only a few hundred years ago and
now it is an archaic writing style that very few can interpret. My third piece of evidence is that
masculinity can be overcome by a

If Shakespeare Can Do It

  • 1. If Shakespeare Can Do It If Shakespeare Can Do It Because my wife has an English degree, she always defends her made up words and grammar rules by simply stating, "Shakespeare did it, I can too." Now, I don't always agree with her just–because–I–have–an–English–degree attitude, but we do agree on one small thing: The written English language needs a singular gender–neutral pronoun that replaces the clunky alternatives English speakers have now. English is a relatively young language compared to most others still around today. Currently, we are taught that the use of singular they is incorrect, and instead we should use either "he," "him or her," or "s/he," when referring to someone whose gender is unclear. Others say English writers should move toward a singular pronoun to use with a singular antecedent. How perfect is it that English speakers already use this particular pronoun? Singular they. Think about it. Typically, when people speak, they do not use "his or her" or "s/he." People use "they" when referring to one person of an undetermined gender. For example, "Someone left their coat here, we should let them know." That makes perfect sense to us. We know that "them" in this sentence refers to the singular antecedent "someone." Language evolves alongside it's society, because of this, you don't see many English speakers still using "thou" to refer to one person. As many people know, singular thou was a more formal and polite way of saying "you". Sometime in the 18th century, the use of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. LGBT Group Reflection Report When I first met Tabby, I wasn't sure if I was more struck by her bold sky blue hair or by her huge smile as she shouted a greeting across the road. I vividly remember her head sticking up from the other side of the car almost as soon as it had stopped, greeting me as though I was an old friend. This meeting had arrived after four months worth of emails and texts back and forth across the country, and I'm not sure who was more excited. Tabby Besley is the sole founder of InsideOUT, a national organisation which works with youth, whānau, schools and communities to make Aotearoa a safer place for all young people of minority genders and sexualities to live and be in, and she was in Napier to run a workshop for Hawkes Bay youth, on running QSA's (Queer Straight Alliance) and promoting awareness of LGBT+ issues within New Zealand's schools. This workshop was attended by six different schools and the information that came out was eye opening. Two male students from a private school described the environment at their school, explaining physical fights and bullying occurring for students just for 'looking gay'. While talking with Tabby I soon discovered that the portrayal of the LGBT+ community to everyone else is often quite warped and inaccurate. Unlike what many seem to believe, such as student Josh from Havelock North High School stating "only around I think 8% is (sic) gay", earlier this year a survey released by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) showed ... • 3. Gender And Gendered Communication Gendered Communication Most studies focus on how communication styles disclose identity and dominance in groups. Verbal and non–verbal behaviors in interpersonal communication are critical in unraveling a person's sexual preference or orientation. For example, Kitzinger argues that people can display heterosexuality through talk, particularly by making explicit sexual remarks (228). However, most researchers have paid less attention on how differences in gender communication can influence society. In fact, the patriarchal system enabled men to exercise power and control, especially in verbal discourse. This is to clarify that in the traditional cultures, some voices were dominant while others remained in the background. Currently, women have continued to perfect the art of using the voice as a persuasive strategy to achieve equal status. In this paper, I will argue that empirical evidence reveals that men use a dominant communication approach that puts women at a disadvantage in the circumstances involving social status and the construction of sexual practices. Studies on gendered communication reveal that men exercise both power and high social status in their communication. We see this patriartical actions taking place on macro and micro levels. The "Greetings and Compliments" research by Bailey concludes that men want to enact a status difference in their communication. Bailey writes that men use remarks to wield power while perceiving their targets, mostly women, as people of lower social status (368). On a macro level, we had explit examples of this throughout the last presidencial campaign. One prevalent Trump's campaign controversy has been his repetitive comments and speeches against women. Acoording to the Telegraph UK, in the first presidential TV debate, between Trump and Clinton, he interrupted her 25 times in the first 26 minutes. Besides, according to Fox News, he said that 'I was going to hit her with her husband's women and I decided I shouldn't do it because her daughter was in the room'. Openly saying that he was going to use her husband's faults against her is a clear example how men in our society continue to exercise power over women constantly. At the same time, using a verbal discourse, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Bigotry In Australian Schools nclusive, diverse and cultural competency ("Talking about practice," 2012. para. 1.) are key words currently being used in reference to education in Australian school environments (Victoria State Government: Education and Training, "Unity through diversity," 2014. para 1.). For these terms to become actionable, wider community support is often necessary, not exclusively confined to community supporting service clubs and business, but also from involved parents. The following essay will question the actuality of Australian schools' claims of being inclusive, diverse and/or culturally competent educators, and will show why having no obvious bigotry in a Primary School, doesn't mean it is not there. All children enter the Australian school system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In their websites brief blurb a lot is said, they are a happy school, with a focused curriculum on literacy and numeracy, there is a large social component, acknowledged in the mention of "respect relationships, fairness, and honesty", parents and the wider community, also play a role in backing the schools "Golden Rules" ("WRPS, About Us." 2014) is mentioned. The Wilmot Road Primary School's "Student" website page is an excellent example of successful cultural competency ("Talking about practice," 2012. para. 1) explaining how they work together as a culturally diverse school community, it shows of children learning bicycle safety. What is apparent in the photograph, yet un–literalised, is the bicycles and legally required, protective head gear, must be school owned property. This is determinable by the fact that they appear to be all identical. The equipment, combined with mention's of scholarships, shows that Wilmot Road Primary School ("WRPS, Student." 2014) and the supporting wider community of the Greater Shepparton area, is inclusive with not only culture, they also have equity in the area of socio–economics. Inclusion is completed without bias, when the students are all, supplied with the equipment required for the task, rather than having necessitated them into supplying their own, considering those from low income families, may not own a bicycle, or the correct and or fashionably appropriate style. The bicycles pictured are of modern design as are the helmets, this being a further testament to their understanding of the socio–cultural impact of consumerism as it affects today's ... • 5. Persuasive Speech Essay For this assignment, I reviewed Ivan Coyote's persuasive speech, "Why We Need Gender Neutral Bathrooms," In this speech, Ivan told the audience that he was transgender and had a difficult time using public restrooms. The reason being was due to the fact that Ivan was not a woman, and not a man. Ivan used a lot of different persuasive techniques to get the point across that there should be gender neutral restrooms in every public space and outlet. One of the impactful parts of this speech was the use of introducing personal stories. This utilizes the term "logos" which means evidence and reasoning. It is very difficult to open up and talk about past experiences that have heavily impacted you in some way. Doing it publicly, or a greater cause and with a goal of bringing awareness is completely different. Ivan was able to go to TED and discuss his/her story to the public, while also knowing it would be taped and posted to the media forever. This was a very commendable and brave thing for this speaker to do. It was heartbreaking when Ivan mentioned stories of attempting to do a simple human everyday task, go to the restroom. Ivan talks about being glared at, being talked about, yelled at, physically assaulted, and plain dragged out of the restroom by security guards while still pulling his/her pants up. This is outrageous that because other people are not comfortable with the idea of transgender people that they have to suffer. It is unfair that coming out and being their true ... • 6. Summary: The American Gay Rights Movement Homosexuality has always been a controversial topic in the United States, and the twenty–first century has brought about many new rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender group. The American Gay Rights Movement has a long history, but the LGBT community is now starting to have more rights and protection. The gay rights movement started in 1924 with the Society for Human Rights in Chicago, the first known gay rights organization in the country. In 1948, Alfred Kinsey published Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, which showed that homosexuality was far more common than people thought. The Kinsey Scale is a 0–6 scale, ranging from heterosexual at 0 to bisexual at 3 and homosexual at 6. Considered to be the founder of the gay rights ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Romans 1:26–27 says, "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." The Bible does not discriminate against the LGBT community, but it does say that homosexuality is a sin. God lovingly warns against homosexuality and offers grace for those who have strayed from His will. Mark 10:6– 9 says, "But at the beginning of creation, God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." This testifies against multiple genders, as God created just two genders, male and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Bathroom Persuasive Essay Did you know that as of June 2016 an estimated 1.4 million adults in the U.S. are transgender? In 2015 the National Center for Transgender Equality conducted a survey that had 27,715 transgender participants. 59 percent (16,352) of participants said they avoid the bathroom out of fear of violence. A third of the 59 percent (5,450) reported that they would even limit food and water to avoid the restroom. There should be gender neutral bathrooms open to the public. Provided that even if it is a single stall bathroom there should be a gender neutral restroom. Using the restroom is an everyday activity, and many people take it for granted. But for some people it isn't an option or safe. In a 2015 study 16,352 of 27,715 people avoided using the restroom because of fear of bathroom confrontations, assaults or even rape. Out of the 325.7 million population of the U.S. there are 1.4 million transgender adults, not counting all the transgender youth in america. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But eating and staying hydrated is crucial to staying healthy, so why put yourself at risk like that? The human body needs calories to survive. For a 16–year–old female, the body needs anywhere from 1,800 to 2,400 calories depending on weight, height, sex, and activity level. With starving and dehydrating yourself, you don't have as much energy, can faint, feel dizzy, and may have decreased concentration. Your body can't function without the things that keep the body ... • 8. According to Merium Webster, gender is "the behavioral,... According to Merium Webster, gender is "the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex." Our gender is not biological. Our sex is biological. Kathy Witterick and her husband, David Stocker decided to not reveal the sex of their child. In the birth announcement, instead of saying "its a boy" or "it's a girl" they said "We've decided not to share Storm's sex for now – a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storm's lifetime (a more progressive place?)." Witherick explains that "When the baby comes out, even the people who love you the most and know you so intimately, the first question they ask is, 'Is it a girl or a boy? If you really want to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A person with agency can make decisions and effect change. I try to connect the ideas of socialization, performativity and gender neutrality. I try to show how gender neutrality would give people agency. I used Judith Butler's theory of performativity as a framework for this analysis. I connected how socialization forces us to "perform" in certain ways. Socialization is the process by which a person what society expects for them to be. Socialization effects us from the moment we arrived on the earth. I actually think that socialization is strongest when we are younger. I focused on the early years for a very specific reason. Socialization starts with the parents. The first way we understand a baby is by its gender. One study found that parents have different expectations for boys and girls a day after the child is born. (Rubin, Provenzano, & Luria, 1974) The mother declaring the sex of the baby is the first step of socialization and loss of personal identity. I think this moment is important to focus on for many reasons. What the mother says will have long term consequences it will define how the child is talked to for the rest of their lives. Newborns are considered to be the most vulnerable members of society. The fact that so much of their identity is decided at this most vulnerable moment emphasizes how oppressive gender norms can be. Newborns have their whole lives ahead of them but they have already lost some control of it. There are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Sex And Gender : Today 's Society Sex and gender are words presented in very controversial topics surrounding the media in today's society. But how do we know which in which environment to use the different terms? To what extent do you differentiate sex and gender? Until recent years gender and sex were used in the same context. Sex as defined by the dictionary is: "either of the two forms of individuals that occurs in many species and that are distinguished respectively as female or male especially on the basis of their reproductive organs structures". Gender, on the other hand is defined as: "the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits with one sex". From defining these terms, the sex vs. gender debate is about one's relationship with nature and nurture in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An article in the Ms. Blog, titled Portland Oregon to Requite Gender Neutral Bathrooms, states that Multnomah County is becoming one of the first to require gender–neutral restrooms in all future projects in the county (Abadi 2013, p.2). This paradigm case is an example of the importance in defining sex and gender and how to differentiate them from one another. From an outsiders approach, we can argue our thoughts and opinions strictly based on facts, not personal experience. The media has the biggest impact on our opinion in today's society. Due to the fact that news is being produced instantly, but it can also be accessible at any time of the day and can be received instantly, which makes it easier to persuade the minds of the media's audience. In How Changeable is Gender Friedman writes, "Thanks to Caitlyn Jenner... transgender people are gaining acceptance and a more understanding spotlight" (Friedman 2015, p.1). This statement about the spotlight is referring to media speciation. Society as a whole has created stereotypes on what they believe gender is. A girl is expected to play with dolls, have long hair, and other expectations that as a society we view as feminine traits. A boy is expected to like to play in the dirt, have short hair, and be athletic. By placing these stereotypes on a specific sex, male or female, you then doubt your sex if you do not carry these qualities or interests. This is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Public Restrooms Should Be Public Facilities Where do you go to the bathroom when you are in North Carolina? Public restrooms should be available to all people in the public. North Carolina passed House Bill 2, people are now required by law to use the bathroom that corresponds with the sex on their birth certificate. This was a target for transgender people using public bathrooms. The few exceptions are for custodial purposes, a person needing medical assistance, a minor under the age of seven, and a person that has been temporarily designated for use by that person's biological sex. • 11. The Pros And Cons Of Transgender Restrooms Transgender restrooms have become a growing issue for many businesses in America over the past couple of years since same sex marriage became legal and the LBGT community is being more accepted socially. In America's society today, there is more acceptance of other cultures and religious beliefs, unlike the past where Americans were less likely to accept people that are different from themselves. This is an issue that has brought us together today so that a decision can be made regarding transgender restrooms and how to implement the decision into all 400 of our stores immediately. After doing research on the subject, I started to notice a trend in those who opposed the idea of a transgender individual being able to use the same restroom as everybody else. When asked why they opposed the issue they would say because it puts children and women at risk by letting men use the same restroom as them, or something pertaining to the safety of women and children. However, the fact of the matter is there is a minute amount of cases where transgender individuals used inappropriate conduct while in a restroom of an opposite sex in the few stores that allow individuals to use the restroom of the gender they identify as. In fact the cases where it did happen, it was clear to see the individual was not transgender just a sick minded individual manipulating the rules and not using them how the law intended. Some states have actually passed laws on this subject. North Carolina and South ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Gendered Bathroom Informative Essay In the past few years alone, the world as a whole has become remarkably aware of the transgender community. With this have come historic advances in civil rights for transgender people; however, discrimination continues to be a significant problem. In the United States, one public issue that has surfaced is public bathroom use; many individuals are opposed to transgender people's using the gendered bathrooms of their choice simply because the genders assigned to them at birth are different from their gender identities. This opposition towards the locations in which transgender people take care of basic human functions has led to the passage of discriminatory legislation (such as North Carolina's HB–2) that require transgender people to use the gendered public restrooms that correspond to the genders assigned to them on their birth certificates; it has also manifested itself in the form of violent hate crime against transgender people in public bathrooms (Brady, "When a Transgender Person Uses a Public Bathroom, Who is at Risk?"). Ironically, individuals who have opinions about what bathrooms transgender people should be able to use explain their perspectives by claiming that people could claim to identify as transgender in order to commit sexual crimes against individuals in a specific gendered bathroom ... • 16. America And Gender Neutral Bathrooms Essay America and Gender Neutral Bathrooms There is a long history of social groups being repressed within the United States of America. With an ever–changing culture and a strong force against certain changes, certain ethnic and social groups appear to be neglected by the lawmakers of America. One of the more recent occurrences of this has been the LBGT community. Up until 2014, marriage was not even legal between a same–sex couple. After gay marriage was ruled legal, a landslide of other reforms were brought to attention. One of the more controversial topics being discussed today is the rights of the LBGT community in accordance to public bathrooms. They argue that anyone should be able to use whichever bathroom that matches with their identified gender. The definition of gender and the rights that accompany them is constantly being updated and adjusted. Because of this sudden movement, social issues are sparking outrage and debate on whether this argument should be implemented into society. This issue has dominated the media and has caused chaos on both sides of the spectrum. Members of the LBGT community should not be able to use whatever bathroom they please. The U.S. federal government is backing the issue of gender neutral bathrooms. As Lisa Rein, publisher of an article in The Washington Post, writes, "The federal government is strongly urging employers to give transgender employees access to bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity, marking a new policy front ... For most trans people, the simple act of choosing which public bathroom to enter can be cause for anxiety. This is attributed to the standard gender–segregated setup most restrooms have. The problem lies in presentation, or how well a person "passes" as the gender they wish to be perceived as. Essentially, what happens is "a trans person whose appearance or body doesn't conform to what people think of as male or female may run into trouble tying to use either restroom" (Friedrichs). The trouble that one might run into in these situations can become extreme, and very dangerous. One transgender person stated that in public restrooms they've experienced "[being] slapped, pushed, and dragged out by security guards" (Friedrichs). With the inclusion of unisex bathrooms, this and similar problems are eliminated. This is because if a trans woman were to use the women's restroom, the other women in their could judge or attack her because she might not look like woman, so she shouldn't belong in the women's room. However if the same woman were to use the unisex bathroom instead, no longer would the other patrons need to worry if she belonged there or not, because both men and women are welcome. In a room where both men and women are allowed, people are far less likely to be judged or harassed based of their perceived gender. The newest residence hall building, Farrington Square Apartment, is now available for all–gender rooming, which means girls and boys can live together in one room. Residence Life, Residential Service, and the Pride Center believe, "This is an active effort to align Lehigh's living options with the Principles of Our Equitable Community". Even though to some extent, it is hard for people, who traditionally lived in dormitories divided into male and female, to become accustomed to the gender–inclusive rooming, this decision is a huge progress Lehigh made in giving students a sense of belonging and allowing them to experience more diverse living styles. It stands to reason that gender–neutral rooming is definitely beneficial to give students a sense of inclusion, especially for transgender and gender– non–conforming students. Ashley Lemmons, the director of Residence Life, wrote in an email that :"Students at Lehigh should feel a sense of belonging to Lehigh and should also find micro– community within Lehigh where they feel at home." • 22. Importance Of Sexist Language Did you know that using sexist language is considered violence? Although some sexist expressions appear to be harmless, they have become a major problem in our society for many years. Sexist language is the language used in favor of one sex while the other sex is treated in a discriminatory manner. (Lei, 2006) In most cases, sexist language reinforces the idea of the superiority of men over women in many aspects of life. Within the English language, it is very common to find sexist language in the use of nouns, pronouns, sayings, roles, etc. Therefore, it is important to know more detailed these sexist expressions, their use and consequences in the society that we live. Over the years it has been seen that sexist language lower women by using male pronouns like he, his, and him instantly in contexts where the sex of the person is not defined. These pronouns tend to be generalized when talking about an uncertain group of people or any person. For example, "Each student must go to his class to meet his new teacher", "Each one should write his own fantasy story", "The boss did not attend the meeting, he is very busy." In the same way, there are many professions that are male–oriented because they contain the suffix "–man". For instance, "foreman", "congressman", "councilman", "freshman", "chairman" etc. (Lei, 2006)However, these terms are used for women and men commonly. • 23. Gender Neutral Bathrooms : Peeing Knows No Gender Essay Gender Neutral Bathrooms: Peeing Knows No Gender The issue of gender neutral bathrooms is one that has been very hot in the media in the last couple of years. Should transgenders and gender non conformers be allowed to use their restroom of choice? Are gender separated bathrooms really necessary? Think about it, there already exists to some degree gender neutral bathrooms. When you go to any public location that has only one restroom or has multiple restrooms that have the family sign on them. That means that anyone who needs to use the restroom, man, woman, or neither, can feel free to use the bathroom without fear of judgement for his/her actions. Why is that people can be perfectly comfortable with these types of restrooms but be completely against having transgenders/nonconformers use the restroom they feel the most comfortable using? The bottom line is this: everyone has the need to use a restroom. It is a basic need that all human beings have, and they should feel safe and comfortable doing so. Gender nonconforming restrooms should be made more available because it creates less time in line for the restroom, makes restrooms more family friendly, and people who do not feel comfortable choosing men or women's restroom can have a space where they feel comfortable and safe. Through this essay you should acquire an understanding for why gender neutral restrooms are not just better for trans and gender nonconformers, but for all people in general, as well as why people ... This old adage is repeated on children's playgrounds across the country in the face of bullying and name calling. What happens when the names actually do hurt the child emotionally, leading to physical self–harm? In a study of transgender youth conducted by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, 30% of respondents said they have attempted suicide in their lifetime. Many negative factors have influenced transgender individuals into being more at risk for suicide, including bullying, harassment, and shame. Whenever the topic of bullying comes up, people normally imagine the isolated incidents of kids being pushed down in the schoolyard, rarely thinking of verbal harassment. In the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, 54% of transgender respondents in grades K–12 have been victims of verbal harassment, revealing the troubling reality that more than half of transgender youth are verbally attacked before the age of 18. Verbal harassment induces self loathing and reduces the chance of the child ever feeling accepted. One way to prevent the problem of transgender youth being bullied is to try to influence children to not see transgender youth as different. Analysis Of The New York Times By Cyra Mcfaddin In Cyra McFaddin's article published in the New York Times titled "In Defense of Gender," she asserts that male pronouns should not be eliminated from written and spoken English works. Cyra McFaddin's goal is to convince readers that gender neutral language won't solve any problems or advance feminist ideas because she believes some take it to the extreme. She also thinks that using slashes and the term person makes the English language sound cumbersome and will never please everyone. I disagree with McFaddin. She is quick to criticize the progress that others are attempting to make without offering a solution to the gender neutral language that she so despises. I believe that any progress forward is worthwhile, and accuracy is paramount. Ultimately, everyone just wants to be included in the default. While McFaddin attempts to use humor to cover her complaints of how bland or distracting writing seems when gender–neutral language is used, and how it doesn't aid in the development of relationships when used; inclusion of everyone is much more valuable and worthwhile. McFaddin makes the point that when writers use a slash in their work, it can be distracting to read especially out loud. While the dictionary still incorrectly defines gender as, "the properties that distinguish organisms on the basis of their reproductive roles" the current meaning and proper definition of the word gender has evolved ("Gender"). Persuasive Essay On Public Toilets An integral and necessary part of the built environment, moreover – our daily lives – restrooms provide the real human need for safe and sanitary facilities when we go to work, go to school, and participate in public life. Every day, many utilize the facilities of public toilets in workplaces, schools, and the innumerable other spaces we pass through and occupy while outside our homes (Kopas, 2012). As defined by Matthew Kopas (2012), a "public bathroom is any toilet facility that is not located in a private dwelling," encompassing both traditional "on–street" local authority public toilets and "off–street" toilets to which the public has right of access, for instance, in shopping malls and commercial spaces (Greed, 2014), thus coining by the British Toilet Association (2001) to be toilets "away from home". Public toilets, therefore, should be perceived as a core component in designing quality and viable capitals (Greed, 2004), which includes the planning and designing of cities towards accessibility, inclusivity, and convenience of all the members of society (Bichard et al, 2014; Afacan & Gurel, 2014). Furthermore, ensuring public toilet provision to be accessible and inclusive is considered vital in removing a severe hurdle towards a greater public productivity (Knight & Bichard, 2011). However, toilet provision has remained inadequate in most communities, which lack even rudimentary toilet access (Gershenson & Penner, 2009; Molotch & Noren, 2010). According to Kitchin & ... She also found that differences varied according to social context. However, people's perception of gender due to society ignores these findings. Women who exhibit agency, or assertiveness in the workplace, are considerably less likely to be hired for a job than a man who has the same traits or a woman who is sensitive and motherly (Shibley Hyde). Gender stereotypes also affect young men in an even harsher way. Society believes that girls are more sensitive and more likely to have self–esteem issues. However, in Shibley Hyde's meta–analysis, she found that there was almost no difference between adolescent boys' and girls' issues with self–worth (Shibley Hyde). This could potentially lead to boys not getting the help they need because society expects them to "take it like a man". It is commonly believed in American society that young boys need a father figure to secure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Gender Transgentral Bathroom and the CUNY Law School in Queens. On the other hand, some consider a gender–neutral bathroom to be even more alienating to the transgender community, furthering the hold of traditional gender binary by placing transgender individuals in a completely separate bathroom. This solution could also off cis individuals the opportunity of the trans group. As effective as this solution is, it will not entirely eradicate transphobic violence or abuse. On a lighter note many have the opinion that the ladie's room has a strange tendency of having significantly larger queues than the men's, so for those not affected by gender identity, wouldn't having an extra bathroom available be beneficial? When posed the question "should transgender people be able to use the bathroom of the gender they identify as?", most Clydeview students surveyed held the same opinion on the matter. Many were worried about removing barriers for people with the wrong intentions, e.g. rapist, paedophiles. However most were more comfortable with the idea of a gender–neutral bathroom. One problem with this seemingly perfect solution is that fact that many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can be challenged by the simple explanation that people committing crimes of sexual assault and transgender individuals have no connection at all. Transgender individuals using a bathroom of their gender instead of their birth sex is not intended to sexually harass other people in bathrooms, They have exactly the same motive as everyone else: use the bathroom, and leave, this is proven by the statistics that show no incidences of transgender violence in bathrooms. Furthermore, the number of transgender individuals attracted to the same gender as they identify with is remarkably small. In addition, a man cross–dressing as a woman to use the woman's bathroom could do it regardless of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Gender And Gender Identity Gender identity is an extremely personal part of who we are, and how we perceive and express ourselves in the world. It is a separate issue entirely from sex or sexual orientation. There are dozens of dynamic and evolving terms related to how people identify. "Although Children are taught that their genes decree whether they will grow into men or women, people are not born socially or culturally female or male. Like race and ethnicity, gender can be thought of as socially constructed" (Marsiglia & Kulis, 2015, p. 196). I identify as female because I was taught as a child that I am female because of the genital parts I was born with. I also feel like I am a female. I do have my beliefs on what being a female or male entails. As a social worker in the field serving many teenagers, my thoughts have been open to the transgendered and gender fluid movement going on today. I recently had the chance to work with a questioning teen. This teen was born a female, but has felt like a male since the 4th grade. The teen's family was very receptive to the teen's gender identity, but the teen still struggled with depression due to the fear of rejection from the community. This teen exposed me to this new way of thinking about gender. I identify as the gender I was born with, so I had a difficult time understanding and connecting with their thoughts. The teen asked her family and me to call him by masculine pronouns or gender–neutral pronouns. Throughout my treatment with the teen, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The definition of someone's "Biological Sex" Is the genitalia and XY Chromosomes someone is born with at birth. A person who has been born a male but personally identifies as a female would be transsexual and would need to ask themselves which bathroom they belong in. According to Jacob Tobia, a genderqueer individual, "For most trans people, particularly young trans people who are still understanding their identity, no gendered restroom is comfortable. That is why we must begin a national conversation about gender–neutral restrooms." (Tobia) Neither the Male nor Female restroom is seen as a safe place to do their business in the trans community. Some LGBTQ members decribried the personal battle they fight ever single time they choose a restroom. Going through the pros and cons of their decision before relieving themselves. On the other side of the Argument, people against Gender neutral bathrooms want to protect the privacy safety and dignity of public restrooms along with those that use them. This is including, but not limited to, Women and children. • 37. America And Gender Neutral Bathrooms Essay America and Gender Neutral Bathrooms Gender equality is a pressing issue in the United States. The definition of gender, and the rights that accompany them, is constantly being updated and adjusted. The LBGT community is fighting for equality after being repressed for many years. Because of this sudden movement, social issues are sparking outrage and debate on whether a certain law or right for LBGT people is to be initiated. In many instances, these issues dominate the media, and cause for chaos on both sides of the spectrum. The bathroom controversy exemplifies this. The LBGT community argues that anyone should be able to use whichever bathroom that matches with their identified gender. Members of the LBGT community should not be able to use whatever bathroom they please. The U.S. federal government is backing the issue of gender neutral bathrooms. As Lisa Rein, publisher of an article in The Washington Post, writes, "The federal government is strongly urging employers to give transgender employees access to bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity, marking a new policy front in the fast–moving campaign for transgender equality" (Rein). Rein argues that bathrooms need to be made neutral, as it discriminates members of the LBGT community. Essentially, she argues throughout her article that emotional issues are the biggest reason to allow this. She states, "Among the many forms of discrimination advocates for transgender men and women say they face on the job, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"It's not that I'm trying to dress up like a woman. It's that I've spent my whole life dressing as a man." A quote from Caitlyn Jenner, once known as Bruce Jenner. • 39. Transgender Bathroom Debate A man stands in front of two bathroom signs, contemplating door which to enter: use the bathroom of the gender to which he does not identify, (consequently feeling safer) or use the bathroom for the gender he identifies as but risk getting kicked out or even assaulted? Fearing the repercussions the man enters the toilet labelled male, praying the stalls are empty. This is an example of what a transgender individual undergoes every day, just to accomplish something most people take for granted. The Oxford English dictionary defines transgender as: "Denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex." Inversely, a cis–gender individual's gender identity and birth sex do correspond. The bathroom debate is just one small part of what transgender people go through: transgender people have to fight for authenticity as well as equality. An average young person might have ID when buying alcohol or their passport checked at the airport. However trans people's true gender identity is questioned very often, and in a very different way. For example, for young people or transgender individuals coming out it may be dealing with parents insisting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The invalidity of this argument stems from the fact that there are no reported cases of transgender attacks on cis–gender individuals in bathrooms. • 40. The Between Rock Stars And Celebrities Although a lot has changed since the early 1980's, I agree with McFadden that the art of writing is being diminished by the stance that the masculine based English Language needs to be neutered. Gender neutrality is one of the main talking points in the United States today. The fact that Rock Stars and celebrities are weighing in on the topic means that the majority of the populace is actually paying attention. Although the biggest issue being which bathroom a certain individual can and cannot use is taking the main stage, there are other issues like how to address a person in a writing style. The English language is evolving under our eyes and we have the power to change how Politically Correct or Literally Correct writing will become in further generations. The flow of reading is a beautiful thing that can be lost when adding slashes and hyphens to identify the same group as before. Without a proper guideline there are already more ways to identify a group then I know. Different groups keep coming inventing PC prefixes to represent themselves without feeling repressed by The Man. Another point is that you cannot change a language without changing the society first. Whilst reading Shakespeare, methinks it arrant that language oft befall thy present society. This was the normal tongue and writing language only a few hundred years ago and now it is an archaic writing style that very few can interpret. My third piece of evidence is that masculinity can be overcome by a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
