3. Scope of soil engineering
Soil engineering has vast application in the construction of various
civil engineering works. Some of the important applications are as
under:
1. Foundation
2. Retaining Structure
3. Stability of Slopes
4. Underground structures
5. Pavement design
6. Earthen dam
4. 1. foundation
• Every civil engineering structures whether it is building a bridge or a
dam is founded on the surface of earth.
• Foundation are required to transmit the load of the structure of soil
safety and efficiently
5. 2. Retaining structure
• When sufficient space is
not available for a mass of
soil to spread and form a
safe slope a strcture is
require to retain the soil
• An earth retaining
structure is also require to
keep the soil at different
level on it’s either side
6. 3. Stability of slopes
• If soil surface is not horizontal there is component of weight of the
soil which tends to move it downward and that causes in stability of
slopes
• The slope maybe natural or man maded
• In figure slope is filling and cutting
7. 4. Underground structures
• The design and construction of underground structure such as tunnel
shaft conduits require evaluation of force exerted by the soil on the
structure
• The forces are discussed in soil engineering
8. 5. Pavement design
• A pavement is a hard crust place on soil subgrade for the purpose of
providing a smooth and strong surface on which vehicles can move.
• The pavement consist of surfacing such as a bitumen layer , base &
sub base
9. 6. Earthen dam
• Earth dam are huge structures in which soil is used a construction
material
• The earth dam are built of creating water reservoirs
• Design of earthen dam require a knowledge of soil engineering
