Community Gardens As Alternative For Industrial Agriculture
Community Gardens as Possible Alternative to Industrial Agriculture
Using Case Studies in Queensland, Australia
Brief History and Context:
Community gardening is "a solution emerging from grassroots environmental and food movements"
(Nettle 2010) While community gardens are often discussed as a progressive, new practice in
sustainability, community gardens have actually been cultivated "since at least the nineteenth
century," when community gardens were grown by many working–class neighbourhoods during
large industrial periods (Lawson 2004). Furthermore, during both World War I and World War II,
community gardens grew produce for middle–class families in times of war scarcity in Great
Britain, the United States and Australia (Guitart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Community gardens offer a possible alleviation of global pressures in agriculture, as community
gardens are small–scale, local agricultural modes of production
Urbanisation trends have led to factors such as "declining access to yard space and rising levels of
physical inactivity," (King 2008). These factors, combined with rapidly rising knowledge and
worries about the current dominant food production regime, have led to the re–emergence of
community garden projects across Australia and the world.
Motivations for Community Gardens: Previous studies on community gardens have reviewed the
various motivations and community benefits (Byrne 2012) and provide valuable insight into the
current movement. The vast majority of community gardens studies cite "capacity building" as the
main motivator of community gardens, as well as crime reduction, mental health benefits,
community building and physical health promotion (Holland 2004, Wakefield et al 2007). Apart
from environmental benefits, community gardens have also been shown to ameliorate education
related to plants, growing processes and production, as well as contact with nature, which is likely to
be otherwise severely limited in urban areas, and may also ease racial tensions (Shinew et al 2004).
Guitart's 2013 study on community garden practices in Brisbane and Gold Coast cities reveals that
the three most common

Being A Community College Garden
Seeds For Change Looking around Columbia State Community College with the stunning zinnia
gardens throughout the grounds, with ample land space and seeing recycling bins placed around the
campus, and non smoking signs on the doors, CSCC is on the right path toward being a green
campus; we can do more with a starting a community college garden. Imagine a community garden
at CSCC where the students, faculty and the community show off with pride, not only because of its
beauty, but because it enables a new set of learning experiences for students and our neighbors.
CSCC should be willing to fight for a healthier campus. With CSCC deciding to make a conscious
effort to encourage, a healthier way of eating by having a community college garden that will
encourage students to make the right food choice. CSCC community college garden will inspire
students and the community to become involved; in turn, this will cause a ripple effect, and people
will start taking care of their own properties. Community gardens have been around for years, and
they benefit the people who work in them as much as the people they feed. Not only will the
community garden draw people together, they also grow more than food – the involvement in social
community usually leads to long term relationships. The Agriculture Department at Columbia State
Community College offers a diverse selection of majors, including landscaping, soil science,
agricultural business, agricultural engineering, and

The Benefits Of Community Gardening
Another aspect of community gardening, is regarding those who participate in it. Community
gardens can be seen in many cities, with the community coming together to grow produce and
relationships along the way. However, it is becoming a growing trend to start this idea at a younger
scale. Many schools across North America have started implementing a garden into their after–
school or extracurricular programs. By introducing gardening to children at a young age allows for
them to take in many of the benefits that come from gardening, and encouraging new ways of
engagement. Gardening provides many hands–on activities for children, including designing,
planting, and harvesting the food (Yost, 2009). Many studies have shown that children who take
care of a garden, or live near one, are more likely to show an interest in gardening as they grow up
and develop a strong relationship with gardens and trees (Lohr, 2005).
In California, school gardens have become very popular and are continuously promoting them
through the State's Education Department. An example of one of the schools in the state is Le Conte
Elementary School, which not only has flowers and vegetables, but also livestock, like goats and
chickens. The science curriculum at the school is very inclusive with gardening activities, such as
propagation, transplanting, and composting (Ferris, 2001).
There have been many studies on the effects of school gardens on children. They have shown that
students who participated in a

Process
I did not think that this project would amount to much, it was a struggle, and took more effort than
everyone expected. We knew that it would be difficult to get the basics planned, to get donations,
and to finalize details but I did not think it would be that difficult every step of the way. Going to
class most of the semester made me anxious because I knew that it would end in heated arguments
and people leaving upset and not much progress. I do not handle conflict well; it stresses me out and
when everyone begins fighting it leads to me feeling helpless. After this class and this project, I have
learned to handle this stress better and that even though I am a quiet person I can still have a say in
how things are handled. Although the closer to the event we got the easier it was to plan, it was still
chaotic. I think that towards the end of the semester we wanted to do whatever was the simplest and
this actually helped the project. In our brainstorming we covered all different kinds of events to
have–from large and extravagant to backyard barbeque–esque, and the smaller setting seemed to
feel more in–line with what we wanted to achieve. If we had stopped talking and processing when
we thought we had everything figured out, we probably would have spent a lot more money for not
much more experience and it would not have been as successful as the event was. Most of the
details for the event were not decided until right before the work days or

Benefits Of Promoting Growing Your Own Food And Its...
Currently, in the Denver Metro area, there are more than 40 school–based community gardens.
These are projects on a much smaller scale than what I'm proposing. The benefits of teaching youth
the importance of growing your own food and its nutritional value would have a positive effect for
decades to come. The Colorado School of Public Health has data on Denver Urban Garden efforts
and how it has led to a tangible, positive change in the community's health and food security.
School–based community gardens help to create a bridge between the school and the surrounding
community by offering space for gardening to students, parents, teachers and neighbors. Teachers

This program could be partnered with the Denver Public Schools, Denver Urban Gardens, Learning
Landscapes, and Slow Food Denver. Let's start with the guidelines. School and educational based
gardens provide spaces for experimental hands on education. This also allows for incorporating the
full cycle of learning associated with healthy food; from growing, to nutrition, and then to cooking.
The school gardening program would be designed to involve teachers and certain primary
curriculums in subjects such as economics, social studies, and science. This in turn would create
respect for diversity and also promote self–growth. The primary purpose would always be
education. Having the school and the garden be a cohesive program that would be included in the
day–to–day culture of school would promote sustainability with the administration, neighborhood
volunteers, and parents who are all essential to the function of this plan.
Stewardship opportunities for the students could be provided through the outdoor classroom by
utilizing the grounds of the school site. Outdoor classrooms are engaging spaces for children; it
helps them develop both a

Planting Vegetables And Fruits Come From
We live in the 21st century where young children have no idea where vegetables and fruits come
from. All they care about are the screens in front of them. Technology is very useful in our
generation, but many people would not know how to survive in a forest alone. On September 10th,
around thirty students volunteered at the Heritage Garden located on campus for a good grade. We
were already complaining from the start about how we'd have to break a sweat while ignoring our
leader and her speech about our growing garden. The only people who weren 't complaining were
the elders, those who care about nature, and young children who were excited to plant. It gives us
young adults a bad reputation, allowing others to assume our laziness and selfishness. The Heritage
Garden can teach millennials today how planting vegetables can help the local food bank, result in
great benefits for our environment, and is an excellent outdoor classroom. Produce that are planted
in the garden are then donated to local food banks. My first task was to plant some vegetables. In
my opinion, that was the most difficult part. The caramel colored soil that was originally there was
rock solid. I stabbed my shovel into the dirt, and nothing happened. It looked completely the same.
Just like how the dirt in the drought would look like if it were one solid piece. Little by little, I could
see the dirt coming apart and falling into the center of the cone–shaped hole. I barely made any
progress before Steven

Community Gardening: Annotated Bibliography
The research found the average beds size and rate of community garden plot in NL are as; 10'x10'
raised bed, 4'x10' raised bed, 8'x8' raised bed, 4'x8' raised bed, 4'x4'' table–height bed, 3'x3' child's
raised bed. It is very difficult to fix the rate charged for a community garden plot in NL as factors
such as location, demand, and local economic conditions come into play. Community gardens rely
extensively on funding and volunteers. The rate charged for a community garden plot in NL ranges
from $10 to $60 depending on plot size.

The social value system to supplementary farming was drastically affected and reduced since late
nineties. Though few nonprofit and voluntary initiatives are always trying to develop the food
system to bring food sovereignty, but their initiatives merely became a continuous process due to
lack of volunteers, good partnerships and collaborations, inadequate financing and lack of
institutional education. In this situation community garden as an emerging initiative can facilitate
food sovereignty in small scale and can be a great tool to create a social movement towards food
sovereignty. In order to do so, community garden initiators need policy and financial supports as

Benefits Of Urban Community Gardening
Benefits of Urban Community Gardening

Research question
What are the significant benefits offered through urban community gardening, which would cause
one to participate in the practice?
Thesis statement
There are many advantages to participation in community gardening because gardening reduces air
pollution and heat islands, helps in crime prevention, and most significant of all can affect one's
health.
Literature Review
Kathleen Wolf and Alicia Robbins presented different benefits in the article "Metro Nature,
Environmental Health and Economic Value" in an effort to present the economic values associated
with exposure to nature outline many of the positive advantages associated with ones exposure to
different elements of nature, such as urban greenspaces. Important health benefits relate to reduced
air pollution and increases to an active lifestyle. The additional physical activity helps to reduce
obesity, lower blood pressure, and produce extended life spans.
In the survey "Allotment Gardening and Health: A Comparative Survey" other positive benefits
associated with gardening are identified. While the article is written to compare the different effects
of allotment gardening compared to those people without allotments, generally the overall
advantages associated with gardening are recognized regardless of whether a gardener is working
with a small group of family members or a larger group of community gardeners.

Black Culture And Its Effects On Society
Urban areas are known for their large amounts of minority populations while rural areas are usually
associated with people of Caucasian descent. The word 'urban' has become synonymous with the
phrase, inner city. Historically, these terms strengthen the idea of "white flight" which is defined as
"the departure of whites from places (such as urban neighborhoods or schools) increasingly or
predominantly populated by minorities" (Merriam–Webster). Both of these words are often used as
adjectives to describe people who are lazy and insolent. This feeds directly into harmful stereotypes
about minority populations such as black men being unintelligent and lazy human beings who
depend on welfare. These stereotypes do not discuss the fact that ... Show more content on

Politicians need to be more open to allowing vacant lots to be turned into gardens that can be used
by the community.
As seen by the film Maquilapolis, there are multiple environmental issues that disproportionately
impact oppressed groups. These issues can often be tied to most of the world's relationship with
capitalism. In Maquilapolis, the women are in such a low socioeconomic status that they can't afford
to find another job or move out of their neighborhood. Similarly, food deserts (parts of the country
lacking fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy foods) are prominent in minority areas because they
don't have the transportation or money for nutritious foods. Recently, it's been discovered that
income isn't the only factor impacting food availability, "Hispanic and Black neighborhood were
still more likely to have smaller corner stores and less likely to have large supermarkets, compared
to their white counterparts. These smaller stores are less likely to have fresh fruits and vegetable,
whole grains, and yogurt, which are commonplace in larger supermarket."
(http://jointcenter.org/blog/food–deserts–more–common–minority–communities) Although urban
community gardens can't provide whole grains and yogurt, they can produce fresh fruits and

The Food Areas Of The United States Essay
As the population increases and urbanization continues to develop and become more popular, an
important, life–sustaining product is left behind. Most relevant in western civilization, the scarcity
of locally grown and produced food is a problem that exists, whether people realize it or not. Per the
Food Access Research Atlas, provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, there are
8,959 food deserts in the united states as of 2010 ¹. An Urban Food desert is any location deprived of
supermarkets and other access to fresh fruits and vegetables, which usually plagues places of lower
socioeconomic status. The low demand for food is attributed to lack of affordability and education,
and perceptibly retailers ought not bring their business to places with very little demand for the
product. If these deserts are ever to be omitted from the world, it is not enough to hope for the
eventual emergence of supermarkets or farms, communities must work together to improve their
range of reachable sustenance. It is every person's duty, as a member of humanity, to aid in fixing
the problem and ultimately improving the world, which gives way to defining the common good
approach to ethical reasoning. Using the common good approach, a simple, yet collectively
beneficial solution is the emergence of local gardens/greenhouses, which would largely combat the
detrimental dining options of an urban food desert. If the movement to a more horticultural lifestyle
is ever to work, first,

As discussed by both Hinchcliffe et al.(2005) and Latour (2005), there is a need for representation of
both living and nonliving actors. These actors exercise agency through both immediate action and
long term consequences of their influence over other actors in the ecosystem. It is arguable that the
"endangered" status held by the water voles in Hinchcliffe et al.(2005) and other endangered species
are treated comparably to people who carry the "vulnerable adult" status. This status rallies support
from other people to exercise agency in the form of physical and legal protection on their behalf.
The vast majority of species in any given ecosystem remain unrepresented and often completely
unrecognized leaving them vulnerable to human activities that have the potential of disrupting or
completely destroying the balance of their ecosystem. As Latour (2005) argues, when considering
our relationships with these non–human actors interactions should be examined critically with
respect to each unique set of relationships and interactions rather than making broad and
disconnected determinations based solely on human desires to shape and control the outcome of
these interactions. In

My Personal Experience : My Experience In South Africa
It's not a topic that my parents like to discuss with me very often, but I think it's important for them
to tell me about their experiences in South Africa. Of course here in the putrid city of Cleveland, it's
not the same, but it's better than what I know about South Africa. Now that I'm on that topic, I might
as well just tell you about it. My parents told me that in South Africa, you were never sure if there
would ever be a "tomorrow." There was always the constant threat of being hurt for your food or
belongings. So that's why they brought me to Cleveland before birth.
I grew up in Cleveland, going to all the local schools. It was hard for me and my family to
communicate with others because we had to adapt from our original language Afrikaans to English.
I eventually learned most of what I needed to speak fluently around the age of 8. At 25, after
graduating from Ohio State University, I applied my gardening and baking skills to open up a local
garden shop where I can help people and teach them how to plant different things properly.
Kim walked into my shop, I asked her what she was looking to plant. "Pumpkins," she said. "I want
to grow my own pumpkins for my family to carve."
I took her into my back room and gave her a quick tutorial on how to maintain her pumpkins
correctly.

pumpkins won't grow! You and Royce both want to grow pumpkins, so why don't you guys team

An Eco Friendly Practice For Your Lawn And Garden
It seems so ridiculous that gardening would be an area where we need to be environmentally
conscious. After all, if you are growing green things, it should be an eco–friendly practice by
default, shouldn 't it? Unfortunately, mostly for the sake of modern convenience, there are now so
many chemicals tied up in gardening – either to make your veggies pest–free and fruitful or to make
certain your flowers are weed free and extra large – that we almost negate the positive ecological
impact of growing plants. Fortunately, there are ways to have it all – well fertilized, bug–less plants,
and a clear, green conscience. All you need to do is use all natural, environmentally sound products
for your lawn and garden. The first product you want to check out is a little thing called
diatomaceous earth. Frankly, it has so many benefits, it is almost like cheating. It is both a pest
control agent and a growth medium, and it retains water and nutrients, while assisting with drainage.
The primary drawbacks are the potential for harm to helpful insects and the dangers of inhalation,
depending on which type you buy (though these are no different than the risks with chemical
insecticides). If you visit your local nursery or big box home improvement store, they should be able
to help you find some easily. It may sound like a joke, but if you are looking for natural, eco–
friendly fertilizer with little or no odor, TerraCycle 's Worm Poop does an excellent job and you can

How To Make A Water Garden Essay
You can have a beautiful and calming water garden no matter how much or how little space you
have. All you need is a weekend and a little planning to have all the beauty, tranquility and calming
atmosphere you desire at an affordable price. Your first decision will be to find a spot for your
garden. Most people choose spots where there is a good amount of shade in the afternoon and early
evening. You will need at least five hours of good sunlight a day for your water plants since most
water plants need direct sunlight to survive and be healthy. It 's not recommended that you place
your water garden directly under a shade tree with over–hanging branches that will drop leaves into
your pond, unless you like cleaning leaves out of it everyday. It may help to remember while
choosing a spot for your pond that water is heavy, about 8 pounds per gallon, the addition of plants
and fish will make things pretty heavy so be sure the area you choose will hold everything plus the
pump. Some people like a variety of plants, fish or accessories in their ponds, while others only
want two or three things, this all depends on you and what pleases your senses. Don 't forget to place
your garden close to an easily accessible water source since you will need to replace water levels
and keep things fresh and stable everyday. Next, you will need to decide what type of enclosure you
're going to build. Do not use chemically treated wood since it contains arsenic and is not eco
friendly.

Environmental, Cultural And Social Benefits Of Community...
1. What are the environmental, cultural and social benefits of community gardens in New York?
The environment will benefit from community gardens because it provides green spaces in
communities that are surrounded by concrete and high rises. Urban gardening is critical to
sustaining the environment for the future. Many of the residents are from low income families and
do not have the social–economical means to access fresh food and open recreational space and
services. Families find it hard to pay bills and afford better foods for their family and food stamps
are not enough. A food pantry was established in the city that fed hungry residents who need
assistance. 3000 to 20000 pounds of food are given away to about 200 families weekly. Produce
such as cucumbers, apples, cherries, pears, peaches, plums, peppers from Caribbean and flowers are
grown.
New York City is below the recommended ratio of open green space in ratio of two and a half acres
per 1000 and residence and the problem is worse in low income areas that do not have the
opportunities or space to create them. It is recommended that urban areas have at Urban gardening
because the it is the only means in which families who live there have access to fresh grown food.

children to run and play. Food on American plates traveled 1500 miles to get there. Price of oil is

Community Gardens And Green Spaces
Rationale Purpose The purpose of this speech is to provide information and encourage city residents
to invest in gardens in their neighborhoods by showing that community gardens increase property
value as well as improve the emotional and physical well–being of their citizens who participate in
the project. Additionally, community fruit and vegetable gardens can help provide fresh produce for
residents on fixed incomes for little to no cost outside of volunteer time. Audience My ideal
audience will consist of community leaders, urban planners, neighborhood improvement groups,
gardening clubs and the ordinary citizens of the city who are interested in improving their lives,
health and neighborhoods. Significance This topic is very significant because over the past several
decades, urban and neighborhood planners have strayed away from green spaces throughout their
projects. Green spaces encourage interaction among citizens as well as improving the environment
in the vicinity. In this divisive political climate, it is almost necessary to provide areas where
families and individuals can come together and enjoy a less stressful environment. I. Introduction a.

Childhood Hunger In America
If I could change one thing about my community, it would be how we deal with the issue of
childhood hunger. It often goes unnoticed, but there are many children going hungry at night. It is a
real issue in America and here in the Birmingham area. No child should ever go to bed hungry at
night wondering where their next meal is going to come from. That is why I believe our business
community should partner with local non–profits and churches to develop more community gardens.
Community gardens are an affordable way to feed those in need and for children to learn how to
grow their own food to support healthier lifestyles. Implementing multiple community gardens in
the Birmingham metro area (similar to Jones Valley Farm) would allow children to

Summary Of ' The Power Of Home Gardens '
Austin Matzelle Ms. Martha Silano English 201 OAS September 27 2016
The Power of Home Gardens in America
TEDxDirigo hosted Roger Doiron to provide listeners with his message: A subversive plot: how to
grow a revolution in your own backyard. Throughout his talk, Doiron passionately explains to
listeners how growing a backyard garden can help someone retake control over an aspect of their
life. Their food supply.
"Food is a form of energy, it's what our bodies run on. But it is also a form of power." (Roger
Doiron) Doiron believes that when people venture into building their own gardens, they gain control
over their own diets, health, and pocketbooks. He alludes to how citizens taking this power
subversively undermine the power of corporations usually in charge of the general populations
health and food needs.
"We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic ... and in a parallel world we see that hunger is on the
rise." (Doiron) The next angle Doiron takes is attacking the major problems our planet is facing. The
obesity rates in many countries has been steadily rising, yet hundreds of millions are malnourished.
Our planet's resources are also dwindling, the amount of land we can grow on, our water supply, and
even the genetic diversity of the plants we consume are all under attack due to the inflation of
human populations.
Matzelle 1
With our resources under attack, and many eating too much or too little food, Doiron has faith
that individuals gardening can create a

What Are The Pluses And Minuses Of Community Gardens
Pluses and Minuses of Community Gardens, Part I
If community gardens are so popular across the United States. why wouldn't your community want
one?
The short answer is, yes, you probably would. Benefits do seem to outweigh negatives. But in what
appears to be an unblinking examination of the popular national trend, three researchers from the
Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future unearthed – pardon the pun – a few cautions for those of
us gung–ho about digging in the dirt.
The cautions come in the form of things to consider – items we might not be aware of in our haste
and enthusiasm to start a community garden or become involved in one.
In Part I of our series on the pluses and minuses of community gardens, we'll tackle the good stuff

A Gardening Assistance Program
A Gardening Assistance Program
About 16.7 million children lived in households classified as food insecure in 2011 (Federal
Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics 2013). Food insecurity is limited or uncertain
availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire
acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (Coleman–Jensen, A. & Nord, M., 2013). There is a
way for the United States to help these families in need besides just giving them financial assistance;
they could create a program focused on educating families on a healthier lifestyle and helping them
start a self–sufficiency garden or implementing a community garden program.
There is a direct relationship between poverty, obesity, and the low cost of high energy dense foods
vs. high cost of nutrient rich foods. Even though there are government funded food programs such
as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP formally known as the food stamp
program), Women, Infant and Children (WIC), Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP),
Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and more, none of them are geared towards the right
objective; getting Americans to realize they can become self–sufficient and healthy all on their own.
Programs like these give financial support and offer education to people who qualify, but they do not
put enough emphasis on or do enough to make these educational aspects a necessity. These
government programs have also been recently

Using A Conventional Biological Filter Essay
Instead of using a conventional biological filter in your backyard or garden pond, consider making
your own natural pond filter out of aquatic plants. A natural pond filter is far less expensive to
maintain because it does not require any electricity to keep it running, unlike other types of pond
filters. This also makes a natural pond filter safer for any fish or plants in your pond because there is
less chance for electrical accidents or malfunctions. Natural pond filters add to the natural
ecosystem of your garden pond, with the plant life serving as food for any fish you have inside the
pond. Natural garden pond filters: Better algae control A natural pond filter can also be more
effective than a traditional filter because it can remove more types of algae and weed material. Most
biological garden pond filters only catch the blooms of algae that float through the water, but cannot
always eliminate blanket weed material that is stuck to the pond 's sides or bottom. A natural bog–
type pond filter controls algae in the entire pond by competing with the unwanted plants for nitrates
in the water. Natural garden pond filters: Disadvantages There are some disadvantages to using a
natural pond filter as well. Depending on the type of plants used and the fish in your pond, the
natural ecosystem may need more maintenance than a traditional biological filter would. The plants
in your pond filter must be trimmed and kept under control and any dead foliage should be removed

those tomatoes stand some juicy orange habanero chilies and diverse all year round fruits and

enjoyable hobby. Growing a garden reduces the amount of money for groceries, families spend at
the store. Therefore, families who garden at home do not need to spend money on gas, and instead,
pick the food out from their own garden. Because families will have money left over, they can use it
on other expenses. Other types of food may be harder to keep fresh but the natural garden foods will
be savory on their own. In this case, families who get what they need from the garden will enjoy the
food as well. Moreover, growing a garden is straightforward so, families can cooperate and involve
the whole family in the simple recreational activity. Not only will there be time for bonding, but also
be a great way to stay active and includes great health benefits. Endurance, flexibility, and strength
are the three different types of exercises associated with gardening. Gardening benefits the whole
family and it is something that will be enjoyable to do. Gardening benefits people's psychological
health; it increases the overall mental health by allowing people to figure out how to deal with

Mental disorders are some of the least talked about illnesses in the world. For this project I wanted
to create a museum exhibit that not only educated about the history of mental disorders, but also
show what it feels like to live with a disorder and how they can help. I used light blues and pale red
oranges to keep a calm feeling through out the exhibit. I chose to used curved intersecting lines to
show how it can feel for some people who have mental disorders. The illustrations in the in the art

Benefits Of Ferme De La Vache
In a charming green setting, just a few minutes from the centre of Liège, Ferme de la Vache is
developing a social project that combines a biological type of gardening linked to a community
center and the enhancement of the classified site. They try to encourage the discovery of nature,
respecting the environment and show the proper use of composting all linked to the aid of meetings
between the residents of the area of rue de Pierreuse. On the site of Ferme de la Vache there is also a
psychiatric center where the patients can walk free in the gardens of the farm. Being in nature is has
long been associated with being mindful and meditative, but only recently has the scientific
community researched the mental health benefits of outdoor immersion. My aim is to focus on the
health benefits provided by urban farming, community gardens and being in a green environment
overall. But the main goal is to focus more specifically on community gardens and food growing
because that is what's happening in Ferme de la Vache.
The methods used in this paper were mainly literature searches, pictures and mappings to indicate
how the to sites are linked to each other.

The Role Of Community Gardens Function With Health, Food,...
The Role of Community Gardens How Do Community Gardens Function with Health, Food, and
Communities Mariana Gozalo Virginia Commonwealth University Abstract Community gardens
have been becoming more popular throughout the years because they provide fresh produce to the
population of close neighborhoods. They are able to give the less fortunate access to healthy foods,
and able to donate produce to food pantries. There have been studies that research how communities'
gardens have impacted local neighborhoods and communities. Because of the previous studies, a
random sample of neighborhoods, and communities will be taken from selected random community
gardens in Richmond, Virginia to assess their garden and see which aspect of it really influenced the
benefits the most. They will be given a questionnaire, and to compare their health and crime rate
before and after a community garden existed in their area. It is expected that communities that have
more active participants have better health, and in areas where there is community gardens, there is
much more less crime. Keywords: Community Garden, Health, Food, Neighborhood, Crime
Community gardens are pieces of land that are gardened by groups of people to provide fresh
produce and plants. They are usually developed in communities that have unused land, and for
people to grow their own fruits and vegetables. Community gardens benefit the public of lower

EA 1: Community Gardens Imagine the County or State starting a community garden where you
live! If the County or State funded a community garden around where you live it would be great
because there is a lot of positive things the garden will cause. The County or State should fund land

people a place to develop a hobby, and it promotes community spirit. Community gardens bring
enjoyment into atmosphere. "Recreational events at farmers market strengthen community bonds."

The report states that there is a correlation between increased daily temperatures and increased
deaths, illnesses and hospitalizations and that living in urban areas increases vulnerability to heat
exposure. These higher temperatures in urban areas are attributed to a lack of vegetation, waste heat

Language Analysis Essay
The piece titled 'getting our future back on the rails – slowly' is written by a member of The Grow
Slow organisation who believes that the most convenient occupant for the land of the abandoned
railway yards is a community garden. The author begins the article in a confined toned aiming to
convince the reader that a community garden is the right choice and later transfers on to a more
critical tone when talking about convenient foods. The author's main arguments include firstly that
community gardens are a global trend and that their community should be one to follow such a
trend, secondly a community garden will be beneficial to everyone and is the most efficient option
and lastly community gardening will bring the whole community ... Show more content on

The author further convinces the reader of the negative economic impact that convenience foods
have by providing a chart from the NSW environment protection authority which provides that each
year in just one state the cost of processed food waste is approximately $360 million is wasted on
packaged food, $240 million on frozen food and $170 million on takeaway. In contrast of this the
author communicates that if people grew their own food they would value it too much and hence
there would be no waste.
Lastly the author recommends community gardening as the best option because it will bring the
community together. The author claims that the garden will be 'a great way for children to learn,'
also that 'kids spend far too much time inside' and the garden will provide a healthy option for them
to go outside and do some physical work in the fresh air. Referring to children as one of the main
benefiters from the garden the author not only appeals to the council, because children are the future
of their community but also appeals to parents as they want their community to be a healthy and
sufficient place for their children. The author declares to the council

Urban agriculture
An urban farm in Chicago
Urban agriculture, urban farming or urban gardening is the practice of cultivating, processing, and
distributing food in or around a village, town, or city.[1] Urban agriculture can also involve animal
husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, urban beekeeping, and horticulture. These activities occur in
peri–urban areas as well, and peri–urban agriculture may have different characteristics.[2]
Urban agriculture can reflect varying levels of economic and social development. In the global
north, it often takes the form of a social movement for sustainable communities, where organic
growers, 'foodies,' and 'locavores' form social networks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A very similar practice came into use during the Great Depression that provided a purpose, a job,
and food to those who would otherwise be without anything during such harsh times. In this case,
these efforts helped to raise spirits socially as well as to boost economic growth. Over 2.8 million
dollars worth of food was produced from the subsistence gardens during the Depression. By the time
of the Second World War, the War/Food Administration set up a National Victory Garden Program
that set out to systematically establish functioning agriculture within cities. With this new plan in
action, as many as 5.5 million Americans took part in the victory garden movement and over 9
million pounds of fruit and vegetables were grown a year, accounting for 44% of U.S.–grown
produce throughout that time.[citation needed]
In 2010, New York City saw the building and opening of the world's largest privately owned and
operated rooftop farm, followed by an even larger location in 2012.[6] Both were a result of
municipal programs such as The Green Roof Tax Abatement Program.[7] and Green Infrastructure
Grant Program[8]
With its past success in mind and with modern technology, urban agriculture today can be something
to help both developed and developing nations.

Persuasive Letter On Social Justice
Dear Ms. Haynes, As you may know, the fight towards social justice has been going on long
enough. Through recent events such as taking a knee during the national anthem or the white–
supremacist rallies; tension has grown to new heights. Although it may be difficult to fight the issue
of social justice within our divided nation, I believe there is a solution that could help build a
foundation towards equality. An issue that isn't often highlighted is how troubled youth will find
themselves in trouble with the law at a young age and end up being reincarcerated within a vicious
cycle of bad behavior with no positive influences. Another issue that I would like to discuss is food
insecurity within the United States. Primarily in big cities, food insecurity is a problem that must be
addressed in order to provide a healthy future for our community as a whole. A solution I've come
up with is able to tackle both of these issues head–on and hopefully provide a healthier and safer
community for us Colorado residence. It has come to me that the youth that finds themselves lost
within our court systems have not necessarily had the proper influences to allow them to be
productive members of our society. This is why I propose that these teens should be given a second
chance by offering them the chance to help out their community and provide work for the
community gardens in the struggling places of the Denver–Metro area. Given your title as the head

Community Gardens As Alternative For Industrial Agriculture

  • 1. Community Gardens As Alternative For Industrial Agriculture Community Gardens as Possible Alternative to Industrial Agriculture Using Case Studies in Queensland, Australia Brief History and Context: Community gardening is "a solution emerging from grassroots environmental and food movements" (Nettle 2010) While community gardens are often discussed as a progressive, new practice in sustainability, community gardens have actually been cultivated "since at least the nineteenth century," when community gardens were grown by many working–class neighbourhoods during large industrial periods (Lawson 2004). Furthermore, during both World War I and World War II, community gardens grew produce for middle–class families in times of war scarcity in Great Britain, the United States and Australia (Guitart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Community gardens offer a possible alleviation of global pressures in agriculture, as community gardens are small–scale, local agricultural modes of production Urbanisation trends have led to factors such as "declining access to yard space and rising levels of physical inactivity," (King 2008). These factors, combined with rapidly rising knowledge and worries about the current dominant food production regime, have led to the re–emergence of community garden projects across Australia and the world. Motivations for Community Gardens: Previous studies on community gardens have reviewed the various motivations and community benefits (Byrne 2012) and provide valuable insight into the current movement. The vast majority of community gardens studies cite "capacity building" as the main motivator of community gardens, as well as crime reduction, mental health benefits, community building and physical health promotion (Holland 2004, Wakefield et al 2007). Apart from environmental benefits, community gardens have also been shown to ameliorate education related to plants, growing processes and production, as well as contact with nature, which is likely to be otherwise severely limited in urban areas, and may also ease racial tensions (Shinew et al 2004). Guitart's 2013 study on community garden practices in Brisbane and Gold Coast cities reveals that the three most common ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Being A Community College Garden Seeds For Change Looking around Columbia State Community College with the stunning zinnia gardens throughout the grounds, with ample land space and seeing recycling bins placed around the campus, and non smoking signs on the doors, CSCC is on the right path toward being a green campus; we can do more with a starting a community college garden. Imagine a community garden at CSCC where the students, faculty and the community show off with pride, not only because of its beauty, but because it enables a new set of learning experiences for students and our neighbors. CSCC should be willing to fight for a healthier campus. With CSCC deciding to make a conscious effort to encourage, a healthier way of eating by having a community college garden that will encourage students to make the right food choice. CSCC community college garden will inspire students and the community to become involved; in turn, this will cause a ripple effect, and people will start taking care of their own properties. Community gardens have been around for years, and they benefit the people who work in them as much as the people they feed. Not only will the community garden draw people together, they also grow more than food – the involvement in social community usually leads to long term relationships. The Agriculture Department at Columbia State Community College offers a diverse selection of majors, including landscaping, soil science, agricultural business, agricultural engineering, and ... • 5. The Benefits Of Community Gardening Another aspect of community gardening, is regarding those who participate in it. Community gardens can be seen in many cities, with the community coming together to grow produce and relationships along the way. However, it is becoming a growing trend to start this idea at a younger scale. Many schools across North America have started implementing a garden into their after– school or extracurricular programs. By introducing gardening to children at a young age allows for them to take in many of the benefits that come from gardening, and encouraging new ways of engagement. Gardening provides many hands–on activities for children, including designing, planting, and harvesting the food (Yost, 2009). Many studies have shown that children who take care of a garden, or live near one, are more likely to show an interest in gardening as they grow up and develop a strong relationship with gardens and trees (Lohr, 2005). In California, school gardens have become very popular and are continuously promoting them through the State's Education Department. An example of one of the schools in the state is Le Conte Elementary School, which not only has flowers and vegetables, but also livestock, like goats and chickens. The science curriculum at the school is very inclusive with gardening activities, such as propagation, transplanting, and composting (Ferris, 2001). There have been many studies on the effects of school gardens on children. They have shown that students who participated in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Community Garden Review : Project Community Garden Review Process I did not think that this project would amount to much, it was a struggle, and took more effort than everyone expected. We knew that it would be difficult to get the basics planned, to get donations, and to finalize details but I did not think it would be that difficult every step of the way. Going to class most of the semester made me anxious because I knew that it would end in heated arguments and people leaving upset and not much progress. I do not handle conflict well; it stresses me out and when everyone begins fighting it leads to me feeling helpless. After this class and this project, I have learned to handle this stress better and that even though I am a quiet person I can still have a say in how things are handled. Although the closer to the event we got the easier it was to plan, it was still chaotic. I think that towards the end of the semester we wanted to do whatever was the simplest and this actually helped the project. In our brainstorming we covered all different kinds of events to have–from large and extravagant to backyard barbeque–esque, and the smaller setting seemed to feel more in–line with what we wanted to achieve. If we had stopped talking and processing when we thought we had everything figured out, we probably would have spent a lot more money for not much more experience and it would not have been as successful as the event was. Most of the details for the event were not decided until right before the work days or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Benefits Of Promoting Growing Your Own Food And Its... Currently, in the Denver Metro area, there are more than 40 school–based community gardens. These are projects on a much smaller scale than what I'm proposing. The benefits of teaching youth the importance of growing your own food and its nutritional value would have a positive effect for decades to come. The Colorado School of Public Health has data on Denver Urban Garden efforts and how it has led to a tangible, positive change in the community's health and food security. School–based community gardens help to create a bridge between the school and the surrounding community by offering space for gardening to students, parents, teachers and neighbors. Teachers could even have an outdoor classroom where students are given the opportunity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This program could be partnered with the Denver Public Schools, Denver Urban Gardens, Learning Landscapes, and Slow Food Denver. Let's start with the guidelines. School and educational based gardens provide spaces for experimental hands on education. This also allows for incorporating the full cycle of learning associated with healthy food; from growing, to nutrition, and then to cooking. The school gardening program would be designed to involve teachers and certain primary curriculums in subjects such as economics, social studies, and science. This in turn would create respect for diversity and also promote self–growth. The primary purpose would always be education. Having the school and the garden be a cohesive program that would be included in the day–to–day culture of school would promote sustainability with the administration, neighborhood volunteers, and parents who are all essential to the function of this plan. Stewardship opportunities for the students could be provided through the outdoor classroom by utilizing the grounds of the school site. Outdoor classrooms are engaging spaces for children; it helps them develop both a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Planting Vegetables And Fruits Come From We live in the 21st century where young children have no idea where vegetables and fruits come from. All they care about are the screens in front of them. Technology is very useful in our generation, but many people would not know how to survive in a forest alone. On September 10th, around thirty students volunteered at the Heritage Garden located on campus for a good grade. We were already complaining from the start about how we'd have to break a sweat while ignoring our leader and her speech about our growing garden. The only people who weren 't complaining were the elders, those who care about nature, and young children who were excited to plant. It gives us young adults a bad reputation, allowing others to assume our laziness and selfishness. The Heritage Garden can teach millennials today how planting vegetables can help the local food bank, result in great benefits for our environment, and is an excellent outdoor classroom. Produce that are planted in the garden are then donated to local food banks. My first task was to plant some vegetables. In my opinion, that was the most difficult part. The caramel colored soil that was originally there was rock solid. I stabbed my shovel into the dirt, and nothing happened. It looked completely the same. Just like how the dirt in the drought would look like if it were one solid piece. Little by little, I could see the dirt coming apart and falling into the center of the cone–shaped hole. I barely made any progress before Steven ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Community Gardening: Annotated Bibliography The research found the average beds size and rate of community garden plot in NL are as; 10'x10' raised bed, 4'x10' raised bed, 8'x8' raised bed, 4'x8' raised bed, 4'x4'' table–height bed, 3'x3' child's raised bed. It is very difficult to fix the rate charged for a community garden plot in NL as factors such as location, demand, and local economic conditions come into play. Community gardens rely extensively on funding and volunteers. The rate charged for a community garden plot in NL ranges from $10 to $60 depending on plot size. • 15. Benefits Of Urban Community Gardening Benefits of Urban Community Gardening Melinda L. Smith Charter Oak State College Research question What are the significant benefits offered through urban community gardening, which would cause one to participate in the practice? Thesis statement There are many advantages to participation in community gardening because gardening reduces air pollution and heat islands, helps in crime prevention, and most significant of all can affect one's health. Literature Review Kathleen Wolf and Alicia Robbins presented different benefits in the article "Metro Nature, Environmental Health and Economic Value" in an effort to present the economic values associated with exposure to nature outline many of the positive advantages associated with ones exposure to different elements of nature, such as urban greenspaces. Important health benefits relate to reduced air pollution and increases to an active lifestyle. The additional physical activity helps to reduce obesity, lower blood pressure, and produce extended life spans. In the survey "Allotment Gardening and Health: A Comparative Survey" other positive benefits associated with gardening are identified. While the article is written to compare the different effects of allotment gardening compared to those people without allotments, generally the overall advantages associated with gardening are recognized regardless of whether a gardener is working with a small group of family members or a larger group of community gardeners. ... • 17. Black Culture And Its Effects On Society Urban areas are known for their large amounts of minority populations while rural areas are usually associated with people of Caucasian descent. The word 'urban' has become synonymous with the phrase, inner city. Historically, these terms strengthen the idea of "white flight" which is defined as "the departure of whites from places (such as urban neighborhoods or schools) increasingly or predominantly populated by minorities" (Merriam–Webster). Both of these words are often used as adjectives to describe people who are lazy and insolent. This feeds directly into harmful stereotypes about minority populations such as black men being unintelligent and lazy human beings who depend on welfare. These stereotypes do not discuss the fact that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Politicians need to be more open to allowing vacant lots to be turned into gardens that can be used by the community. As seen by the film Maquilapolis, there are multiple environmental issues that disproportionately impact oppressed groups. These issues can often be tied to most of the world's relationship with capitalism. In Maquilapolis, the women are in such a low socioeconomic status that they can't afford to find another job or move out of their neighborhood. Similarly, food deserts (parts of the country lacking fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy foods) are prominent in minority areas because they don't have the transportation or money for nutritious foods. Recently, it's been discovered that income isn't the only factor impacting food availability, "Hispanic and Black neighborhood were still more likely to have smaller corner stores and less likely to have large supermarkets, compared to their white counterparts. These smaller stores are less likely to have fresh fruits and vegetable, whole grains, and yogurt, which are commonplace in larger supermarket." (http://jointcenter.org/blog/food–deserts–more–common–minority–communities) Although urban community gardens can't provide whole grains and yogurt, they can produce fresh fruits and vegetables. • 23. The Food Areas Of The United States Essay As the population increases and urbanization continues to develop and become more popular, an important, life–sustaining product is left behind. Most relevant in western civilization, the scarcity of locally grown and produced food is a problem that exists, whether people realize it or not. Per the Food Access Research Atlas, provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, there are 8,959 food deserts in the united states as of 2010 ¹. An Urban Food desert is any location deprived of supermarkets and other access to fresh fruits and vegetables, which usually plagues places of lower socioeconomic status. The low demand for food is attributed to lack of affordability and education, and perceptibly retailers ought not bring their business to places with very little demand for the product. If these deserts are ever to be omitted from the world, it is not enough to hope for the eventual emergence of supermarkets or farms, communities must work together to improve their range of reachable sustenance. It is every person's duty, as a member of humanity, to aid in fixing the problem and ultimately improving the world, which gives way to defining the common good approach to ethical reasoning. Using the common good approach, a simple, yet collectively beneficial solution is the emergence of local gardens/greenhouses, which would largely combat the detrimental dining options of an urban food desert. Because this project is based on qualitative research methods, this section will utilize first person narrative form. According to Marcia et al (2011), "Ultimately the goal of using composite first person narrative is to express the insights gleaned through qualitative research in a way that is accessible to others; in a way that will add to the knowledge of a certain phenomenon" (para. 50). The symbolic and motivational impact that these fruit trees have in generating community awareness and participation multiply the impact the fruit itself has on building equity in the human community. This garden is a visual reminder of community connectedness and the importance placed by volunteers and community members on our commitment as a society to be more inclusive and provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As discussed by both Hinchcliffe et al.(2005) and Latour (2005), there is a need for representation of both living and nonliving actors. These actors exercise agency through both immediate action and long term consequences of their influence over other actors in the ecosystem. It is arguable that the "endangered" status held by the water voles in Hinchcliffe et al.(2005) and other endangered species are treated comparably to people who carry the "vulnerable adult" status. This status rallies support from other people to exercise agency in the form of physical and legal protection on their behalf. The vast majority of species in any given ecosystem remain unrepresented and often completely unrecognized leaving them vulnerable to human activities that have the potential of disrupting or completely destroying the balance of their ecosystem. As Latour (2005) argues, when considering our relationships with these non–human actors interactions should be examined critically with respect to each unique set of relationships and interactions rather than making broad and disconnected determinations based solely on human desires to shape and control the outcome of these interactions. My Personal Experience : My Experience In South Africa It's not a topic that my parents like to discuss with me very often, but I think it's important for them to tell me about their experiences in South Africa. Of course here in the putrid city of Cleveland, it's not the same, but it's better than what I know about South Africa. Now that I'm on that topic, I might as well just tell you about it. My parents told me that in South Africa, you were never sure if there would ever be a "tomorrow." There was always the constant threat of being hurt for your food or belongings. So that's why they brought me to Cleveland before birth. I grew up in Cleveland, going to all the local schools. It was hard for me and my family to communicate with others because we had to adapt from our original language Afrikaans to English. I eventually learned most of what I needed to speak fluently around the age of 8. At 25, after graduating from Ohio State University, I applied my gardening and baking skills to open up a local garden shop where I can help people and teach them how to plant different things properly. Kim walked into my shop, I asked her what she was looking to plant. "Pumpkins," she said. "I want to grow my own pumpkins for my family to carve." I took her into my back room and gave her a quick tutorial on how to maintain her pumpkins correctly. "Kim, you understand that you must take care of these pumpkins the right way or else your pumpkins won't grow! You and Royce both want to grow pumpkins, so why don't you guys team up?" Royce ... • 31. An Eco Friendly Practice For Your Lawn And Garden It seems so ridiculous that gardening would be an area where we need to be environmentally conscious. After all, if you are growing green things, it should be an eco–friendly practice by default, shouldn 't it? Unfortunately, mostly for the sake of modern convenience, there are now so many chemicals tied up in gardening – either to make your veggies pest–free and fruitful or to make certain your flowers are weed free and extra large – that we almost negate the positive ecological impact of growing plants. Fortunately, there are ways to have it all – well fertilized, bug–less plants, and a clear, green conscience. All you need to do is use all natural, environmentally sound products for your lawn and garden. The first product you want to check out is a little thing called diatomaceous earth. Frankly, it has so many benefits, it is almost like cheating. It is both a pest control agent and a growth medium, and it retains water and nutrients, while assisting with drainage. The primary drawbacks are the potential for harm to helpful insects and the dangers of inhalation, depending on which type you buy (though these are no different than the risks with chemical insecticides). If you visit your local nursery or big box home improvement store, they should be able to help you find some easily. It may sound like a joke, but if you are looking for natural, eco– friendly fertilizer with little or no odor, TerraCycle 's Worm Poop does an excellent job and you can feel good about it for ... • 33. How To Make A Water Garden Essay You can have a beautiful and calming water garden no matter how much or how little space you have. All you need is a weekend and a little planning to have all the beauty, tranquility and calming atmosphere you desire at an affordable price. Your first decision will be to find a spot for your garden. Most people choose spots where there is a good amount of shade in the afternoon and early evening. You will need at least five hours of good sunlight a day for your water plants since most water plants need direct sunlight to survive and be healthy. It 's not recommended that you place your water garden directly under a shade tree with over–hanging branches that will drop leaves into your pond, unless you like cleaning leaves out of it everyday. It may help to remember while choosing a spot for your pond that water is heavy, about 8 pounds per gallon, the addition of plants and fish will make things pretty heavy so be sure the area you choose will hold everything plus the pump. Some people like a variety of plants, fish or accessories in their ponds, while others only want two or three things, this all depends on you and what pleases your senses. Don 't forget to place your garden close to an easily accessible water source since you will need to replace water levels and keep things fresh and stable everyday. Next, you will need to decide what type of enclosure you 're going to build. Do not use chemically treated wood since it contains arsenic and is not eco friendly. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Urban Community Gardens Urban areas are known for their large underprivileged minority populations. The word 'urban' has become synonymous with the phrase "inner city". These reality of terms have been further strengthened by "white flight" which is defined as "the departure of whites from places (such as urban neighborhoods or schools) increasingly or predominantly populated by minorities" (Merriam– Webster). Urban and inner city are often used to describe people who are lazy and insolent. This feeds directly into harmful stereotypes about minority populations, such as Black men being unintelligent and lazy human beings who leave their families dependent on welfare. However, the use of the word "urban" has also invaded popular culture, causing it to be synonymous with the struggle of Black culture. For example, "urban music" means genres that are primarily created or popularized by Black people and generates billions of entertainment dollars. Urban has become a vital thread in society and identified by many as overcoming obstacles to achieve wealth and status. The "urban" community garden has that same potential. • 39. Environmental, Cultural And Social Benefits Of Community... 1. What are the environmental, cultural and social benefits of community gardens in New York? The environment will benefit from community gardens because it provides green spaces in communities that are surrounded by concrete and high rises. Urban gardening is critical to sustaining the environment for the future. Many of the residents are from low income families and do not have the social–economical means to access fresh food and open recreational space and services. Families find it hard to pay bills and afford better foods for their family and food stamps are not enough. A food pantry was established in the city that fed hungry residents who need assistance. 3000 to 20000 pounds of food are given away to about 200 families weekly. Produce such as cucumbers, apples, cherries, pears, peaches, plums, peppers from Caribbean and flowers are grown. New York City is below the recommended ratio of open green space in ratio of two and a half acres per 1000 and residence and the problem is worse in low income areas that do not have the opportunities or space to create them. It is recommended that urban areas have at Urban gardening because the it is the only means in which families who live there have access to fresh grown food. Community Gardens And Green Spaces Rationale Purpose The purpose of this speech is to provide information and encourage city residents to invest in gardens in their neighborhoods by showing that community gardens increase property value as well as improve the emotional and physical well–being of their citizens who participate in the project. Additionally, community fruit and vegetable gardens can help provide fresh produce for residents on fixed incomes for little to no cost outside of volunteer time. Audience My ideal audience will consist of community leaders, urban planners, neighborhood improvement groups, gardening clubs and the ordinary citizens of the city who are interested in improving their lives, health and neighborhoods. Significance This topic is very significant because over the past several decades, urban and neighborhood planners have strayed away from green spaces throughout their projects. Green spaces encourage interaction among citizens as well as improving the environment in the vicinity. In this divisive political climate, it is almost necessary to provide areas where families and individuals can come together and enjoy a less stressful environment. I. Introduction a. Summary Of ' The Power Of Home Gardens ' Austin Matzelle Ms. Martha Silano English 201 OAS September 27 2016 The Power of Home Gardens in America TEDxDirigo hosted Roger Doiron to provide listeners with his message: A subversive plot: how to grow a revolution in your own backyard. Throughout his talk, Doiron passionately explains to listeners how growing a backyard garden can help someone retake control over an aspect of their life. Their food supply. "Food is a form of energy, it's what our bodies run on. But it is also a form of power." (Roger Doiron) Doiron believes that when people venture into building their own gardens, they gain control over their own diets, health, and pocketbooks. He alludes to how citizens taking this power subversively undermine the power of corporations usually in charge of the general populations health and food needs. "We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic ... and in a parallel world we see that hunger is on the rise." (Doiron) The next angle Doiron takes is attacking the major problems our planet is facing. The obesity rates in many countries has been steadily rising, yet hundreds of millions are malnourished. Our planet's resources are also dwindling, the amount of land we can grow on, our water supply, and even the genetic diversity of the plants we consume are all under attack due to the inflation of human populations. • 53. A Gardening Assistance Program A Gardening Assistance Program About 16.7 million children lived in households classified as food insecure in 2011 (Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics 2013). Food insecurity is limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (Coleman–Jensen, A. & Nord, M., 2013). There is a way for the United States to help these families in need besides just giving them financial assistance; they could create a program focused on educating families on a healthier lifestyle and helping them start a self–sufficiency garden or implementing a community garden program. There is a direct relationship between poverty, obesity, and the low cost of high energy dense foods vs. high cost of nutrient rich foods. Even though there are government funded food programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP formally known as the food stamp program), Women, Infant and Children (WIC), Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and more, none of them are geared towards the right objective; getting Americans to realize they can become self–sufficient and healthy all on their own. Programs like these give financial support and offer education to people who qualify, but they do not put enough emphasis on or do enough to make these educational aspects a necessity. • 55. Using A Conventional Biological Filter Essay Instead of using a conventional biological filter in your backyard or garden pond, consider making your own natural pond filter out of aquatic plants. A natural pond filter is far less expensive to maintain because it does not require any electricity to keep it running, unlike other types of pond filters. This also makes a natural pond filter safer for any fish or plants in your pond because there is less chance for electrical accidents or malfunctions. Natural pond filters add to the natural ecosystem of your garden pond, with the plant life serving as food for any fish you have inside the pond. Natural garden pond filters: Better algae control A natural pond filter can also be more effective than a traditional filter because it can remove more types of algae and weed material. Most biological garden pond filters only catch the blooms of algae that float through the water, but cannot always eliminate blanket weed material that is stuck to the pond 's sides or bottom. A natural bog– type pond filter controls algae in the entire pond by competing with the unwanted plants for nitrates in the water. Natural garden pond filters: Disadvantages There are some disadvantages to using a natural pond filter as well. Depending on the type of plants used and the fish in your pond, the natural ecosystem may need more maintenance than a traditional biological filter would. The plants in your pond filter must be trimmed and kept under control and any dead foliage should be removed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Role of Community Gardens How Do Community Gardens Function with Health, Food, and Communities Mariana Gozalo Virginia Commonwealth University Abstract Community gardens have been becoming more popular throughout the years because they provide fresh produce to the population of close neighborhoods. They are able to give the less fortunate access to healthy foods, and able to donate produce to food pantries. There have been studies that research how communities' gardens have impacted local neighborhoods and communities. Because of the previous studies, a random sample of neighborhoods, and communities will be taken from selected random community gardens in Richmond, Virginia to assess their garden and see which aspect of it really influenced the benefits the most. They will be given a questionnaire, and to compare their health and crime rate before and after a community garden existed in their area. It is expected that communities that have more active participants have better health, and in areas where there is community gardens, there is much more less crime. In contrast of this the author communicates that if people grew their own food they would value it too much and hence there would be no waste. Lastly the author recommends community gardening as the best option because it will bring the community together. The author claims that the garden will be 'a great way for children to learn,' also that 'kids spend far too much time inside' and the garden will provide a healthy option for them to go outside and do some physical work in the fresh air. Referring to children as one of the main benefiters from the garden the author not only appeals to the council, because children are the future of their community but also appeals to parents as they want their community to be a healthy and sufficient place for their children. Urban Farming Open main menu Search Wikipedia Edit Watch this page Urban agriculture An urban farm in Chicago Urban agriculture, urban farming or urban gardening is the practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing food in or around a village, town, or city.[1] Urban agriculture can also involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, urban beekeeping, and horticulture. These activities occur in peri–urban areas as well, and peri–urban agriculture may have different characteristics.[2] Urban agriculture can reflect varying levels of economic and social development. In the global north, it often takes the form of a social movement for sustainable communities, where organic growers, 'foodies,' and 'locavores' form social networks ... A very similar practice came into use during the Great Depression that provided a purpose, a job, and food to those who would otherwise be without anything during such harsh times. In this case, these efforts helped to raise spirits socially as well as to boost economic growth. Over 2.8 million dollars worth of food was produced from the subsistence gardens during the Depression. By the time of the Second World War, the War/Food Administration set up a National Victory Garden Program that set out to systematically establish functioning agriculture within cities. With this new plan in action, as many as 5.5 million Americans took part in the victory garden movement and over 9 million pounds of fruit and vegetables were grown a year, accounting for 44% of U.S.–grown produce throughout that time.[citation needed] In 2010, New York City saw the building and opening of the world's largest privately owned and operated rooftop farm, followed by an even larger location in 2012.[6] Both were a result of municipal programs such as The Green Roof Tax Abatement Program.[7] and Green Infrastructure Grant Program[8] With its past success in mind and with modern technology, urban agriculture today can be something to help both developed and developing nations. • 76. Persuasive Letter On Social Justice Dear Ms. Haynes, As you may know, the fight towards social justice has been going on long enough. Through recent events such as taking a knee during the national anthem or the white– supremacist rallies; tension has grown to new heights. Although it may be difficult to fight the issue of social justice within our divided nation, I believe there is a solution that could help build a foundation towards equality. An issue that isn't often highlighted is how troubled youth will find themselves in trouble with the law at a young age and end up being reincarcerated within a vicious cycle of bad behavior with no positive influences. Another issue that I would like to discuss is food insecurity within the United States. Primarily in big cities, food insecurity is a problem that must be addressed in order to provide a healthy future for our community as a whole. A solution I've come up with is able to tackle both of these issues head–on and hopefully provide a healthier and safer community for us Colorado residence. It has come to me that the youth that finds themselves lost within our court systems have not necessarily had the proper influences to allow them to be productive members of our society. This is why I propose that these teens should be given a second chance by offering them the chance to help out their community and provide work for the community gardens in the struggling places of the Denver–Metro area.
