Conjuring: Paranormal Horror
Plot:
The conjuring is a film based on a true story. In 1971, Carolyn and Roger Perron move their family into a
dilapidated Rhode Island farm house and soon strange things start happening around it with escalating
nightmarish terror. In desperation, Carolyn contacts the noted paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine
Warren, to examine the house. What the Warrens discover is a whole area steeped in a satanic haunting that is
now targeting the Perron family wherever they go. To stop this evil, the Warrens will have to call upon all their
skills and spiritual strength to defeat this spectral menace at its source that threatens to destroy everyone
involved.
The performance of tricks that are seemingly magical, typically involving sleight of hand: "a conjuring trick”.
Camera: The camera shots in this trailer are presented as if they are using a handheld camera which moves at very fasted pace causing the tension to
rise putting everyone on the edge, its used almost as a paradigm shift as you expect something to be there but in stead we see a wide shot of a old piano.
There is also a use of an extreme close up of a characters face who is playing the evil demon. A fast pace cut is used to scare the audience and introduce
the evil character this puts them on edge as they do not know what is going to jump out next. There is a lot of sequenced repetitive shots this gives the
impression something is soon going to change and jump out to scare the audience. The build up of the scare or the use of a paradigm puts the audience
more on edge than the actual scary parts of the trailer, Most horror films live up to the same conventions like the use of paradigm shifts and this is a
perfect example of how the director plans to scare the audience just with a few cuts from the film.
Mise-en-scene: We are shown an Old house surrounded by fields this is a typical scary story where there is no one around to witness what's happening
or help them, In the shot of the house its very misty and dark this symbolizes the mystery and fear to be unraveled. There a montage of images show we
see a grave stone, a skull, people gathered together in what looks like an exorcism or contacting the dead in some way and then we see the house. These
images all link to death in some way and in then the montage finishes at the house this gives us an idea of how the film is going to be giving us a taste of
the storyline.
Editing: In this trailer there are a lot of fasted paced cuts this is done to build tension, suspense and keeps the audience on edge. The quick cuts of
many images in a small period of time cause the view to build up a wall fear expecting the worst to come. The camera also flickers this implies an old
camera is being used to link to the theme of an true story from 1971 where they didn’t have up to date technology like we have now.
Sound: A sad mysterious non-diegtic use of sound is used in this trailer and gets louder and scary as a paradigm shift is used this builds the tension and
helps gets the audience on edge.
Shaun of the dead: Comedy Horror
Plot:
A man decides to turn his moribund life around by winning back his ex-girlfriend, reconciling his
relationship with his mother, and dealing with an entire community that has returned from the dead to eat
the living.
Camera: A medium shot is used to show Shaun and his friend having a discussion whilst there is a zombie in
the background, This adds comedy to the trailer as they are not taking it serious they are just standing there as a
zombie stumbles in their direction top come kill them. A long shot is used to show a bunch of zombies walking
identically whist nodding their head this looks as if they are trying to dance explore humour in the film. Dismissing
the fact that they eat humans and are destroying the human race the camera angle and actions have caused it to turn
into a joke. This is then mocked by Shaun an his friends as they try to fit in and act like them, we then notice all
seriousness has disappeared from the idea that their life's are in danger. This is then highlighted when a low angle
shot shows Shaun getting attacked by a zombie but stops so his friend can take a picture. This film takes what can be
seen as a scary life threating situation and makes it into a hilarious film that explores the relationship of two friends.
Mise-en-scene: The opening of this trailer we see Shaun getting ready for work and doing every day things that
adults can relate to like eating breakfast and going to work, We then see Shaun jumping on trampoline which
implies he is childish and immature. Shaun then lights the bar on fire to protect themselves this sort of represents
the idea that his playing with fire as his taking such a serious situation as a joke.
Editing: As we see Shaun waking up he stumbles out of bed like a zombie and the editing is very slow but as his
getting ready and time passes the camera movement speeds up. This is used throughout the trailer showing the
difference between them and the zombies as the zombies look as if they have all ben [put in slow motion.
Sound: The use of non-diegetic music in this trailer suits more of an action film and yet again links to the comedy
sense this film will bring as it is not serious at all.
World War-Z: Sci-Fi Horror
Plot:
United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is
toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
Camera: It opens up with a medium shot of a family in car the reason this is done in most horror films is so the audience can
relate and it more traumatizing if you can relate to the story and imagine that could happen to you. Then a high angle/point of
view (from the helicopters) shot is use to emphasis the fear in the characters as everyone is running away. A low angle shot is then
used to show the zombies pilling up on each other to get to the humans after this is cuts to an extreme close up of Brad Pitt to
show his fear and concern.
Mise-en-scene: We can see a city and cars yet again linking to a situation we can all put ourselves in making the story more
scary as we can relate to parts. We can also see two young girls in the back of the car one holding a teddy bear which emphasis
her childlike sense and helps sell the film to family orientated people as well as the sci-fi community.
Editing/Sound: The camera movement and music speeds up, gets more intense/quicker beat and adds a montage of fast
paced shots when the zombies are around this causes suspense and fear as the audience waits for them to reach their destination.
