Rhetoric And Its Impact On Politics
Rhetoric Is Being Misused In Politics
Philosophers, such as Plato, Gorgias, Aristotle, had always been debating about rhetoric's definition.
However, commonly, they agree that it is a very strong and effective art, in which aiming for
persuasion. Throughout the history, rhetoric has always been in a strong relation with politics.
Politics is a very vague and furious world however, most people approach in order to better
demonstrate a balanced social community thus a balanced country. Despite all the great usefulness
that politics provide, the bad practices and Ideals of it has always led; globally and internationally,
to fierce conflicts. These conflicts are also a result of the strong competitions between politicians
over two main objects: power and money. It is agreed upon by philosophers that rhetoric benefits
human greatly and in different ways, however, it is mostly used in politics as a tool in which serves
one's, Party's, or group's interests. The US 2016 Presidential Campaign, is a strong example in
which shows how some Candidates misuse rhetoric aiming to win the competition and serve their
personal interests. The United Stated of America has a long history with political rhetoric, with
different types and modes. "The transformation of partisan rhetoric in America presidential
campaigns.1952–2012," is an article by: Jesse H Rhodes, an Associate Professor in the Department

Is Politics A Politician?
Retail politics can best be described as gaining support or backing for an individual through direct
personal connection and networking. This type of politics is incredibly important because it creates
a more intimate and special kind of deal that makes that person more willing to support a particular
politician. Not to mention it can help on a personal level by moving up social and trust levels, which
is a huge part of politics. This kind of politics is different than wholesale politics which targets a
large audience rather than an individual person. A congressional cloakroom is a communal meeting
place that can be compared to the kitchen or water jug in a typical office. It serves as an informal
meeting place where politicians can meet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While retail politics is an amazing tool, it does have its limitations. For because the process requires
intimate human connection, it can not really be scaled past a small group of people. Essentially, it
can not really only be implemented locally and not nationally. However those connections made
locally can help on the federal level. Today, retail politics is still very important but not as important
as it was in the 1950's. This is because nowadays the public is swayed by large scale news articles,
debates and television ads which all falls under the category of wholesale politics. Yet retail politics
is still important today for a politician to stay in good standing with his/her staff and potentially
move up the ladder of power.
Chapter 2
The phrase "all politics is local" means that politicians are only successful if they do what is best for
the district or area they serve. Or in other words, they serve the people they are representing. For if a
politician loses touch with his/her people and they no longer feel represented, the politician will not
only lose votes, but most likely be ousted by another. An example from this chapter is when
Congressman Edward J. Patten used a newspaper article displaying his opponents West End Avenue
address. As the book says the race was won right then and there because Eddie Pattern showed his
opponent not truly being a "local" person. Another example from the book is when the powerful Al

The Importance Of Politics In Canada
In ironic fashion, politics is seeing a resurgence in Canada – not the kind that swirls around
professional political parties but the kind which inevitably finds its way in discussions in coffee
shops, among neighbours and employees, even between parents and their high school or university–
aged kids. It's not the rants between partisans that we have grown so used to and rejected, but open
conversations about all those aspects of citizenship that we must live out together.
There was a time not all that long ago when people pined for this true essence of democracy. It's
been some time coming. Politics had become what citizens saw on television, and in social media,
or encountered with indifferent bureaucracies, negative campaigning, and partisans raising their fists
across the aisle at their opponents.
Nevertheless, while we look for the end ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's a narrative that has resonated with Canadians because we see the results in our national
distemper, our decaying infrastructure, our growing inequities, and our almost absolute failure to
deal with a natural environment that is itself in crisis.
Yet now, with the devastating fires in Fort McMurray, we understand once again why politics is
important. Even those who traditionally rail against government intervention are now requesting
assistance from every political level and are demanding that parties refuse to be partisan about it.
Flint, Michigan, has recently endured its own catastrophe with the defilement of its water. While the
Republican candidates for president were campaigning for smaller government, the people of Flint
called on them to visit the area and see exactly what leaner and incompetent government had
created. And then President Obama came to the city, providing an able defense on why citizens
require a politics that is bigger than mere individual pursuits. As reported in Politicususa, Obama

Politics And The Impact Of Politics On Social Media
Salman 1 Amema Salman Prof. Flemming CSC 105 19 Nov. 2017 Impact of Politics on Social
Media Social media has slowly elevated itself and became the main source of news and information
for the masses in American society. Too often people will read tabloid articles and accept them as
facts. This causes a chain reaction in which readers often reiterate what they read and post it on
social media. Social media is a platform in which many users all around the world use to
communicate and share personal experiences. Too often the lines become blurred between personal
and political issues. Once these two issues become joined, it leads to a very impactful discussion
which can divide people or unite them. In America, approximately sixty–nine percent of Americans
use some type form of social media. According to the Pew Research Foundation this group uses
sites such as: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn. (Pew Internet) These social
media platforms are information highways used to spread opinions and facts to families and
coworkers. A large amount of the information spread on these websites tend to be about political
views. As stated by the Pew Research Foundation, "59% say their social media interactions with
those with opposing political views are stressful and frustrating – although 35% find them
interesting and informative." (Pew Research) Although these political interactions are very

Effects Of Reproduction On Politics
Reproduction affects politics through different views and privileges. These different views and
privileges could possibly form a relationship between two people whether they are good or bad.
However, whether there is a agreement or disagreement on the views, it is important to ensure that
there is social justice. In other words, people need to be aware of the freedom of opinion and
expression that others are entitled to as a human.
I think more than not, different views on politics is often based on socioeconomic status and wealth.
This also ties into power, reproduction, and population. In a political view, since people who are
higher in status are likely to vote for a Republican and people who are lower in status are likely to

Organisational Politics
INTRODUCTION:
"Politics is how interests and influence play out in an institution." – Benjamin Franklin
Organisation is a coalition of interest, so exists in the identification and solution of the problem. In
the process of negotiation for consensus, politicking takes place. Therefore, the existence of power
and politics is the inevitable phenomena in every organisation. In order to manage and to be
managed in the organisation efficiently every individual starting from the top to bottom needs to
have knowledge of power and politics in the organisation.
Organizational politics is an inescapable and intrinsic reality. Organizational politics is so intricately
woven with management system that relationships, norms, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, politics is a self–serving behaviour not sanctioned by organisations. When people play
politics it causes disharmony, conflict, stress, anxiety and uncertainty in the organisations.
Understanding of organizations' political systems – key to success
Understanding of organizations' political systems is absolutely essential for leadership to maneuver
the company towards the goals. Internally grown managers will have an advantage of knowledge of
general political conditions prevailing in the company (different coalitions and centers of influence
which can create buy in or create road blocks). Managers from outside must put efforts to learn and
understand the existing organizational politics through keen observation and focused interaction
with different groups of people. Some of the indicators available for leaders to assess political
climate is general job satisfaction levels, responsiveness to innovative ideas, and efficacy of
decision making machinery and speed of implementation of decisions. Understanding is the key for
managers to exploit and smother organizational politics and also to enhance their own managerial
credibility.
Effect of organizational politics
Organizational politics is prevalent in most of the organisation at present. They may grow more due
to lack of values, openness, accommodating nature etc. But organisational politics results in increase

Organizational Power and Politics
Organizational Power and Politics
Some employees believe that politics and power in the workplace is a game that corporate and
management plays. However, games usually have rules to follow, a referee or judge, and an ending
with a winner. Although politics has a winner, this game never ends, the rules are always subject to
change, and there is no referee or spokesperson. Corporate traditions establish much of the biased
game of politics that is played on the organizational level. Unfortunately, politics and power is a
game that most employees in an organization must learn how to play.

Exercising free will is not the same has having power over your boss. As an employee you do not
have the ability to change the ultimatum; complete the assignments given or get fired. The manager
has the power to force cooperation on you or to fire you. Many of us hold old–fashioned
assumptions about power and there are few new role models. The greatest power comes from
collaboration from skillfully going inside our differences and working cooperatively toward
building something better than we had at the start. The key here will be to use those forms of power
that balance your approach, simultaneously create sustainable work relationships and the desired
results, with the least amount of effort (Robin, 2004). Managers these days continue to have human
resource issues because they continue to exercise the power of position. Managers that manage their
staff this way usually do not get the most out of their employees. Employees do not want to feel
inferior towards their boss. They understand they are not exactly equal, since the boss is the boss.
Employees want and need the same respect from their boss, as their boss wants from them.
Politics vs. Power Politics are prevalent in the workplace. The inner workings of how an
organization, such as a franchise, functions on a daily basis have to do with its politics. Unlike

Defense Of Politics
Government structures are imperative to having a manageable state of civilization. However, these
structures face several difficulties and conflicts. The complex human activity of resolving these
conflicts is called politics. According to Bernard Crick, in his book, "In Defense of Politics" he
defends this activity and further defines it as a conflict resolution through the process of
deliberation, compromise, and listening for the common welfare of the whole community. It is a
unified contribution to government that is not solely based on one interest (21). Also, Crick further
defends politics from the practice of technology, nationalism, and democracy. Additionally, although
it is often assumed politics is done in all governments from local to foreign, in the contrary, all
governments don't adhere to this activity defined by Crick. In fact, with our current president,
Donald Trump, based on the actions he has taken so far, he is anti–political.

However, a major aspect of democracy is majority rule. This majority vote can be influenced by
predominate structures that only provide one forced option. Additionally, majority rule can prevent
the deliberation with the minority group. As Crick defines politics, there must be deliberation and
compromise with all parties (21). The minority in result of democracy can lose its voice. Crick
states, "The late Ernest Bevin once told a Trade Union Conference that it was not democratic for a
minority to continue to question the decisions of a majority– and he received equally sincere and
astonishing reply that democracy meant that he could say what he liked, when he liked, how he
liked" (57). Therefore, majority rule in democracy eliminates the process of compromise with both
the majority and minority. A process that is needed in

Popular Music and Politics
Topic: To what extent is popular music an effective medium of political discourse? It is almost
impossible to imagine a life without music. We listen to music for various reasons but most of us
listen to it for one simple reason: entertainment. Rhythm and the melody give us great pleasure.
Even sometimes we think that certain songs describes our lives and us. When we think deeper about
music and its impacts in social life, we realize that music has more functions than entertaining
people. Music has been used as an effective medium in political discourse the sense of increasing
society's awareness and drawing attention to the problems in the world. Some artists are aware the
power of music in social life and they compose songs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also enables the translation of extreme political radicalism into a more accessible, and often more
effective, outlet... (Williams, 2009) Bands such as Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and
Country Joe and The Fish are good examples on this notion. They are still remembered by their
success in transferring their anti–Vietnam war beliefs to their audiences. Bob Dylan is evaluated as
the most successful artist at composing protest songs in history. In contrast with all of these
successful bands, artists and festivals, music accomplished a few things as a medium in political
discourse. The main reason for this sad incident is people are selfish and they basically ignore
problems of the world. As a result of consumerism, people became more apolitical. Majority of
people do not understand or ignore what the lyrics are really about and they listen to it just because
of the sound. Rhythm or melody gives them temporally pleasures and as a result, lyrics fail to
change their ideas or increasing the awareness. Grossberg noted that: ... On the other hand, so much
activity is attempting explicitly articulate rock to political activism; on the other hand, this activity
seems to have little impact on rock formation, its various audiences or its relations to larger
struggles... (Grossberg, 1992) Rhys Williams commented on Grossberg's argument and said that: ...

Polarization Between American Politics And Politics
As with much political science, the concept of polarization can be a bit murky. Inferring from the
term itself, one could say that polarization in American politics refers to a widening of the gap
between what could be called the average left–wing and right–wing politician, voter, or ideology on
a standard political spectrum. Another examination of the term could result in a definition regarding
the lack of cooperation between the two major American political parties. Although, it would be
more accurate to say that both examinations of the term are correct – and that polarization can create
an environment in which the two main modes of thinking are largely incompatible. Proceeding from
a definition, one might speculate how polarization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Understanding polarization is important because it has often been acknowledged as one of the most
problematic process currently undergoing American political institutions. Several scholars,
regardless of their school of thought, have described it as having the potential to cause a self–
destruction of Congress (Farina 1690–691). There are several consequences that are currently
apparent in today's political landscape, including "institutional stalemate and associated political
misbehavior (Farina 1691)." It is important to note that there is empirical evidence that
"congressional polarization has been steadily and consistently increasing since the 1980s (Farina
1701)." In this event, it is understandable why political scholars are so entrenched in discovering the
sources of polarization.
There are several theories that attempt to accurately calculate the causes of polarization, but most of
these theories only find moderate culprits – few of these theories and studies find a catch–all cause
of polarizaton. One study, completed by Jesse Sussell and James A. Thomson, points to population
clustering as a factor in polarization. In their study, they examine the shifts in population and their
contribution to polarization in the U.S. House of Representatives. In other words, this study claims
that the growing disparities between liberal and conservative locations (such as large cities and rural
towns,

Celebrities In American Politics
American politics has been in the public eye for as long as the country has been in existence, but it
became more prominent and democratic in the early 1900s with the advent of mass media devices.
Celebrities and famous faces have found themselves entangled within the mess that is politics as a
result. A major research question that is a rising investigation is how celebrity involvement sways
voters to vote for a certain candidate. The following points satisfy Baglione's five points: interest,
importance, shortness, directness, and doability. Celebrities have become more relevant in recent

After 2004, research studying the effect of celebrity politics increased dramatically. Celebrity
endorsement of a candidate can lead to an increase in voter turnout by the uninformed masses (Veer
2010, Frizzell 2011). Because this portion of the public is not aware of the nitty–gritty of politics,
chances are that they will believe celebrities on almost anything. Celebrity speakers at the
Democratic National Conference in 2004 increased voter turnout due to the media attention they
gained (Payne 2007). A similar thing can be seen with celebrity symbolism. Bill Clinton and his
saxophone, Barack Obama dancing on Ellen, and Barack Obama's mic drop at his final State of the
Union address are memorable symbols of these presidents (Street 2012). To the uninformed masses,
primarily the younger generation with unfiltered access to social media, these events have become
memes and internet trends. For a comprehensive modern example, Obama's passing endorsement of
K–Pop group SHINee, various comedic images released over his two terms, and his "dad humor"
created a buffer to essentially shield some of his more negative politics from a large generation of
young influencers, thus increasing his approval ratings from the new generations and recent social
trends surrounding the 2016

powerful women in the United States' politics that have impacted the government. Women in the
government has always been an uncommon thing to see except for in recent year's history. Women
were never involved in politics as there were always male leaders representing the nation. Men were

Personally, I agree with the definition of politics and the dangers that Crick views in regard to
nationalism, technology, and democracy. There are always limits to achieving anything. Given that
politics can adequately be able to maintain its firmness it can sustain its youthfulness and strong
nature (Crick, 1993). However, the modern environment changes and varies highly and individuals
have so much to accomplish based on their numerous ideas and therefore this pressures the
anticipation of the future. In an equal state, politics can never be an immediate and completely
practical activity as politicians must act in regard to the future. According to Crick, (1993), ''Politics

the President is working of limiting immigration which is among the interest of those that considers

political injustice or justice but its prejudiced authority cannot be denied (Crick, 1993). The
administration of Trump is considered to be based on racism to many but Crick states that
nationalism is dissimilar to race. For instance, Crick states that U.A, Britain, Sweden and Holland
are among the states with patriotic and legal grounds that were developed prior to the rise of racism

This would provide a level playing field because the election rate of incumbent
Congressmen is more than ninety–percent. Why? Then you might ask is the re–election
rate so high. Because the party is much more likely to spend the soft money in places
where they have seats, and know they can retain them. Whereas the committee for the
party which is not in office in a certain district, may be dissuaded by a lesser known
candidate in that district. Feeling that they can not steal the seat from the other party, the

The World Of Politics And Political Theory
Of the various thinkers examined in history, many have contributed to the world of politics and
paved the way for our modern day government. Not only have they built up a forum for how
policymaking is organized and overall studied, they have also illuminated new ways to carry out our
judicial systems. Two of the major component thinkers that attributed to the growth of politics as a
whole were Aristotle and Plato. These two philosophers not only presented new theories but also
changed how legislation is viewed by the world and potential lawmakers.
To bring this topic into being, we must first analyze what politics was and is today in our society
and how our views were constructed on this topic. According to the Meriam–Webster Dictionary, ...

If asked what politics is, most would usually say that it is another way of conning people for their
votes due to well–constructed lies told by decently put together politicians making promises toward
the public that cannot be kept once elected.
Nonetheless, in the latter parts of the reading, it goes on to describe politics as the leadership value
or "leader" of a state. In order to elucidate the term of a leader, the book gave various anecdotes in
order to portray the qualities of a good leader. Webster's dictionary defines leadership as the position
or function of a person who guides or directs a group. With this given definition by Webster, it could
be assumed that politics is associated with leadership, because of the ramifications of the
presidential election and the political parties. In the words of Bernard Montgomery of the British
Field Marshal he also attempts to define the word leader by declaring that "Leadership is the
capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose and the character which inspires
confidence." Essentially, Mr. Montgomery is stating that the words of a leader can influence a group
to assemble around him/her to aid them in achieving their ultimate goal and in due course getting

When political candidates are campaigning these days they are using the media as a way to get votes
to get elected. The influence of mass media, American politics have been quite a spectacle about it,
and the way that politics are run using the media. The idea of mass media mass media is supposed to
make it easier for people to participate in political decisions, understand how everything works in
politics, and hold government officials accountable. But during this generation the media is often
used to manipulate and obscure the true form of political issues. The diversion of attention is one

Racism is taught, it is passed down from generation to generation. Even after we have our first black
president we still face racial biases. As our candidate for presidency Hillary Clinton once said "...
for a well–meaning open–minded, white people, the site of a young black man in a hoodie, still
evokes a twinge of fear," how come? If you're an open–minded person why do you fear a person
wearing a hoodie, especially a black person? As if black man are the only ones whom wear hoodies.
It is because of our skin, whites are often scared of blacks due to the simple fact of what their
ancestors did to the blacks ancestors, and the inequalities they face because the color of their skin.
How does this happen in today's society, is simple to the fact that "Race is primed within the
subconscious and/or unconscious awareness of exposed individuals whose racist attitudes are
sublimated under espoused values of racial equality" (McIlwain) but, nevertheless become apparent
in their processing of racist content such that they make decisions and perform tasks that may either
negatively judge people of color or heighten White racial group

Media And Its Impact On Politics
Media today has become extremely corrupt while spreading news about today's politics. Today 's
new articles on politics are usually either bias, the story is slightly altered, or the information in the
articles are just found to be rumors later on. There aren't many news sources today that are
producing reliable articles that aren't biased one way or another towards politics. I believe that all
sources of media today have had a combined negative impact on politics today because people use
news media it to spread false information and social media is abuse when people use it to attack
others in inappropriate ways. One major way media is affecting politics is by putting out
information that could be seen as biased one way or the other. They do this is by leaning their
articles towards a certain candidate by changing the article to benefit the candidate they prefer.
Another way they do this is by covering articles that will benefit only who they are in favor of
supporting or by covering articles that will hurt the person they choose not to support and this can
lead to misinformed voters in the end because they don't really get the full story. This has always
been a fairly huge problem in media since the beginning of news media's existence but since the
creation of the internet making the availability of information so easily accessible, it has become
much easier for certain news corporations to get out articles and information that has be
manipulated. So I would believe this

Politics And Political Philosophy: The Study Of Politics
The study of politics has evolved throughout the different epochs of history. The study of politics,
by political philosophy, dates back at least fifth century B.C., where Greek philosophers, Plato and
Aristotle, were credited by being called its "founding fathers" (Chiranjeev et al., 2013, p42.).
Political philosophy, as a study of politics, has progressed throughout the history of studying
political phenomena. It brought numerous issues, revolutions, approaches, etc. on how to study
politics. Two of which are the formation of political science and political theory. The connection
between the three, political philosophy, political science, and political theory, is something that can
be related to Hegelian dialectics. By analyzing political philosophy's progress, it would give a better
light on how the former molded the emergence of political science and theory. Political philosophy
transcended through the different epochs with its respecting changes. From the classical works of
the Greek philosophers like Plato, then to the works of Hegel and Marx, until the contemporary
political works, political philosophy adapted to the form of explaining political phenomena of each
epoch. The changes in the progress of political philosophy, however, are not in a random manner. It
follows a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

American Involvement In Politics
Politics affect the lives of every single American, yet the US voter turnout rate is only roughly 55
percent as of 2012 (Peters 1). As a country and population, Americans are constantly chastised for
their low or otherwise inadequate political involvement. One can see, in reference to American
politics, that there are three main ideas toward politics–– and there's clearly a ranking within them.
Americans take one of three stances toward politics: positive, neutral, and negative, in order of how
helpful these views are to our political system. Positive involvement in politics includes,
predominantly and most easily, watching news coverage from unbiased sources or, lacking that,
oppositely biased sources in an attempt to see both sides. However, ... Show more content on

Usually, people who are negatively involved in politics are entrenched in the idea that some other
style of government, usually anarchy or theocracy, far outweighs our current republic. This idea is
fine to have, and if one's reasons for believing in his idea are explained well, even has some merit to
it. The attitude becomes negative involvement, however, when one refuses to seek solutions
available in our political system. He will instead become involved in his own campaigns–– such as
"abolish the national government" for an anarchist, or "replace the president with America's most
well respected priest" for a theocratist–– which will realistically never work, never pass, and will
never even be considered in modern

Essay on Politics and Controversy
Politics and Controversy
Politicians are all noble. There is no corruption in modern politics. The American system of
government is a smooth, efficient machine that runs without flaws.
Now do I have your attention? These are some ideas that politicians would love for us to believe.
However, let's examine the facts, shall we? In our perusal of political corruption and fallacy, we
shall cover three topics. Lies, leeches, and losers. The first category, political lies, will cover the
purposeful misinterpretations of data that the government willingly slings forth to the public in order
to disguise their actions and muddy the truth. The second topic, leeches, deals in the domain of
campaign finance deceit, and how corporations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, they aren't counted because they didn't look for work that month. 409,000 people
looked for jobs over the last year, but not that month, and thus they aren't unemployed either. Five
million heads of families are on the welfare system, yet people on welfare are not considered
unemployed. 4.1 million people are part–time workers who want a full–time job, but can't get one.
2.1 million are temps who work only that month, yet they are considered fully employed as well.
So, where does that lead us? Altogether, this adds up to around 18 percent of Americans without a
job, possibly the worst rate among the Western industrial nations. Lies. Leeches. Where do
politicians get their money? Special interests. They use PACs, or Political–Action Committees, to
channel money to the politicians (Etzioni, 5). There are over 4,016 PACs, each with huge amounts
of money. They can distribute up to $10,000 to politicians that they think can be brought to their
cause (Gross, 14). What's more, individuals can "donate" as much as they want to nonfederal party

happens to, then the rich friend can pay as much as he/she wants for whatever the candidate wants

The True Science in Politics
The True Science in Politics Benjamin Bishin's subconstituency theory of representation is
supported with the empirical evidence that Larry Bartels provides from his book, of which Bartels
evaluates social equality and its relationship with the American government, to Bishin's
observations. Ideas, such as hidden minority rule, activism, visibility's true impact on the average
voter, and ideological and social groups, that Bishin describes are supported by Bartels' findings;
these findings being senators responsiveness to income groups, citizen's knowledge, and voting
actions and more. Bishin's book, Tyranny of the Minority, develops the Subconstituency theory of
representation that counteracts the leading theory of representation, ... Show more content on

applied correctly to it in a similar manner. The EGTTRA included many tax cuts, with the estate tax
being a relatively modest and unimportant one, but public support for the repeal yielded around a
45% opinion of strongly favoring repeal of the estate tax depending on the word games that were
played (Bartels 199). Moreover, those majorities who simply and strongly favored the repeal, which
ranged from 60–70%, mostly were people who were not going to be affected by this political act,
and/or had a political ideology that should be opposed to the repeal (201). Michael J. Graetz and Ian
Shapiro, whom Bartels uses their work for character evidence, came to the conclusion that this was
an issue of morality, and not economic ideology (214). The surprising and confusing part was to see
that even though the public has had this type of thought as a majority since at least 1935, in which a
study by Fortune magazine held a survey about inheritance rights, and of all demographics agreed as

Politics In The Crucible
Politics is an inherent concept directly paralleled throughout Millers 'The Crucible'. There is no one
solidified definition of politics, it is viewed in a multitude of ways; as an activity in which people
make, preserve and amend rule, as power and the distribution of resources, as a cooperative process
and as the art of government. Power, vulnerability, manipulation and the idea of facades are all
explored within 'The Crucible' and work to represent the differing facets of politics. These ideas are
represented and symbolised through the use of characters, objects, dramatic techniques and stage
directions.
Power is essentially the driving force behind politics and within 'The Crucible' it is undeniably the
one thing that consumes individuals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the case of 'The Crucible', Abigail, the young, impressionable 17 year old girl who is viewed as
inherently childlike and innocent; is in fact a tedious manipulator, we see this especially when
Abigail is juxtaposed with Proctor. Proctor being a full grown man who is fundamentally his own
worst enemy due to his self–awareness and good morals. In the case of this, especially in a 17th
century context it would be expected that Proctor, a strong family man with a home and relatively
clean reputation would hold power. However this is not the case, Abigail is aware of Proctors nature
and uses it against him. Miller has characterised Abigail to use language that suggests she knows
that if she 'tarnishes' Proctor's name and exposes him she is essentially in control and has destroyed
his public image – the one thing he stands for. By drawing on Proctors weaknesses and "
[tauntingly}" targeting his flaws she breaks down his "stallion" like traits as he inherently reflects on
his short–comings, contributing to his own downfall. This parallels directly to modern politics and
the way in which authoritative figures target the weaknesses of their opponent in order to draw
attention away from their own

Presidential Election : Politics And Politics
The 2016 presidential election was a polarizing one, in which political sideliners were motivated,
placed into a role unbeknownst to them, and single handily contributed to one of the biggest upsets
in united states election history. The polarization seen throughout the 2016 election was not,
however, a new trend. For years, political scientists and scholars have been researching and
identifying a growing divide between Democrats and Republicans. But still many scholars argue
over whether or not the American public has in fact become more divided and therefore more
polarized on political, social, and economic views.
Many factors can contribute to the political attitudes and behaviors of the American voter including
family, gender, religion, race and ethnicity, and region. These factors affect how Americans
participate, whom they vote for, and what political parties they support. Most recently younger
voters have begun to choose the party that best matches their ideology and issue positions (Fiorina).
Since the end of the Civil War Republicans and Democrats have ruled the American political arena,
with third party candidates like the Green, Independent, and Libertarian parties having little no to
success in elections. The two party political system encourages political polarization by forcing
voters to "choose a side" when voting, instead of voting for the candidates that best represent their
needs and ideals. When voters blindly vote for candidates that are affiliated

Deception And Manipulation In Politics
Political theorists from Aristotle to Machiavelli have long discussed the morality of politics, and the
possibility that politicians may prescribe to a different standard of morals than their constituents. In
the lives of civilians, deception and manipulation are used frequently, but the morality of the
political realm is different than that of the private realm. Politicians work from positions of power
and influence, making the average citizen more vulnerable to their deceit. Goodin discusses how
manipulation is a form of power, "A person exercises power through influence and authority as well
as orders and threats, and this is the region in which manipulation works. On a restricted
understanding of power..., manipulation might be excluded because it is not a means of 'overcoming

An action cannot be considered manipulation unless the person being manipulated is being
unwittingly convinced to go against their original intentions. For example, if a registered and loyal
Republican sees a Republican campaign commercial, it is not manipulating them because they had
already intended to vote for that party's candidate. What of deception though, is it always an
essential part of manipulation? Gutmann and Thompson define manipulation as, "the attempt to
"influence, manage, use, or control persons or procedure's to one's advantage by artful or indirect
means." (Gutmann 159). While the "artful or indirect means" employed by a manipulator are an
important part of the process, there is a distinction to be made. While manipulation involves some
form of deception more often than not, not all manipulatory actions are deceitful actions. Changing
a person's opinion does not necessarily mean leading them to believe falsities. According to Goodin,
"Withholding or distorting information is one way of manipulation, but not the only way" (Goodin

Donald Trump has been the topic in politics lately. Trump has made some controversial comments

In the 1970s and 1980s there was a consensus that the importance of political parties was in decline,
that the shared conservative ideology of the American electorate was reflected in the similar
ideology and policy of the Democratic and Republican party. Now, however, the parties are

The red/ blue map shown in Figure one shows how modern Polarisation has manifested itself over
the last four elections. The dark red and blue show that those states have voted Republican or
democratic respectively all four times. Lighter shades show that party has won all but once, while
purple shows states which have gone to the Republicans and Democrats twice each. On first glance
this seems to back up the polarization theory, as Fiorina and Adams put it;
"when the 2004 election almost reproduced the 2000 map, belief in the polarization narrative peaked
as social conservatives gloated about the purported importance of "values voters" for the re–election
of President Bush, and liberal commentators bitterly accepted that interpretation."(2008, 564, 565)
However when one examines the map in figure 2 which breaks down the 2008 election by county,
rather than state. This map seems to throw an interesting side note onto the red state/ blue state
theory. While there is seldom a completely red or blue dominated state, in terms of area covered on
the map, there is far more covered by republican red. The fact that the democrats won the election
with so much less area covered shows that the blue areas are high in population denstity– cities and
large towns. Rather than Republican south versus Democratic coasts, Figure 2 indicates

Coalitions In American Politics
Coalitions play a major role in American politics because of how greatly they shape the US political
arena. Whether between parties, officials or organizations, these allied relationships are one of the
significant factors that result in the major decision made in the U.S.. After differing parties team up
and become allies, over time, the group will have a tendency towards change. This election year of
2016 has been a noticeable period where new coalitions have been formed and others have broken
down. For their own sake, parties must strive to take lengths necessary to maintain or attain power
in the government and therefore tip the scales in their favor and achieve their goals.

Comparative Politics Essay
"Those who only know one country know no country." – Seymour Martin Lipset.
The scholar Guy Swanson once said, "Thinking without comparison is unthinkable. And, in the
absence of comparison, so is all scientific thought and scientific research." (cited in Ragin, 1992).
As such, comparison is necessary for the development of political science. The 'art of comparing'
can be seen as what experimentation is to most sciences – the principal and most effective way to
test theory. (Peters, 1998) This essay seeks to describe the different aspects of the 'art of comparing'
and also to detail the reasons why the comparative method is a necessary tool in the belt of any
political scientist.
Comparative politics is one of three main subfields in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first strand can be summed up in this Rudyard Kipling quote: "What should they know of
England, that only England know?" The art of comparison is necessary because it allows
exploration, which is the starting point of all political analysis. To find out about others is to find out
about oneself. Comparison allows political scientists to recognise difference, which is essential to
understanding these differences. One good example of this comparative exploration is MacAuley's
1967 'Sandino Affair' (cited in Landman, 2000). This is an account of Sandino's guerrilla attempt to
oust US marines from Nicaragua after a presidential succession crisis, and while it accounts in great
detail the events that happened, it is an example of 'evidence without inference' (Almond 1996, cited
in Landman, 2000) – the author tells the story, but makes no attempt to make sweeping
generalisations about the results of US imperialism.
The second strand is classification. The art of comparing allows political scientists to group cases
into distinct categories with shared, identifiable characteristics, allowing us to identify patterns that
will help to understand interactions both between and within political systems. This classification
goes back to the work of Aristotle in 350 BC, when the famous philosopher grouped regime types

Free Play In Politics
Famous American and political journalists P.J. O'Rourke and Carl Bernstein took the stage at E.J.
Thomas Performing Arts Hall on March 31, 2016 to discuss current U.S. political and economic
issues. Their performance was a part of the John S. Knight Foundation's lecture series hosted at The
University of Akron. Anxious guests talked amongst themselves until the President of The
University of Akron, Scott Scarborough took the stage at approximately 7:42 p.m. to explain the
night's roadmap and introduce the evening's moderator, Dr. John Green. Before talking politics, Dr.
John Green, Director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute and Interim Dean for the College of Arts and
Sciences, introduced the two speakers. Their speeches were well intentioned and felt almost too
rehearsed. When discussing performance, we often don't think about politics or political lectures. In
a way, I suppose we as a society want to believe that these leaders aren't acting or performing.
Unfortunately, in this year's presidential race, as well as the debate I attended, it's all pre–scripted.
With that in mind, I think back to the first discussion post we were asked to write about the many
ways life is scripted. Nachmanovitch writes in Free Play "There are many situations in which we are
inappropriately expected to plan or script the future" (Nachmanovitch, 19). Politics, for example,
utilize various forms of scripting. Political figures running for office pre–write speeches that

Bernie Sanders And Politics
Personally I believe that politics have continued to become more of a play, filled with actors and
scripted lines, instead of actual people dealing with legitimate issues. Instead of focusing on the
various dilemmas happening within our society, politicians often times, appeal to general,
unnecessary topics. The term, 'why fix something when it's not broken' is often used, but what
happens when what is broken, is so demolished that it goes unnoticed? The growth and development
of society has also pushed people into a corner where certain topics are barely touched upon because
we have this instilled fear of offending someone or various people. At a certain point in time, we
have to put aside the feelings of others in order to better the country ... Show more content on

First and foremost, I really enjoy the fact that Sanders does not hide behind his words. He speaks
with a purpose, and uses clear language that will be understood by many in order to get his points
across. Additionally, Sanders is not afraid to talk about the racial injustices that are occurring within
our walls of society. One of his largest campaigns, is to confront the dilemmas within our very own
communities, and how who we choose to interact with, holds an impact on not just us but also our
country. Compared to Clinton, also running for the Democratic Party, Sanders is not a commercially
bought robot. He has sponsors and supporters, but for the most part he has been very independent,
following his own values and ideas. One of the arguments raised against Sanders is that he has
openly stated of being a Socialist. Now, the issue that I have noticed with people's debates is that
they lack the basic knowledge of what Socialism actually is. So instead of actually having an
educated stance, they label Bernie as an extremist, when he is far from it; simply stating that he
wants there to be common ownership. Now whether or not this will benefit the country is an entirely
new argument. Sanders also fights continuously for the working poor and middle class, wanting to
provide the largest portion of America's population a prosperous and hopeful future. Sanders also
greatly believes that people should be freely given the right to make their own choices without laws
restricting them, which is why he remained pro–choice throughout his entire career, wanting to
allow women to make any decision about their life

Machiavelli Nature Of Politics
What is the nature of politics? Various scholars from Aristotle to Machiavelli to Hobbes and Freud
have offered divergent perspectives on this question, but there is no concise, empirically correct
answer, because the nature of politics is ever–changing as new sources of conflict arise. Although
the development of political thought will never be complete, of the perspectives offered so far,
Machiavelli's is most compelling. I believe that in politics, one should seek to leave their mark on
the world by working their contemporary political systems, and my thoughts are best mirrored by
Machiavelli's emphasis on the pursuit of greatness and glory in leadership. Machiavelli constructed
his understanding of the nature of politics with steadfast stances on virtue, conflict, and leadership,
and despite the criticism his stances have brought him, it is these stances that have made him
relevant to political thought for centuries. Virtue lies at the core of ethical thought and it is believed
that ethical thought should inform political thought. According to Aristotle's theory of virtue ethics,
"individuals become good and virtuous... [by] nature, habit, and reason (Politics, VII: ch 13).
However, Aristotle's virtue ethics and development of the ideal state based on virtuous leaders fails
to acknowledge that not all men will choose to be virtuous at all times; Machiavelli (1995) instead
claims that "because you cannot always win if you respect the rules, you must be prepared to break

Politics In Ancient Greece
The question of whether the political or the economy should be the focus of society was first
brought up in Ancient Greece. But what was so special about Ancient Greece during that time that
resulted in this problem arising. In ancient Greece, we saw a subordination of the economy to the
larger needs of the society. In those days, the sovereignty of states was not the main concern of its
citizens but rather the "polis" which was a community of men united by a common way of life, not
by the state's sovereignty. The "polis" in Ancient Greece is widely agreed upon to be the first
instances of citizenship, and the first instance of citizenship by choice rather than citizenship by
birth. This way of life resulted in citizens' having a non–kinship ... Show more content on

below it; he is the 'Tribeless, lawless, hearthless one,' whom Homera denounces–the outcast who is

Plato and Aristotle were in agreement that in order to understand the Greek polis/society, one must
assume that the political state rather than the economic state was the most important aspect of life in
Greece. Continuing off that assumption, it follows that education is the most important factor in
determining the character of the society. In Aristotle's The Politics, he proposes that it is only
education what turns a group of individuals into a society but also that the political is the only thing
that can define a society or state as such.
Aristotle speculated that such an arrangement might ameliorate or even end the conflicts that tore
apart Greek democracies when demagogues won over the people by promising their good only to

Rhetoric And Its Impact On Politics

  • 1. Rhetoric And Its Impact On Politics Rhetoric Is Being Misused In Politics Philosophers, such as Plato, Gorgias, Aristotle, had always been debating about rhetoric's definition. However, commonly, they agree that it is a very strong and effective art, in which aiming for persuasion. Throughout the history, rhetoric has always been in a strong relation with politics. Politics is a very vague and furious world however, most people approach in order to better demonstrate a balanced social community thus a balanced country. Despite all the great usefulness that politics provide, the bad practices and Ideals of it has always led; globally and internationally, to fierce conflicts. These conflicts are also a result of the strong competitions between politicians over two main objects: power and money. It is agreed upon by philosophers that rhetoric benefits human greatly and in different ways, however, it is mostly used in politics as a tool in which serves one's, Party's, or group's interests. The US 2016 Presidential Campaign, is a strong example in which shows how some Candidates misuse rhetoric aiming to win the competition and serve their personal interests. The United Stated of America has a long history with political rhetoric, with different types and modes. "The transformation of partisan rhetoric in America presidential campaigns.1952–2012," is an article by: Jesse H Rhodes, an Associate Professor in the Department of Political ... • 2. Is Politics A Politician? Retail politics can best be described as gaining support or backing for an individual through direct personal connection and networking. This type of politics is incredibly important because it creates a more intimate and special kind of deal that makes that person more willing to support a particular politician. Not to mention it can help on a personal level by moving up social and trust levels, which is a huge part of politics. This kind of politics is different than wholesale politics which targets a large audience rather than an individual person. A congressional cloakroom is a communal meeting place that can be compared to the kitchen or water jug in a typical office. It serves as an informal meeting place where politicians can meet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While retail politics is an amazing tool, it does have its limitations. For because the process requires intimate human connection, it can not really be scaled past a small group of people. Essentially, it can not really only be implemented locally and not nationally. However those connections made locally can help on the federal level. Today, retail politics is still very important but not as important as it was in the 1950's. This is because nowadays the public is swayed by large scale news articles, debates and television ads which all falls under the category of wholesale politics. Yet retail politics is still important today for a politician to stay in good standing with his/her staff and potentially move up the ladder of power. Chapter 2 The phrase "all politics is local" means that politicians are only successful if they do what is best for the district or area they serve. Or in other words, they serve the people they are representing. For if a politician loses touch with his/her people and they no longer feel represented, the politician will not only lose votes, but most likely be ousted by another. An example from this chapter is when Congressman Edward J. Patten used a newspaper article displaying his opponents West End Avenue address. As the book says the race was won right then and there because Eddie Pattern showed his opponent not truly being a "local" person. Another example from the book is when the powerful Al Ullman ... • 3. The Importance Of Politics In Canada In ironic fashion, politics is seeing a resurgence in Canada – not the kind that swirls around professional political parties but the kind which inevitably finds its way in discussions in coffee shops, among neighbours and employees, even between parents and their high school or university– aged kids. It's not the rants between partisans that we have grown so used to and rejected, but open conversations about all those aspects of citizenship that we must live out together. There was a time not all that long ago when people pined for this true essence of democracy. It's been some time coming. Politics had become what citizens saw on television, and in social media, or encountered with indifferent bureaucracies, negative campaigning, and partisans raising their fists across the aisle at their opponents. Nevertheless, while we look for the end ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's a narrative that has resonated with Canadians because we see the results in our national distemper, our decaying infrastructure, our growing inequities, and our almost absolute failure to deal with a natural environment that is itself in crisis. Yet now, with the devastating fires in Fort McMurray, we understand once again why politics is important. Even those who traditionally rail against government intervention are now requesting assistance from every political level and are demanding that parties refuse to be partisan about it. Flint, Michigan, has recently endured its own catastrophe with the defilement of its water. While the Republican candidates for president were campaigning for smaller government, the people of Flint called on them to visit the area and see exactly what leaner and incompetent government had created. And then President Obama came to the city, providing an able defense on why citizens require a politics that is bigger than mere individual pursuits. As reported in Politicususa, Obama ... • 4. Politics And The Impact Of Politics On Social Media Salman 1 Amema Salman Prof. Flemming CSC 105 19 Nov. 2017 Impact of Politics on Social Media Social media has slowly elevated itself and became the main source of news and information for the masses in American society. Too often people will read tabloid articles and accept them as facts. This causes a chain reaction in which readers often reiterate what they read and post it on social media. Social media is a platform in which many users all around the world use to communicate and share personal experiences. Too often the lines become blurred between personal and political issues. Once these two issues become joined, it leads to a very impactful discussion which can divide people or unite them. In America, approximately sixty–nine percent of Americans use some type form of social media. According to the Pew Research Foundation this group uses sites such as: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn. (Pew Internet) These social media platforms are information highways used to spread opinions and facts to families and coworkers. A large amount of the information spread on these websites tend to be about political views. As stated by the Pew Research Foundation, "59% say their social media interactions with those with opposing political views are stressful and frustrating – although 35% find them interesting and informative." • 5. Effects Of Reproduction On Politics Reproduction affects politics through different views and privileges. These different views and privileges could possibly form a relationship between two people whether they are good or bad. However, whether there is a agreement or disagreement on the views, it is important to ensure that there is social justice. In other words, people need to be aware of the freedom of opinion and expression that others are entitled to as a human. I think more than not, different views on politics is often based on socioeconomic status and wealth. This also ties into power, reproduction, and population. Organisational Politics INTRODUCTION: "Politics is how interests and influence play out in an institution." – Benjamin Franklin Organisation is a coalition of interest, so exists in the identification and solution of the problem. In the process of negotiation for consensus, politicking takes place. Therefore, the existence of power and politics is the inevitable phenomena in every organisation. In order to manage and to be managed in the organisation efficiently every individual starting from the top to bottom needs to have knowledge of power and politics in the organisation. When people play politics it causes disharmony, conflict, stress, anxiety and uncertainty in the organisations. Understanding of organizations' political systems – key to success Understanding of organizations' political systems is absolutely essential for leadership to maneuver the company towards the goals. Internally grown managers will have an advantage of knowledge of general political conditions prevailing in the company (different coalitions and centers of influence which can create buy in or create road blocks). Managers from outside must put efforts to learn and understand the existing organizational politics through keen observation and focused interaction with different groups of people. Some of the indicators available for leaders to assess political climate is general job satisfaction levels, responsiveness to innovative ideas, and efficacy of decision making machinery and speed of implementation of decisions. Understanding is the key for managers to exploit and smother organizational politics and also to enhance their own managerial credibility. • 7. Organizational Power and Politics Organizational Power and Politics Some employees believe that politics and power in the workplace is a game that corporate and management plays. However, games usually have rules to follow, a referee or judge, and an ending with a winner. Although politics has a winner, this game never ends, the rules are always subject to change, and there is no referee or spokesperson. Corporate traditions establish much of the biased game of politics that is played on the organizational level. Unfortunately, politics and power is a game that most employees in an organization must learn how to play. Exercising free will is not the same has having power over your boss. As an employee you do not have the ability to change the ultimatum; complete the assignments given or get fired. The manager has the power to force cooperation on you or to fire you. Many of us hold old–fashioned assumptions about power and there are few new role models. The greatest power comes from collaboration from skillfully going inside our differences and working cooperatively toward building something better than we had at the start. The key here will be to use those forms of power that balance your approach, simultaneously create sustainable work relationships and the desired results, with the least amount of effort (Robin, 2004). Managers these days continue to have human resource issues because they continue to exercise the power of position. Managers that manage their staff this way usually do not get the most out of their employees. Employees do not want to feel inferior towards their boss. They understand they are not exactly equal, since the boss is the boss. Employees want and need the same respect from their boss, as their boss wants from them. Your second thought might be about the major hot button issues in the United States today, such as Health Care, Immigration Reform, and Gun Control. • 9. Defense Of Politics Government structures are imperative to having a manageable state of civilization. However, these structures face several difficulties and conflicts. The complex human activity of resolving these conflicts is called politics. According to Bernard Crick, in his book, "In Defense of Politics" he defends this activity and further defines it as a conflict resolution through the process of deliberation, compromise, and listening for the common welfare of the whole community. It is a unified contribution to government that is not solely based on one interest (21). Also, Crick further defends politics from the practice of technology, nationalism, and democracy. Additionally, although it is often assumed politics is done in all governments from local to foreign, in the contrary, all governments don't adhere to this activity defined by Crick. This majority vote can be influenced by predominate structures that only provide one forced option. Additionally, majority rule can prevent the deliberation with the minority group. As Crick defines politics, there must be deliberation and compromise with all parties (21). The minority in result of democracy can lose its voice. Crick states, "The late Ernest Bevin once told a Trade Union Conference that it was not democratic for a minority to continue to question the decisions of a majority– and he received equally sincere and astonishing reply that democracy meant that he could say what he liked, when he liked, how he liked" (57). • 10. Popular Music and Politics Topic: To what extent is popular music an effective medium of political discourse? It is almost impossible to imagine a life without music. We listen to music for various reasons but most of us listen to it for one simple reason: entertainment. Rhythm and the melody give us great pleasure. Even sometimes we think that certain songs describes our lives and us. When we think deeper about music and its impacts in social life, we realize that music has more functions than entertaining people. It also enables the translation of extreme political radicalism into a more accessible, and often more effective, outlet... (Williams, 2009) Bands such as Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and Country Joe and The Fish are good examples on this notion. They are still remembered by their success in transferring their anti–Vietnam war beliefs to their audiences. Bob Dylan is evaluated as the most successful artist at composing protest songs in history. In contrast with all of these successful bands, artists and festivals, music accomplished a few things as a medium in political discourse. The main reason for this sad incident is people are selfish and they basically ignore problems of the world. As a result of consumerism, people became more apolitical. Majority of people do not understand or ignore what the lyrics are really about and they listen to it just because of the sound. Rhythm or melody gives them temporally pleasures and as a result, lyrics fail to change their ideas or increasing the awareness. Grossberg noted that: ... I know that this is a bad way of thinking because what happens in politics direct pertains to me. I've gotten better in the last year due to checking news every day to see what has been happening in the political world. The sources I tend to use the most for viewing political issues and news are ABC News, Fox, CNN, and The Economists. • 13. Polarization Between American Politics And Politics As with much political science, the concept of polarization can be a bit murky. Inferring from the term itself, one could say that polarization in American politics refers to a widening of the gap between what could be called the average left–wing and right–wing politician, voter, or ideology on a standard political spectrum. Another examination of the term could result in a definition regarding the lack of cooperation between the two major American political parties. Although, it would be more accurate to say that both examinations of the term are correct – and that polarization can create an environment in which the two main modes of thinking are largely incompatible. Several scholars, regardless of their school of thought, have described it as having the potential to cause a self– destruction of Congress (Farina 1690–691). There are several consequences that are currently apparent in today's political landscape, including "institutional stalemate and associated political misbehavior (Farina 1691)." It is important to note that there is empirical evidence that "congressional polarization has been steadily and consistently increasing since the 1980s (Farina 1701)." In this event, it is understandable why political scholars are so entrenched in discovering the sources of polarization. There are several theories that attempt to accurately calculate the causes of polarization, but most of these theories only find moderate culprits – few of these theories and studies find a catch–all cause of polarizaton. One study, completed by Jesse Sussell and James A. Thomson, points to population clustering as a factor in polarization. In their study, they examine the shifts in population and their contribution to polarization in the U.S. House of Representatives. After 2004, research studying the effect of celebrity politics increased dramatically. Celebrity endorsement of a candidate can lead to an increase in voter turnout by the uninformed masses (Veer 2010, Frizzell 2011). Because this portion of the public is not aware of the nitty–gritty of politics, chances are that they will believe celebrities on almost anything. Celebrity speakers at the Democratic National Conference in 2004 increased voter turnout due to the media attention they gained (Payne 2007). A similar thing can be seen with celebrity symbolism. Bill Clinton and his saxophone, Barack Obama dancing on Ellen, and Barack Obama's mic drop at his final State of the Union address are memorable symbols of these presidents (Street 2012). To the uninformed masses, primarily the younger generation with unfiltered access to social media, these events have become memes and internet trends. For a comprehensive modern example, Obama's passing endorsement of K–Pop group SHINee, various comedic images released over his two terms, and his "dad humor" created a buffer to essentially shield some of his more negative politics from a large generation of young influencers, thus increasing his approval ratings from the new generations and recent social trends surrounding the 2016 ... Two of the major component thinkers that attributed to the growth of politics as a whole were Aristotle and Plato. One major way media is affecting politics is by putting out information that could be seen as biased one way or the other. For years, political scientists and scholars have been researching and identifying a growing divide between Democrats and Republicans. On first glance this seems to back up the polarization theory, as Fiorina and Adams put it; "when the 2004 election almost reproduced the 2000 map, belief in the polarization narrative peaked as social conservatives gloated about the purported importance of "values voters" for the re–election of President Bush, and liberal commentators bitterly accepted that interpretation."(2008, 564, 565) However when one examines the map in figure 2 which breaks down the 2008 election by county, rather than state. This map seems to throw an interesting side note onto the red state/ blue state theory. While there is seldom a completely red or blue dominated state, in terms of area covered on the map, there is far more covered by republican red. The fact that the democrats won the election with so much less area covered shows that the blue areas are high in population denstity– cities and large towns. Rather than Republican south versus Democratic coasts, Figure 2 indicates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Coalitions In American Politics Coalitions play a major role in American politics because of how greatly they shape the US political arena. Whether between parties, officials or organizations, these allied relationships are one of the significant factors that result in the major decision made in the U.S.. After differing parties team up and become allies, over time, the group will have a tendency towards change. This election year of 2016 has been a noticeable period where new coalitions have been formed and others have broken down. For their own sake, parties must strive to take lengths necessary to maintain or attain power in the government and therefore tip the scales in their favor and achieve their goals. Coalitions are extremely important in American society and often consist of numerous alliances between groups with the purpose of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With two unique candidates consisting of the first woman to come close to being voted into office and a man who possesses an incredible boldness and undaunted perseverance. Looking ahead, past November 8th when a new president is elected, the election could result in a reshaping of the party system. If Trump rises to the presidency, the parties could split into Trump supporters and opposers and cause a continued division within the Republican party. However, if Hillary is elected, there would be some but no major change within the parties and the divisions that have been forming leading up the election may dissipate. Both prior and after the 2016 election, there have been and will continue to be considerable changes in US coalitions. In conclusion, coalitions are necessary to consider because of the significant effect that have on American politics. It is one of the most effective ways for a party to expand their influence, power and the decisions in government they advocate. They shape the US political arena and shift with incoming ... • 36. Comparative Politics Essay "Those who only know one country know no country." – Seymour Martin Lipset. The scholar Guy Swanson once said, "Thinking without comparison is unthinkable. And, in the absence of comparison, so is all scientific thought and scientific research." (cited in Ragin, 1992). As such, comparison is necessary for the development of political science. The 'art of comparing' can be seen as what experimentation is to most sciences – the principal and most effective way to test theory. (Peters, 1998) This essay seeks to describe the different aspects of the 'art of comparing' and also to detail the reasons why the comparative method is a necessary tool in the belt of any political scientist. Comparative politics is one of three main subfields in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first strand can be summed up in this Rudyard Kipling quote: "What should they know of England, that only England know?" The art of comparison is necessary because it allows exploration, which is the starting point of all political analysis. To find out about others is to find out about oneself. Comparison allows political scientists to recognise difference, which is essential to understanding these differences. One good example of this comparative exploration is MacAuley's 1967 'Sandino Affair' (cited in Landman, 2000). This is an account of Sandino's guerrilla attempt to oust US marines from Nicaragua after a presidential succession crisis, and while it accounts in great detail the events that happened, it is an example of 'evidence without inference' (Almond 1996, cited in Landman, 2000) – the author tells the story, but makes no attempt to make sweeping generalisations about the results of US imperialism. The second strand is classification. The art of comparing allows political scientists to group cases into distinct categories with shared, identifiable characteristics, allowing us to identify patterns that will help to understand interactions both between and within political systems. This classification goes back to the work of Aristotle in 350 BC, when the famous philosopher grouped regime types ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Free Play In Politics Famous American and political journalists P.J. O'Rourke and Carl Bernstein took the stage at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall on March 31, 2016 to discuss current U.S. political and economic issues. Their performance was a part of the John S. Knight Foundation's lecture series hosted at The University of Akron. Anxious guests talked amongst themselves until the President of The University of Akron, Scott Scarborough took the stage at approximately 7:42 p.m. to explain the night's roadmap and introduce the evening's moderator, Dr. John Green. Before talking politics, Dr. John Green, Director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute and Interim Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, introduced the two speakers. Their speeches were well intentioned and felt almost too rehearsed. When discussing performance, we often don't think about politics or political lectures. In a way, I suppose we as a society want to believe that these leaders aren't acting or performing. Unfortunately, in this year's presidential race, as well as the debate I attended, it's all pre–scripted. With that in mind, I think back to the first discussion post we were asked to write about the many ways life is scripted. Nachmanovitch writes in Free Play "There are many situations in which we are inappropriately expected to plan or script the future" (Nachmanovitch, 19). Politics, for example, utilize various forms of scripting. Political figures running for office pre–write speeches that attempts to persuade or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Bernie Sanders And Politics Personally I believe that politics have continued to become more of a play, filled with actors and scripted lines, instead of actual people dealing with legitimate issues. Instead of focusing on the various dilemmas happening within our society, politicians often times, appeal to general, unnecessary topics. The term, 'why fix something when it's not broken' is often used, but what happens when what is broken, is so demolished that it goes unnoticed? The growth and development of society has also pushed people into a corner where certain topics are barely touched upon because we have this instilled fear of offending someone or various people. At a certain point in time, we have to put aside the feelings of others in order to better the country ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First and foremost, I really enjoy the fact that Sanders does not hide behind his words. He speaks with a purpose, and uses clear language that will be understood by many in order to get his points across. Additionally, Sanders is not afraid to talk about the racial injustices that are occurring within our walls of society. One of his largest campaigns, is to confront the dilemmas within our very own communities, and how who we choose to interact with, holds an impact on not just us but also our country. Compared to Clinton, also running for the Democratic Party, Sanders is not a commercially bought robot. He has sponsors and supporters, but for the most part he has been very independent, following his own values and ideas. One of the arguments raised against Sanders is that he has openly stated of being a Socialist. Now, the issue that I have noticed with people's debates is that they lack the basic knowledge of what Socialism actually is. So instead of actually having an educated stance, they label Bernie as an extremist, when he is far from it; simply stating that he wants there to be common ownership. Now whether or not this will benefit the country is an entirely new argument. Sanders also fights continuously for the working poor and middle class, wanting to provide the largest portion of America's population a prosperous and hopeful future. Sanders also greatly believes that people should be freely given the right to make their own choices without laws restricting them, which is why he remained pro–choice throughout his entire career, wanting to allow women to make any decision about their life ... • 39. Machiavelli Nature Of Politics What is the nature of politics? Various scholars from Aristotle to Machiavelli to Hobbes and Freud have offered divergent perspectives on this question, but there is no concise, empirically correct answer, because the nature of politics is ever–changing as new sources of conflict arise. Although the development of political thought will never be complete, of the perspectives offered so far, Machiavelli's is most compelling. I believe that in politics, one should seek to leave their mark on the world by working their contemporary political systems, and my thoughts are best mirrored by Machiavelli's emphasis on the pursuit of greatness and glory in leadership. Machiavelli constructed his understanding of the nature of politics with steadfast stances on virtue, conflict, and leadership, and despite the criticism his stances have brought him, it is these stances that have made him relevant to political thought for centuries. Virtue lies at the core of ethical thought and it is believed that ethical thought should inform political thought. According to Aristotle's theory of virtue ethics, "individuals become good and virtuous... [by] nature, habit, and reason (Politics, VII: ch 13). However, Aristotle's virtue ethics and development of the ideal state based on virtuous leaders fails to acknowledge that not all men will choose to be virtuous at all times; Machiavelli (1995) instead claims that "because you cannot always win if you respect the rules, you must be prepared to break ... • 40. Politics In Ancient Greece The question of whether the political or the economy should be the focus of society was first brought up in Ancient Greece. But what was so special about Ancient Greece during that time that resulted in this problem arising. In ancient Greece, we saw a subordination of the economy to the larger needs of the society. In those days, the sovereignty of states was not the main concern of its citizens but rather the "polis" which was a community of men united by a common way of life, not by the state's sovereignty. The "polis" in Ancient Greece is widely agreed upon to be the first instances of citizenship, and the first instance of citizenship by choice rather than citizenship by birth. This way of life resulted in citizens' having a non–kinship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And he who by nature and not by mere accident is without a state, is either above humanity, or below it; he is the 'Tribeless, lawless, hearthless one,' whom Homera denounces–the outcast who is a lover of war; he may be compared to a bird which flies alone. (Politics) Plato and Aristotle were in agreement that in order to understand the Greek polis/society, one must assume that the political state rather than the economic state was the most important aspect of life in Greece. Continuing off that assumption, it follows that education is the most important factor in determining the character of the society. In Aristotle's The Politics, he proposes that it is only education what turns a group of individuals into a society but also that the political is the only thing that can define a society or state as such. Aristotle speculated that such an arrangement might ameliorate or even end the conflicts that tore apart Greek democracies when demagogues won over the people by promising their good only to establish tyrannies that in turn provoked additional violent ...
