Toddlers And Tiaras Research Paper
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" – Margaret Wolfe Hungerford.
This stands to be true in the circumstances of beauty pageants. However, the age old question
continues as positive body image and confidence twindle among young teens. Do pageants create
unrealistic ideals of young women? And are parents sexualising their daughters by entering them in
pageants like seen on TLCs Toddlers And Tiaras? No matter how much research; the debate will
continue. Are Pageants Exploiting Young Women?
In today's society there is a fine line between too far and far enough. Beauty pageants, like those
profiled on TLCs "Toddlers And Tiaras" is a prime example of this. Some parents prefer to keep
their daughters looking natural and let them decide when they want to stop competing. While others
pressure their daughters into acrylic nails, spray tans, as well as provocative routines and tasteless
costumes. During a pageant aired on Toddlers And Tiaras, three year old, Paisley Dickey appeared
on stage wearing a costume based off of Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman. Anyone who's
seen the movie knows that Julia Roberts character is known for making some "artistic choices".
Wendy Dickey, paisley's mom addressed the media saying "Everyone in the room was laughing
hysterically, It was meant to be funny, not sexual at all. I made the dress myself! It barely went
above the knee, very non–revealing and non–sexy." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
yearly, and nearly 2.5 million competitors in the United States alone. About 72% (1.8 million) of
those women hire pageant coaches. Many believe that pageant queens must be incredibly skinny;
which is once again, a very false statement. Only 6% of the 2.5 million competitors have reported
issues with positive body image, which equates to 150,000

Us : Oligarchy Or Republic?
US: Oligarchy or Republic? In America, we pride ourselves on being a democracy and having
choices, when in fact, it is only a political illusion. In the Constitution of the United States (which
we are all held accountable to abide by), it states that we are a republic with regard to the people's
desire to be a democracy, yet there is much evidence that leans towards America being an oligarchy.
While a republic is a country which elects representatives to make government decisions on their
behalf, an oligarchy is a system in which a small group of people controls the country. The debate of
American being an oligarchy assumes that elites have power in many aspects of government, such
as the Electoral College and the election process, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Congress make up the Legislative branch, which is in charge of making bills that potentially
turn into laws (Congress and California Legislation lecture). These Congressmen are also a part of
the electors in the Electoral College, which has the power to choose the President with a majority
vote. While electors are usually inclined to vote in accordance with the people they represent, they
can instead vote in opposition if they think that it is a better vote for the people (Soni 2012). In the
past election, even though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, Donald Trump won the Presidency
with the majority votes from the Electoral College (Krieg 2017). Thus, the many elites in the
Legislative branch, have the power to make bills and elect the president regardless of what the
people want. Similarly, elites have power in the Executive branch, which is composed of the
President and his cabinet. The current President, Donald Trump is an elite for many reasons. He
inherited family money (including a $1 million loan from his father to start a business) and his
father's real estate company. He also has fame and fortune from developing well–known buildings,
such as Trump Place. He is also a successful businessman as he owned Miss Universe, Miss USA,
and Miss Teen USA for 20 years. He also got paid $213 million for his presence on NBC's
television show, "The Apprentice." Furthermore, Forbes states that his net

The Mass Media 's Representation Of Campaign Discourse
It is the chaotic month of November, and the fate of America lies in one candidate's hands. With the
election coming to its scandalous end, the country has been a tremendous user of television, internet,
newspaper, and radio. Presidential nominee, Donald Trump has not hesitated in releasing numerous
shocking statements, and the reporters have not resisted their urge of publishing his words.
Nevertheless, it is evident that, "By decreasing the effort necessary for journalists to gather
information, politicians can garner substantially more media attention for themselves" (Niven). But,
as one inspects the features of all mass media closely, a pattern of specific contents and people
constantly being under the radar can be noticed. The boundless attention from viewers, reporters and
advertisers bring fame, and support to candidates, whether it being for negative or positive purposes.
While covering every aspect of candidates, "The mass media's representation of campaign discourse
influences whether voters have the opportunity to scrutinize the candidates' issue priorities and
policy proposals" (Hayes). High ratings, biased opinions, exaggerated news, and politically
incorrect expressions are usually the type of contents drawing the society to itself. Similarly, due to
his erratic and unexpected behavior, Trump has gained vast news coverage, risen to fame through
social media, and gotten both honored and dishonored simultaneously throughout his candidacy.

Controversial Topics- Beauty Pageants
Beauty Pageants: From Prim to Poisoned Her eyes glimmer with the latest layer of eyeliner. Her
cheeks, a wind–bitten pink, ache from constant smiles. She combs her hair, unaware of the damage
she is inflicting on herself. She looks around. Some wear false hair, others false teeth. Every
participant there is driven by the same potential outcome of beauty: meticulous hair, white smile,
bright eyes, and a thin figure. Everybody strives for that same superficial facade – not the average
values for a 5–year–old–girl. Since 1921 beauty pageants have been the roots of society's delusive
portrayal of beauty and until they are stopped, they will continue to cause detrimental impacts on a
female's perception of her self worth. Pageants began as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

William Pinsof, a clinical psychologist and president of the Family Institute at Northwestern
University says, "Being a little Barbie doll says your body has to be a certain way and your hair has
to be a certain way. In girls particularly, this can unleash a whole complex of destructive self–
experiences that can lead to eating disorders and all kinds of body distortions in terms of body
image" (Children). Currently, 15% of young women in America have some type of eating disorder
(Eating). Some grow up with the idea that the thinner they are, the more attractive they are. This can
lead to unfortunate interpretations of their body. In order to fulfill their perception of the ideal
figure, they dangerously push boundaries; 50% of girls 8 to 10 years old say they are unhappy with
their size, 40% of fourth graders admit to previously being on a diet, and more than 50% of girls 9
to 15 years old have exercised to lose weight (Pulling). Only to reward their behavior, the judges of
the pageants asses the contestant's physical appearance based on these superficial themes. The past
winners are no role models either. The majority of Miss America winners have been
'undernourished' on the BMI scale, or Body Mass Index, a relation of someones height to their
weight. Beauty role models are setting a poor example of how they should be taking care of
themselves: Miss America 2008 is a recovering anorexic (Huey). As

Voting Age Should Be Lowered
The Voting Age Should be Lowered to 16 Lowering the voting age in the United States is a constant,
ever growing, immensely debatable issue which will continue to divide the US for years to come.
Until change is present, American elections won't have the complete opinion of the population. The
main counterargument to this idea is that teens aren't properly informed about this particular topic,
however, there are many intelligent teens who are very capable of making educated decisions. Many
teenagers hear their parents and families talk about politics and their personal views, creating a
greater incentive for these teens to vote. Increasing the voting turnout is the primary reason that I
believe the voting age should be lowered. On average, around 57% of the eligible voting population
voted in the previous three presidential elections, a major factor in determining the results (Hubby,
2016). Not only can decreasing the voting age increase the turnout of teens, but also for future adult
voters. The majority of 18 year olds will miss out on their first voting opportunity because they go
off to college, where they are not eligible to vote. According to Marek Steedman, a political science
professor and director of American studies at The University of Southern Mississippi, "Many
college–age students do not pick up that habit because they live far from where they might be
eligible to vote; or because they are in college in a place where they do not normally reside and feel

Beauty Pageants: Why They Are Good for Children
Beauty Pageants: Why they are good for children Beauty Pageants have a positive impact on
children because they will boost children's self–esteem up. Ms Ng Siau Hwei, a senior psychologist
from departments of pediatrics at National University Hospital in Singapore says, "Getting involved
with dressing and make–up may be a novel experience for kids and showing their talents in front of
a crowd can boost their confidence" (Yap 1). By children being able to express their talents in front
of a group of people dressed up and have their make–up done in pageants will boost a child's self–
esteem because they are able to be themselves. Now a days one cannot be themselves without being
judged because it is not the "style", being able to express ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By doing that, the child, teenager, or adult will have experience in speaking in front of people which
will help them in the long run. Rita Panahi, writer of article Wise Up, Girls, Stupidity Is Never a
Good Look, said, "Let's be frank, beauty pageants are, funnily enough, all about beauty and nothing
else" (5). This is so wrong because beauty pageants are not just about beauty, a lot of them are
actually about question, talents, and speaking. By people saying that beauty pageants are only about
beauty, it puts a bad reputation on beauty pageants. Beauty pageants are not bad at all, they actually
help children more than school when it comes to speaking out in front of people. In school, more
than likely, they know almost more than half the people they are talking too, but in beauty pageants,
they more than likely only know the people they brought with them, so out of the hundreds of
people, they probably only know 5 people. By that being said, beauty pageants do help children
with their social skills. The last reason as to why child beauty pageants have a positive impact on
children is because they can earn scholarship money to the college of their choice. For example, a
15 year–old, Nicola Dalryimple, former winner of Trinidad and Tobago Pageant, received a $5,000
scholarship to a college of her choice ("Trinidad and Tobago" 1–2). The many people who say that
beauty pageants are nothing but beauty

The Good news of Pageantry
Unless the skeptics have proper knowledge and understanding, they are unable to understand the
criteria for judging a pageant. There are so many reasons to enter a beauty pageant. Although the
stereotype is multitudes of girls with big hair, caked on makeup, and fake personalities; being a size
0, or 2 that's not even close to reality! To tell the whole truth about pageants skeptics have to be
open minded and erase all of their prior knowledge of what the portray pageants to be. Yes pageants
do portray perfection, but that's not the half of it. Honestly girls don't have to be a size two or
"pretty" or have their makeup caked on, but they do have to have to love themselves and except who
they are, and have plenty self confidence. Self Confidence is the number one out of all of the
reasons to enter a beauty pageant. Miss Teen Arizona said " You would never catch me talking in
front of large crowds, or being social at all..... until my mom entered me in my first pageant amongst
213 girls! Talk about life changing!" She walked away by being 4th runner up, and as in awe about
how much self confidence she had gained over that one weekend! If she can gain that much self
confidence over one weekend then just imagine how many young women could be inflicted for the
good in just one weekend! Self Confidence is hard for girls to obtain. People bring them down
everyday, and it not okay. It's a well known fact that girls are "givers", it's in their natural being to
want to give. Some

Feminist Feminism
Growing up, fashion and make–up were never part of my life. I have never liked wearing skirts or
dresses, I have no idea how to apply make–up, and I do not have any desire to do either. However,
as I grew up, I realized that was not the norm of my friends, or "women" in general. When thinking
about this paper, I suddenly recalled an episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight, where he
discussed the Miss America Pageant. I had heard of the pageant before, but I never knew they were
a scholarship foundation until watching his show. The Miss America Pageant has been in existence
for nearly one hundred years, yet they still judge women primarily on their physical beauty; making
it difficult to believe their true mission is to want to help change the lives of young women across
America. Though they state they are an organization for women, they enforce anti–feminist and
patriarchal views of women. The Miss America Organization, comprised of the Pageant and the
Foundation, boasts that it is the "nation's largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women,
awarding millions every year in cash and in–kind scholarships" (missamerica.org/about–us/).
However, it is hard to see the connection between academic scholarship and watching women
parade around a stage in swimsuits. According to their "about us" page, under the heading "We Fund
Scholars," it states that the "Miss America Foundation strives to change lives and influence young
women across the country and around the

Teen Suicide Research Paper
People need to be informed on why teens commit suicide and what signs to look for. Teens are
slowly slipping away because of this deadly subject and people need to start noticing. Sometimes
people can get caught up in their own personal lives and not even notice when a loved one is
considering suicide. In the seven articles read, there were a variety of things that people seem to
overlook often. Why teens are committing suicide and what people can do to help victims who are

There can be many attributes to teen suicide but knowing the risks may help someone in need.
Suicide can occur after experiencing a stressful life event for teens. Perceived failure at school, a
break up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, the death of a loved one, a divorce or a major family
conflict. Here is a list below From Kids Health that gives some signs to look for when a teen might
be considering suicide.
* Talk about suicide or death in general * Talk about "going away" * Pull away from friends or
family * Lose the desire to take part in favorite things or activities * Have trouble concentrating or
thinking clearly * Experience changes in eating or sleeping habits * Self–destructive behavior
(drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or driving too fast, for example)
In a recent article by Jane Brody in the New York Times, she summarized research showing major
risk factors for teen suicide.
1. Depression – often not recognized. 2. Substance abuse. Sometimes teens try alcohol or other
drugs to relieve depression. 3. Behavioral problems – getting in trouble in school or with the law,
fighting with parents – is the third risk factor for suicide. 4. Availability of a gun. This makes the
consequences of an impulsive act much more lethal. 5. Previous attempts. Half of all children who

Family Is The Most Significant Impact On My Life
Family is my everything. Family has shaped both my character and my identity; however, my sister
has had the most significant impact on me. My sister, Jordan, and I grew up as any typical sisters
would. We never saw eye to eye and fought over who borrowed whose shirt. That all changed the
summer going into my freshman year of high school and her freshman year of college. Jordan's
dream college was Arizona State University and unfortunately we were still living in Colorado at
the time. My family was in nowhere of a financial position to be sending her out of state. We were
faced with the ultimatum of either moving to Arizona or sacrificing her college dream. The move to
Arizona was mutually difficult for us. For the first time we were both in a vulnerable state of mind
and it was essential to rely on each other for support. This situation taught me about the importance
of sacrifice. I was a tenacious and selfish teenager who needed to learn what it meant to sacrifice for
loved ones. That is something Jordan enlightened me on. That first year rapidly changed the
dynamic of our sisterhood. She was no longer solely my sister; but, she was my ally, therapist, critic,
teacher, and most of all best friend. Each year that I mature, I learn and strive to me more like my
sister. She has influenced my identity even more than I would perceive possible. She has taught me
to be strong. In the middle of high school, my parents had decided to get a divorce. This decision
opened up an entire

her why she decided to continue competing for the title despite knowing her potential boss said
these things about Mexicans. Her response was simple, she was not going to let someone define
who she is, not even "The Donald." She felt that if she would've pulled out of the competition she
would not only let the state down, but let the Rio Grande Valley down. Ylianna thinks it is sad that
people feel at a disadvantage because they are from the valley. She believes that anyone can do
anything as long as they work for it. It doesn't matter where you are from. As Miss Texas USA this

they could achieve their dreams and goals as long as they worked for them. Being Miss Texas USA

Detrimental Effects of Beauty Pageants
There is an ongoing debate on the detrimental effects that beauty pageants can have on their
contestants. Judged solely on physical beauty, beauty pageants have been around for quite some
time. The first pageant, the Miss America pageant, was held in 1921. Miss Universe and Miss USA
soon followed, and by the 1960's beauty pageants were part of American culture. Viewed as a
positive and potentially rewarding competition, pageants have now recently had a drastic turn of
view. Advocates of beauty pageants put forth that beauty contests develop self–esteem and
confidence (Ending the Hypersexualization of Girls). However, beauty pageants can be a highly
destructive concept that can put too much pressure on its contestants to look perfect, put parents in a
financial crisis, and quite frankly, be simply unhealthy. As well as participation in beauty pageants,
there is a rage of them on television as well. Television images and broadcasts have had a huge
impact on it's participants and the type of messages they internalize about what is "normal". (Could
Child Beauty Pageants Be Banned in the USA?). Children, as well as teens, view what they see on
television as what they must become. Beauty pageants are very undermining to the participants
emotional health, the pressure to look perfect, and it's countless negative effects they possess. The
long–standing opinion in the psychological community about beauty pageants is that they are not in

Beauty Pageants Essay
Young girls and women all over the world have different things they like to be involved in, such as
sports, music, or art. Pageantry is an activity that is important for girls because it could help them
reach their full potential., but is Pageants are important because of the history behind them, the
different event categories they consist of, and the different pros and cons they have. Pageants have a
very fascinating history. "Bathing beauty" pageants, or swimsuit pageants, started in 1917 during the

18). The different guidelines and rules in the original pageants have helped mold them into what
they are today. Pageants also consist of many different things. There are many varying types of
pageants, but the two main categories of pageants are beauty and scholarship. The famous Miss
America pageant helped coin the term "scholarship pageant" and helped change women's lives.
Through this, The Miss America Organization has earned much respect (Pageant Center, n.d.N.D.).
"Miss America represents the highest ideals. She is a real combination of beauty, grace, intelligence,
artistic, and refined..." (Psych Guides, 2017, para. 5). On the other hand, Miss Universe, Miss USA,
Miss Teen USA, and Miss World are beauty pageants, because they are based solely on looks and
not personality, platform, or skill (Pageant Center, n.d.N.D., para. 16–27). A pageant's makeup will
determine what the judges are looking for and what type of people one would be competing against.
Pageants judge one's first impression, evening gown, and swimsuit or fitness. These are the "beauty"
aspects of the pageant. The first impression is the first judged portion of the competition for a
beauty pageant and is the second judged portion of a scholarship pageant. The first impression is the
introduction of the contestants onstage. The evening gown is usually at the very end of the pageant
and is combined with the onstage question. The dress can be judged for how well it looks on the

The New Addiction- Smartphones
Today Teenagers of the world have a new addiction. This new addiction is known as smartphones.
Teenagers between 15&17 nowadays are using smartphones without limits. Everywhere you turn
you see teens bending down or swiping or clicking their phones screen or sleeping with their
smartphones under the pillow. Day after day smartphones are becoming more central to teenagers
lives. A smartphone could be well–defines as a portable phone that has additional functions parallel
to personal digital assistance devices. Smartphones simplify communication and offer fast and easy
access to almost every single information needed in teens everyday life. But the fact the
smartphones took place over other devices such as cameras, clocks, library books, and computer
games make them more and more important, which also makes teens dependent to them. The
benefits could be severely undermined if mishandling and over use are not kept in check and under
controlled. Although older teenagers would disagree their use of smartphone should be monitored
by parents, because smartphone are distracting teenagers, causing them health problems, in addition
to encouraging them sexually. Teenagers are being distracted by their smartphones in many different
ways, that's why the use of them should be monitored by parents. To illustrate, texting, chatting,
tweeting, playing and watching videos on YouTube are enjoyable activates that many teens choose
to do during their spare time. However,

A Surreal Moment Of My Surprise
A Surreal Moment
My heart was pounding, the ballroom was silent and there I was standing in the top two on the Miss
Teen USA stage. All of my hard work and dedication had paid off in that moment. As I was standing
there hand in hand with Miss California Teen, I felt like I had been there before. I had dreamed
about this moment but never expected it to really happen. Strangely, I had a sense of peace – I knew
something big was about to happen, and that my life was about to change. The crown was placed on
my head, tears ran down my face, and I took my first walk as Miss Teen USA. It all started when I
was fourteen years old and after much encouragement from others I decided to compete in the Miss
Louisiana Teen USA pageant. As the youngest contestant, I felt I was at a disadvantage but decided

question which was my greatest fear. Being a high school freshman and juggling

Causes And Effects Of Substance Abuse
According to research done by the National Institute on Drug Abuse in April of 2017, drug–related
deaths have more than doubled since 2000. In 2004, the University of Michigan and the U.S. Bureau
of Justice Statistics, showed that 70.6 percent of high school seniors had used alcohol in the past
year. Substance abuse is when a person can not control their intake of drugs and/or alcohol. This
disease causes major health issues and distorts the thinking a person's mental health. This crisis is
important because it ruins the lives of millions of addicts, and affects all types of race, gender,
sexuality, and age group. Because this is manipulative illness heavy influences social environments,
addiction affects the lives of many impressionable adolescents. Substance abuse has been around
ever since alcohol and drugs have been legal and accessible. In 1864, the New York State Inebriate
Asylum was the first hospital created to treat alcoholism as a mental health condition. As years go
by, youth culture has been centered around use of drugs and alcohol due to them being a an act of
rebalance to parents and to fill voids they faces in their lives. Some of the causes of substance abuse
in teens are youth culture (rebellious actions and partying), peer pressure, family problems, or
adolescents to hide their anxiety and awkwardness. One major crisis that involves substance abuse
is the opioid epidemic, which is the increase in the use of prescription drugs and heroin. The

Cyberbullying: The Third-Leading Cause Of Teen Suicide
Suicide is the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally. Suicide is the
third leading cause to death in ages ten to twenty–four. It is approximated that for every successful
suicide there are about twenty–five suicide attempts made. Most suicidal teens believe that a reason
for living is also an excellent reason for dying. This tragic situation is ultimately preventable. The
fact of the matter is who has the initiative to enforce suicidal prevention? Suicide is rarely discussed
through public education, social media, and in homes. Suicide is viewed as a taboo topic. Simply
because nobody wants the burden of educating people on the horrifics, of people taking their own
lives. It is a difficult topic to discuss, especially to the younger mind, for it is too complex for
children to comprehend such an atrocity. However, that is society's problem, this is a problem that is
needed to be discussed. Michael and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sexting is a form of cyberbullying that often results in teen suicide. More than forty percent of girls
send semi–nude/nude pictures to the male gender. Over half of the nude photographs sent, are then
shared and/or posted on social media. This type of offense often leads to frequent and persistent
harassment from peers. Public education neglects giving attention to this type of "drama" because
they simply do not have time for it. Resulting in an adolescent taking their own life because they see
themselves as the burden not the victim. This in not the only type of bullying that results in
adolescent suicide. Bullying can start as early a child can understand emotion. Negative comments
from family members at all ages can plummet a child's self–esteem and make them feel worthless.

Beauty Pageants Make Strong Women Essay
3, 2, 1, its go time. Work it, work it, work it. Sabrina Nooruddin, Miss India Georgia 2009, article
"Not irony: Beauty pageants make strong women" is based on the ideas of personal unrealistic
thoughts and opinions. It is strictly based on only her specific experiences that were beneficial to
her. Her claim, that beauty pageants make strong women is misleading in the fact that she is not
clear and concise with her main ideas, she lacks ethos, logos, and pathos, and does not cover the
actual act of strutting down a run way with glitz and glam. Nooruddin views on beauty pageants
would be fulfilling and believable if she used credible outside sources other than herself. This would
provide the audience with a since of direction and organization making the article clear, concise, and
understandable. In fact, she is vague throughout the entire article. Nooruddin states that there is far
more to beauty pageants than physical beauty. Sadly, that is what the reality TV, Toddlers and
Tiaras, is displaying for the public eye. This shows that pageants are providing children to negative
media and they cannot embrace their childhood properly. If society and TV would stop glamorizing
pageants, maybe fewer behavioral problems would occur within girls from elementary to teens.
Overall, usually it is not the child's motivation to compete in pageants it is the parents pushing them
to do something they may not love (Nooruddin). With that being said, Martina Cartwright, Ph.D.,

American Public 's Knowledge And Involvement
This essay briefly describes the current state of the Americans public's knowledge and involvement
in news, geography, and politics, citing both anecdotal and formal academic examples. First, this
essay describes the American public's knowledge and involvement in news. Then, this essay
describes the American public's knowledge and involvement in geography. Finally, it describes the
American public's knowledge and involvement in politics. American Public's Understanding and
Involvement in News The American public has very little understanding and involvement in the
news. It is assumed that the people are stupid, ignorant, disregarded, and that they seek unreliable
sources of information about important news events (Shenkman 14). The two causes that suggest
this is that the public is either uninterested or is not well–informed. Anecdotal example The
American public has almost no understanding and involvement in the news. The younger
generation, specifically, finds absolutely no interest in the news and believes that it is irrelevant. For
example, "when one college teacher required a class to listen to NPR for an hour, one student
summed up the general reaction to the experience by calling it 'torture'" (Shenkman 27). This shows
that students do not understand the importance of politics and are rather bored with the current
news. Formal Academic example The American public rarely reads the newspaper anymore because
most people do not think the news is of that much

Negative Effects Of Social Media On Teenagers
Bailey Ferrer The Negative Effects of Social Media on Teenagers Over the past decade, many social
media sites and apps have gained popularity among teenagers in America. Millions of teenagers use
Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter on a daily basis, staying glued to their phones so they
never miss an update. These sites provide a great way to stay in touch with friends, share photos,
and follow celebrities in their daily lives, but they can also have negative effects on users. Social
media has had detrimental effects on the lives of today's teenagers by distracting them from school
work, negatively impacting their sleeping habits, and causing them emotional distress. The first
negative effect of social media on teenagers is that it is a distraction from activities that they should
be focusing on. A report by Common Sense Media showed that "teens in the United States spend
about nine hours using media for their enjoyment" (Wallace). This is more time than they spend in
school or even sleeping. If they spend nine hours each day on social media, it is equal to more than a
full–time job. With so much time spent on their phones, how could teenagers have time to focus on
studying or any other productive activity in their lives? Part of the problem is that social media is so
readily available at all times of the day and night. Social media sites are mostly accessed through a
cell phone, which most teenagers have with them all the time. Smartphones allow teenagers to go

The Irony Of Banning Books In Schools
Once upon a time, in a world not far from here, there are students who are forced to miss their
annual train ride to Hogwarts, lock the wardrobe to the magical land of Narnia, and walk through
the English countryside themselves instead of upon the back of Black Beauty. Why are these
students deprived of those occurrences? They live in America, the land of the free– except when it
comes to the books they can read. In fact, many schools across America exercise the practice of
banning books. Since 1982, libraries, parents, and schools have attempted to ban 11,300 novels,
according to the American Library Association. The essentially innoxious books are challenged for
an assortment of reasons, including use of malapropos language, graphic or explicit ... Show more

Supporters of banning say profanity can negatively influence the actions and thoughts of readers,
especially younger readers that may not have heard or read many corrupt words. Huckleberry Finn,
a book commonly inveighed for its use of contentious racial language, is commonly challenged for
that reason. For USA Today, Martha Moore wrote, "When the younger reader is staring at that word
five times on a given page and the instructor is saying, 'Mark Twain didn't mean this and you have
to read it with an appreciation of irony,' you're asking a lot of a younger reader". Granted, foul
vocabulary is a challenge that academies need to address, but not through barring novels. Besides, if
the reader is sufficiently mature for the book, they can still learn from it. For instance, some racial
characterizations do not intentionally persecute people, but show the contrasting tensions between
them, conforming to the time period. Again, the article "Huck Finn Navigating Choppy Waters
Again" revealed, "The word is there for a reason... The word is terrible, it's hurtful, but it's there for
a reason" (Moore). The racial epithets used in that book convey the attitude of Missouri in the 1840s
when friction between African Americans and white people was rising. Additionally, banning a book
due to concerns about the language is not beneficial to pupils because it prevents them from learning
from other components of the book. "Often the organizations or schools that ban these books fail to
see the book as a whole; they often center on the one page, the one scene or even the one word
containing the offensive language or meaning and judge the whole book based on that one aspect,"
according to an article by Adriana Lopez. She makes a sound point. A book contains a whole plot

Stand By Me Essay
Describe an important theme in your text. Explain how this theme helped you understand an
important lesson about life
The film Stand by Me, directed by Rob Reiner is a coming of age story about four boys finding the
body of Ray Brower and going through many obstacles in their personal lives. Set in the small
fictional town of Castle rock, Oregon, USA; Gordie, Chris, Vern and Teddy set off to find the body
of Ray Brower, a student in their school not much older than the boys. One of the main themes
throughout the movie is the value of friendship. A life lesson that I learned through this film is that
friends help out when in need or in a difficult situation. The film shows the viewers the importance
of friendship through difficult situations. The relationship between Gordie and Chris is fueled by
understanding each other. When Chris opens up to Gordie about him not stealing the milk money,
Gordie understood how it felt to have pressure from the society to act a certain way because of his
family. Chris's family had a imperfect reputation which caused him to be treated differently at

Teens are more likely to respond to calls, text while driving, and riding than adults. They talk and

bring joy and elation. But in case of delayed response or no response, this same pleasure turns into
disappointment. 4) Cancer: Research shows that electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile

teens are still developing and have a greater risk of developing brain cancer from cell phones than
adults. Cell Phone Safety For Teens: Cell phones are not going anywhere, at least no anytime soon.

Beauty Queens and friendship with Petra
People change a lot of personal things all the time. They dye their hair, diet themselves to near
death. They take steroids to build muscle and look "bigger" and get breast implants and nose jobs to
fix their imperfections. They change spouses, college majors, nationalities and religions. But ask
yourself, why is gender the one unprofane thing we are not supposed to change? Why is this change
so shunned upon in society to the point where it interferes with friendships? This process of
changing genders is called transgender. In the novel Beauty Queens, Libba Bray, discussed over this
semester, one of the main characters in the novel Petra, reviles she is a transgender. This paper will
go on to explore friendships with Petra and her journey of transgender in the novel Beauty Queens.
The novel Beauty Queens by Libba Bray (2011) starts off with a plane crash that strands thirteen
teen beauty contestants on a mysterious island, throughout the novel they struggle to survive, to get
along with one another, to combat the island's other occupants, and to learn their dance numbers in
case they are rescued in time for the competition. Throughout the novel, a special friendship builds
between certain girls, each girl finds a BFF (best friends forever) with whom they are closer with
and share personal things with, than any other contestant in the novel. This paper will particularly,
as mentioned above discuss Petra and her friendship with Tiara

Importance Of Beauty Pageants
Are Beauty Pageants Necessary in Society? Have any of you girls ever been interested in

articles that actual beauty participants wrote so I can see their claim and their point of view but they
are biased. My point of view is that you don't have to put a bunch of makeup, a glitzy dress, and
high heels to be called beautiful. To me it is like exploiting your children and you are promoting
vanity. Instead you can let them do sports and work as a team or even other talents. Lots of people

Should The Minimum Age Be Raised To 18
For many teenagers in the United States their 16th birthday is an important milestone. This is the
age that teenagers begin to integrate more into society as they begin to drive and experience new
levels of freedom. As 16 is the usual minimum age for employment in most industries some teens
even get jobs for personal reason or to benefit their household. The minimum age to acquire a
driver's licence should not increase to 18 as younger teens will not be able to help provide for their
families with current public transportation methods in the United States. According to the Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety the first drivers license dates back to 1899 with a license being issued
for a steam propelled vehicle in Chicago, Illinois. Over the next five years various states began
introducing laws on driving, specifically the minimum age, to ensure public safety. While some
states like Massachusetts and Missouri were quick to enact these laws, others were not. South
Dakota took over 50 years to enact a minimum driving age in the state. As states, one by one, began
drafting these public safety laws, the age required to obtain a license varied from 14–18 years old. ...

decided, consciously or subconsciously, to construct a trajectory of my life that would remove me
from their company; give me an excuse, provide a dignified way out" (Sullivan). His "dignified way
out" included creative writing, and theatre. He also goes into detail of how some of his fellow
classmates would cover up by joining sport teams, attempting to make themselves fit the norm. This
way he gained respect while still being self–consciously different. More examples of this kind of
stereotyped discrimination is thought out in Brent Staples "Black Men and Public Space". He starts
off with a story of the typical discomforting energy he feels when trailing a white

Dr King's March Speech Analysis
Life was difficult for African Americans before the passage of civil rights laws recognizing equal
rights. They were constantly insulted with comments of racism. The photograph of a lunch counter
protest from the article "Miss. honors 50th anniversary of its Woolworth's sit in" in the USA Today
shows three protesters being abused by an angry mob. From the photograph we can conclude racism
was a big thing blacks had to deal with every day. Furthermore, even from protesting peacefully,
they will still get hurt by the racist people that hate them. According to the documentary Mighty
Times: The Children's March, thousands of children and teens lined up to go to jail. In the
documentary, children and teens are sprayed with strong water hoses ... Show more content on

King's speech focused on a message of the equality that every person should have and that no one
should be treated as a lesser person. Dr. King wants to get rid of segregation and hate towards
blacks. He wanted his words to influence all the people that are racist against blacks to make them
believe that blacks should also have the same rights that whites do. Dr. King appealed to his
audience's emotions by using quotes from the bible and important documents such as the
Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Dr. King called his listeners to take action and do
something about the racism.
Dr. King uses many allusions to highlight his message that to show that regardless of race, religion,
and gender, everyone should have the same equal rights. When Dr. King talks about the promissory
note, he reminds us of the "the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". This
allusion from the Declaration of Independence means everyone has the right to live happily and no
one can take it away.
Simile and metaphor also play an important role in emphasizing Dr. King's message that all men
were equal. While discussing voting, Dr. King compares persecution and police brutality to "storms"
and "winds" Through this comparison, African Americans were constantly battered by racism and
police brutality, only because their

Toddlers And Tiaras Research Paper

  • 1. Toddlers And Tiaras Research Paper Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" – Margaret Wolfe Hungerford. This stands to be true in the circumstances of beauty pageants. However, the age old question continues as positive body image and confidence twindle among young teens. Do pageants create unrealistic ideals of young women? And are parents sexualising their daughters by entering them in pageants like seen on TLCs Toddlers And Tiaras? No matter how much research; the debate will continue. Are Pageants Exploiting Young Women? In today's society there is a fine line between too far and far enough. Beauty pageants, like those profiled on TLCs "Toddlers And Tiaras" is a prime example of this. Some parents prefer to keep their daughters looking natural and let them decide when they want to stop competing. While others pressure their daughters into acrylic nails, spray tans, as well as provocative routines and tasteless costumes. During a pageant aired on Toddlers And Tiaras, three year old, Paisley Dickey appeared on stage wearing a costume based off of Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman. Anyone who's seen the movie knows that Julia Roberts character is known for making some "artistic choices". Wendy Dickey, paisley's mom addressed the media saying "Everyone in the room was laughing hysterically, It was meant to be funny, not sexual at all. I made the dress myself! It barely went above the knee, very non–revealing and non–sexy." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... yearly, and nearly 2.5 million competitors in the United States alone. About 72% (1.8 million) of those women hire pageant coaches. Many believe that pageant queens must be incredibly skinny; which is once again, a very false statement. • 2. Us : Oligarchy Or Republic? US: Oligarchy or Republic? In America, we pride ourselves on being a democracy and having choices, when in fact, it is only a political illusion. In the Constitution of the United States (which we are all held accountable to abide by), it states that we are a republic with regard to the people's desire to be a democracy, yet there is much evidence that leans towards America being an oligarchy. While a republic is a country which elects representatives to make government decisions on their behalf, an oligarchy is a system in which a small group of people controls the country. The debate of American being an oligarchy assumes that elites have power in many aspects of government, such as the Electoral College and the election process, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Congress make up the Legislative branch, which is in charge of making bills that potentially turn into laws (Congress and California Legislation lecture). These Congressmen are also a part of the electors in the Electoral College, which has the power to choose the President with a majority vote. While electors are usually inclined to vote in accordance with the people they represent, they can instead vote in opposition if they think that it is a better vote for the people (Soni 2012). In the past election, even though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, Donald Trump won the Presidency with the majority votes from the Electoral College (Krieg 2017). Thus, the many elites in the Legislative branch, have the power to make bills and elect the president regardless of what the people want. Similarly, elites have power in the Executive branch, which is composed of the President and his cabinet. The current President, Donald Trump is an elite for many reasons. He inherited family money (including a $1 million loan from his father to start a business) and his father's real estate company. He also has fame and fortune from developing well–known buildings, such as Trump Place. He is also a successful businessman as he owned Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA for 20 years. He also got paid $213 million for his presence on NBC's television show, "The Apprentice." Furthermore, Forbes states that his net ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Mass Media 's Representation Of Campaign Discourse It is the chaotic month of November, and the fate of America lies in one candidate's hands. With the election coming to its scandalous end, the country has been a tremendous user of television, internet, newspaper, and radio. Presidential nominee, Donald Trump has not hesitated in releasing numerous shocking statements, and the reporters have not resisted their urge of publishing his words. Nevertheless, it is evident that, "By decreasing the effort necessary for journalists to gather information, politicians can garner substantially more media attention for themselves" (Niven). But, as one inspects the features of all mass media closely, a pattern of specific contents and people constantly being under the radar can be noticed. The boundless attention from viewers, reporters and advertisers bring fame, and support to candidates, whether it being for negative or positive purposes. While covering every aspect of candidates, "The mass media's representation of campaign discourse influences whether voters have the opportunity to scrutinize the candidates' issue priorities and policy proposals" (Hayes). High ratings, biased opinions, exaggerated news, and politically incorrect expressions are usually the type of contents drawing the society to itself. Similarly, due to his erratic and unexpected behavior, Trump has gained vast news coverage, risen to fame through social media, and gotten both honored and dishonored simultaneously throughout his candidacy. Every participant there is driven by the same potential outcome of beauty: meticulous hair, white smile, bright eyes, and a thin figure. Everybody strives for that same superficial facade – not the average values for a 5–year–old–girl. William Pinsof, a clinical psychologist and president of the Family Institute at Northwestern University says, "Being a little Barbie doll says your body has to be a certain way and your hair has to be a certain way. In girls particularly, this can unleash a whole complex of destructive self– experiences that can lead to eating disorders and all kinds of body distortions in terms of body image" (Children). Currently, 15% of young women in America have some type of eating disorder (Eating). Some grow up with the idea that the thinner they are, the more attractive they are. This can lead to unfortunate interpretations of their body. In order to fulfill their perception of the ideal figure, they dangerously push boundaries; 50% of girls 8 to 10 years old say they are unhappy with their size, 40% of fourth graders admit to previously being on a diet, and more than 50% of girls 9 to 15 years old have exercised to lose weight (Pulling). Only to reward their behavior, the judges of the pageants asses the contestant's physical appearance based on these superficial themes. The past winners are no role models either. The majority of Miss America winners have been 'undernourished' on the BMI scale, or Body Mass Index, a relation of someones height to their weight. • 5. Voting Age Should Be Lowered The Voting Age Should be Lowered to 16 Lowering the voting age in the United States is a constant, ever growing, immensely debatable issue which will continue to divide the US for years to come. Until change is present, American elections won't have the complete opinion of the population. The main counterargument to this idea is that teens aren't properly informed about this particular topic, however, there are many intelligent teens who are very capable of making educated decisions. Many teenagers hear their parents and families talk about politics and their personal views, creating a greater incentive for these teens to vote. Increasing the voting turnout is the primary reason that I believe the voting age should be lowered. On average, around 57% of the eligible voting population voted in the previous three presidential elections, a major factor in determining the results (Hubby, 2016). Not only can decreasing the voting age increase the turnout of teens, but also for future adult voters. The majority of 18 year olds will miss out on their first voting opportunity because they go off to college, where they are not eligible to vote. According to Marek Steedman, a political science professor and director of American studies at The University of Southern Mississippi, "Many college–age students do not pick up that habit because they live far from where they might be eligible to vote; or because they are in college in a place where they do not normally reside and feel ... By children being able to express their talents in front of a group of people dressed up and have their make–up done in pageants will boost a child's self– esteem because they are able to be themselves. Now a days one cannot be themselves without being judged because it is not the "style", being able to express ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By doing that, the child, teenager, or adult will have experience in speaking in front of people which will help them in the long run. Rita Panahi, writer of article Wise Up, Girls, Stupidity Is Never a Good Look, said, "Let's be frank, beauty pageants are, funnily enough, all about beauty and nothing else" (5). This is so wrong because beauty pageants are not just about beauty, a lot of them are actually about question, talents, and speaking. By people saying that beauty pageants are only about beauty, it puts a bad reputation on beauty pageants. Beauty pageants are not bad at all, they actually help children more than school when it comes to speaking out in front of people. In school, more than likely, they know almost more than half the people they are talking too, but in beauty pageants, they more than likely only know the people they brought with them, so out of the hundreds of people, they probably only know 5 people. By that being said, beauty pageants do help children with their social skills. The last reason as to why child beauty pageants have a positive impact on children is because they can earn scholarship money to the college of their choice. For example, a 15 year–old, Nicola Dalryimple, former winner of Trinidad and Tobago Pageant, received a $5,000 scholarship to a college of her choice ("Trinidad and Tobago" 1–2). • 9. The Good news of Pageantry Unless the skeptics have proper knowledge and understanding, they are unable to understand the criteria for judging a pageant. There are so many reasons to enter a beauty pageant. Although the stereotype is multitudes of girls with big hair, caked on makeup, and fake personalities; being a size 0, or 2 that's not even close to reality! To tell the whole truth about pageants skeptics have to be open minded and erase all of their prior knowledge of what the portray pageants to be. Yes pageants do portray perfection, but that's not the half of it. Honestly girls don't have to be a size two or "pretty" or have their makeup caked on, but they do have to have to love themselves and except who they are, and have plenty self confidence. Self Confidence is the number one out of all of the reasons to enter a beauty pageant. Miss Teen Arizona said " You would never catch me talking in front of large crowds, or being social at all..... until my mom entered me in my first pageant amongst 213 girls! Talk about life changing!" She walked away by being 4th runner up, and as in awe about how much self confidence she had gained over that one weekend! If she can gain that much self confidence over one weekend then just imagine how many young women could be inflicted for the good in just one weekend! Self Confidence is hard for girls to obtain. People bring them down everyday, and it not okay. It's a well known fact that girls are "givers", it's in their natural being to want to give. Some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Feminist Feminism Growing up, fashion and make–up were never part of my life. I have never liked wearing skirts or dresses, I have no idea how to apply make–up, and I do not have any desire to do either. However, as I grew up, I realized that was not the norm of my friends, or "women" in general. When thinking about this paper, I suddenly recalled an episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight, where he discussed the Miss America Pageant. I had heard of the pageant before, but I never knew they were a scholarship foundation until watching his show. The Miss America Pageant has been in existence for nearly one hundred years, yet they still judge women primarily on their physical beauty; making it difficult to believe their true mission is to want to help change the lives of young women across America. Though they state they are an organization for women, they enforce anti–feminist and patriarchal views of women. The Miss America Organization, comprised of the Pageant and the Foundation, boasts that it is the "nation's largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women, awarding millions every year in cash and in–kind scholarships" (missamerica.org/about–us/). However, it is hard to see the connection between academic scholarship and watching women parade around a stage in swimsuits. My sister, Jordan, and I grew up as any typical sisters would. We never saw eye to eye and fought over who borrowed whose shirt. That all changed the summer going into my freshman year of high school and her freshman year of college. Jordan's dream college was Arizona State University and unfortunately we were still living in Colorado at the time. My family was in nowhere of a financial position to be sending her out of state. We were faced with the ultimatum of either moving to Arizona or sacrificing her college dream. The move to Arizona was mutually difficult for us. For the first time we were both in a vulnerable state of mind and it was essential to rely on each other for support. This situation taught me about the importance of sacrifice. I was a tenacious and selfish teenager who needed to learn what it meant to sacrifice for loved ones. That is something Jordan enlightened me on. That first year rapidly changed the dynamic of our sisterhood. She was no longer solely my sister; but, she was my ally, therapist, critic, teacher, and most of all best friend. Each year that I mature, I learn and strive to me more like my sister. She has influenced my identity even more than I would perceive possible. She has taught me to be strong. • 15. Detrimental Effects of Beauty Pageants There is an ongoing debate on the detrimental effects that beauty pageants can have on their contestants. Judged solely on physical beauty, beauty pageants have been around for quite some time. The first pageant, the Miss America pageant, was held in 1921. Miss Universe and Miss USA soon followed, and by the 1960's beauty pageants were part of American culture. Viewed as a positive and potentially rewarding competition, pageants have now recently had a drastic turn of view. Advocates of beauty pageants put forth that beauty contests develop self–esteem and confidence (Ending the Hypersexualization of Girls). However, beauty pageants can be a highly destructive concept that can put too much pressure on its contestants to look perfect, put parents in a financial crisis, and quite frankly, be simply unhealthy. As well as participation in beauty pageants, there is a rage of them on television as well. Television images and broadcasts have had a huge impact on it's participants and the type of messages they internalize about what is "normal". (Could Child Beauty Pageants Be Banned in the USA?). Children, as well as teens, view what they see on television as what they must become. She is a real combination of beauty, grace, intelligence, artistic, and refined..." (Psych Guides, 2017, para. 5). Sabrina Nooruddin, Miss India Georgia 2009, article "Not irony: Beauty pageants make strong women" is based on the ideas of personal unrealistic thoughts and opinions. It is strictly based on only her specific experiences that were beneficial to her. Her claim, that beauty pageants make strong women is misleading in the fact that she is not clear and concise with her main ideas, she lacks ethos, logos, and pathos, and does not cover the actual act of strutting down a run way with glitz and glam. Nooruddin views on beauty pageants would be fulfilling and believable if she used credible outside sources other than herself. This would provide the audience with a since of direction and organization making the article clear, concise, and understandable. In fact, she is vague throughout the entire article. Nooruddin states that there is far more to beauty pageants than physical beauty. Sadly, that is what the reality TV, Toddlers and Tiaras, is displaying for the public eye. This shows that pageants are providing children to negative media and they cannot embrace their childhood properly. If society and TV would stop glamorizing pageants, maybe fewer behavioral problems would occur within girls from elementary to teens. Finally, it describes the American public's knowledge and involvement in politics. American Public's Understanding and Involvement in News The American public has very little understanding and involvement in the news. It is assumed that the people are stupid, ignorant, disregarded, and that they seek unreliable sources of information about important news events (Shenkman 14). The two causes that suggest this is that the public is either uninterested or is not well–informed. Anecdotal example The American public has almost no understanding and involvement in the news. The younger generation, specifically, finds absolutely no interest in the news and believes that it is irrelevant. For example, "when one college teacher required a class to listen to NPR for an hour, one student summed up the general reaction to the experience by calling it 'torture'" (Shenkman 27). • 24. Negative Effects Of Social Media On Teenagers Bailey Ferrer The Negative Effects of Social Media on Teenagers Over the past decade, many social media sites and apps have gained popularity among teenagers in America. Millions of teenagers use Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter on a daily basis, staying glued to their phones so they never miss an update. These sites provide a great way to stay in touch with friends, share photos, and follow celebrities in their daily lives, but they can also have negative effects on users. Social media has had detrimental effects on the lives of today's teenagers by distracting them from school work, negatively impacting their sleeping habits, and causing them emotional distress. The first negative effect of social media on teenagers is that it is a distraction from activities that they should be focusing on. A report by Common Sense Media showed that "teens in the United States spend about nine hours using media for their enjoyment" (Wallace). This is more time than they spend in school or even sleeping. If they spend nine hours each day on social media, it is equal to more than a full–time job. With so much time spent on their phones, how could teenagers have time to focus on studying or any other productive activity in their lives? Part of the problem is that social media is so readily available at all times of the day and night. Social media sites are mostly accessed through a cell phone, which most teenagers have with them all the time. Smartphones allow teenagers to go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Irony Of Banning Books In Schools Once upon a time, in a world not far from here, there are students who are forced to miss their annual train ride to Hogwarts, lock the wardrobe to the magical land of Narnia, and walk through the English countryside themselves instead of upon the back of Black Beauty. Why are these students deprived of those occurrences? They live in America, the land of the free– except when it comes to the books they can read. In fact, many schools across America exercise the practice of banning books. Since 1982, libraries, parents, and schools have attempted to ban 11,300 novels, according to the American Library Association. The essentially innoxious books are challenged for an assortment of reasons, including use of malapropos language, graphic or explicit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Supporters of banning say profanity can negatively influence the actions and thoughts of readers, especially younger readers that may not have heard or read many corrupt words. Huckleberry Finn, a book commonly inveighed for its use of contentious racial language, is commonly challenged for that reason. For USA Today, Martha Moore wrote, "When the younger reader is staring at that word five times on a given page and the instructor is saying, 'Mark Twain didn't mean this and you have to read it with an appreciation of irony,' you're asking a lot of a younger reader". Granted, foul vocabulary is a challenge that academies need to address, but not through barring novels. Besides, if the reader is sufficiently mature for the book, they can still learn from it. For instance, some racial characterizations do not intentionally persecute people, but show the contrasting tensions between them, conforming to the time period. Again, the article "Huck Finn Navigating Choppy Waters Again" revealed, "The word is there for a reason... The word is terrible, it's hurtful, but it's there for a reason" (Moore). The racial epithets used in that book convey the attitude of Missouri in the 1840s when friction between African Americans and white people was rising. Additionally, banning a book due to concerns about the language is not beneficial to pupils because it prevents them from learning from other components of the book. "Often the organizations or schools that ban these books fail to see the book as a whole; they often center on the one page, the one scene or even the one word containing the offensive language or meaning and judge the whole book based on that one aspect," according to an article by Adriana Lopez. • 29. Miss Wayland Teenage Usa My Journey as Miss Wayland Teen USA It all started on a sunny summer day. I was scrolling through Facebook, an ad popped up and it said, "Are you the next Miss Michigan Teen USA?" I clicked on it, just wondering what it was and it said that all you had to do was send in a biography of yourself and a picture. I sent mine in. I told them that I volunteer at a non–profit organization called "Caleb's Closet" in honor of my cousin, and that I would love to be an anti–distracted driving advocate, I also sent in my photo from 8th grade graduation. About 2 days later, I received an email and it said "Welcome to one of the most prestigious pageants in the world! We are rooting for YOU Miss Wayland Teen!" After dinner, we had to do our makeup and hair. Luigi Bruni is a makeup and hair stylist, he, and his team did my hair and makeup upstairs after I had my fake eyelashes on and curled my hair. The waiting process after hair and makeup was where I made a lot of my friends. Aria and Rena kept reassuring me that I'd do great and they are the only thing that kept me from having a mental breakdown before going on stage and for that, I am forever grateful. Soon enough, 7:00 pm came. We were all scurrying to get all of our stuff in order before we went on stage. First we had to introduce ourselves. I had to walk on stage and say, "Riley Hall, Wayland!" in the most enthusiastic way I possibly could. Then, we had to get ready for swimsuit/active wear. We had about 2 minutes to be changed and ready. I had owned that stage. I bounced around in my hot pink Vans and you would've thought that I was actually at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Importance Of Beauty Pageants Are Beauty Pageants Necessary in Society? Have any of you girls ever been interested in participating in a beauty pageant? For those who don't, you probably asked yourself "What is the point of these events?" I chose this topic because I use to watch the show "Toddlers and Tiara's" and I was really intrigued by how much money parents would spend for their children to look like Barbie dolls. Everything I learned about pageants was from this TLC show. This topic is very controversial because they start off young and start to realize that your physical beauty is what matters and often depression is overlooked. I like to read articles that actual beauty participants wrote so I can see their claim and their point of view but they are biased. My point of view is that you don't have to put a bunch of makeup, a glitzy dress, and high heels to be called beautiful. To me it is like exploiting your children and you are promoting vanity. Instead you can let them do sports and work as a team or even other talents. Lots of people would agree with me when I say that everyone is pretty and we don't need these competitions anymore. • 35. Should The Minimum Age Be Raised To 18 For many teenagers in the United States their 16th birthday is an important milestone. This is the age that teenagers begin to integrate more into society as they begin to drive and experience new levels of freedom. As 16 is the usual minimum age for employment in most industries some teens even get jobs for personal reason or to benefit their household. The minimum age to acquire a driver's licence should not increase to 18 as younger teens will not be able to help provide for their families with current public transportation methods in the United States. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the first drivers license dates back to 1899 with a license being issued for a steam propelled vehicle in Chicago, Illinois. Over the next five years various states began introducing laws on driving, specifically the minimum age, to ensure public safety. While some states like Massachusetts and Missouri were quick to enact these laws, others were not. South Dakota took over 50 years to enact a minimum driving age in the state. As states, one by one, began drafting these public safety laws, the age required to obtain a license varied from 14–18 years old. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He paints a detailed portrait of the hardships caused by being homosexual. He explains the struggle of self–concealment, and how doing so is vital for social acceptation. The ability to hide one's true feelings make it easier to be "invisible" as Sullivan puts it. "The experience of growing up profoundly different in emotional and psychological makeup inevitably alters a person's self–perception."(Sullivan)This statement marks one of the many reasons for this concealment. Which they would like to few equal. Sullivan explains, "But as obsession with diversity intensifies, the possibility of real difference alarms and terrifies all the more. They are marginalized as "stereotypes"". This fact demonstrates how homosexuality will be considered different no matter what day in age. Sullivan speaks of a homosexuals' desire to cover–up. His own personal feel of emotional rejection fuels his attempts to do things that gave the perception of what he was not. "So I decided, consciously or subconsciously, to construct a trajectory of my life that would remove me from their company; give me an excuse, provide a dignified way out" (Sullivan). His "dignified way out" included creative writing, and theatre. He also goes into detail of how some of his fellow classmates would cover up by joining sport teams, attempting to make themselves fit the norm.
