Couple Finds Their {FULL} Life at Touchmark Retirement Community
1. Sheila and Vern Berkompas moved into a cottage last fall,
but it’s hard to find them at home. Vern plays bridge and
exercises daily in Touchmark’s Health & Fitness Center—
when he isn’t walking the neighborhood or taking history
classes offered by Spokane Community College. Sheila takes
exercise classes, knits, and does cross-stitch. Of course, they
also spend time visiting with their grandkids.
“After living in Southern California for over 70 years, we
moved to Spokane to be close to our son and grandchildren,”
says Sheila. The couple had been looking for a retirement
community in the LA area but couldn’t find the quality they
wanted at an affordable price. Then the call came.
“Our son is a retired USAF colonel, and during his time in
the military, he and his family were stationed in Spokane,”
Vern explains. “They liked it so much, when the time came
to retire, they moved back.” After settling in, their son drove
by Touchmark. “He called and said, ‘Dad, you have

the amazing team at Touchmark. They work hard

are.”
The couple say they chose Touchmark for two reasons:
It offered the best value for the money and is close to the
kids. “We had been looking in Southern California for over
four years and hadn’t found anything close to the quality
and affordability offered by Touchmark,” says Sheila. “We
had quite a few options—our choices included a variety of
retirement options, including apartments, cottages, and
CCRCs. Since we recently downsized, we chose a cottage—it is
beautifully updated and just right for us.”
Before retiring, Vern was an accountant for Los Angeles
County, and Sheila worked as a church secretary for the
Christian Reformed Church. They aren’t quite used to the
snow. “It’s still a novelty,” says Vern. “Sheila and I haven’t
really had a chance to explore the area yet because of the
weather. I look forward to finding some fishing buddies and
getting to know the lakes and streams around here,” he adds.
Now Vern will just have to find time in the couple’s already
full days to schedule those fishing outings!
