2. The definiton of intertexuality is that inside a
certain type of media (e.g. a music video)
there is a reference to another type of media.
E.g. a music video could reference a movie in
it. There are 3 different types of
intertextuality: Homage, Parody and pastiche
3. • A Parody is where someone takes the overall concept of something, and imitates
the original concept in the hopes of making it comedic, this is usually done by
exaggerating the video in certain ways or mocking the original in the parody.
Parodies are usually done as a joke, never to be taken seriously. Some music artists
have notably become famous for doing parodies of songs. One of the most famous
parody artists is ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic who has become a successful artist for just
doing parodies of other songs. One example is the song ‘White and Nerdy’, a
parody of a well known rap song ‘Riding dirty’. Parodies can also be done in other
forms of media, not just music. For example there are many ‘spoof’ movies where in
people take characters and scenarios from various films and mock them all in their
own movie. A few examples being ‘Epic Movie’ ‘Disaster Movie’ and ‘The Hungover
Games’ TV also makes parodies They can be as big as an entire show devoted to
mocking something else, or small references in episodes mocking other shows. For
example in the Tv show ‘Supernatural’ episode ‘Changing Channels’ the show
parodies several other different TV shows such as CSI, Knight Rider and ER and
mocks them as a joke.
4. A pastiche is in many ways like a parody. It is where someone imitates the works of another
person and then recreates them in their own way. Only with a pastiche, rather than mocking the
original work, a pastiche usually aims to pay respect to the work it is based upon. In music videos
a pastiche is usually done so that the artist can pay a tribute to the work that they have based
the song or video around. There are quite a few examples of Pastiche in music, for example
Queen have done a number of Pastiches with their songs. For example: "Crazy Little Thing◦
Called Love" is a pastiche of Elvis Presley. "Innuendo" is a pastiche of Led Zeppelin. "Somebody
to Love" is a pastiche of Aretha Franklin. "Another One Bites The Dust" is a pastiche of Chic. Also
about half of "Weird Al" Yankovic's songs are pastiches. Most of them aren't parodies of the
songs they pastiche, as, though they often satirize various aspects of society or parody other
works, they don't make any point about the original .There are also examples of Pastiche in
other forms of media. Shaun of the Dead is a pastiche of various horror movies, including An
American Werewolf in London, Evil Dead 2 and Night of the Living Dead (1968). The
Supernatural episode ‘Monster Movie’ is shot entirely in black and white and the plotline of that
episode is a pastiche of classical horror movies.
5. A homage is a lot like a pastiche as it used as a way for
someone to pay respect to another via their work. However
unlike a pastiche, a homage is a reference to whoever you wish
to praise in your works rather than basing your whole project
around paying tribute to them. However it is more than just a
quick shout out. • The music video of "Before He Cheats" by
Carrie Underwood. The rampage scenes – where Carrie flies
into a rage upon learning that her boyfriend had cheated on
her – recalls Carrie's rampage in the movie Carrie, in particular
explosions and destruction on a small-town city street as Carrie
walks calmly by. Stevie Wonder's "Master Blaster" is an
homage to "Jammin'" by Bob Marley. Billy Joel's An Innocent
Man album is an homage to the music he grew up on in the
1960's. Other forms of media also has Homage in them. For
example: Chicken Run is one great big homage to The Great
Escape. Wreck It Ralph is a huge homage to older gamers as it
brings to life the arcade games they used to play as children. In
Superman Returns, Superman rescues a runaway car. The shot
where Superman stands on the ground, leveraging the car in
mid-air, is a direct homage to the cover of Action Comics #1,
the first Superman comic book. The pod race from The
Phantom Menace has quite a lot in common with the chariot
