Sociocultural Theory And Second Language Learning
Sociocultural Theory and Second Language Learning
"Language is the most pervasive and powerful cultural artefact that humans possess to mediate their connection to the world, to each other, and to
themselves" [Lantolf & Thorne 2006:201]. The idea of mediation inherent in this notion of the language is a fundamental element of Sociocultural
Theory [SCT], one of the most influential approach to learning and mental development since 1990s', drawing on its origin from the work of soviet
psychologist and semiotist Lev Vygotsky and many others.
In this essay, I am going to describe major principles of SCT and its central constructs [particularly Semiotic Mediation, The Zone of Proximal
Development] and I am going to provide some examples of related research that have been framed in these concepts.
1.SEMIOTIC MEDIATION
The concept of semiotic mediation focuses on understanding of the ways in which signs carry, mediate, and constitute sociocultural meaning.
According to Lantolf [2014], this sign–based process arises from interactions that occur in the social relationship culturally organized at both a macro
level [institutional arrangements] and micro level [e.g. conversation]. In this part, I will outline main principles of the Vygotsky's theory of linguistic
mediation [based on the definition of language as a mean of mediation] and Whorf 's theory [based on definition of the language is as a shaper of ideas].
1.1The Linguistics Mediation of Psychological Processes

Japanese cinema has definitely changed over the years. In the 1940s the country entered war, fighting battles in the homeland as well as overseas. One
of these wars were on–screen in the film industry. Once war broke out both the American and Japanese film industry's converted to war production and
saw great success at the pushing box–offices in a time where our economy was not the best. As we look back we can see how cinema was greatly
affected before during and after the war .
The Japanese film industry began in 1899 with the start of silent films, One Movie that was filmed before the war is Oatsurae Jirokichi goshi. It was
filmed in 1931 by a Japanese director by the name of Daisuke ItЕЌ. This film was completely silent and was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This movie however had a solder give a little speech before watching it talking about the true American soldier and how important it is to show our
support. By the late 1942 nearly one–third of the features dealt directly with the war effort.
This next Japanese film came out after the war .Seven Samurai[came out in 1954 by the company Toho and the director Akira Kurosawa The film
takes place in 1587 in Japan. "It follows the story of a village of farmers that hire seven masterless samurai (ronin) to combat bandits who will
return after the harvest to steal their crops."(wiki 1)Many people agree this movie has been one of the greatest films ever made. Soon after the war
in 1949 a film called Malaya came out in America the plot was "Newspaperman John Royer Royer convinces government officials of a plan to
obtain rubber by stealing it out from under the Japanese. Carnahan is let out of prison to help" (IMDB) this color film had full audio and was filmed
by Richard Thorpe the director . Hollywood was more focused on real–world events that bring in money.
Years after the war movie going was an essential ritual for American families. The studios and theater owners worked with the government selling war
bonds, to support troops all over the globe. No mater what country Both Japanese and American film were shaped and strengthened due to world war

Companies seek to profit off the work of the individuals they employ. If you aren't generating more value for the company than they pay you will
likely not be working for that company much longer. They also hate taking risks and dealing with the unknown. Manga, like many forms of art,
throughout the years was commercialized after it was shown to be capable of making money. Like all markets there was a void where companies
viewed the risks to be too high, and eventually an independent group of fans stepped in to fill that demand. This is why Comiket was established.
Comiket, the Japanese abbreviation of Comic Market started small with 32 circles and about 700 people in attendance but today has 35,000 circles
and about 500,000 attendants. It is, "A marketplace where individuals can offer their own self–produced creations to a community that appreciate and
supports such creative personal activities." (1) These creations are known as dЕЌjinshi and dЕЌjin, and can be used to mean to any independently
created and released works not just manga. Since and likely because of the success of Comiket the market for niche manga in Japan has exploded in
popularity, there are an increasingly large number of artists, fans, and companies seeking to publish these works. Although often original, much of the
work is derivative fan art, yet the copyright holders allow and sometimes even encourage these creations. In this paper I will argue that Japan is a better
environment than the U.S.

Urinary Tract Infection ( Uti ) Essay
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a microbial infection of the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. Urinary tract is the most common form of infection.
Resistance to the extended–spectrum cephalosporins can occur in Klebsiella species due to production of the extended–spectrum Гџ–lactamases
(ESBLs) that make hydrolysis of the oxyiminocephalosporins and monobactams. The aim of the present work was intended to be a prospective study
of the plasmid features of Klebsiella isolates, obtained from hospitalized patient. Klebsiella isolates under test were isolated from urine samples which
were collected aseptically from the different departments in the Alexandria Main University Hospital. ESBL– producing isolates of Klebsiella spp.
Causing urinary tract infection were screened for CTX–M О’–lactamases by PCR with primer specific to the conserved region of the coding gene. The
consensus primers were designed to amplify 546 bps of the CTX–M ОІ–lactamase gene and used to test the collected isolates. A PCR was followed by
RFLP to differentiate of the CTX–M subtypes.
INTRODUCTION Pathogenesis of urinary tract infection involves complex interactions between an organism, the environment, and the potential host.
The urinary tract is the most common site of infection. Klebsiella accounts for 6 to 17% of all nosocomial urinary tract infections (UTI. The mortality
rate in such patients is significantly higher than those observed in patients treated with antibiotics to which the

The rapid changes taking place in emerging markets, combined with the fact that existing fixed line networks are often underdeveloped, offer
persuasive reasons to believe that systems will be developed that can facilitate wealth creation and genuinely transform people's lives in the poorest
parts of the region. Ultimately, the evolution of mobile payments systems has the potential to allow global organisations to access a far wider market,
including people in previously hard–to–access locations. The caveat is, of course, that issues of trust, security and affordability also need to be
overcome. This report explores the recent developments in the context of these significant challenges. Mobile payments are necessitating new forms of
interaction between telecoms companies, financial institutions, software and content providers. As in any supply chain, it is important to understand
the processes and security capabilities of other parties in the relationship. It is even more important when potentially sensitive or personal information
is flowing between these parties. Ultimately, the adoption of mobile payments will therefore depend on, and be driven by, consumer confidence. In this
respect, all of the participants within each respective business model needs to share some responsibility for its successful adoption. seung Hwan (sean)

Jiro Horikoshi Essay
[Intro]
Jiro Horikoshi, a young Japanese boy, he wants to become an airplane pilot but cannot become one because of his nearsightedness. Jiro dreams of a
famous airplane engineer, Mr. Caproni, who tells him that designing airplanes is much better. Five years later, he is traveling to college by train to
Tokyo University when suddenly the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 strikes. Here he meets Nahoko as she asks for help because her maid has broken
her leg. Jiro carries Nahoko's maid back to her family and then leaves without giving his name. Fast forward to 1928 and Jiro has graduated from
Tokyo University and is working at Mitsubishi designing planes. He is sent to Germany after his previous plane design fails testing and is asked to
design a plane for a fighter plane competition sponsored by the imperial army. His designs fail again and he disappointedly decides to take a vacation

Jiro's character himself is relatively the same, he said he was quiet and withdrawn but was good at solving problems. He was anti–conflict unless it
could be used constructively through argument. He dreamt of planes he saw in magazines quite often while he was growing up, but never did he
dream of Mr. Caproni. In real life instead of being motivated to design airplanes through Mr. Caproni he found his motivation through a friend of
his brother who had just recently started teaching a college class on Aeronautics while Jiro was a teen. In the film Jiro did not have a brother and
had a sister instead. Nahoko did not actually die of Tuberculosis, she died of old age after raising two children with Jiro. Jiro did not learn about his

Economic Analysis of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away
Anime or animation started in the early 20th century by Japanese filmmakers who experimented with animation techniques. Hayao Miyazaki, a
director, animator, screenwriter, and illustrator of such animated films is the creator of Spirited Away. Spirited Away is a film about Chihiro, a young
girl who upon moving to a new town becomes lost in the spirit world after her father takes a wrong turn on their way to their new house. Hayao
Miyazaki's Spirited away illustrates not only the struggles Chihiro has to overcome in order to save her parents who turn into pigs upon eating the food
of the spirit world, but there are also many instants in which the role of the economy have caused an impact on Chihiro's journey. In particular

This not only shows how little reorganization the proletariat group receives but also that Yubaba does not care for the safety of her employees. Even
so the proletariats at the bathhouse still thrive to achieve their goals such as Lin who states "I've got to get out of this place. Some day I'm getting on
that train" (Suzuki, Miyazaki, 2001). This shows that although the proletariats are disadvantaged in most aspects of life they still manage to dream and
look toward the future.
The informal economy is the underground work done to gain more income, but is hidden from official growth figures, from the public's conscience
and are not reported to the government. A number of characteristics can be linked to this concept two are the higher rate of women in employed in
the informal economy and informal economies have flourished for quite a long period of time. In the movie Spirited Away the informal economy
plays a minor role however it is very distinct. Yubaba employs Haku to do the dirty work or the underground work in which he is to steal many items
worth either money or that have magic value. One particular task she assigns him is to steal Zeneba's golden seal. This example shows how Yubaba
acquires wealth and magic through the informal economy. Another example of the in formal economy is when the workers of the bathhouse

Macbeth Comparative Essay In the play "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare and the movie Throne of Blood by Akira Kurosawa, there are two very
different narratives. Both specify the same conflict of Macbeth killing Duncan and him becoming king and having the same characters. The narratives
do have differences relating to the characters on how the stories both play out. In Shakespeare's play "Macbeth" the setting takes place in Scotland
speaking with their own language. In the movie Throne of Blood the setting is in Japan were of course Japanese is spoken having a difference from
both narratives. There are many minor differences stories as they both play out yet the plot seems to be very similar.... Show more content on

As Shakespeare wrote his plays he always throws in a drama. As for the director of Throne of Blood he put all the drama in the ending. The reason
why he took away the scenes of Macduff's family. Kurosawa's narrative became a dramatic irony until the violent ending. Kurosawa did not want
Washizu to die at the hands of a grieving father and husband. He decided to end it with Washizu's soldiers killing him making the movie have a
dramatic change. As for Shakespeare his play involved of a killer being able to kill the father, Banquo, but not the son, Fleance. Both amazing
narratives, yet written differently to end the story of Macbeth's death. As always not everything can be similar from a story to a movie. A movie
will always be written or directed in any way the director writes the scripts for the actors. Such as plays they are written the way the writers would
want the actors to perform because they would know how the audience will be captivated by the drama. Shakespeare and Kurosawa had different
ways to write both narratives yet both came out in their own unique way. As for the audience they could enjoy either both. The same conflicts
Macbeth had to show in both narratives was the murder of the king. Later to him becoming a king that he started to kill anyone who tried to come at
his way. When he became arrogant he dies in the end

Mambo Girl Comparative Essay
Films such as Shall We Dansu? and Mambo Girl both display East Asian performance of Latin American dance forms

Latin American dance styles such as mambo and cha–cha respectively. However, according to dance scholar Juliet McMains, in this process of
transculturation, "ballroom dancers are "dancing Latin" as a means of affirming their distance from Latin ethnic identity through consciously donning a
mask of Latin–ness"––an exotic otherness (304–305). I impose and further McMains' ideas on the films Shall We Dansu? and Mambo Girl. Through
comparative analysis of the movement profile of their two main characters Sugiyama and Kailing, both vital to the plot and enhance the film's characters
and character development, I compare the characters' first dance scene, then moments where they retreat from dancing altogether and lastly, dance as
celebration. The comparison reveals that while dancing is a form of nonverbal communication, communicating the exoticization of Latin American
dance forms in East Asia, it engages audience's imagination and positions them as co–writers of that story; Dance forces the audience to ... Show more

Most of the early ESBLs were mainly ceftazidimases with little or no hydrolytic activity against cefotaxime. ESBLs often showed variable substrate
preference with some enzymes hydrolyzing one cephalosporin type better than the others. The first enzyme with the capability of cefotaxime
hydrolysis but unable to hydrolyze ceftazidime was reported from an E. coli strain isolated from a dog that was used as a model to study
cephalosporin pharmacokinetics in Japan in 1986. It was initially named as FEC–1 but later found to be similar to CTX–M–3 on subsequent

The analysis revealed that the CTX–M members of same group exhibited ≥94% identity while ≤90% with members of different groups. The

CTX–M–25 cluster: CTX–M–25, –26, –39, –41, –91
The origin of CTX–M type ОІ–lactamases was very different from that of TEM or SHV–type ОІ–lactamases (Bonnet, 2004).These enzymes show only
40% resemblance to two most common ESBLs, TEM and SHV. Each CTX–M cluster has been correlated to the chromosomal bla genes present in
different Kluyvera species, that normally form human intestinal normal flora at low counts. It is also considered as an opportunistic pathogen
occasionally associated with infections of urinary tract and skin in humans [Farmer et al, 1981; Sarriaetal, 2001]. It also exists in the environment as a
free living organism in water, soil, sewage and animal food. Chromosomal bla gene, kluC, present in Kluyvera cryocrescens (kluC) has been considered
the ancestor of the CTX–M–1cluster (Decousser et al., 2001). The enzymes of CTX–M–2 cluster are believed to origin from kluA gene of Kluyvera

Identify the major segments of the U.S. film going audience targeted by producers in the 1950s. What kinds of films were produced for each of these
segments? The first one was the teen audience segment, which proved to have higher spending powers because of their disposable income that they
used mainly on entertainment. Hollywood therefore produced films that fall under this segment such as The Blackboard Jungle (1955) and as Rebel
without a Cause (1955). The second segment was immigrant and working– class audiences that had enough money to buy tickets for the theaters. The
third segment was the films targeting anti–communist groups, whereby Hollywood produced more than 50 movies that were against the communist
societies. The films intoxicated people that hate the communist societies, saying that these people were murderers, didn't have children and also caused
problems when arrested. Films such as, In Vittorio de Sica's featuring the Bicycle Thief, was produced in 1950s.

Film Review : The Bad Sleep Well
Film Review – The Bad Sleep Well
September 6th, 1998, Akira Kurosawa died at the age of 88 due to cause of a stroke in his home in Tokyo. He was classified as one of cinemas truly
important directors. Mr. Kurosawa came across filmmaking after failing as a painter. He was seen as a domineering perfectionist. Kurosawa was
noticed by dozens of directors of many generations. He had a major influence on many of them. This film resembling Hamlet, both feature a hero on a
quest for revenge.
Kurosawa got the idea of this film from his nephew, Mike Y. Inoue. Inoue wanted to become a scriptwriter. Inoue ended up giving up all of his
scripts to his uncle, for his use. Kurosawa gave suggestions to his nephew about the scripts. Inoue spent six months rewriting the scripts for his
uncle. He had them named "Bad Men's Prosperity". After giving the scripts back to his uncle for a final time, Kurosawa and several others reworked
and wrote the scripts even more. Thus making the final versions of these scripts. In doing so, Inoue was not given screen credits in the film "The Bad
Sleep Well". The Bad Sleep Well, shows an importance of an attack on the corrupt corporate culture of this time period. Acknowledging the similarities
in the plot of this film and Hamlet, it is brought to the attention that true parallels don't surface until the middle of the film.
The Bad Sleep Well happens to be the Kurosawa Production Company's first film made. It was released January 22, 1963. Kurosawa decided on

Challenging Lutgendorf's Ideas within his Article through...
Intro: The discourse of film is a questionable field of study in its own respect. To say whether a film is influence or not by another medium is a
problematic area as there are many factors to account for which can influence an artist's project. In Philip Lutgendorf's article, Is There An Indian Way
of Filmmaking? (2006), he attempts to suggest how texts from the Indian cultural heritage could be used for the discourse of both Indian cinema as
well as to the study of cinema itself, which justifies discussion. This essay will attempt to challenge Lutgendorf's ideas within his article through Hayao

Disney, as well as literature from works from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland (1865) and L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900).
Spirited Away contains influences of both Alice in Wonderland as well as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz since both Chihiro, Dorothy, and Alice are lost
in a fantastical world which they know nothing about, and face a female power hungry antagonist who attempts to stop their desire to go back home.
Para. 1: Referring back to the origins of manga and animae, these art forms were created to repress the American influence over Japan through the
revival of traditional Japanese art practices such as woodblock paintings, and jojЕЌ–ga– literally translated to "sentimental", or "lyrical painting",
which was created by Yumeji Takehisa (1884

Character Comparison: Macbeth & Throne of Blood
In the tragic play by Shakespeare, "The Tragedy of Macbeth"Macbeth, and the Japanese film, Throne of Blood, many characters are direct parallels of
each other. There are many similarities and yet, key differences within each of the characters. Macbeth and Washizu share many of the same character
traits, as do their wives, Lady Macbeth and Asaji, respectively. We can also see these similarities betweenBanquo and Miki and the three witches and
the Forest Spirit. Macbeth and Washizu are subject to their ambition and fear as they ascend to kingship, while Lady Macbeth and Asaji are plagued
by their desire for social status and wealth. Banquo and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They both have the will to manipulate and command the actions of their husbands and show tremendous resolve to gain wealth and status.
However, there are some key differences between Lady Macbeth and Asaji. Lady Macbeth's mental health takes longer to decline into almost
complete insanity. We see Lady Macbeth struggling with her position after becoming Queen. She is stressed about keeping the throne secure and is
not as happy as she thought she might be. It takes a while but eventually she cracks and has somewhat of a mental breakdown. Asaji on the other
hand keeps her composure throughout most of the film. She is obviously concerned about succeeding in her endeavors but she was able to keep her
focus unlike Lady Macbeth. It is only very suddenly that she suffers the same fate as Lady Macbeth. Both women are found washing nonexistent
blood from their hands while sleepwalking. One other crucial difference between the two women is their role as women within their respective
societies. Lady Macbeth does not wish to be treated like a woman at all. At one point in the play she even says, "Come, you spirits that tend on mortal
thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe topful of direst cruelty!" (Shakespeare 1.5:40–44) Asaji takes a vastly different path
when it comes to her role as a woman. Her body language within the film shows that she is willing to take on her role as a prominent

Low Carb Vs. Low Fat Diets
Justin Kinkead Mr. Roberts English 101–015 Research Paper 12/9/15 Low Carb vs. Low Fat Diets Imagine that you are significantly overweight.
One day, you decide that it would benefit your health to lose weight, so you decide to limit what you eat in order to do so. You discuss this with a
friend and, he or she, being of similar body composition and weight, decides to set the same goal. Over the next several months, both of you eat
considerably less food than you usually would without regarding nutrient intake. After this time has passed, you find that you have only lost a few
pounds of body weight, while your friend has lost near twenty. You tell yourself that this doesn't make any sense, but you cannot help but wonder
why this happened. Did you eat more? Did you exercise less? Did you eat the wrong foods? Eventually you give up on trying to find an explanation,
so you determine that this happened solely as a result of genetics. Scenarios similar to this actually happen fairly frequently in the modern world.
Some people may live healthily or lose weight by eating in moderation, while others develop chronic conditions and become overweight. This
phenomenon has been studied by scientists for decades, but the results of studies have often conflicted with each other. Despite this, it seems clear that
two major nutrient categories have the largest effect on health and weight: carbohydrates and fats. However, it is still debated which plays a larger role
in the matter. This paper

Men who manspread in a limited space are criticized for invading other's space and their rudeness. If women manspread, do they get the same criticism
as men, or would women get other content of criticism such as gender performance? In the video "Women Try to Manspread for a Week", produced by
BuzzFeed, the three women share their experience of manspreading for a week. On the commentary, the woman with a hat and glasses shares her
memory of her childhood about closing her legs. She has the vivid memories that her mother often reminded her to close her legs. Her mother's
reminder of closing legs suggests the education of the gender performance, since even though I am disciplined to be polite, I as a man have never
been reminded to close my legs from my parents. On the first day of the experiment, the woman with the hat and glasses feels she is like a monster
and wonders how men can manspread without being conscious. Since this experiment is conducted with a will of manspreading and caring other's
spaces, she might be more self–conscious, but if men are not conscious of manspreading as she says, what factors make her more conscious of
manspreading as a woman? One of the factor of being conscious of manspreading might be attributed to the education she had from her mother during
her girlhood because the discipline of "closing legs" conflicts with the behavior of manspreading. On the day three of manspreading, the same woman
tells that she is not enjoying the experiment and feels uncomfortable manspreading because she takes extra spaces in a train. None of the three women
did not get criticism for being masculine during the experiment, yet the "closing legs" discipline suggests that manspreading opposes the gender

The Fifteen–Year War was a time of great turmoil and uncertainty in Japan. Various facets of the country were tested and driven to their limits.
During the occupation, race and gender began to evolve in ways that had not exactly be seen before. War had a tremendous impact on every part of
the life of a Japanese citizen. Both men and women began to fill roles that were completely novel to them. Race became a part of the definition of
who people were. As the war progressed and American troops landed on Japanese soil for occupation, more drastic changes occurred. Economic
hardship and rations befell the people of the Land of the Rising Sun. Prostitution began to rear its ugly head and rape transpired. Through memory,

A prime example of this is Seita and Setsuko's female cousin. There are several mentions during a portion of the film about her status as a worker.
Her mother, Seita and Setsuko's aunt, believes it to be patriotic and work toward the country and war effort. There is nobility in working for the
war, in it as a man of the military or on home soil as a woman. The aunt makes her opinion about this abundantly clear; her critique is hard to ignore.
Her grueling dogging of the main protagonists also is a critique of gender roles. What she says is most often just as important as how she says it.
Her tone is often militant even in nature, again emphasizing the importance of the war. She is a motivator and a drill sergeant. Japanese soil is as
much a war zone as the places of actual war. Her role in the household is scattered with masculine traits. Setsuko's and Seita's hiatus of habitation
under their aunt's roof enabled a sense of independence happiness not seen before for Seita and Setusko. For example, she has Seita sell his mother's
kimono for rice. Control of finances is a facet of the male gender role. Yet she convinced Seita to sell the clothing with ease. In this is evidence that a
woman with a set of masculine role traits is worth more or possesses greater power than a feminized male. In the end however, this double standard
still exhibits a sense of inferiority for the female gender because a woman must change from what

More significantly, the idea that the descendents of Banquo and the son of Miki could take the throne ultimately inflicts fear upon Macbeth and
Washizu. Macbeth and Washizu will not stop until their royal status is completely final and solidified. The supernatural elements of the three witches
and the forest spirit leads the play and movie in its atmosphere of fear and evil. The minor, but significant, characters cause Macbeth and Washizu to
constantly choose evil over good throughout the play and movie. The style used in the depiction of the characters in Macbeth and Throne of Blood

By focussing on Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Washizu, and Asaji, the power struggle is clear. Macbeth's wife, Lady Macbeth, mainly controls their fate.
Similarly, Lady Asaji controls her and her husband Washizu's fate. When it comes to main downfall of each character, the relationships between

Essay on Shakespeare's Macbeth and Kurosawa's Throne of Blood
Throne of Blood, the 1957 filmed translation of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, was made in Japan, written in Japanese by Shinobu Hashimoto,
Ryuzo Kikushima, Akira Kurosowa and Hideo Oguni and directed by Akira Kurosawa. It has many times been called an adaptation of Macbeth,
however it is not. As storytellers have done since time began, Kurosawa took a story and made it his own: translating a play text into another medium;
a separate setting; a differing culture in a completely different style and for a completely contrasting audience.
The film wasn't even intended to be an adaptation of Macbeth. When composing Throne of Blood, the writing team involved did not even consult
Shakespeare's script, as Stuart Galbraith details in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shakespeare wrote Macbeth for James I of England, a Scottish King, who was an ancestor of Banquo. Kurosawa wrote for a contemporary audience
of 1950's Japan, setting his story in a culture that was known to them, as Shakespeare had done. Similar to the kabuki historical drama or jidai–mono,
Throne of Blood bases its story around the warriors and noblemen of the feudal Japan, a worthy equivalent to Shakespeare's Scottish soldiers and
aristocracy of the early middle ages.
In Akira Kurosawa and Intertextual Cinema, James Goodwin says that Kurosawa `demonstrates a preference for eras of disruption in samurai
culture, of massive social upheaval, or of civil war. For Throne of Blood he had in mind the Sengoko period of civil wars (1467–1568) when there
were frequent incidents of gekokujo, the overthrow of a superior by his own retainers.' Kurosawa uses his setting in a similar way to that of
Shakespeare, who uses various examples of imagery concerning the idea of imbalance: of order and disorder. In Act Two, Scene Four of Macbeth he
uses many hints to tell his audience how chaotic things have become for his characters.

The Florida Everglades – A Wetlands Ecosystem
The Everglades, a vast wetlands ecosystem made up of marshes and swamps, begins at Lake Okeechobee, a large lake in the center of Florida, and
ends in the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Bay. It is nearly 50 miles across and 110 miles long (Hinrichsen), and when viewed from the air, appears to be
miles and miles of shallow water flowing through thick mats of grass. This perception has earned it the name "River of Grass". Although it does flow
like a river, the flow is so incredibly slow that, from a distance, it doesn't seem to move at all.
All of the wildlife in the Everglades is totally dependent on the cycling of water. One example of this dependence is the feeding relationship between the

As it thrashes its body from side to side, it creates a small hole filled with water. Plant matter and mud piled up around the edges of the hole create
dry ground on which other plants eventually grow. After many years, grass, trees, and other plants surround these "gator holes" like
fences. Gator holes are important to other species as well. As the water becomes scarce during the dry season, many animals search for food and
remaining pockets of water. The gator holes attract crayfish, frogs, turtles, fish, and other aquatic species, all seeking refuge in the deeper waters of
the gator holes. Muskrats, otters, deer, and raccoons, as well as a wide variety of beautiful birds, such as ibises, egrets, and herons, visit these
sanctuaries to feed on the small animals that can be found there. Because alligators and the watery hollows they make play such an important role in
the Everglades ecosystem, they are considered to be a keystone species since many other species depend upon them for their survival. This has earned
them the nickname "keepers of the glades."
Due to constantly changing water levels, ecosystems like the Everglades can be very unpredictable places. Since the 1800s, people have tried to
control the Everglades to prevent flooding (Blake). Large canals were built to send the water into the ocean and away from the Everglades. The land

First of all, the movie has a deep meaning of the anti–nuclear which is "The time–honored story of Godzilla's genesis begins in the spring of 1954 with
Tanaka Tomoyuki."(p14). In 1954, Japan was attacked by America's nuclear and they were afraid of the nuclear weapon because the Godzilla was
waked by nuclear weapon at that time. Then the Godzilla started to attack Japan for several times and most of them died from the attack. For
example, in the movie that Godzilla waked up in the sea by the nuclear weapon and started to go to the cities hurt Japanese by using fire and
trampling on the buildings. I still remember that one train drove nearby and then the Godzilla just stepped on the train and also throws some parts of
the train away, many people dead from his attack and restless people just ran away and show the faces that they are scared. Especially at the end of
movie, the person said "If we keep on conducting nuclear tests. It's possible that another Godzilla might appear...Somewhere in the world, again."

Introduction
A mass media effect, as defined by W.J. Potter (2011), is "a change in an outcome within a person or social entity that is due to mass media influence

Unit 3: Comparison Essay The Throne of Blood is a Japanese movie that is based on William Shakespeare's famous play Macbeth. Like most movies
based on written works, there are differences in these two works of art. The end goal of the movie is the same as the play, yet the plot line has subtle
differences. These differences can be seen when Asaji, from the Throne of Blood who is also portraying LadyMacbeth, claims to be pregnant and
eventually loses the child during childbirth. Another example would be the ending when Washizu is murdered. The murder of Washizu, who is
supposed to portray Macbeth, is different from Macbeth's death in how they are murdered and who murders them. The battle at the ending of Macbeth

The reason Asaji, from the Throne of Blood, claims to be pregnant is to convince Washizu to kill Miki and his son so the prophecy does not come
true. This is due to Washizu wanting to give Miki's son the throne because he has no heirs, but now that he believes he has an heir he must protect the
unborn child. She wants Washizu to believe that he must protect their future child and the future heir to the throne, even though there is evidence to
show she was not actually pregnant. Within Macbeth, Lady Macbeth does not even have to convince Macbeth to kill Banquo and Fleance with a false
pregnancy. Macbeth at this point takes it upon himself to get murders to kill Banquo and Fleance, without his wife's consent. Evidence of Lady
Macbeth not being involved in the murder of Banquo and Fleance is shown in, "Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck,/ Till thou applaud the

similar formula. Momojiro falls in love with a woman, but ends up having to help her relationship with another man, while the ending always features a
truck race.

Zatoichi (27 films, 1962–2003)
This particular title became globally known to the public through Takeshi Kitano's 2003 movie, "The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi". However, that was
just the tip of the iceberg. Before Kitano's movie, there have been 26 more.
Let us take things from the beginning though. Our hero's first appearance was in a small story by Kan Shimozawa, titled Zatoichi, although the
concept, as a whole, was based on a secondary character of this story, a blind gambler. He could guess what the dice would bring almost every time.
According to the Library of Congress, the story was included in a book titled Futokoro Techo, which was first published in Japan by Chuo Koronsha
in 1961.
The idea to write a Zatoichi movie came from Shintaro Katsu, who came to be the man behind the hero, since he was the leading actor in all of the
initial 26 movies (and director in the last) and also in the TV series. The production company that took on the project was Daiei Studios.
The films were set during the Tokugawa era, where, except for some samurai that were under government service, the rest of the samurai were
forbidden to carry any weapon. It was the reason Zatoichi carries his sword disguised as a cane, a rather popular weapon at that time, named

Sociocultural Theory And Second Language Learning

  • 1. Sociocultural Theory And Second Language Learning Sociocultural Theory and Second Language Learning "Language is the most pervasive and powerful cultural artefact that humans possess to mediate their connection to the world, to each other, and to themselves" [Lantolf & Thorne 2006:201]. The idea of mediation inherent in this notion of the language is a fundamental element of Sociocultural Theory [SCT], one of the most influential approach to learning and mental development since 1990s', drawing on its origin from the work of soviet psychologist and semiotist Lev Vygotsky and many others. In this essay, I am going to describe major principles of SCT and its central constructs [particularly Semiotic Mediation, The Zone of Proximal Development] and I am going to provide some examples of related research that have been framed in these concepts. 1.SEMIOTIC MEDIATION The concept of semiotic mediation focuses on understanding of the ways in which signs carry, mediate, and constitute sociocultural meaning. According to Lantolf [2014], this sign–based process arises from interactions that occur in the social relationship culturally organized at both a macro level [institutional arrangements] and micro level [e.g. conversation]. In this part, I will outline main principles of the Vygotsky's theory of linguistic mediation [based on the definition of language as a mean of mediation] and Whorf 's theory [based on definition of the language is as a shaper of ideas]. 1.1The Linguistics Mediation of Psychological Processes "Language ... • 2. Japanese cinema has definitely changed over the years. In... Japanese cinema has definitely changed over the years. In the 1940s the country entered war, fighting battles in the homeland as well as overseas. One of these wars were on–screen in the film industry. Once war broke out both the American and Japanese film industry's converted to war production and saw great success at the pushing box–offices in a time where our economy was not the best. As we look back we can see how cinema was greatly affected before during and after the war . The Japanese film industry began in 1899 with the start of silent films, One Movie that was filmed before the war is Oatsurae Jirokichi goshi. It was filmed in 1931 by a Japanese director by the name of Daisuke ItЕЌ. This film was completely silent and was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This movie however had a solder give a little speech before watching it talking about the true American soldier and how important it is to show our support. By the late 1942 nearly one–third of the features dealt directly with the war effort. This next Japanese film came out after the war .Seven Samurai[came out in 1954 by the company Toho and the director Akira Kurosawa The film takes place in 1587 in Japan. "It follows the story of a village of farmers that hire seven masterless samurai (ronin) to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops."(wiki 1)Many people agree this movie has been one of the greatest films ever made. Soon after the war in 1949 a film called Malaya came out in America the plot was "Newspaperman John Royer Royer convinces government officials of a plan to obtain rubber by stealing it out from under the Japanese. Carnahan is let out of prison to help" (IMDB) this color film had full audio and was filmed by Richard Thorpe the director . Hollywood was more focused on real–world events that bring in money. Years after the war movie going was an essential ritual for American families. The studios and theater owners worked with the government selling war bonds, to support troops all over the globe. • 3. Japan Is a Better Environment than the US for Inspiring... Companies seek to profit off the work of the individuals they employ. If you aren't generating more value for the company than they pay you will likely not be working for that company much longer. They also hate taking risks and dealing with the unknown. Manga, like many forms of art, throughout the years was commercialized after it was shown to be capable of making money. Like all markets there was a void where companies viewed the risks to be too high, and eventually an independent group of fans stepped in to fill that demand. This is why Comiket was established. Comiket, the Japanese abbreviation of Comic Market started small with 32 circles and about 700 people in attendance but today has 35,000 circles and about 500,000 attendants. It is, "A marketplace where individuals can offer their own self–produced creations to a community that appreciate and supports such creative personal activities." (1) These creations are known as dЕЌjinshi and dЕЌjin, and can be used to mean to any independently created and released works not just manga. Since and likely because of the success of Comiket the market for niche manga in Japan has exploded in popularity, there are an increasingly large number of artists, fans, and companies seeking to publish these works. Although often original, much of the work is derivative fan art, yet the copyright holders allow and sometimes even encourage these creations. In this paper I will argue that Japan is a better environment than the U.S. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Urinary Tract Infection ( Uti ) Essay Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a microbial infection of the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. Urinary tract is the most common form of infection. Resistance to the extended–spectrum cephalosporins can occur in Klebsiella species due to production of the extended–spectrum Гџ–lactamases (ESBLs) that make hydrolysis of the oxyiminocephalosporins and monobactams. The aim of the present work was intended to be a prospective study of the plasmid features of Klebsiella isolates, obtained from hospitalized patient. Klebsiella isolates under test were isolated from urine samples which were collected aseptically from the different departments in the Alexandria Main University Hospital. ESBL– producing isolates of Klebsiella spp. Causing urinary tract infection were screened for CTX–M О’–lactamases by PCR with primer specific to the conserved region of the coding gene. The consensus primers were designed to amplify 546 bps of the CTX–M ОІ–lactamase gene and used to test the collected isolates. A PCR was followed by RFLP to differentiate of the CTX–M subtypes. INTRODUCTION Pathogenesis of urinary tract infection involves complex interactions between an organism, the environment, and the potential host. The urinary tract is the most common site of infection. Klebsiella accounts for 6 to 17% of all nosocomial urinary tract infections (UTI. The rapid changes taking place in emerging markets, combined with the fact that existing fixed line networks are often underdeveloped, offer persuasive reasons to believe that systems will be developed that can facilitate wealth creation and genuinely transform people's lives in the poorest parts of the region. Ultimately, the evolution of mobile payments systems has the potential to allow global organisations to access a far wider market, including people in previously hard–to–access locations. The caveat is, of course, that issues of trust, security and affordability also need to be overcome. This report explores the recent developments in the context of these significant challenges. Mobile payments are necessitating new forms of interaction between telecoms companies, financial institutions, software and content providers. As in any supply chain, it is important to understand the processes and security capabilities of other parties in the relationship. It is even more important when potentially sensitive or personal information is flowing between these parties. Ultimately, the adoption of mobile payments will therefore depend on, and be driven by, consumer confidence. In this respect, all of the participants within each respective business model needs to share some responsibility for its successful adoption. seung Hwan (sean) choi Regional Head Information, Communications & Entertainment KPMG in Korea ... He decided to end it with Washizu's soldiers killing him making the movie have a dramatic change. As for Shakespeare his play involved of a killer being able to kill the father, Banquo, but not the son, Fleance. Both amazing narratives, yet written differently to end the story of Macbeth's death. As always not everything can be similar from a story to a movie. A movie will always be written or directed in any way the director writes the scripts for the actors. I impose and further McMains' ideas on the films Shall We Dansu? and Mambo Girl. To say whether a film is influence or not by another medium is a problematic area as there are many factors to account for which can influence an artist's project. In Philip Lutgendorf's article, Is There An Indian Way of Filmmaking? (2006), he attempts to suggest how texts from the Indian cultural heritage could be used for the discourse of both Indian cinema as well as to the study of cinema itself, which justifies discussion. This essay will attempt to challenge Lutgendorf's ideas within his article through Hayao Miyazaki's film, Spirited Away(2001) through the discussion of manga/animae origin, Japanese mythology, and genre hybridity. Plot Summary: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Manga literally translates to "informal drawings" or "impromptu sketches", and are the Japanese equivalent to comic books. "New Treasure Island featured many western influences such as the use of big eyes, which is noticeable in Walt Disney's work. Ultimately, Tezuka laid the foundations for modern manga. Because of manga's large popularity, it went onto the filmic medium known as animae. Like manga and its early development, animae has had help in its creative development. The large sum of aid in the growth of animae was western influences in cartooning, such as Walt Disney, as well as literature from works from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland (1865) and L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Spirited Away contains influences of both Alice in Wonderland as well as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz since both Chihiro, Dorothy, and Alice are lost in a fantastical world which they know nothing about, and face a female power hungry antagonist who attempts to stop their desire to go back home. Scenarios similar to this actually happen fairly frequently in the modern world. Some people may live healthily or lose weight by eating in moderation, while others develop chronic conditions and become overweight. This phenomenon has been studied by scientists for decades, but the results of studies have often conflicted with each other. Despite this, it seems clear that two major nutrient categories have the largest effect on health and weight: carbohydrates and fats. However, it is still debated which plays a larger role in the matter. This paper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In general, some people will ask about Macbeth's decision and if his destiny will be different if he did not listen the witches. As a result, the reader can infer that the main influence of Macbeth is the prophecy and if he did not choose the way to become a king, he would not kill the king or committed other sins. As the equivalent for this part of the text, in Throne of Blood, the initial calmness is broken when Washizu and Miki is riding their horses through the forest, looking for the web spider's castle, moment in which they found a spirit in the forest that tells them that Washizu will eventually become the Great Lord of the Spider's web Castle, and Miki will become Commander of the First Fortress and his son one day shall rule the Spider's web Castle causing the same effect as the witches in Macbeth (00:11:50 – 00:19:50). Finally, in the movie Final Destination, Alex has a premonition about a huge accident, in which his airplane explodes and as it appears in the minute 00:15:02–00:15:28, all the passengers die including him of course. So, Alex starts realizing that some of the facts that he saw in his premonition are becoming true in the present. In consequent, his main intention is to avoid his premonition; he does not want this dream to become true. He says to everyone that the airplane will explode and everyone is going to die. Then,

According to Oxford Living Dictionaries, manspreading refers to "the practice whereby a man, especially one travelling on public transport, adopts a sitting position with his legs wide apart, in such a way as to encroach on an adjacent seat or seats" (year). Men who manspread in a limited space are criticized for invading other's space and their rudeness. If women manspread, do they get the same criticism as men, or would women get other content of criticism such as gender performance? In the video "Women Try to Manspread for a Week", produced by BuzzFeed, the three women share their experience of manspreading for a week. On the commentary, the woman with a hat and glasses shares her memory of her childhood about closing her legs. She has the vivid memories that her mother often reminded her to close her legs. Her mother's reminder of closing legs suggests the education of the gender performance, since even though I am disciplined to be polite, I as a man have never been reminded to close my legs from my parents. On the first day of the experiment, the woman with the hat and glasses feels she is like a monster and wonders how men can manspread without being conscious. Since this experiment is conducted with a will of manspreading and caring other's spaces, she might be more self–conscious, but if men are not conscious of manspreading as she says, what factors make her more conscious of manspreading as a woman? One of the factor of being conscious of manspreading might be attributed to the education she had from her mother during her girlhood because the discipline of "closing legs" conflicts with the behavior of manspreading. On the day three of manspreading, the same woman tells that she is not enjoying the experiment and feels uncomfortable manspreading because she takes extra spaces in a train. None of the three women did not get criticism for being masculine during the experiment, yet the "closing legs" discipline suggests that manspreading opposes the gender performance of ... Various facets of the country were tested and driven to their limits. During the occupation, race and gender began to evolve in ways that had not exactly be seen before. War had a tremendous impact on every part of the life of a Japanese citizen. Both men and women began to fill roles that were completely novel to them. Race became a part of the definition of who people were. As the war progressed and American troops landed on Japanese soil for occupation, more drastic changes occurred. Her mother, Seita and Setsuko's aunt, believes it to be patriotic and work toward the country and war effort. There is nobility in working for the war, in it as a man of the military or on home soil as a woman. Japanese soil is as much a war zone as the places of actual war. Her role in the household is scattered with masculine traits. Setsuko's and Seita's hiatus of habitation under their aunt's roof enabled a sense of independence happiness not seen before for Seita and Setusko. For example, she has Seita sell his mother's kimono for rice. Control of finances is a facet of the male gender role. Yet she convinced Seita to sell the clothing with ease. In this is evidence that a woman with a set of masculine role traits is worth more or possesses greater power than a feminized male. In the end however, this double standard still exhibits a sense of inferiority for the female gender because a woman must change from what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Shakespeare's Macbeth and Kurosawa's Throne of Blood Throne of Blood, the 1957 filmed translation of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, was made in Japan, written in Japanese by Shinobu Hashimoto, Ryuzo Kikushima, Akira Kurosowa and Hideo Oguni and directed by Akira Kurosawa. It has many times been called an adaptation of Macbeth, however it is not. As storytellers have done since time began, Kurosawa took a story and made it his own: translating a play text into another medium; a separate setting; a differing culture in a completely different style and for a completely contrasting audience. The film wasn't even intended to be an adaptation of Macbeth. When composing Throne of Blood, the writing team involved did not even consult Shakespeare's script, as Stuart Galbraith details in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shakespeare wrote Macbeth for James I of England, a Scottish King, who was an ancestor of Banquo. Kurosawa wrote for a contemporary audience of 1950's Japan, setting his story in a culture that was known to them, as Shakespeare had done. Similar to the kabuki historical drama or jidai–mono, Throne of Blood bases its story around the warriors and noblemen of the feudal Japan, a worthy equivalent to Shakespeare's Scottish soldiers and aristocracy of the early middle ages. In Akira Kurosawa and Intertextual Cinema, James Goodwin says that Kurosawa `demonstrates a preference for eras of disruption in samurai culture, of massive social upheaval, or of civil war. For Throne of Blood he had in mind the Sengoko period of civil wars (1467–1568) when there were frequent incidents of gekokujo, the overthrow of a superior by his own retainers.' Kurosawa uses his setting in a similar way to that of Shakespeare, who uses various examples of imagery concerning the idea of imbalance: of order and disorder. In Act Two, Scene Four of Macbeth he uses many hints to tell his audience how chaotic things have become for his characters. Old Man Threescore and ten I can remember well: Within the volume of which time I have seen Hours dreadful and things strange; but this sore night Hath trifled former knowings. ROSS Ah, good father,

As the water becomes scarce during the dry season, many animals search for food and remaining pockets of water. In my opinion, I have a different opinion which agrees with what William Tsutsui said in his book because the film Godzilla shows the anti–nuclear, anti–war and also tell people that science's both sides for humans which also reflect the influence of nuclear. First of all, the movie has a deep meaning of the anti–nuclear which is "The time–honored story of Godzilla's genesis begins in the spring of 1954 with Tanaka Tomoyuki."(p14). In 1954, Japan was attacked by America's nuclear and they were afraid of the nuclear weapon because the Godzilla was waked by nuclear weapon at that time. Then the Godzilla started to attack Japan for several times and most of them died from the attack. For example, in the movie that Godzilla waked up in the sea by the nuclear weapon and started to go to the cities hurt Japanese by using fire and trampling on the buildings. I still remember that one train drove nearby and then the Godzilla just stepped on the train and also throws some parts of the train away, many people dead from his attack and restless people just ran away and show the faces that they are scared. Especially at the end of movie, the person said "If we keep on conducting nuclear tests. Throne Of Blood: Movie Analysis Rebecca Castruita Mr. Ortiz English 12 February 27, 2017 Unit 3: Comparison Essay The Throne of Blood is a Japanese movie that is based on William Shakespeare's famous play Macbeth. Like most movies based on written works, there are differences in these two works of art. The end goal of the movie is the same as the play, yet the plot line has subtle differences. These differences can be seen when Asaji, from the Throne of Blood who is also portraying LadyMacbeth, claims to be pregnant and eventually loses the child during childbirth. Another example would be the ending when Washizu is murdered. The murder of Washizu, who is supposed to portray Macbeth, is different from Macbeth's death in how they are murdered and who murders them. The battle at the ending of Macbeth is not even included in the movie the Throne of Blood. There is also a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason Asaji, from the Throne of Blood, claims to be pregnant is to convince Washizu to kill Miki and his son so the prophecy does not come true. She wants Washizu to believe that he must protect their future child and the future heir to the throne, even though there is evidence to show she was not actually pregnant. Within Macbeth, Lady Macbeth does not even have to convince Macbeth to kill Banquo and Fleance with a false pregnancy. Macbeth at this point takes it upon himself to get murders to kill Banquo and Fleance, without his wife's consent. Evidence of Lady Macbeth not being involved in the murder of Banquo and Fleance is shown in, "Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck,/ Till thou applaud the deed," (Shakespeare. Act 3. Our hero's first appearance was in a small story by Kan Shimozawa, titled Zatoichi, although the concept, as a whole, was based on a secondary character of this story, a blind gambler.
