UTILIZATION OF INDUSTRIAL WASTE IN CONSTRUCTION
2
• In modern society construction has been an important
element in the rapidly changing. Innovation in
construction is linked with the development of advanced
construction material.
• In ancient cementitious materials lime alone or lime
combination with natural pozzolan , gypsum ,while the
modern ones are largly Portland cement.
• There would be a demand of combination of Portland
cement with large contents of mineral additives.
3
• Therefore, the search of alternative binder or cement
replacement material has become a technological interest and
there is an urgent need to develop newer concrete as reliable
and durable construction material.
• From ecological point of view (1) To produce binder
that consume less energy and less green house gases,
specially carbon dioxide,(2)To incorporate industrial by
product and recycled materials in cementitious binder
as well as in concrete and (3)To produce structure that
would function more efficiently over time,in terms of
their durability performance.
4
• Blended cements are produced by addition of cement
replacement material to ordinary Portland cement. Cement
material replacement by many of this mineral admixtures are
industrial wastes.
• Agricultural waste such as rice husk ash and sugarcane
bagasse ash are also considered as mineral admixtures due
to their pozzolanic property.
5
• The amount of Portland cement replaced with pozzolanic
materials depends not only the physical and chemical
properties of pozzolanic material, but depends upon the
characteristics of Portland cement and pozzolan.
• these include control of alkali- aggregate reaction,
improvement in durability properties it’s resistance against
corrosion of steel in concrete and reduction in the heat of
hydration. The standared replacement is 40% then strength
point of view appears to be less than 30%For poor pozzolanic
materials, the amount of replacement could reduce to 10% to
achieve strength equivalence at 28 days.
6
Need of study
• Planning the waste
management and recycling
of industrial waste produced
in this country is an very
hard task which considered
both scientific planning and
logistical knowledge and
understanding in order to
balance the affect on the
environment.
7
8
• Waste management industries are also feeling an
extra pressure to perform their role in the
greenest ways possible.
• Humans simply dug a hole and buried their
waste. because their population was relatively
small This was an effective technique for these
early people and they did not produce waste on
the same scale or with the levels of modern
humans do. It helped to prevent bugs and
rodents from spreading diseases.
9
• In the modern world filling all of our rubbish is not a
suitable solution. While native humans produced very
little waste, and that which was produced would
biodegrade quickly, modern humans produce much
larger amounts of waste, much of which is not
biodegradable.
• Additionally, many types of waste may be damaging to
the soil, ground water and surrounding environment.
• The most important reason for utilization waste is the
and the health of the population protection of the
environment.
10
11
What is Industrial waste???
• Industrial waste which is produced activities which
has includes of any type of material melted in order
to separate out of impurities which also known as
rendered material after manufacturing process such
that industries, dairy, mills , etc.
• and this started since the industrial revolution. Some
of the industrial wastes are chemicals solvents,
sludge, pigments, ash, metals.
• In our project we use Rice hush ash and glass powder
as waste materials.
12
13
Types of industrial waste
1. Organic waste
2. Inorganic waste
Organic Waste(agro Waste)
The waste material included
in this category are of
plant organic, coconut
pith, rice husk, wheat
husk, ground nut husk,
etc.
14
2.Inorganic waste
• The inorganic waste which are hard,
particularly, the demolition waste such as
broken concrete, broken bricks and crushed
glass can be used to produce concrete of
requisite strength and durability.
15
16
17
What is R.H.A???
• Rice husk is burnt into ash which fulfills
the physical characteristics and chemical
composition of admixtures.
• rice husk ash Pozzolanic activity depends
on
(1) silica content(Sio2), and
(2) ash particles.
18
Rice Husk Ash (R.H.A)
19
• After burning of Rice husks it produced
pozzolanic properties in higher level.RHA are
affected due to burning process and
temperature of Chemical compositions.
20
• with higher the burning temperature Silica
content in the Rice husk ash increases. The
effect of partial replacement of RHA with
different percentages in cement for
compressive strength and durability.
21
Fig:- Rice husk ash 22
Chemical properties of R.H.A
SR.NO PARTICULARS PROPORTION
1 Silicon dioxide 86.94%
2 Aluminium oxide 0.2%
3 Iron oxide 0.1%
4 Calcium oxide 0.3-2.2%
5 Magnesium oxide 0.2-0.6%
6 Sodium oxide 0.1-0.8%
7 Potatium oxide 2.15-2.30%
8 Ignition loss 3.15-4.4%
23
24
• Rice husk ash essentially consist of
amorphous silica (90% sio2), (5%
carbon), and (2% k2o). the specific
surface of RHA is between 40-100
m2/g.
• India produces about 122
million ton of paddy every year.
Each ton of paddy produce 40 kg of
RHA. There is good potential to
make use of RHA as a valuable
pozzolanic material to give the
almost same properties as that of
microsilica.
25
26
Merits & Demerits
27
MARITS OF RHA
ď‚· Improves the compressive strength.
ď‚· RHA mixed concrete shows better bond strength as compared to
opc cement.
ď‚· Permeability of concrete decreases improves compressive
strength.
ď‚· RHA makes a role to increased resistance to chemical attack.
ď‚· Show better durability of concrete.
ď‚· Improves resistance to sulfate attack.
ď‚· Reduce the amount of cement making concrete by 20% by
weight.
ď‚· Improves the corrosion resistance and strength of concrete
as compared to that of OPC concrete.
ď‚· Reduces effects of alkali-silica reactivity.
ď‚· Reduces shrinkage due to particle packing, making concrete
denser.
ď‚· Enhances workability of concrete.
ď‚· Reduces heat grow through the walls of buildings.
ď‚· Reduces amount of super plasticizer.
ď‚· Decreases air permeability due to the filler and pozzolanic
effect.
28
ď‚· Reduces the plasticity of soil.
ď‚· Increases compressive strength and decreases leachability.
ď‚· Reduces material cost and emission of CO due to less
cement utilization.
ď‚· RHA could be used as an alternative source for high
surface area silica.
29
DEMARITS OF RHA
Having the more benefits using RHA in cement or concrete, it
shows a few disadvantages that are mentioned below
ď‚· Suitable incinerator/furnace as well as grinding method is
required for burning and
grinding rice husk in order to obtain good quality ash.
ď‚· Strength of concrete is reduced for larger (beyond 30%)
replacement.
ď‚· There is a little transportation problem.
ď‚· Unburnt RHA is not suitable for concrete production
30
what is glass waste?
• Waste glass is one of the main causes of
environment pollution and it cannot be used as a
land filling in low lying area.
• Today glass is used in construction industries in
large quantity, and large amount of glass is
powdered daily. And disposal of glass powder is
not convenient and it causes environment issues.
31
32
• Size of glass powder is less than 6000 micron is
pozzolanic behavior.
• Glass powder replacement with Cement of 5%,
10% 15% and 20% and properties of this
concrete compared with nominal concrete.

CONCLUSION
38
Based on result & study on strength of Rice husk ash, the
following conclusion are drawn.
• At all partial replacement level of rice husk ash; there is
some amount of increase in strength from 3 to 7 days.
However in compressive strength from 7 to 28 days the
significant increase is drawn.
•Using of rice husk ash in replacement with concrete the
greenhouse gases can be decreased to a greater extent. And
reduce the number of carbon credit in our environment.
•The economic advantage of rice husk ash used in
concrete should be exploited by construction and
rice industries, rice growing nations in Asia are
more.
•Also Rice husk based concrete blocks reduce the
room temperature. So, air condition work is reduce
resulting in electric energy saving.
•Rice husk ash based concrete weight is lighter
than nominal concrete, so it can be used as light
weight construction material.
39
• Use of rice husk ash improving the
impermeability characteristics of concrete, also
it enhance the strength of concrete.
• Rice husk ash is waste material, so it reduces
the overall cost of construction

Utilization of industrial wast in coonstruction

  • 2. SUB:- PROJECT 1 (2170001) GUIDED BY: Jugal mistry NAME ENROLLMENT NO. PRAJAPATI JIIGNESH M. 151240106061 PRAJAPATI MITESH P. 151240106064 PRAJAPATI NILESH D. 151240106065 PRAJAPATI TIRATH A. 151240106066 UTILIZATION OF INDUSTRIAL WASTE IN CONSTRUCTION 2
  • 3. • In modern society construction has been an important element in the rapidly changing. Innovation in construction is linked with the development of advanced construction material. • In ancient cementitious materials lime alone or lime combination with natural pozzolan , gypsum ,while the modern ones are largly Portland cement. • There would be a demand of combination of Portland cement with large contents of mineral additives. 3
  • 4. • Therefore, the search of alternative binder or cement replacement material has become a technological interest and there is an urgent need to develop newer concrete as reliable and durable construction material. • From ecological point of view (1) To produce binder that consume less energy and less green house gases, specially carbon dioxide,(2)To incorporate industrial by product and recycled materials in cementitious binder as well as in concrete and (3)To produce structure that would function more efficiently over time,in terms of their durability performance. 4
  • 5. • Blended cements are produced by addition of cement replacement material to ordinary Portland cement. Cement material replacement by many of this mineral admixtures are industrial wastes. • Agricultural waste such as rice husk ash and sugarcane bagasse ash are also considered as mineral admixtures due to their pozzolanic property. 5
  • 6. • The amount of Portland cement replaced with pozzolanic materials depends not only the physical and chemical properties of pozzolanic material, but depends upon the characteristics of Portland cement and pozzolan. • these include control of alkali- aggregate reaction, improvement in durability properties it’s resistance against corrosion of steel in concrete and reduction in the heat of hydration. The standared replacement is 40% then strength point of view appears to be less than 30%For poor pozzolanic materials, the amount of replacement could reduce to 10% to achieve strength equivalence at 28 days. 6
  • 7. Need of study • Planning the waste management and recycling of industrial waste produced in this country is an very hard task which considered both scientific planning and logistical knowledge and understanding in order to balance the affect on the environment. 7
  • 8. 8
  • 9. • Waste management industries are also feeling an extra pressure to perform their role in the greenest ways possible. • Humans simply dug a hole and buried their waste. because their population was relatively small This was an effective technique for these early people and they did not produce waste on the same scale or with the levels of modern humans do. It helped to prevent bugs and rodents from spreading diseases. 9
  • 10. • In the modern world filling all of our rubbish is not a suitable solution. While native humans produced very little waste, and that which was produced would biodegrade quickly, modern humans produce much larger amounts of waste, much of which is not biodegradable. • Additionally, many types of waste may be damaging to the soil, ground water and surrounding environment. • The most important reason for utilization waste is the and the health of the population protection of the environment. 10
  • 11. 11
  • 12. What is Industrial waste??? • Industrial waste which is produced activities which has includes of any type of material melted in order to separate out of impurities which also known as rendered material after manufacturing process such that industries, dairy, mills , etc. • and this started since the industrial revolution. Some of the industrial wastes are chemicals solvents, sludge, pigments, ash, metals. • In our project we use Rice hush ash and glass powder as waste materials. 12
  • 13. 13
  • 14. Types of industrial waste 1. Organic waste 2. Inorganic waste Organic Waste(agro Waste) The waste material included in this category are of plant organic, coconut pith, rice husk, wheat husk, ground nut husk, etc. 14
  • 15. 2.Inorganic waste • The inorganic waste which are hard, particularly, the demolition waste such as broken concrete, broken bricks and crushed glass can be used to produce concrete of requisite strength and durability. 15
  • 16. 16
  • 17. 17
  • 18. What is R.H.A??? • Rice husk is burnt into ash which fulfills the physical characteristics and chemical composition of admixtures. • rice husk ash Pozzolanic activity depends on (1) silica content(Sio2), and (2) ash particles. 18
  • 19. Rice Husk Ash (R.H.A) 19
  • 20. • After burning of Rice husks it produced pozzolanic properties in higher level.RHA are affected due to burning process and temperature of Chemical compositions. 20
  • 21. • with higher the burning temperature Silica content in the Rice husk ash increases. The effect of partial replacement of RHA with different percentages in cement for compressive strength and durability. 21
  • 22. Fig:- Rice husk ash 22
  • 23. Chemical properties of R.H.A SR.NO PARTICULARS PROPORTION 1 Silicon dioxide 86.94% 2 Aluminium oxide 0.2% 3 Iron oxide 0.1% 4 Calcium oxide 0.3-2.2% 5 Magnesium oxide 0.2-0.6% 6 Sodium oxide 0.1-0.8% 7 Potatium oxide 2.15-2.30% 8 Ignition loss 3.15-4.4% 23
  • 24. 24
  • 25. • Rice husk ash essentially consist of amorphous silica (90% sio2), (5% carbon), and (2% k2o). the specific surface of RHA is between 40-100 m2/g. • India produces about 122 million ton of paddy every year. Each ton of paddy produce 40 kg of RHA. There is good potential to make use of RHA as a valuable pozzolanic material to give the almost same properties as that of microsilica. 25
  • 26. 26
  • 27. Merits & Demerits 27 MARITS OF RHA ď‚· Improves the compressive strength. ď‚· RHA mixed concrete shows better bond strength as compared to opc cement. ď‚· Permeability of concrete decreases improves compressive strength. ď‚· RHA makes a role to increased resistance to chemical attack. ď‚· Show better durability of concrete. ď‚· Improves resistance to sulfate attack. ď‚· Reduce the amount of cement making concrete by 20% by weight.
  • 28. ď‚· Improves the corrosion resistance and strength of concrete as compared to that of OPC concrete. ď‚· Reduces effects of alkali-silica reactivity. ď‚· Reduces shrinkage due to particle packing, making concrete denser. ď‚· Enhances workability of concrete. ď‚· Reduces heat grow through the walls of buildings. ď‚· Reduces amount of super plasticizer. ď‚· Decreases air permeability due to the filler and pozzolanic effect. 28
  • 29. ď‚· Reduces the plasticity of soil. ď‚· Increases compressive strength and decreases leachability. ď‚· Reduces material cost and emission of CO due to less cement utilization. ď‚· RHA could be used as an alternative source for high surface area silica. 29
  • 30. DEMARITS OF RHA Having the more benefits using RHA in cement or concrete, it shows a few disadvantages that are mentioned below ď‚· Suitable incinerator/furnace as well as grinding method is required for burning and grinding rice husk in order to obtain good quality ash. ď‚· Strength of concrete is reduced for larger (beyond 30%) replacement. ď‚· There is a little transportation problem. ď‚· Unburnt RHA is not suitable for concrete production 30
  • 31. what is glass waste? • Waste glass is one of the main causes of environment pollution and it cannot be used as a land filling in low lying area. • Today glass is used in construction industries in large quantity, and large amount of glass is powdered daily. And disposal of glass powder is not convenient and it causes environment issues. 31
  • 32. 32
  • 33. • Size of glass powder is less than 6000 micron is pozzolanic behavior. • Glass powder replacement with Cement of 5%, 10% 15% and 20% and properties of this concrete compared with nominal concrete. 33

  • 38. CONCLUSION 38 Based on result & study on strength of Rice husk ash, the following conclusion are drawn. • At all partial replacement level of rice husk ash; there is some amount of increase in strength from 3 to 7 days. However in compressive strength from 7 to 28 days the significant increase is drawn. •Using of rice husk ash in replacement with concrete the greenhouse gases can be decreased to a greater extent. And reduce the number of carbon credit in our environment.
  • 39. •The economic advantage of rice husk ash used in concrete should be exploited by construction and rice industries, rice growing nations in Asia are more. •Also Rice husk based concrete blocks reduce the room temperature. So, air condition work is reduce resulting in electric energy saving. •Rice husk ash based concrete weight is lighter than nominal concrete, so it can be used as light weight construction material. 39
  • 40. • Use of rice husk ash improving the impermeability characteristics of concrete, also it enhance the strength of concrete. • Rice husk ash is waste material, so it reduces the overall cost of construction 40
