John wick opening-
Lighting- barely any lighting in the opening the darkness of the scene represents the overall dark
tone of the film and the darkness of the main character john. Red lights standing out in the scene,
represent the danger that the character is in. Light from the phone is bright , represents the happy
times that has been recorded, could also represent heaven, where john’s wife is.
Narrative- news report in the background, shows the world is carrying on around the main character,
shows the event isn’t world ending. Beaten up character shows there will be dangerous fights in the
film. Wife recording on phone shows wife has died and john has to cope without her , John lying on
the floor shows he doesn’t have much energy left to keep on fighting, these may be his last days.
Editing- slow paced editing when john has his phone out to tell the story of him and his wife. Slow
editing all the way through relates to the tiredness of john in the scene, he doesn’t have the energy
for fast paced action anymore.
Camera shots- extreme long shot shown while john is on the floor passed out, it shows that there is
nobody around him, this depicts john’s isolation in the film and shows that he is alone in the film.
There is a close up shot of johns face while he is looking at the video on the phone this is to show the
emotion on his face which shows the viewer john’s emotional attachment to the woman in the video
or the video itself. There is also a close up shot when he is on the floor passing out, this shows the
emotion on his face, making the viewer see that john has given up or lost hope , he also looks like he
is dying thanks to the blood and bruises on him, this could foreshadow the ending to the film.
Mise en scene-
The darkness of the main characters outfit reflects his dark personality; it also shows that he is not a
hero in this movie. The industrial area in the background shows the viewers that the movie takes
place.
Special effects- the blood all around john shows he is not above fighting people when he has to, and
shows he is not a peaceful person, it also connotes the darkness of his character by showing the
viewer straight away that he is a violent man.
Jurassic park-
Lighting- There is bright lights on all the characters faces when they open the raptor cage to show
their emotions and expressions about the raptor being released. Lighting is also used to show the
raptor is in the cage but it only shows the outline not the raptor itself, this is to make the raptor look
more intimidating to the workmen and the viewers, the light shining down on the character giving
the orders highlights his authority among the workers.
Mise en scene-
The forest area with the trees and other shrubbery show that they are in a tropical area not usually
inhabited by man showing how isolated the workers there are if any danger occurs. The workers
clothes, the special high vis jackets and safety gear, connotes the danger of their job and how harsh
the consequences could be if something goes wrong, the amount of weapons in this scene also
connote this.
Editing- the editing is done well in this scene, while the raptor is being transported in it is slow
editing, all the camera angles change slowly the scene flows at a slow pace, this is to build up the
tension and danger in the scene so that when the scene suddenly changes to a fast pace when the
action starts it unleashes the tension it has built up and shows the viewers how dangerous the
dinosaurs are. The cameras start to change at a fast pace and the shooting flows fast to complement
the action scene.
Shot types-
There is an extreme close up when the man is about to get eaten by the raptor, this is show the
tension when he slips through the ranger’s hand as the viewers know he won’t survive, it also has a
close up on the man’s face before this, to show his fear when he is being dragged away by the
raptor just before the ranger grabs him. Another extreme close up on the ranger’s mouth when he
is giving the orders to “Shoot her!!” this shows the urgency of his instruction.
The is a low angle shot when all the workmen are looking up at the cage to show all their emotions
when the cage is being lowered, it also shows the readiness and experience of the workmen as they
are all in formation ready to transport the raptor, like they have done it before.
There is also an establishing shot when the cage is first being lowered in to show the viewers the
setting for which the film will take place in. it also shows all the security measures put in place to
guard the raptor.
Special effects- The dinosaur roaring special effect is used to make the audience believe that the
dinosaur is actually inside the cage rather than just edited in.
Guardians of the galaxy-
Lighting- The dark lighting on the character at the start would make people think he is the bad guy
due to the darkness around him however his funny personality and dancing contrasts this, the
lighting on the mask is rather dark also hinting at him being a villain but when he takes off his mask
light is on his face showing a hero beneath the mask, this could represent him taking on a dark
persona to be a hero.
Mise en scene- The darkness of the characters outfit contrasts his role in the him ,his outfit would
be more associated with a villain rather than a hero, for example the red eyes of the helmet. The
Walkman player used which was widely used in the 80s contrasts the futuristic setting. The high tech
looking gadgets the character has shows the futuristic setting to the film. The character dancing
with the rat as a microphone also reflects his careless personality.
Editing- the slow paced change of camera angles when the character is exploring the planet builds
up tension and makes the audience think there is danger afoot but when it changes to fast paced it
makes the audience laugh as the film fooled them making them think there would be action rather
than comedy.
Shot types- there is a close up shot of the character
while he is dancing shows his carefree personality. Also
when he is stood still just as he takes off his helmet a
close up on his face is used to show his emotions.
An establishing shot is used when he first enters the
cavern to allow the viewers to relate to the character
by seeing what he sees. It shows what state the room
is in and gives an idea to whereabouts the character is
going.
Establishment of narrative- The title ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ coming into the scene contrasts the
main character in this scene as he is stealing something , which isn’t what a ‘Guardian’ would do,
hinting at the character having a change of morals through the film. The planets in the first shot
show that the film is set in outer space and is a sci-fi film; this is also supported by the use of high
tech gadgets by the main character. The fact that the character is stealing something also contrasts
the film title. The fact that the character is searching the object by going that far into a cavern to find
an object shows the viewer that the films storyline will be centred around what the character is
stealing, and on the character stealing something else.
Special effects- There is a 3D hologram for the character to see events of the past on the planet to
create the sense of suspicion as to why the planet is now a wasteland and what the main character is
doing there. The eyes of the helmet also glow bright red hinting at him being a villain rather than a
hero. The background music of the 80s brings a lighter tone to the film as it takes away some of the
seriousness of the character exploring a dark cavern.
Dawn of the apes
Lighting- the red lights on the world represent the population of humans, when each of the lights
keep going out it represents the people with the virus dying. It also represents how many people
have been infected with the virus. The darkness of the world connotates the death of it
Mise en scene- There is no mise en scene for this section, it is a compilation of tv reports being
shown on the countries around the world to show the viewer what is happening in each of those
countries and how the world are acting to the virus
Editing- There is slow editing on the world spinning to show the tragedy of the world ending. But on
each of the countries where the action is being shown on the news there is a fast pace of editing to
show the panic of people.
Shot types- there is a tracking shot going around the world to show how far the virus is being spread.
And there is one when the lights are going out across the world to show how many people are dying,
There is a close up of the globe when there is only one light left to show the isolation of the few
people left alive from the virus and to show how little of the whole world are left alive,
Special effects- the red lights going across the world connote the hazard and danger of the simian
flu. The lines travelling across the world shows the worldwide spread of the flu. The news reports
are edited on to the countries of the world to show how each of the countries are reacting and
trying to survive, it also shows the isolation of the countries as they are all fighting the disease on
their own they arent working together. The whole world darkening when the last light goes out
represents the world dying with the last people dying, connoting the apocalypse.
Narrative- The Flu spreading across the world and the news forecasts show that the film will be
about the few survivors that are left after the simian flu. The title ‘Dawn of the planet of the apes’
suggests that they will be contesting with the apes for control of the planets but they apes may
prevail. When the news reports mention that the apes all ran off to the forest suggests that later in
the film the apes will be coming to the city and taking over the planet.
Star Wars
Lighting
The lighting suggests that that the scene would be set in space due to the lighting being extremely dark due to
space normally being black with the only light sources coming from stars and planets. Once they are on the
ship you can see that the films will be set in a futuristic setting as all the walls are incredibly shiny and clean
with white shiny walls
Editing
The scene is edited so that during the beginning of the star wars opening, you can see that the scene will be
set in space due to the background having stars and planets. The scene is also edited so that 2 spaceships can
be seen flying through space. You
Mise en Scene
Once inside the spaceship the scenery also indicates towards the film being a sci-fi as the walls looks
very futuristic. The clothing and props that the characters are holding also indicate that they are
from the future
Shot Types/Distances
There is an establishing shot used when the two ships come into camera. This is used so that you are
able to tell where the opening scene will be. There is also a close-up used on one of the soldier’s
faces so you can see what they are
feeling during this scene. There is also a
low shot used when Darth Vader boards
the ship. This is used to make him look
bigger than what he actually is. This
makes him look powerful and evil as his
Armor/clothes contrast with the
whiteness of the ship
Editing
Editing is used when you can see the two ships chasing each other. This editing is used to show that
the two ships are in flight and that they are chasing each other due to the bigger one slowly catching
up to the smaller ship.

Jurassic park- Lighting- There is bright lights on all the characters faces when they open the raptor cage to show their emotions and expressions about the raptor being released. Lighting is also used to show the raptor is in the cage but it only shows the outline not the raptor itself, this is to make the raptor look more intimidating to the workmen and the viewers, the light shining down on the character giving the orders highlights his authority among the workers. Mise en scene- The forest area with the trees and other shrubbery show that they are in a tropical area not usually inhabited by man showing how isolated the workers there are if any danger occurs. The workers clothes, the special high vis jackets and safety gear, connotes the danger of their job and how harsh the consequences could be if something goes wrong, the amount of weapons in this scene also connote this. Editing- the editing is done well in this scene, while the raptor is being transported in it is slow editing, all the camera angles change slowly the scene flows at a slow pace, this is to build up the tension and danger in the scene so that when the scene suddenly changes to a fast pace when the action starts it unleashes the tension it has built up and shows the viewers how dangerous the dinosaurs are. The cameras start to change at a fast pace and the shooting flows fast to complement the action scene. Shot types- There is an extreme close up when the man is about to get eaten by the raptor, this is show the tension when he slips through the ranger’s hand as the viewers know he won’t survive, it also has a close up on the man’s face before this, to show his fear when he is being dragged away by the raptor just before the ranger grabs him. Another extreme close up on the ranger’s mouth when he is giving the orders to “Shoot her!!” this shows the urgency of his instruction.
  • 3. The is a low angle shot when all the workmen are looking up at the cage to show all their emotions when the cage is being lowered, it also shows the readiness and experience of the workmen as they are all in formation ready to transport the raptor, like they have done it before. There is also an establishing shot when the cage is first being lowered in to show the viewers the setting for which the film will take place in. it also shows all the security measures put in place to guard the raptor. Special effects- The dinosaur roaring special effect is used to make the audience believe that the dinosaur is actually inside the cage rather than just edited in. Guardians of the galaxy- Lighting- The dark lighting on the character at the start would make people think he is the bad guy due to the darkness around him however his funny personality and dancing contrasts this, the lighting on the mask is rather dark also hinting at him being a villain but when he takes off his mask light is on his face showing a hero beneath the mask, this could represent him taking on a dark persona to be a hero.
  • 4. Mise en scene- The darkness of the characters outfit contrasts his role in the him ,his outfit would be more associated with a villain rather than a hero, for example the red eyes of the helmet. The Walkman player used which was widely used in the 80s contrasts the futuristic setting. The high tech looking gadgets the character has shows the futuristic setting to the film. The character dancing with the rat as a microphone also reflects his careless personality. Editing- the slow paced change of camera angles when the character is exploring the planet builds up tension and makes the audience think there is danger afoot but when it changes to fast paced it makes the audience laugh as the film fooled them making them think there would be action rather than comedy. Shot types- there is a close up shot of the character while he is dancing shows his carefree personality. Also when he is stood still just as he takes off his helmet a close up on his face is used to show his emotions. An establishing shot is used when he first enters the cavern to allow the viewers to relate to the character by seeing what he sees. It shows what state the room is in and gives an idea to whereabouts the character is going.
  • 5. Establishment of narrative- The title ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ coming into the scene contrasts the main character in this scene as he is stealing something , which isn’t what a ‘Guardian’ would do, hinting at the character having a change of morals through the film. The planets in the first shot show that the film is set in outer space and is a sci-fi film; this is also supported by the use of high tech gadgets by the main character. The fact that the character is stealing something also contrasts the film title. The fact that the character is searching the object by going that far into a cavern to find an object shows the viewer that the films storyline will be centred around what the character is stealing, and on the character stealing something else. Special effects- There is a 3D hologram for the character to see events of the past on the planet to create the sense of suspicion as to why the planet is now a wasteland and what the main character is doing there. The eyes of the helmet also glow bright red hinting at him being a villain rather than a hero. The background music of the 80s brings a lighter tone to the film as it takes away some of the seriousness of the character exploring a dark cavern. Dawn of the apes Lighting- the red lights on the world represent the population of humans, when each of the lights keep going out it represents the people with the virus dying. It also represents how many people have been infected with the virus. The darkness of the world connotates the death of it Mise en scene- There is no mise en scene for this section, it is a compilation of tv reports being shown on the countries around the world to show the viewer what is happening in each of those countries and how the world are acting to the virus Editing- There is slow editing on the world spinning to show the tragedy of the world ending. But on each of the countries where the action is being shown on the news there is a fast pace of editing to show the panic of people.
  • 6. Shot types- there is a tracking shot going around the world to show how far the virus is being spread. And there is one when the lights are going out across the world to show how many people are dying, There is a close up of the globe when there is only one light left to show the isolation of the few people left alive from the virus and to show how little of the whole world are left alive, Special effects- the red lights going across the world connote the hazard and danger of the simian flu. The lines travelling across the world shows the worldwide spread of the flu. The news reports are edited on to the countries of the world to show how each of the countries are reacting and trying to survive, it also shows the isolation of the countries as they are all fighting the disease on their own they arent working together. The whole world darkening when the last light goes out represents the world dying with the last people dying, connoting the apocalypse. Narrative- The Flu spreading across the world and the news forecasts show that the film will be about the few survivors that are left after the simian flu. The title ‘Dawn of the planet of the apes’ suggests that they will be contesting with the apes for control of the planets but they apes may prevail. When the news reports mention that the apes all ran off to the forest suggests that later in the film the apes will be coming to the city and taking over the planet. Star Wars Lighting The lighting suggests that that the scene would be set in space due to the lighting being extremely dark due to space normally being black with the only light sources coming from stars and planets. Once they are on the ship you can see that the films will be set in a futuristic setting as all the walls are incredibly shiny and clean with white shiny walls Editing The scene is edited so that during the beginning of the star wars opening, you can see that the scene will be set in space due to the background having stars and planets. The scene is also edited so that 2 spaceships can be seen flying through space. You Mise en Scene
  • 7. Once inside the spaceship the scenery also indicates towards the film being a sci-fi as the walls looks very futuristic. The clothing and props that the characters are holding also indicate that they are from the future Shot Types/Distances There is an establishing shot used when the two ships come into camera. This is used so that you are able to tell where the opening scene will be. There is also a close-up used on one of the soldier’s faces so you can see what they are feeling during this scene. There is also a low shot used when Darth Vader boards the ship. This is used to make him look bigger than what he actually is. This makes him look powerful and evil as his Armor/clothes contrast with the whiteness of the ship Editing Editing is used when you can see the two ships chasing each other. This editing is used to show that the two ships are in flight and that they are chasing each other due to the bigger one slowly catching up to the smaller ship.
